Rodent infestation alert! Man I really wanted to like this place but read on. We stored our belongings here while we were between houses and traveling. All the usual stuff - furniture, clothes, workout equipment, etc. When we got back after 8 months to start moving out, there was a severe rat problem. Piles of poop and pee everywhere. A bunch of our stuff was damaged or destroyed. Furniture chewed up, wedding memorabilia destroyed, our baby bassinet full of poop and pee. They got in boxes of clean coffee mugs, ate the packing paper, and peed all over them. Not what I expected for $500 a month! Before you ask - no, there was no food or otherwise that would have attracted animals. They chewed through fabric and paper so apparently they eat anything. I went to the office and talked to the manager. He said there's nothing they could other than spraying some repellant. Mind you we weren't going to fully empty the unit for months. What am I going to do? Hire a moving company and find another spot? I told the manager that I've used other storage companies and never had a problem like this. He actually said: "all storage facilities have rodent issues". WTF! I emailed the company and the owner 3 times to give them an opportunity to make it right. They never responded. I love to come here for the art shows. And each time I think I'm going to spend a wee little bit of time and spend hours. There is some interesting art installation, an experimental movie playing, or something. It's nice to see the community of artists who come through and support each other, and all of this in the great city of Richmond (no sarcasm implied). It's hidden and tucked away, but it's worth the effort to seek them out. In December, they are having a crafts and art sale and I can't wait to go! Last year, I left with some real gems and this year? Who knows, but I bet it'll be good. read more

Nice facility for projects and storage. They have wood shop and metal shop memberships as well as many storage units in a gated complex.

I love this place. I look for excuses to visit my storage space. Super friend staff and always something interesting going on.

Hidden gem of Richmond. I went here to see a resonance show and was blown away. So great that this space is supporting local musicians and artists, especially crackdowns on artist coops since Ghostship. For a very reasonable admission, $10 I attended a show and was permitted viewing of the museum(s). On display are local artist creations. Seeing recycled items be transformed into musical instruments was really fascinating. The whole vibe here is super welcoming and lively. Staff are friendly, the corridors are filled with plants and art installations. Sort of reminds me of Oakland's Fairyland but for adults. read more

Major rodent problems that are not dealt with. If you are in a roll up expect massive amounts of dust and dirt to blow in. Neighborhood is sketchy... Like "belongs in season 1 of The Wire" sketchy. Like "those guys standing around at the end of the block are waiting to either sell you drugs or shoot you" sketchy. That said, the storage space itself is very nice. It's well maintained. Security seems very reasonable. You are 200 yards away from people who kill people for fun and sell illegal drugs for money, but that 200 yards is pretty darn meaningful. Because it doesn't feel unsafe once you are inside the gate. But if you have ANYONE in your life that will need to come to your storage unit (spouse, parent, neighbor, etc) that might freak out when surrounded by drug dealers, yeah, you may want to think twice about renting here. read more

I agree with everything the previous poster said. This place is awesome. I had bad experience trying to book at another place in berkeley in which everything that could go wrong did. I called Bridge Self Storage and a super nice woman answered the phone right away (I called 5 places that never answered the phone) and she patiently answered all of my questions that I learned to ask from my bad experience at the other place. The staff are professional, friendly and warm. The facility is high security, so you feel safe there even though it's in a rough neighborhood. The access to the units is easy and one story. One of the managers even poured me a glass of wine on my last load of the day! Not that that is standard...he just happened to be having one when I showed up at closing and offered me some. I recommend this place to everyone who likes dealing with cool, family owned businesses and needs storage. It's worth the 15 minute drive from downtown berkeley. We're customers on the storage side --- this place really does cover both storage and art-space. They'd just taken down an exhibit in the main office, we could hear a few power tools, and the central garden certainly brightened the experience. Bridge was advertising some get-togethers, and were emphatic that storage customers are invited. As to the storage --- rates & facilities are nicer than other places I've used. There are stairs up to our indoor 5x15, but they're shallow, wide, with a good landing halfway up. There are a lot of cats wandering around --- and they act like they own the place. read more

I LOVE this place. They are locally owned, personable, down-to-earth, and so easy to do business with. And they are more than just a storage company: they rent art space, hold exhibitions for the artists in residence, and host periodic garage sales where storage tenants can try to sell off extra stuff. I left my belongings with them for two and a half years while I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer, and I love that the same people were working there when I returned. It worked well for long-term storage because they had a deal in which I could get 12 months for the price of 11 if I paid in advance. And once I switched to month-to-month, it was super-easy to pay online. I was a little concerned when I first looked at the unit, because the facility didn't seem as spiffy and climate-controlled as some other places, but my stuff was in great shape when I returned. Let me save you some time and energy in your hunt for a storage space...Nothing beats clean, secure storage with professional, personable customer service at Bridge. I've stored with them for over 2 years now, and have been with them through four different moves (Oakland to Berkeley, to Hayward, to El Cerrito, now back in Oakland.) The difference starts with your phone call to Bridge. Someone answers the phone promptly, identifies him- or herself, doesn't put you on hold, doesn't shout over music or asides from other people, and speaks clearly. Why, here's a storage place which is run like an actual business! When you arrive at the facility you enter a neatly kept office which seems to have been recently decorated. Somebody friendly and professional-- in my case, James-- will guide you through the myriad papers you must sign, and to your storage place. On the way you might pass the nice little oasis of landscaping, certainly a unique feature to Bridge as far as I know. Your storage place is, well, a storage place. In goes your stuff, out stay the rain, mold, and rodents. Somebody's paying attention to keeping it safe while you can't. Meanwhile, you're dealing with 21st-century businesspeople, the kind who understand the importance of practices such as billing by email and using solar panels to provide some of the facility's electricity. This is a great place for any beginning artist or so. The artist community use s wide range of medium. The people are very friendly and supportive. The grounds have beautifully decorated gardens. Their is a couple of lounge areas, one with a kitchen and free wi-fi. I often leave at night on foot, and I feel the area is fairly safe. Only on occasion I encounter a small group of neighborhood dogs not fenced in (during the day), that like to act tough. Their are staff in the office 7 days a week. The place is well kept. Parking is on or off the premises. I'm glad I found this place. I feel right at home. read more

This place was so friendly and easy to work with that I was sad that I only needed the space for a few months. The owners and employees are very friendly and helpful and got me taken care of immediately. They helped me find the right size unit for my things, and it was clean, well-lit, and completely convenient. Everything in my unit was completely untouched by dust, dirt, rats, or any of the other horror stories you hear about at other storage places. Though its in a dodgy neighborhood, the facility has great security with the gate, many locks, and cameras. The fact that it is also an ArtSpace is wonderful because they have a community as well. On one occasion when I visited they had a garage sale, and on another occasion some other sort of party where I was offered hotdogs and drinks. I felt very welcome and sad to move my things out. The office is beautifully decorated too. Though it wasn't the cheapest place when I initially looked at it, nor the closest to Berkeley, it was absolutely worth it. There wasn't a single hidden fee and they did some very kind things like prorating my last month's rent when I went a few days late and throwing in a mattress cover when I first signed out the unit. I had a lot of gear I needed to store while I was working in the bay area for a month but the lady at the desk was so nice I decided to keep all my spare junk in here. You have to drive off the main street and under the freeway for a block but don't let that turn you off (it is Richmond after all) 'cuz the place is clean and totally secure. I have had my art studio here for almost a year. I initially did not think that storage and art would go well together, but it does. The spaces are clean but not clean enough that you feel you can't work. The thing I like most about the Bridge ArtSpace is the staff. They are are not all artist, but they try to accommodate every request immediately. They allow customization of each space so all artists can be comfortable. The attitude they try to foster is highly conducive to the making of art. They throw excellent art & music shows, parties. They are participating in Richmond's art scene. The storage side has swap meets, and that is an excellent time for open studios, too. read more

I started with Bridge Self Storage almost 10 years ago when I moved from a 2400 sq. ft. house into a 1200sq ft. house and needed to store half my stuff. I lived in Marin and it actually was easier and cheaper for me to pop over the Richmond San Rafael bridge than to find a place in Marin. When I recently downgraded even more into a smaller space, I had use of their truck to help me move. I have lived in Richmond for more than 30 years and waited all that time for someone to find us and create Bridge ARTSpace. Now it has come to pass, and I feel like I must have died and gone to art school on a full scholarship. This place, formerly an unremarkable collection of sheet-metal storage spaces, is quickly transforming into an actual community center for the arts. I have attended several art shows there, a couple of poetry readings, an evening of standup comedy, and an exclusive West Coast screening of the recently assembled Orson Welles experimental mockumentary, "The Other Side of the Wind" (appropriately named, btw). Bridge ARTSpace hosts sewing classes, craft afternoons, song-writing sessions, neighborhood meetings, and my ukulele group, Richmond Ukulele Mayhem. They have a film studio, a sound studio, a sewing lab, a woodshop, a metal shop, coworking space for artists, and lovely gardens. On second Sundays, a food truck pulls in. Betty Reid Soskin, the oldest active-duty U.S. National Park ranger (age 97) and probably the number-one draw for the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond CA, recently spoke at Bridge ARTSpace. Most unique storage place I have ever been too... The downside is you have to drive (briefly) through a nasty neighborhood, I have seriously witnessed drug deals goin down as I pass by. Upside- facility is totally secure, lovely garden area when you pull in- and they're dog friendly. I can let my pooch run around while I go through my hoards of stuff. I found this place and I could not believe how lucky I was!! I told them what I needed from the space and they wired it for my multiple tools that require a 220v plug, and I didn't have to pay extra. This is a space with many different kinds of artists, from pottery, music, wood turners, etc... If you want to take a class on some sort of art, there are some available. There is a hardware store about a block away if you need to pick up anything on the way there. If you just need to store something, they have climate controlled storage units available too!! read more

Firstly the facility was perfect for my purpose: I was looking for temporary storage for my boat while I went through the process of selling it. The easy access and under cover of the freeway bridge was just what I needed. Secondly the service and management was so easy to work with: The staff were courteous and helpful. Always remembered and acknowledged us when we called by. Introduced us to other tenants, organized barbeques and even helped me with some heavy lifting with their fork lift truck. I happily sold my boat after 1 year but sad to leave such a great community. read more
