Some of the worst service I've ever experienced in my life. It wouldn't matter if the food was amazing. Imagine this. The owner yelling at you as the only customer in the restaurant at 11 pm for showing a water bottle after the waitress never brought the water you ordered. This, after spending $30 on dinner and drinks. Then imagine for a minute, how uncomfortable you'd feel if he started screaming obscenities, angry at something at the bar, and this went on for over 5 minutes on and off. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. While it's not the worst place in the world, it is right in a prime location next to where Saline holds its street events. So the foot traffic is great and from the outside it looks excellent. If you get hoodwinked like I did, be prepared to be disappointed. First, our waittress ignored us for real. She knew she was ignoring us too because we sat there waiting for us and she would walk very fast past our booth and not look in our direction. she would even pick up dirty plates at other tables multiple times before showing us any attention. another reason I was disappointed, there wasn't a single Michigan brew on tap. Just standard run-of-the-mill any bar would have. Even Friday's has a better selection. The menu has just about everything under the sun, which I've learned means they don't really do anything well. And that proved true again because I had the *best item on the menu* - the ribs with their homemade sauce. Too tangy and too dry. The fried calamari was odd too - long strips of squid fried. never seen something like that before, but i imagine it was frozen and dropped from a bag. My date's chicken was very dry - and she ate very little - and refused to take it home. on a positive note, my date said her broccolli slaw was the best part of her meal. I thought it was terrible, but I don't like slaw. All in all, not worth the trouble. I won't go back. It's probably a better place than I rated it, but on a busy night, with such poor food and service, i wouldn't recommend anyone go there. read more

I ate here with my daughter yesterday. Total 5 stars for sure. It was easy to find, in a great location. As soon as we walked in, we were welcomed warmly and as we sat down, we both commented on how nice and clean everything looked. It was a nice place to be cozy in on such a cold day. We ordered the fried pickles, which we actually took pictures of because I've never seen them presented that way before. They come out stacked up in the design of a little house like lincoln logs and were drizzled with a homemade sauce that was delicious. It wasn't marinara sauce and it wasn't ranch like you would normally find. It was something else, a sort of half spicy, half sweet orange/pink homemade dressing. All I know is that they were awesome. The french onion soup was totally legit too. The best part was the buffalo meat burger, cooked perfectly medium rare and topped with sauteed onions and fresh sliced jalapeno peppers. It had some serious heat from those peppers, but holy crap was it ever delicious. They did NOT skimp on the burger, for sure. We could even finish all the fries, even though they were delicious. The service from our waitress Krystal was absolutely impeccable. She was efficient, friendly, helpful and always wore a smile. Also, the owner and the head chef both took a moment to give a friendly smile, say hello and make sure everything was cool at our table. It appeared to me that they have almost daily food and beer specials that sound both creative and delicious. I look forward to trying more of them. Oh yeah, and a HUGE selection of beers you've never heard of in addition to ones you have. What more can I say? It was delicious, friendly, cozy and reasonably priced considering outstanding quality of food that we received. Seriously as good as it gets. I really do feel bad giving any establishment a 1 star review so I am generously offering up another. When you see a restaurant like this, you assume you're in for something good, maybe even great. It's a great building, with outside seating and a full bar. We ended up getting seated in the nose bleed section all the way in the back. All the other restaurant goers were either elderly or with little kids. This immediately made the atmosphere feel equivalent to a Bob Evans or a Big Boy, you know, except 10x times as expensive. I ordered some kind of burger, an appetizer and a drink. The wait for the food was pretty average I guess, about 35-45 minutes. At this point though I was feeling pretty uncomfortable. I'm not digging the vibes of this place. Food comes out... and unfortunately this is where my 1 star rating really comes in... it was really terrible. When I come to a nice sit down restaurant like this and pay 10 bucks for a burger, it ought to be a better quality than fast food. And this wasn't. Hell, this was worse. It was bland, it was overcooked, they put so much cheese on it, that my plate was completely covered in the drippings of cheese... It was horrible. This is how I imagine prison food tastes. I didn't finish it. We left a table full of food, and I feel terrible about it, but I couldn't stomach it. Our waitress was very nice, so we still left a full tip, but I absolutely will never think about coming back to this place until it's under new management... read more

Solid choice for lunch in Saline. We ordered a French Dip and a Ruben both with regular fries. Food was good air conditioning was cold. Food was reasonably priced 9-12 for sandwiches. Cook/chef stopped by table at lunch which I thought was nice. Only complaint was the table had apparently only been cleaned around the sirens left on the table, when we moved them there was good under them. read more

We ate here recently. My daughter ordered both the chicken nuggets and grilled cheese from the kids menue. They both came with fries...applesauce and carrots/celery. We told them to hold all of the sides from one of her meals. I ordered the Reubens and asked for extra saurkrout on my sandwich. When the bill came...they charged me a dollar for the extra saurkrout. The did not discount the kids meal witch was fine with me but come on...a little give and take guys! .. read more

Omg I just had the best salmon in a pretzel roll!!!! Omg it was "to die for"!!! I just enjoyed it immensely !! The normal menu item was this Salmon sandwich but then I saw that they had "pretzel rolls" and I asked them to make a Salmon sandwich on a pretzel roll and OMG...it was "to die for"! The atmosphere is a bit like an average bar, kinda dark...oh yea..it "IS" a bar! LOL....No..but really, it's a bit Celtic looking inside as far as the decor goes. I don't think I've ever had the greatest servers. I've never remembered a one of them!?? When you've visited a bar to meet your friends and you visit every 2 months, this same venue (yes, shame on me, I forget to check in sometimes...my bad?) would get a bit "old", right? Well, the food is great, really! The prices are not terrible either! The only thing I can really complain about is that the servers don't really give you much attention other than serving you and quickly turning over the tables. Oh...don't get me wrong...we are always served with a smile and a pleasant waitstaff person! They are just not super attentive and the reason that we meet at this bar/restaurant is because our friends live in Onstead , MI and we live in Canton, MI. We meet in the middle and Saline just happens to be the middle ground "meeting point". Soooo...I say "yay' to the food and "yay" to the prices and the atmosphere and servers get a "eh- it's OK"...but I won't give them a "Nay"....OK?? Hey..I'm a poet and didn't even know it! So check it out yourself, as my husband likes to try new and different foods and they have a "Bison burger" made from real Bison meet! He loves that big burger with the fixings on it! They also have their "house Chilli" which is made from Bison meat, but if you don't ask, they don't really tell you that one! LOL...it's true, because I was going to get the chilli once and I asked about the meat inside of their chilli and the server told me "yes, it is in fact, Bison meat"...No, thanks...not for this city girl! But go and enjoy the Traverse City cherry/Chicken salad, it is scrumptious and I get it about every other time. It comes with Cesar dressing and you get grilled chicken and dried cherries, and the rest of the salad is much like a regular Cesar ! Enjoy!! read more

Always a fan of the Tubetti and Cheese, which is actually a unique entry in the vast field of specialty mac and cheeses that have sprung up over the landscape. Dubliner Irish cheddar, leeks, bacon, and a sprinkling of nutmeg make this dish incredibly rich. I only occasionally add the corned beef (chicken also an option), and I always have a generous leftover portion to take home. I rarely get anything else on the menu, though I have tried several burgers, salads, other dishes, which have always been quite good. Our go-to appetizer is the fried pickle spears; admittedly, this is an appetizer of second resort, as the much-missed mozzelunas have been removed from the menu. Most impressive about the Brecon Grille's menu, to my mind, is the always interesting monthly/seasonal menu. It's usually got some very interesting things to consider! The atmosphere is cozy, and the walls have pictures of Brecon, Wales (Saline's sister city). I find this to be the best restaurant in Saline in terms of consistency of quality and service. read more

I am shocked at the reviews of this place. I have been here twice in the last 3 weeks and am falling in love with this place. The Bavarian Roll deli style with waffle fries on a pretzel bun is amazing. The service has been good so far for us. It has been a Sunday early evening every time that I have been there but still I see no reason for these negative reviews. We had a horrible experience at Salt Springs Brewery and left to get dinner at Brecon Grille. We had fabulous service! Drinks and food were very good. Turkey Reubens, a French Dip, and a loaded burger were delivered to our table quickly. The Perrin Lager was light and refreshing. Stopped in here during "happy hour" as it was around 4:45 on a Tuesday as I had to go to the Saline office of my eye doctor for a checkup and wasn't really ready to hit the road and run smack dab into rush hour. So I stopped in to check it out... there was literally no one else in there except the staff. They do have happy hour beer specials which was good, but I think if they promoted more and or had better food specials, they'd get more traffic. I had a very good IPA from Griffen Claw as a $3 happy hour special, along with some cajun chicken tenders for my snack. They were ok, but i could tell they were kind of just frozen with a little spicy seasoning on it. The menu looked a little overpriced as well, but I guess I would have to come back and try a burger as those seemed like the best value, I just unfortunately wasn't in at a lunch time. My bartender actually had a good knowledge of the menu and actually was helping another guest who walked in while i was eating pick out some gluten free options so i think their staff is decently trained and friendly enough. If I lived in Saline or close to it, I would proably be in more often on weekends for a bar and burger hangout, as I think that's what they're more geared for. I will have to try Mac's happy hour across the street and compare. read more

Let me start by saying that I am growing into a HUGE foodie, and am becoming very selective of my restaurants and food choices... and I think the Brecon is AWESOME! It is by far mine and my wife's favorite little place to eat, and we have brought our friends there many, MANY times and everyone agrees. We love the monthly seasonal menu. Paul, the owner, has excellent taste and more importantly, and excellent philosophy about food. Everything I've had has always been well prepared, and you can trust me... we have eaten there about once a month for the past 3 years! Sometimes more! I always recommend their coconut shrimp (with secret sauce you will want to lick out of the bowl). Their calimari strips are NOT frozen, but long, meaty cuts of choice calimari steak. Never rubbery, always tasty... the best calimari I have had in any restaurant, even higher priced seafood restaurants in the area. Can I just say that I almost always order a cup of the potato beer cheese soup (or whatever it is called). Definitely comfort food! Goat cheese stuffed portobellas... the burnin' brecon burger... the list goes on and on. I've had almost everything on their menu more than once! The only negative thing I can say is that i miss the old days with the "All-U-Can-Eat" crab and prime rib. Bring it back!!!! Also, I can't wait until May 1, 2010 when I can go there have it be smoke-free. I think that will only make food taste even better at every place you go! Thank you Michigan legislature! No offense, smokers... I just personally can't take it and my wife's asthma can't either. We will keep coming back and bringing our friends to this highly-underrated restaurant! Give it a shot before you believe any critics (or before you believe me) and decide for yourself. I don't think you will be disappointed... unless you're that other guy who wrote on here. This was a new place that we tried and Saline and There were some highlights! We really love the brussels sprouts small plate. The flavors in it were very good and the brussels sprouts were well cooked. The disappointing thing was the main dishes were not very great. I ordered the Redskin potatoes on the side of my burger. The potatoes were so salty that I could not eat them. They got really busy near the end of the night when we were still there and service was somewhat slow. They were quite accommodating with the potatoes and give me fries instead when I said something about it. I probably would not try this place again but if you visit do try the brussels sprouts! read more

My husband received a gift certificate for this restaurant and we decided to check it out on a weeknight. We loved the place. The ambiance is similar to a nice local bar and grill, it's small, and bustling, but cozy with high booths and good lighting. We ordered drinks, and although the waitstaff was a little slower, but it was not extraordinary, given the fact that the restaurant was at capacity when we arrived. I ordered the Seafood ravioli and buffalo chili, my husband ordered the ribs and my little one ordered the fish and chips. We also ordered the fried pickles. Get the fried pickles. The kids meals are reasonably priced and portioned and many come with applesauce and carrots on the side The ravioli was melt in your mouth heavenly delicious, and I didn't get a taste of the fish and chips, my daughter inhaled it so quickly. My husband loved the ribs. The chili is spicy, HOT but very good. The food was served piping hot and reasonably quickly (We had a five year old with us and she didn't seem to bore while waiting. The prices are a little higher than a local bar and grill, but the food was worth the additional price. The waitstaff was busy, but seemed to all be attentive, and we even had another waitress help us out when we forgot something after our waitress left with our order. read more

I'd like to give 0 stars for how many bad experiences I've had at this horrible establishment. The first time I came I ordered an appetizer that took over an hour and was never asked if I wanted refills on drinks. The second time I came for saline's concert series in the summer and it's the only bar within ears distance of the stage and I waited over a half hour to order one drink, and then sat at my table with an empty cup for another half hour and had to go into the bar and pay so I could leave with no waitress in sight. At another day during the concert series I thought I would try once more and they wouldn't seat me at one of the 4 open tables because they were for 4 people and I was by myself. Then once I finally got seated I watched the waitress pass me 9 times and stop at the tables on both sides of me and ignore me. A different waitress came out eventually from inside and took my order but the service was still incredibly slow when there was nobody inside the place. I don't understand why this place still is open, the food isn't good, the service is horrible and rude, and they are poorly managed. Saline needs a change on this corner and soon. read more

Had a pretty good meal at the Brecon Grille while visiting family in Michigan. It took a bit for one of the waiters to notice us, but once she did, it was excellent service all around (think they were short on people that night). Great portion sizes, nicely cooked burgers, and they make a good sweet potato fry. Highlight is definitely the amount of Michigan beers they have on tap. I had a Kolsch-style beer that was very tasty, while others in my party had Hefeweizens and Reds they said were excellent. I'd go back for the beer selection alone. It's a small place and was hopping on a Tuesday night, so keep that in mind before you bring in a larger group (we were a party of five). But if you're in the mood for a beer and burger, Brecon Grille's a good choice. read more

I was in town for a family gathering. The Brecon Grille quickly became my go to place. The beer list was excellent, the bourbon selection was amazing with brands that are hard to find in restaurants where I live. Each time I ate here the food was delicious and prepared exactly how I had ordered. The small plate selection was very good, and were much larger than your typical "small plate". But you know what made this place one of the best places I've ever been in... it was the owner and his staff, specifically our waitress. She was my bartender on the first night I was in town and by lunch the next day when she was our server she already had memorized my drink of choice. Sadly, that's unheard of in the hospitality industry today but so appreciated. We had called in last minute to see if they could accommodate our large party on the last night of our weekend. Even with a small breakdown in communication on our part, (one which could have made tough for the staff to get us in) the owner went out of his way to personally see to it that all 15 of us sat together. Even when additional people started to trickle in unexpectedly, everyone there was patient and saw to it that our party all sat together. This was no small feat considering it was 7 on a Saturday night. Again, fantastic hospitality! We were lucky enough to get the same server that I had had previously and she did not disappoint. In fact she was amazing! Our whole party could not believe how efficient and patient and courteous she was. Everything came out quickly and was cooked to perfection. Thank you Brecon Grille for three truly wonderful dining experiences. Also, big shout out to Dave and Emily ( I believe I got that right). Two locals I met at the bar on my first visit. They were such delightful company and truly should work for the chamber of commerce because their love for the Brecon Grille and Saline would make anyone want to visit. read more

My spouse and I have lived in Saline for 20 years and have eaten at Brecon Grille many times. This past Friday we arrived for dinner at 7:00 p.m. There was an empty table for 4 and we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. When we asked why we couldn't be seated when they had an empty table, we were told that they would only seat a party of 3 at that table. Wow. Talk about bad business practices. I would have asked to speak with the manager, but years ago I spoke with him about the smoking section making the entire restaurant smoky and he told me I didn't have to eat there. The Brecon Grille is an upscale bar / restaurant in downtown Saline. The staff is friendly, but if you're a regular there don't be surprised if you arrive dripping wet from a storm and ask for a bar-rag, you might be reminded it isn't a bath house (in jest of course). The cooks do a great job with a limited amount of space, the servers are always on their toes making sure people are taken care of, the bartender is world-renowned in his field (not bartending), and the owner is a friendly guy who is genuinely interested in people having a good time. The bar is comfortable (including hooks underneath for purses, etc...), the restrooms clean, the napkins are cloth, the food is always very good (except for one time out of the many, many of times I've been there), there's usually a monthly beer special, but if you arrive in a sleeveless t-shirt you may be chided for it. All in all, it's a nice place to drop in for a drink, or stay longer for a meal. About the only thing I'd change, Paul, is to regularly have something for people to snack on at the bar -- like those home-made kettle chips you used to have, and the nuts were pretty good too. (I don't know if Paul is going to read this, so please make sure to ask for him and mention this if you agree.) read more

Drove by this place every day and I finally took my girlfriend in last week. It was a cozy setting with seating outside and it looked pretty nice. We both ordered a different burger and ordered them both medium, the patties were so overcooked that they could have been used as weapons. There are two things that create a positive dining experience: great food and great service. I received neither at the Brecon Grill. When the manager asked for my ID after viewing me share a beer with my father the manager was extremely rude. He started the conversation, after literally running across the room, with, "We have a problem!' At first I thought this was in reference to the fact that we had been waiting over an hour for our meal, but in fact it was because he wanted to see my ID. I, being 22-years-old at the time, showed my ID to prove that I was of legal age to drink. Later I let him know that this behavior was unacceptable--there's nothing wrong with asking for ID, but being polite and amiable would have been nice--and he continued to be rude. The food that we did receive was mediocre, and the interaction with the manager really turned a nice family dinner into a negative experience. As someone who is waiting tables to make it through university, I was shocked by such a rude interaction with front of the house staff. Please do not go to the Brecon Grill. Mac's and Dan's Tavern are fantastic alternatives. Update: As you can see by the comment in response to my review, the owner of the Brecon Grille does not value the opinion of the customers of his restaurant. Additionally, the owner clearly is lying about the interaction, trying to discredit my review by questioning my age and patronizing my opinion. As I stated in the review, I was 22-years-old at the time of the interaction. read more

Had a lovely lunch here. The place is old-timey, with tin ceilings and lots of exposed brick and wood work. Cozy and cool, we had fish tacos, seafood burritos, and seafood ravioli. The atmosphere is traditional Irish with Celtic knot imagery, chocolate browns, sage greens and mustard yellows. Slight kitsch flare with assorted photographs and fake ivy. My brother got the house chili. It comes in a coffee mug with all the fixings on the side: souffle cups of onion, cheddar cheese and sour cream perch on the saucer accompanying. He said it was a bit tomato-y. "Good," was his response. For dinner, my brother, mum and I all ordered the fish and chips. I upgraded to sweet potato fries. The fish was medium breaded with unseasoned batter, much to my brothers dismay, but it was good with malted vinegar, lemon and light tarter sauce. Sweet potato fries were light and crispy, as were the regular. I'd liken the regular to Burger King fries, with similar texture. the fish and chips were not mind blowing by any means, but decent. My sister ordered the flatiron steak with grilled zucchini and fries. The steak was fatty and tough. The accompanying bistro sauce was very mayonnaise-y. Not a good dinner experience for her.
