They were communicative, professional, and efficient--three words most people don't associate with contractors. They answered all my questions and responded to feedback. And they went above and beyond--applying a layer of drywall mud to compensate for an unexpected curve so that the window frame was flush with the wall (without an extra charge). If I could give 0 stars I would. This company was quick to respond in June and come give us an estimate for repairing several crumbling bricks on an interior wall of our DC row home, but as soon as we paid our deposit the professionalism stopped. We repeatedly reached out to ask about scheduling the work, and finally got on their "schedule" for a Saturday in September. In the days leading up, we tried to confirm a window for our appointment but got no response to phone calls or emails; we spent the day waiting but they were a no show. After repeated calls and emails again, we finally got "rescheduled" for the following Saturday. Again a no show, with zero communication. After months of being led on and two waisted Saturdays, we are left to dispute the deposit charge with our credit card company. read more

Bricklands performed multiple projects for me over the course of five months in 2020, and all the work came out great! Since they did so much work for me, I'm going to post a thorough review here along with pictures: First and most importantly if you own a historic brick house built anytime before WW1, you need to hire a firm that understands how to tuckpoint them. Bricklands is one of only a handful of masons in Washington DC that does. They mix their own mortar, to the correct hardness and to your color specification. Quiz your mason on this before you contract them. In particular, ask them what hardness grade of mortar they want to use on your bricks. If they know how to work with old bricks, they will immediately be able to answer that question. Bricklands knows. In addition to tuckpointing about half of my historic house, they also bricked a brand new garage that I just finished building. This bricking job used modern techniques but achieved a historic look, and the work was excellent. Just look at the picture. I found Bricklands to be flexible and easy to work with. I see some of the other recent reviewers commenting on timeliness, missed appointments, etc. Admittedly, Bricklands has a weak back office, so if you want that level of attentiveness, look elsewhere for now. The important thing for me was quality of work, detail orientation, and flexibility. They have all that just fine. These guys will not change order you to death. They are flexible in doing some extra things that may have not been in the original contract, and will even redo work if it's not up to your standards. In this respect, I found them very easy to work with. Finally, they are very price competitive. In the Capitol Hill neighborhood there is one larger, better known firm that most referrals will point you to. They are about 1/3 more expensive than Bricklands, and near as I can tell, the quality of the tuckpointing work is the exact same. So, ask yourself if you want to pay for the "champagne and caviar" treatment, or prefer to save some money and work with a straightforward, honest (perhaps slower, slightly less organized) firm. If the latter, go with Bricklands. Do NOT use Bricklands. They came highly recommended by several people on my neighborhood Listserv. Unfortunately they have many issues including missing appointments, not responding to emails and calls, promising to start and end work by certain dates and being months overdue, not fulfilling contracts and having to fix many mistakes dat after day while on site, damaging a significant portion of all of the landscaping next to the house and most importantly causing a huge amount of damage to my roof and gutters when fixing the bricks. We are currently trying to get them to pay for some portion of the huge amount of damage that they caused to the roof and gutters that had been fixed prior to their work and they promised to pay in a signed letter (which I have in addition to multiple emails where they promise to pay for the damages) but they have now decided to change their mind and they do not want to pay. Use any other masons that come recommended. I wish I had. read more

Soon into moving in to our row home, we discovered that our two exterior walls needed complete repointing. We spent weeks getting different quotes and time estimates for the work, and Bricklands was by far the best. The entire team is really responsive. The work on our home ended up being more extensive than we thought, and Bricklands worked overtime to get the project done on schedule and make sure it was the best caliber. I really regret hiring this company to repoint my house. As others have noted, communication is spotty and appointments are missed -- but that's just the beginning. The work this company performed was so poorly done that, months later, the water damage to my walls is actually worse than it was before the repointing. When presented with evidence of the damage, the owner sort of shrugged and said he had difficulty finding good workers. He promised to fix the problems months ago and his employees respond to emails and phone calls with assurances that they'll get it done. And then it doesn't. read more

This company does not prioritize quality of work. While the owner seems knowledgable, they failed to do things that were laid out in the contract, e.g. repoint a particular area, replace cracked brick, caulk windows. They never finished the windows -- told me they did it, which was false. They finally agreed to reimburse me for that unfinished portion. I am still waiting on the check. Pass. read more

The actual work on our steps was well done. But scheduling and communicating with them were a huge hassle, they didn't show up on the right day and they took longer than estimated. The work also did serious damage to our front yard grass and they left a giant mound of sand in front of the house, only removing it after multiple calls, emails and texts. Specifically, they were unresponsive to a number of simple questions posed via email. When they did respond they threatened to not perform the work at all, saying we were taking too long to decide and it wasn't a big enough job for them. They also threatened to raise the price. All in all it was a very unpleasant experience. read more

After having water penetrating through our 100 year old brick walls with deteriorating mortar, Bricklands came to the rescue and the house now looks better than ever. Tuckpointing is a labor-intensive job and their team worked very hard to cut out around every single brick, fill it in with new mortar, and paint over the whole thing. They took care to keep things tidy and cleaned up thoroughly at the end. They also advised and corrected gaps that needed caulking and bad spots that needed new bricks put in. Don't waste your time; find another mason. After 3 scheduled, then rescheduled appointments I am moving on. Although I set up the meeting 4 work days before, my 1st appt was cancelled with 30 minutes notice before the appt; the 2nd appt they never showed up-never called to cancel; this 3rd appt they cancelled 6 minutes before the set time. The excuse this time was the rain. It has been raining for 15 hours prior to the appt and yet the cancellation call was only 6 minutes before our meeting. Bricklands has no respect for your schedule. I moved around 3 meetings this morning and took time off from my job to dash home for our appt. Wow! Bricklands--you are very unprofessional. read more

I can't review their work really because i set up two appointments with them, took two hours at work and they never showed up for either of them. The first apt was for 11 am monday and they called sunday and said it would be 11:30 but 11:30 came and went and I called and they said they weren't coming at all. profuse apology. second appointment was for wednesday at 1 pm. the office called at 1:25 to say that the person was running late and his cell phone was dead but he should be there in five minutes. at 1:45 i called back and they said his cell phone was still dead - sorry, but no way to reach him (never heard of charging a phone through your car? the adapter costs about 3 bucks) - and besides two of their trucks were broken and they are a small family owned business and sometimes things go wrong. again apologies. i went my way and never heard back from them. broken down equipment, can't keep apts and can't even charge a cell phone. been there. not doing that. read more

Bricklands is a true gem among D.C. area brick masons, making it the go-to repointing company on Capitol Hill. We had the facade of our 1890s brick townhouse repointed in the summer of 2016. We learned about Bricklands from two of our neighbors who had their facades repointed by Bricklands in the past few decades. Gerson, the owner, came out to give us an initial estimate. He was incredibly knowledgeable about historic brick and mortar, and he did not pressure us in any way to sign on with his company. Once they started, the workmanship was outstanding. They took great care to seal off the neighboring properties, set up scaffolding, and carefully remove the old mortar from the joints. Gerson was in constant communication with us, prepared a series of mortar samples for us to choose from, and he did not hesitate to tell us that none were quite right at first, even though this meant delays for his workers. Gerson's taste turned out to be impeccable when it came to the final color selection. Their painter, Faustino, stripped all our historic wood windows and cornice before repainting them. He was the most careful and knowledgeable painter we have worked with in Washington thus far, rather spending an extra couple of days to get the work done right than to cut corners. We highly recommend having exterior wood work done by him in conjunction with repointing. The project was completed almost on time, even though the start of the project had been delayed by a few days (nothing unusual among contractors at busy times of year). The end product is stunning and will preserve this house's facade for many years. We couldn't recommend Bricklands more highly. read more
