Having opened just last week as one of the Bay Area's premier green office and event spaces, the Brower Center aims to inspire social action by providing an incubation ground for the collaboration of progressive organizations and citizens. Currently it houses half a dozen non-profits from those supporting local agriculture (CAFF) to community builders and environmentalists. The 180-seat theater, galleries and restaurant provide the pollen for the curious, active swarms to engage and mobilize. The execution is gorgeous: the building uses no artificial light during the day and collects vast amounts of energy from the rooftop solar panels. Rain is also channeled to water the patio gardens and toilets. It feels expansive and open but is a bit lacking in warmth. However, the Salgado photography exhibit on the ground floor is not to be missed; heart wrenching and thought provoking, they hit the (reclaimed) nail on the head with this one. I'm hoping to see some interesting community programs for youths. The key here is in utilization. We'll see what comes...

Since that is not the case, I had resigned myself to frequent visits to their website UNTIL I found out that they host beginner and int/ adv workshops! Woohoo! Maybe I will be an amazingly talented beginner and they will beg me to travel the world with them and dance on the Petronas Towers, Chartres Cathedral, maybe even at Petra or the Coliseum. Please. Please. Pick me. I'll do anything. ________________________ Update: Since I have now completed both the beginner and int/adv workshops offered by Project Bandaloop, I feel this review needs an update. The workshop is a lot of fun, although pretty hard on the body. I figured that vertical dancing might have its challenges, but I had no idea how much a rock climbing harness and nerve endings could disagree. However, that did not stop me from going 4 days in a row...doubling up on pants and shirts can make a huge difference. The beginner workshop (5 hours over 2 days, $110) features a warm up, and then a rotation through the climbing wall featuring bouldering/dance, dance from single point suspension ("pods"), the trampoline walls, and the wood wall. The advanced workshop (6 hours over 2 days, $150) has an additional floor station and focuses on play and choreography more than orientation and skills. The workshops were between 15-20 people with 5-7 instructors. The instructors were great! Definitely gave the freedom to play, while also providing constructive pointers and maintaining a safe environment. The founder of Bandaloop, Amelia, was also in and out, watching the advanced performances, answering questions, etc. While she did not offer me a position in her dance troupe, I am definitely addicted, and will be going back for more. Maybe one day I can have my own trampoline wall. The one downer: the warehouse in Oakland seems pretty sketch upon first approach,. It isn't well marked, and looks kind of run down. It also can be tough getting in earlier, etc because all the doors are locked. However, the next workshop is in a new location close by in Oakland, so this may change soon.

There is some interesting art installation, an experimental movie playing, or something. It's nice to see the community of artists who come through and support each other, and all of this in the great city of Richmond (no sarcasm implied). It's hidden and tucked away, but it's worth the effort to seek them out. In December, they are having a crafts and art sale and I can't wait to go! Last year, I left with some real gems and this year? Who knows, but I bet it'll be good.

Rodent infestation alert!…read more Man I really wanted to like this place but read on. We stored our belongings here while we were between houses and traveling. All the usual stuff - furniture, clothes, workout equipment, etc. When we got back after 8 months to start moving out, there was a severe rat problem. Piles of poop and pee everywhere. A bunch of our stuff was damaged or destroyed. Furniture chewed up, wedding memorabilia destroyed, our baby bassinet full of poop and pee. They got in boxes of clean coffee mugs, ate the packing paper, and peed all over them. Not what I expected for $500 a month! Before you ask - no, there was no food or otherwise that would have attracted animals. They chewed through fabric and paper so apparently they eat anything. I went to the office and talked to the manager. He said there's nothing they could other than spraying some repellant. Mind you we weren't going to fully empty the unit for months. What am I going to do? Hire a moving company and find another spot? I told the manager that I've used other storage companies and never had a problem like this. He actually said: "all storage facilities have rodent issues". WTF! I emailed the company and the owner 3 times to give them an opportunity to make it right. They never responded. Don't take the chance. Find another place! (For clarity we stored feb 2024 to mar 2025)

The rest of the Workstation looks pretty awesome - the outdoor garden, offices, etc. are all nicely designed and well kept. The office manager was friendly and efficient and helped us settle in quickly. And it's full of thoughtful details -- right down to the phone booths, one of which doubles as a pumping room! During the middle of games, we were interrupted by the neighbor playing loud unearthly music blasting through a speaker specifically placed in their window towards our party. When asked by the owner to come to a reconciliation she refused and threatened to call patrol. Our party was still fun, but very distracted. The vibes were off, the owner tried to improvise by letting us bring music outside with a minimum volume limit but it didn't help much.

There are the standard floating and dedicated desks, conference & telephone rooms, but then there is also a yoga room and a meditation room. These are sometimes also used for group meetings or phone calls. I like to do laps in the yoga room while taking phone calls to get more walking in during the day. There are weekly yoga classes, posture, and mindfulness and I've even been to a community pizza party which was super tasty. There's also coffee, tea, fresh fruit and sometimes specialty water/tea/juice served in the coffee/copier/mail room. The only downside is that the hours are 6AM - 9PM so if you're looking for a place with 24/7 access, this isn't the spot for you.

The vibe and sense of community and culture at this space is one that is like no other office spaces Regus had in the East Bay or SF, forget stuffy and uptight and think relaxed and free flowing vibes! Despite their being unable to provide their end of the bargain, I continued to pay until Sept. 21, 2020, when I notified them that I wanted to cancel the membership. Nearly a month later on Oct 13, 2020, Regus wrote back and said "We are sad to see you leave; this is to confirm that your agreement ends October 31, 2021." When I read this misleading email I missed that my contract was until Oct. 31, 2021, rather than 2020. Then on December 2, 2020, I got another invoice. Enraged, I wrote to challenge them again that same day. They ignored me. The charge started pending on December 19, 2020, so I wrote their useless account service desk again to dispute the charge. But again, no response. Then I was charged on December 21, 2020. I have since disputed the charges with the credit card company. Regus provided me with no notice that my contract was automatically renewed in Oct 2020 for a full-year term. No email, no call, nothing. Even so, knowing how shady they are, I tried to pre-empt any automatic renewal on Sept. 21, 2020, when I wrote to end the contract well before the contract would have renewed. But Regus simply renewed it anyway. Their business practices are unconscionable. Do not sign a contract with this company. You will regret it.

They have Dance Dance Immolation. Essentially, it's DDR, but if you fuck up, the machine SHOOTS A GIGANTIC FIREBALL AT YOU. You wear a complete fireproof suit, and sign a waiver, but I'm sure this is HIGHLY illegal. There are gigantic fire-breathing sculptures, and remote-controlled fire cars. Tessla coils provide lightning and, there are fire filled cauldrons dripping flaming goo. The guy from our work who's associated with these people recently moved to a different job, but hopefully we'll still do the Halloween party here!

Without everyone's help, these sorts of DIY spaces can't survive. I rent a space here, and it's a great place run by great people. The prices are pretty good for approx 380 sqft of space, and there are lots of interesting folks around most of the time. And NIMBY's famous parties are indeed as fantastic as people claim. My only complaint is that it's been a few months and all the various issues with the city have postponed promised improvements to my space, but that's understandable given the issues with the city taking up everyone's time.
