I was curious about this place as I never heard of the idea of Bavarian tapas! Also, my mother is from Munich and growing up in Michigan, she often made delicious Bavarian dishes. The owner and our server was very friendly. He told us that he also lived for a time in Munich. When I looked at the Leibhaftig restaurant menu, I knew that I wanted to try everything on it! First things first, I sampled the Pils and ordered a 0,5 L glass. Very tasty. The owner told us that he has a brewery about an hour east of Berlin that makes the Wanke labeled Pils, Dark and Hefeweizen beers; the IPA that is also offered is made at another brewery. My wife ordered an Apfelschorle drink (carbonated apple juice) that was also very good. For my meal I ordered a small white veal sausage served with a pretzel and sweet mustard, traditional roast pork cutlets served with dark beer gravy, pretzel dumplings and a small bowl of crunchy cabbage salad. All wonderfully delicious and carefully and impeccably made. My wife opted for vegetarian fare. She ordered a small semolina (Griessknockerl) soup, beetroot dumplings and a salad. She mentioned this was her favorite meal she had in Germany! We had a delicious baked apple pastry with almond slices (no raisins) served with ice cream to wrap things up. Super delicious food, great beer, charming restaurant and friendly staff! Highly recommended!

The warm waitstaff and barkeeps made us feel right at home. Regarding delicious beers, I ordered the Dunkel and my husband ordered a Pilsner. My Dunkel was delicious and STRONG.......I will leave this part for the end of the review. My husband enjoyed his pilsner. This is one of those places that is like a Keller type setting since you are a bit underground like in a grotto. You can easily visit with folks at the tables next to you if they seem open to it. We visited with an interesting couple from New Zealand and it just made the evening even more idyllic. We ordered the bavarian veal sausage with fresh pretzel and sweet mustard, the fraconian grilled sausages with homemade sauerkraut, and the black lentil salad with celery. When I say every single thing I ate was perfection......I mean it. It fulfilled my dreams of eating actual German food in Germany! I have already searched AI and Pinterest for a dupe of that salad. It was so refreshing and delicious with a nice vinegary bite to cut the richness of the sausages. The veal sausage was my favorite with the most amazing delicate flavor. Hey there, restaurant/brewhouse with the longest name ever......we will meet again. I think I might have been saying something similar as my husband sweetly guided my weaving self down the sidewalk after that strong Dunkel!

With its prime location on Hackescher Markt and easily accessible by the S Bahn and a few other bus lines, you have no excuse not to dine here. The prices will be on the higher end of the spectrum, since this is also tourist central. I needed a venue to accommodate 20 people with good English speaking servers, hence the decision was made to have an early dinner here. For a big group, you'll be seated in their vaulted cellar. The ancient architectural feel of the place, coupled with the dim lighting makes you feel like you've stepped backwards in time. Due to the unstable, humid weather Berlin was experiencing when we dined here, we were moved to the upstairs restaurant which had a more brighter, airy feel. The extensive menu contained soups, some salads, a whole variety of regional dishes and of course, bratwurst. The enormous variety of beer and some wine, plus non alcoholic options also satisfied every person's appetite. A few strong recommendations on the food front: Bavarian potato stew with bacon (add on sausage!), any of the bratwurst plates, and of course, the massive Schweins "hax'n" -- this is a gigantic pork knuckle served on a bed of mashed potatoes and dark beer sauce. You won't be disappointed! The service was also outstanding for the way they handled our big group. That's an automatic extra star earned for Wiehenstephaner.
