Peculiar Pancake Experience‍ I went there with brother , sister in law , and their son's family ( wife and five children, ages 2 and a half to 13), on my brother's birthday, following a visit to my aunt Edith's gravesite at the Riverview cemetery in Ironwood. The service was very good: in fact, when I told the waitress that it was my brother's birthday, his 75th, they surprised us at the end with a nice little dessert with a candle in it. Again, the atmosphere was very pleasant, help by it being a sunny day. The restaurant was fairly filled with people all enjoying their meals. As for the food, I'm going to comment on my brothers in my own. My brother ordered and eggs Benedict, his comment was that it "wasn't the best eggs Benedict he had ever had. " As for my food, all I can say is, it was a disaster. I ordered the pancakes, which sounded delightful. My mistake was in ordering strawberries with the pancakes. I expected several sliced fresh strawberries at top several fluffy pancakes, which were actually recommended to me by the waitress. When my pancakes are running, I could barely see them as all I saw on my plate was a soup of strawberry fluid. My sister-in-law described it as a plate of pie filling out of curiosity I dug through the filling to see whether or not there were pancakes beneath the goo. I found the pancakes. After scooping the strawberry goo into a bowl I was able to get the sense that they were indeed pancakes. That probably tasted pretty good if they weren't covered with strawberry goo If you must go to this restaurant, and you very likely might have to as there aren't many other choices along US too, and Ironwood, all I can say is God sake, order the pancakes plain read more

Excellent food and friendly staff. We typically don't repeat a restaurant when on vacation but we made an exception for this place. We highly recommend the omelettes. The first time we were here my son ordered and omelette and I ordered the grilled chicken plate. The grilled chicken was cooked perfectly and my sons omelette was excellent. I like an omelette that is not cooked brown which means over cooked to me. My omelette was cooked nice and loaded with tomato, bacon, spinach, avocado,and cheese with a hollandaise sauce. We stopped here on our trip from MN, looked like one of those little hole in the wall places with great food, we were right. Food was the best we had our whole vacation, the service was another thing. We had this waiter named Ethan, he was the friendliest, funniest most outgoing waiter I have ever experienced in my life, and I'm 56yrs old. My nephew had the Hawaiian burger and Ethan told us this story about how the Hawaiian luau came about, the most charming, friendliest guy you will ever meet. A family restaurant (meaning no alcohol), that serves home cooking from old family recipes. I was surprised to see a menu with items such as Pork Roast with stuffing, or Meat Loaf meals. Where else today can you get a fruit plate, hot steaming vegetables, salad, and a hearty serving of a meat dish with your choice of potatoes? Service was exceptional. I asked the waitress about a certain ingredient that may make me end up in the emergency room and she checked with the chef and found the dastardly ingredient not mentioned on the menu embedded in my first choice and then part of my second choice which they gladly made a quick substitution. I certainly compensated on my tip line for the extra trips and concern. There aren't many choices in Ironwood in the evening and certainly no trend setting places but I would always recommend the Breakwater for those looking for a full meal either passing through or staying the night..too bad no pasties. read more

We visited this place while on our way to Copper Harbor. I love places that serve breakfast all day! The Breakwater had a good menu at good prices. I ordered the biscuits and gravy. I found the biscuits a little too hard for my liking. It took some work to cut them. The gravy was excellent though. The kids had pancakes, which I remember tasting good as well. The service here was good too. There was a brief spell where I could've used more water and the waitress was no where to be found, but hey, we all need breaks. Service was poor: We came in with a large group when it was dead. We didn't tell them we wanted the food to come out when available which lead to some of it being luke warm at best when it finally came out. Pretty much exactly what you would expect from the way looks, an American Family Resturant. The food is generally good with a couple exceptions. My biggest issue is with the bacon. They deep fry the bacon which gives it a charred texture and renders it fairly tasteless. However, like some other reviews have pointed out, it's essentially the only place you can order fruit with your breakfast. It's also equipped to handle weekend breakfast crowds well. Service is generally good but the coffee cups are small so if your server runs into someone they know, it could stand empty for a while (which has happened several times). Probably the best pick for a quick weekend breakfast with lighter menu options. Just don't order the bacon. Or maybe, order the bacon, complain about it and maybe they will realize that's not a good way to cook bacon. read more

Not sure why so many poor reviews. We went here for breakfast on a recommendation from our motel. It's a diner, not a gourmet experience. Still, I had to give 5 stars, because we could find absolutely nothing to complain about. Food is good, portions are healthy, prices are fair, server was friendly and professional, and the food came out lightening fast, which we needed so we could hit the road. Only after we got there did we realize we have eaten at their Superior, WI location several times, and we love it. I am sad now that we didn't get some pie to go to eat for lunch! read more

The Breakwater moved into the old Big Boy Restaurant after it changed owners. It still has the "big boy" feel to it (along with most of the original decor) Don't let this fool you though. it's still every bit the good greasy spoon Big Boy used to be but with a much bigger and better menu. I ate here and then came back to my room and looked at the reviews. Wow, my experience was way better than a lot on here. I'm glad now I couldn't get any cell service here to check Yelp from my phone before trying it or I probably would have gone someplace else and missed out on the best breakfast I've had in years. Probably what surprised me the most was that by the time my food arrived (pretty quickly) I was only just starting to feel the slightest bit hungry so it's not like I was feeling like I was starving and anything would have tasted great. Just being the picky person that I am I couldn't resist trying to find fault with my meal and the only thing I could maybe find a fault in was that for my taste preference the breading on the chicken fried steak may have been just a little touch too peppery for me. I suspect though that for most people they wouldn't have felt that way. The young lady who served me was very attentive and friendly. The professional way she handled her duties as a server is what I would have hoped to get from somebody who'd been a server for at least 10 years and by the looks of her I doubt if she's old enough to have been working for more than a couple of years. Kudos to her for putting the icing on the cake and making it a great dining experience. I would strongly recommend that you not let the previous bad reviews deter you form visiting this restaurant. I had breakfast for supper so I can't speak to other types of food they serve, but they certainly do breakfast great. This was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. We had 4 servers who had no idea what they were doing, we waited over 45 minutes for our food, which was served ice cold. My mom ordered her salad and steak with no onions, and both came out smothered in onions. When she asked for butter and sour cream for her potato she got nothing but attitude from the server. We were served flat soda and told it was because the Co2 machine was broken. Why would you serve uncarbonated soda without letting customers know? I understand that it's a holiday, and they are closing early, but we arrived over 2 hours before they were due to close and we did not leave until 20 minutes before they were due to close. The restaurant needs better organization, better staff, and an education on manners. Never again will I dine at the Breakwater. read more

We stopped on our way home from the ice caves to eat a late lunch and gave the breakwater a try. I ordered a Ashland burger new on the menu and watched as the largely teenage staff goofed around in the back and another couple came in and left due to lack of attention. I ordered a medium burger and a charcoaled to a crisp burger came back. The cheese was imitation quality and I was unable to eat it. I did eat what was somewhat edible of my burger and left the rest of my plate. The onion rings were ok. I had asked the waitress if the onion rings were crispy coated or smooth and a male staff member yelled back that all the rings come prebattered and he didn't know. The rest of my family was also disappointed in their meals. My husbands chicken was undercooked and smelled funny, his biscuit cold and mashed potatoes looked like a science experiment. Steer clear of this resteraunt if your truly hungry. Luckily we are headed south on our way home and will get some real food. read more

I hadn't been back here for years; one too many bad experiences. I gave it another chance last week and had a bad meal...again. My eggs were cold and like rubber, pancakes were crusty and cold and the service was beyond slow. The inside of this place is in dire need of cleaning and fresh paint since it is sadly neglected and run-down. It took 45 minutes to get cold breakfast food and another 20 minutes to hunt down my check. I won't be back unless there is new owners. read more
