Started out here for acupuncture for a back pain issue. The treatment seems to be working and is…read morepretty relaxing. My issues have more to do with the environment. It's more of a 'doctor factory'. Little care for the patients and no time. It's more in and out as quickly as possible. Often times putting the needles in quickly and a bit painfully as well. I've often had to wait in the room for more than 20 minutes before seeing the acupuncturist. I actually dressed and left once. It's also not conducive to being relaxed. The walls are paper thin, so you hear every patient conversation, every footstep up and down the corridor and every staff conversation. No one even tries to be quiet. Kitchen timers are set outside each room, so you have loud beeping noises going off during your relaxing treatment - it sounds like America's Test Kitchen. The rooms are also very worn out - definitely need an upgrade, cleaning and new coat of paint. I like and believe in the acupuncture, but if my insurance didn't cover it or I had to pay out of pocket, I wouldn't come here.

Wow! That is all…read more Just kidding, Bob is great at what he does. Has a great awareness and interest in helping you move better. As an adult athlete, I should be doing this more. Now that I've found my spot I'll be getting more regular tune ups. I chose Bob through some recommendations and in knowing that he specializes in sports and orthopedic massage. I would certainly pass along the recommendation to others.

He would talk when I felt like talking, and just let me relax when I didn't. While I am not a regular review writer, I feel compelled to take the time out to share some…read morefeedback on my experience with Doctor Lictenstein. I have been to him a number of times over a year ago while I was suffering with shoulder pressure and massages just wasn't doing it. While I was skeptical of acupuncture therapy, out of desperation, I gave it a try. Within two minutes of introducing myself, he beat me to it pointing out where my pain was and talked me through his remedy plan. Within just a visit or two, I began to feel the lightening up of pressure and after a few more visits, there was no reason to go back, I was healed. Fast forward a year plus later, I pulled out my lower back so bad from either moving furniture or picking up my 10 year old (like he was 10 months old); it was so bad that I was hunched over and could barely take a step or two. I thought a day or two of laying off coupled with a mineral bath would help since I am pretty healthy (practice regular yoga) but to no avail, the pain was not subsiding. On that Monday, I called his office to make an appointment, leaving a voice mail. I soon got a call back from Doctor Lictenstein himself that he was off today but would be glad to come in to the office to help me. I was shocked, in this day and age of automation and structured mentalities that he would be so willing and kind to flex for me; especially that I would not consider myself a regular patient. He was so patient and explained to me what was going on inside my body and how he would help me this time starting with chiropractor therapy and if need be acupuncture to follow. After the adjustment and chiro therapy, I felt slightly better so it was clear that I still needed some help to relieve the discomfort and that is when the magic happened. I explained though that I needed to leave to pick up my kids and he promised me with just ten more minutes it would be worth the stay. Using some needles (tiny ones that I was able to leave with - hello so busy mommy friendly), he gently pierced my lobes in target spots that messaged to pain centers in my brain. After each shot (5-8), he told me to walk around and see if I notice a difference. The best way to explain this magic is brilliant kind voodoo to go; like a doggy bag of fine food the next day. So in sum, not only is Dr. Lictenstein a master of his craft, but he is passionate about what he does, kind, flexible, and totally customer centric - a refreshing escape from big box modern medicine I have experienced otherwise these days.

Over 50? You need your preventive maintenance at Balance Rolfing!…read more I've been working with Richard since I moved to the Hudson Valley more than a year ago. I'm a long time rolfing proponent; rolfing is deep work, and I credit it with relieving two long-time sports injuries that I have suffered sporadically for more than 25 years (ex-Rugby player). I now see Richard a few times a year for regular tune-ups which pay off in preventing neck and back pain as I am a "knowlege worker" who spends a lot of time in front of a monitor. I also do a lot of biking and hiking. Richard is extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful about the the human body and will spend time understanding your particular structure before he begins his work. He embodies the care, skill and thoughtfulness of the best rolfers.

My experience started after dissatisfaction with progress at the chiropractor. My neck pain was not getting better, the chiropractor kept telling me to come back and if I didn't come he blamed my pain on not being there. I wasn't too sure... I contacted Richard after my pregnant wife had work done by him after slipping on ice and hurting her hip. After rearranging my appointment with him a couple of times because of my work, I met him at his Red Hook location. I met him in a clean, well-stocked office/gym which he rents once a week. Richard was friendly and put me at ease. After initial paperwork, we got started. Richard asked many questions about my neck issue, discussed work habits and a possible incident that could have contributed, and carefully considered my answers. He watched me walk around the office and then I got on the table. Apparently, Rolfing is about working on the fascia in the muscles, the tough stringy stuff in a steak that isn't fat but isn't meat. Richard used very long manipulations, like 45 seconds, to assess and move different parts of my neck. He made sure I wasn't in too much pain but was definitely directing a great deal of strength. I was really impressed with Richards knowledge, intuition and observational skills. He assessed and worked on my neck, where I thought the issue was, but also worked on my upper ribs and told me about how much each part of the system influences the other parts and how everything is connected. For 2 days after my session, which lasted more than an hour and a half, my neck was aggravated, something was different and felt worse but different... I was a little worried but also felt like maybe I had been through something significant and my body/neck was recovering from the event. It was true. It had been a big event, the aggravation went away, and now my neck feels better. After many months and visits to the chiropractor, the work that Richard did was significant. It's been two weeks, and wow. I'm really glad I went. I still feel thankful that Richard listened to me, didn't tell me what he thought happened but kept asking questions until he understood as fully as possible based on what I said. I didn't feel Richard presumed or pre judged or jumped in to add to or finish my story. And he really paid attention to what he felt from my body. He was thinking deeply the whole time. I was really impressed. So.... If you have an issue, whether chronic or injury related, I recommend talking to Richard and getting him to work on you.
