We enjoyed our meal at Breezeway. It started out a little rocky, though. We had to wait about 10 minutes before anyone greeted us. The hostess didn't know if they had a table outside even though there were 2 empty. We went to the bar and no one acknowledged us for 10 minutes. Finally, someone asked if we were being helped. Maybe they were short staffed or not as well organized as they could be. Ultimately, the female bartender secured us a table and took our order. She made good suggestions from the menu. I ordered the grilled shrimp skewers, and my husband had a mixed seafood platter that he really enjoyed. He thought the oysters and scallops were great. My shrimp skewers were a bit salty but overall had good seasoning. There was live music and that made the experience more enjoyable, along with the bartender who served us. Overall, I would recommend them, but I would suggest not going during peak season. We went during off peak season and the lack of organization or exhaustion of staff made it a bit "off" despite pretty good food. I've heard that there are extremely long waits during busy times. read more

Breezeway doesn't take reservations, meaning you need to get here early to get a table! We showed up around 4:50 and there was a line out the door. We were told it was a 20 minute wait so we opted to sit outside immediately. The patio is very nice, I much prefer it over the inside. We got the calamari and crab dip for appetizers. Both were alright, the crab dip was better in my opinion. The calamari was underdone. For my main I got the fried shrimp that comes with coleslaw and fries. It was just okay, nothing to write home about. The coleslaw is sweet which isn't my favorite. Overall, the food is fine. Nothing stood out this time around but hopefully we can find a better dish next time we go. read more

It's a lively deck perched right over the water where you can shake a tail feather, listen to the acoustic guitar strumming, and mingle with the locals. Hold onto your tail feathers, because the biggest news on the boardwalk is officially in: the patio bar has got its liquor license. They do have a "No-Frills" Pork Chop: This isn't a fancy, thick-cut artisanal chop topped with mango-habanero chutney. No, this is a classic pork chop that looks like it was grilled by a grumpy uncle who has been staring at the same flattop griddle for thirty years. Sitting right next to the chop is a baked potato wrapped in a sheet of crinkly aluminum foil that is hot enough to melt glass. But don't bother looking around your plate for a pat of butter, just a small scoop of sour cream. You'll quickly realize this potato could have easily used another ten or fifteen minutes in the oven. The food was horrible and not fresh. I ordered the bacon wrapped scallops and a bowl of clam chowder. The bacon wrapped scallops were old, dry and did not taste good. It tasted like leftovers from days ago and the bacon had burnt flavor. Not edible. The bowl of clam chowder was good but it was more the size of a cup than a bowl. My wife ordered the combination platter flounder and shrimp (fried) and it did not have much flavor and was not fresh. We are residence here on the island and have been coming to Breezeway off and on and this is our last time. There are too many other places on the island to eat good food than going here. We've been coming to the island for years. Always picked up from this restaurant. Decided to try to dine in with our girls to support local. We were second in line to get in but waited at least 30 minutes for drinks and appetizers. Then waited an hour for our meal ( corrected by the owner who felt the need to look at our exact ticket time and point out it was 40 something minutes) Still too long. We definitely will not be back based on that interaction. The waitress/staff was not at fault as they were trying their best. The food was pretty good/ but cold when it arrived and am sympathetic that they were short staffed but it would have been nice for them to just own it. read more

Waited about 20 minutes for someone to take the order then over an hour to get the food. Despite ordering the large plates we received a very small portion of seafood and a double portion of French fries and the worst tasting Cole slaw ever. The hush puppies were good. Two plates and a hamburger for our daughter was $100. If it was good I'm sure that would be the going rate for a restaurant on an island. I noticed there weee other 1 star reviews. The hostess forgot about us so we waited almost 2 hours for a table. we asked several times how much longer it would be and were told a few minutes (ended up being 45 more minutes). There were multiple open tables when they seated us so it was obvious we were forgotten. The service was the worst we've ever had. No drink refills, server didn't come back to check on us while we waited 45 minutes for our food. Someone else dropped off the food and the server returned when we were done (again with no refills). We've been here every year on our vacation for the last 5 years but we will not be back after this experience. read more

No flavor to the fried flounder, shrimp and grits had about just 2 ingredients, fried shrimp was ok, crab dip seemed to be thousand island dressing with old bay seasoning definitely without crab. The food, when we finally got it, was great. Delicious crab cakes and an amazing grilled captain's platter with a generous helping of scallops, soft shell crab, shrimp, and fish. However, there's a lot of things that happened that would make me never come back: - We were seated outside and not told it's a different menu, then had to wait to get back inside - It took forever to get any hushpuppies or drinks after we ordered - Our appetizer never came out, meanwhile, I watched our server girl stand behind the little wooden wall at the drink area chit-chatting with a coworker for over 10 minutes; when I asked about our appetizer she went back, then came out and said the kitchen messed up and didn't know we wanted it as an appetizer (yeah right, she never told them) - The crab dip unfortunately wasn't worth the wait; it along with the pita bread was really sad and definitely reheated - The hushpuppies are very mid; no flavor, no corn inside, nothing special about them, just basically corn bread of the most basic kind and the butter is little cold packets instead of some kind of whipped butter with sea salt, honey, spices, or anything - Our food took even longer to come out, and they were not busy, there were many staff and many empty tables; some staff seemed busy, but our server just chit chatted a lot and I saw others just slowly clearing tables and staring out at the sound for 5-10 minutes per table; in total it was 70 minutes from sitting down until we finally got food read more

The ladies at the hosting stand were very good and polite, but that is where the good service stopped. We waited 1.5 hours for a table but it was definitely jammed pack due to the 4th of July holiday weekend. So understandable. We were greeted immediately at our table. They do not have a full bar service so they have beer and spritzers type drinks. So we asked for a twisted tea but they were sold out. Sooooo we settled for unsweetened tea with lemon. The prices were reasonable but if you opt to have your fish broiled, baked or blackened they charge you an additional $3. They are known for their Hush puppies so we were excited to try. We got a complimentary order of 4. They were very light and airy, fried perfectly to a pretty golden crisp. In my opinion they were too sweet. More like a fried donut hole. This may be why people like them, in fact my husband like them. But to me it was like dessert before dinner. We placed an order for calamari and this came out pretty fast. We had to wave the server down to ask for utensils. Then we had to ask for napkins. Then we had to ask for straws. The struggle was real! The calamari was tender and also cooked well BUT there was something sweet in the batter. It was slight but definitely noticeable. It was a no for us. I am pescatarian and have eaten a whole lot of calamari in the USA and all around the world but never have I "ever" had it with something sweet in the batter. We tried drowning it in hot sauce for balance which helped. When our server cleared the table after the appetizer, she touched my knife and fork. It was weird and I didn't understand what the heck was happening because was she taking it to bring me a new set for my entree? Like why are you touching them like that. But then she abruptly plopped them down on the table. My husband said oh wow! Lol! So I asked for more utensils and got the evil eye from her. But girl...I don't want to eat with that after you had your hands all over the part my mouth is going to touch, like wth? She brings me just a fork in one of those paper sleeves so I guess I lost my knife privileges . From that point or after I had been FORKED lol we waited another "45" minutes for our entrees. I waved her down and politely asked if she knew how much longer it would be. She waves her arm in a sweeping motion to reference the restaurant and said ALL of these people are ahead of you. Do you want me to ask the kitchen how long it will be? So I am getting "H.O.T." with that response but I let it go because I KNEW if I say anything it was NOT going to be anything close to polite. In these circumstances if you complain you are the problem. If you say nothing the customer abuse persists throughout the meal. So I let it go. Five minutes later she appears with our food. I ordered the salad with fried oysters (5 or 6 large) and a 1/2 lb of steamed shrimp. My husband ordered a fried combo platter. All cooked very well. Food is tender and not fried to death nor was it too greasy. I have said that several times but let's not mistake that for flavor. This was the most bland fried food I have ever had. Thank god for tartar, cocktail and hot sauce because that help was definitely needed. The stuffed crab was the only item that we both agreed was really good. Well if you like super sweet hush puppies and sweet calamari, then technically that had a flavor too. The steamed shrimp which were large btw were missing even old bay or salt. They had the appearance of seasoning but they were not. Maybe other menu items were better but I will never know lol. We will be in the area through Monday and this one is a huge SKIP! I still tipped the server because although she was NOT good at her job she was probably crumbling under the pressure of a very busy night. Its no excuse but It is also not her fault the food was flavorless. I would NEVER recommend this restaurant nor eat here again even if my server was superb. You can go to just about any other fried fish shack and do much better. It doesn't surprise me that they only have a 3.5 rating. This place is pretty bad. read more

The food was okay at best. We got shrimp, fish, scallops. Comes with fries and slaw and hushpuppies. It wasn't "bad" necessarily...just seemed like it had all been heated up in the microwave multiple times before boxing it up. Whatever. It was a normal meal. Here's were the 1 star comes in: I payed 80$ for 2 of what I described above, and an order of fried pickles. Okay still doesn't sound too crazy right? Food was mid, but atleast you got big portions. NOPE. I was bewildered opening the food to see how little we got. 2 hush puppies. Soggy fries. 3 scallops that they charge extra for, for some reason. Maybe like 8 tiny shrimps. One small slab of very mediocre fish. Cole slaw that looked like it had been sitting out for a while. It was tiny in its entirety. I couldn't believe I paid that much for how little and low quality it all was. Those plates should have been 15$ per person, and even that is being pretty generous, yes even in this economy. Went to this restaurant last night. Ordered grilled shrimp for an up charge.. when our food arrived almost 2 hours later (after asking the kitchen directly since our waitress hadn't checked on our table for over an hour) the food arrived cold and appeared to be microwaved. There wasn't one "grill mark" on it. The shrimp was raw. I refused to eat it. My husband sent his back as it was the same... raw shrimp. My granddaughter had raw shrimp as well. My daughter ate a scallop and got sick on the way home and all night with food poisoning. We had to ask multiple times for a second round of drinks. Our party was a size of 4 adults and 2 kids (the babies didn't eat there) We were charged full price and gratuity was added even tho I would never have tipped the 15% that was automatically added to our bill. Our waitress never once checked on us until we got our food 1.5 hours after we ordered. Water was never brought to the table. Terrible service. Would not come here there are many better options in this area. Suggest Daddy Mac's if you want good service and better food. read more

New to the area and was trying out spots. I typically don't write reviews, but feel like I need to to help out the next person looking for a restaurant. The service here was absolutely terrible we were greeted, and our apps came very quickly. We ordered our meals and waited almost 2 hours for our meal when we spoke to the kitchen regarding our meals as our server had not come and checked on us in the last hour and a half we were told that our food would be right out. The food came raw multiple parties in our group sent back their food. My wife had scallops and got food poisoning on the drive home. The restaurant charged us full price and added gratuity even though the server did not check on us once water was never brought. We finish our drinks within the first 20 minutes of being there and we're waiting on a refill for over an hour. Highly do not recommend upgrading to grilled shrimp as the grilled shrimp looked like just a bag of shrimp they got from Costco and heated up in a microwave. Pulling up, I had high hubs of this place as a location is great, and there was live music. However it was extremely disappointing and management was not accommodating due to their lack of service. read more

We arrived at 6:15pm. We were greeted right away got a round of drinks and apps in. They arrived quickly and we placed orders for our main dishes but this was the last time we saw the server for over an hour. Never once did she come to check in or refill our drinks. We had to go to the kitchen to ask for an update on our meals and another round of drinks. Once we finally got attention our meals were rushed I don't think our meals were even sent into the kitchen. All shrimp for three different orders arrived raw. The request of grilled shrimp was an upcharge and it was clear this was microwaved baby shrimp not one grill mark. I asked for a salad with bleu cheese and I got a salad with ranch dressing. I ate one scallop and got sick on the drive home and was sick all night with food poisoning. The restaurant made us wait over an hour and a half for food provided us with food that wasn't even hot and then charged us full price for the meal. They continued to bring out hush puppies out to make up for the horrible service as if that made sense as these are free. Would avoid this place at all costs. read more

I don't like to say bad things about businesses but I feel the new management needs to know about the problems we had at our meal this evening. First, someone got the coconut shrimp. After three people took bites it was determined they were not cooked inside. We did have them remade but I'm still not sure they were cooked properly so we didn't eat them. A few people got Chicken Alfredo and while it used to just come with broccoli, it came with some pretty strange vegetables like carrots, green beans, and red peppers. The sauce was also not the same as it used to be, not as good as in previous years. Lastly, someone in our group got the flounder which was very heavily breaded, not a lot of fish inside. I hope the new management takes these comments as constructive criticism. We gave eaten here every year on our vacation and this trip was just a bit disappointing. As a long time friend of Topsail Beach I have many fond memories, until last night (30+ years) of the Breezeway. Last night (8/8) I ordered the large Fishermans Platter. Which should have had a piece of flounder. It was definitely not flounder. It was super white dry and fried to a crisp fish. With no taste. The shrimp were soggy and the Scallops were tough. When I ask the waitress, who was polite and respectful, what type of fish this was, she said she didn't' know. The slaw was warm and the French fries tasted as if they had been reheated several times. Upon leaving I asked another young lady about the fish and all she could tell me was they get their fish from Surf City. Very disappointed with the quality. read more

Restaurant with southern charm.. I had heard good things so we took the road-trip from jacksonville early evening to this local spot on the waterway. The restaurant is part of spot that includes a hotel. They sit on same property and share same name. Once you walk in there's a small enclosed lobby with local decor and shells . Then you walk into the restaurant with seating area and are greeted with big fish tank with fish crabs and other critters right at the register. I saw behind register they sell shirts from there too. We were seated as soon as we came in as it was a Thursday..they are not open everyday so when they are open you should get there early to get a good seat with window view on the waterway. We didn't get that table but we enjoyed our spot just as well. We had she crab soup which had lots of crab . The hush puppies were so good! A little sweet but not overly and they always come out hot!! I ordered seafood combo plate of shrimp and oysters.. came with fries and slaw but I focused on the seafood.. our waitress was Mattie and she was very attentive and very nice.. she took good care of us! Our meal was typical fried southern goodness but not heavily breaded.. my oysters were pretty big and pump so good!! This spot is not a chain at all you could see the staff cooking in back and working hard.. fishing and beachy decor lines the walls in the restaurant.. after dinner we took a walk onto the doc as sun was setting.. very peaceful and nice location.. feels miles away from reality!! Our waitress had to me high on gummies or something with THC in it. I'm not against that but not when it results in you being unable to do a job your are being paid for. On May 13 we, and another dear couple went to Breezeway on their boat. Docking was ample, easy and free. Breezeway opens at 5pm so it's best to arrive at least 15-30 minutes early because a line forms and in the busy summer season, there is a huge demand for Breezeway! We've tried to eat at Breezeway for four years and it just never worked out. My meal? TENDER Flounder, the best TENDER scallops & TENDER oysters I've ever eaten, & All lightly fried. Cole slaw was LIKE candy! Hush puppies were unlike any we've ever had. Light & delicious!!! My meal included deviled crab but I didn't love this as much as the rest of my meal. It was good, but the rest of my meal was epic! Everything everyone had was delicious and Alyssa's service was delightful and very attentive! The ambiance is lovely and our experience could not have been better!!! We will gladly be back!!! Not to vacationers; they do not reserve seats or take reservations so if you have a party over six, be patient during busy times so they can properly accommodate your party. read more

I can't believe they haven't figured out a way to handle Togo or pickup orders and won't even answer the phone on the weekends. It truly has one of the best views of the sound however it's just not worth the money for a bunch of frozen fried food. Stopped by with my 17 & 19 year olds for some seafood. Very busy during our dinner so waitresses were constantly on the move but still good service considering the circumstances. Fried pickles were breaded chip style and 2 lb of peel and eat shrimp (not sure the count number but pretty large shrimp) were good as starters. I had Captain platter blackened and it was delicious, especially the scallops. One kid had fried flounder platter and the other had snow crab platter. Both were happy with their choices.
