Out of all the escape rooms I have been to in Edmonton, Breakout is near the top of the list. On the outside, Breakout doesn't look like much. It's in an older strip mall across from the Doubletree Hotel; the windows are all covered up. When you walk into Breakout, it doesn't look like much, either. It's kind of dark and it doesn't have a very "welcoming" feel, but the people who work here are pretty friendly. Sometimes you can't judge a business based on the outside. We chose to play out "The Bomb" scenario and it was actually pretty cool - Our team was split into different rooms which makes for a very different challenge compared to other escape rooms I have been to. I won't give much away, but if you are going to do this room, make sure you have a very strong team (and people who aren't afraid of small spaces). One thing we found interesting is that Breakout and Escape City have a Loyalty Card together - you can purchase it from either business - which offers you 20% off for the cardholder at both Breakout and Escape City each time you visit, your first game with it is free, and you get to play for free on your birthday (or within a week of your birthday). I would definitely return to Breakout, but I will be trying one of the other rooms. Hopefully they are just as great as this one! read more

I came to Breakout Entertainment last week with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday! We did the "Cube" room which was released about a month ago and so far there are no escapes! We got about 3/4 of the way through when time ran out. I honestly don't know if we could have solved it in another 45 minutes... We were stuck! The staff were fabulous and kept us entertained while waiting to start our game with brain teasers. At $25 a person, the entertainment value is pretty decent and it's cool that they have a wall of fame wall with best times and of course ever changing escape rooms to keep you coming back. We've been frequenting this place since it first opened. Staff are friendly; their hints are super helpful, although this is dependent on who is working that day(some of the people I've encountered are really strict on the "two hints" only rule and will give you just ONE thing to point you in the right direction. I personally love it when they will come in twice, but give you a bit more guidance). Some of the puzzles are a bit of a reach (the kind where you probably never would've been able to make sense of if you had not used a hint), but we're starting to see an improvement now that they are more established. Big fan of how elaborate some of the rooms are. Who doesn't love a secret trap door??? Washroom is a bit on the grungy side; they definitely cheaped out on fixing that up. I had a friend from out of town come visit me one weekend and I wanted to make sure we had lots of fun things to do, so after a recommendation I decided to book with Breakout! We went in not knowing much and with little expectation. Having heard about it via another Yelper, I had to check it out. They have a great online booking system which allows you to book which room and time you'd like. On the weekends they book up almost a full month in advance, so keep that in mind when you're booking your breakout. They have some rooms which are more difficult than others, so maybe call and ask if you're unsure. We booked the 1408 room which was a paranormal themed room. It was very difficult and we were given very little direction on what to look for, it wasn't easy! The staff member that was helping us really made us feel like we were stupid, as if the clues were obvious and how could we have not figured it out... That left us feeling a little dumb! However, we did have a lot of fun! I'm thinking next time we will book a more "beginner" room. read more

I've been to this place twice. The first time was a massive failure, because I went with my work group and they are a bunch of dummies. Heh heh. We failed that time. The Second time, I chose my smartest friends who were available and we completed a brand new room BOMB in record time. I liked the idea of the escape room, but it wasn't so much an escape room as a series of puzzles in a room. What I mean was, as no point do you get to smash things or pry things off the room. Agility and Strength play nothing into this room. The puzzles we completed were somewhat thematic, but not enough so that I felt like was trying to actually escape a room. Does that make sense? Without spoiling it, I would say that the room could have been more thematic if there was puzzles you could solve with brute strength or labor. It's real feeling, but not real feeling enough. The idea of breakout room is fantastic! The theme of the room was well animated, and the scene that was set was awesome! However, here are the issues for us: 1) size of the group: Each group going into a room has to be 6 people. The room was very crowded, and as a result of the size of the group, it is hard for everyone to get involved. What ended up happening to us was there were three people we didn't know, and these people ended up hogging all the clues, leaving us to simply hold the flashlights. The size of the groups going in needs to be smaller. Research suggests that people work best in groups of 3-4, not 6. 2) price: 25 dollars a person for 45 minutes is way too much money, especially considering I paid that money to simply hold a flashlight. I can go rock climbing for longer for much cheaper in Edmonton. I can go see a movie for half the price, and a movie takes up more of my day. Price should be set per group, and perhaps $50 for a time slot (all included) would be fair. This way, you could book a time slot for two people if you would like, or four people, and not have to share a room with some very bossy, over controlling people who only allow you to hold a flashlight for them while they solve everything. Overall, cool idea, could be something I would do again. But, as it stands, I will not be going back, because I feel the idea has been poorly implemented. I tried Breakout's The Awakening room over the weekend with three friends and it was so much fun that I can't stop thinking about it. The puzzles are intricate and require a solid amount of brainpower. The twists and turns were surprising and well-thought-out. We spent an hour after our game talking about the last clue, which we didn't have time to get (sadly, we failed). This was my first experience with live action escape gaming and it's definitely one that lingers with you. I'm a huge fan of adventure and puzzle video games, so this was right up my alley. I'm already looking into booking my next game! This has been the best $20 I've ever spent. I can't recommend this place enough. And, even if you're used to places that are more intricate and have more money to put into the experience, there's no reason why you can't get into the Breakout experience and just enjoy yourself. I've been to Breakout now three times; my first experience in the Secret Lab room was the best, and the next two times, in The Bomb and 1408 just didn't measure up. I found the Secret Lab clues were thematic and were possible to decode (even though yes, we did require the 2 hints from the Breakout staff), but in The Bomb and 1408, some puzzles were just so far fetched and not in keeping with the theme that the experience became a bit frustrating and not all that fun. One of the Breakout staff told me that 1408 is the hardest room, and my husband and I were on our own, so it was virtually impossible to "breakout" on time. $25 for 45 minutes is on the pricey side. I think I will be taking a break from Breakout for awhile now, but if you want to try it out for the first time, I'd recommend trying Secret Lab. And make sure to bring teammates that also like puzzles/decoding tasks. read more

My friend invited me out to this place and he picked a great scene the lab scene. Full of math and chemistry. The fellow working there was a great guy the only issue was the folks who joined us (my friend was unaware he could have chosen to do the lab by ourselves when he booked it). Instead of using the clues in the room to get to the next room, they picked the locks. My friend and I were in the middle of decoding the formulas when they declared we'd won cause they got the door open. While we technically succeeded cause we escaped, we missed like 50% of the game. My team of 8 did the B.O.M.B themed escape room at Breakout. I've done a couple other rooms at this location and had tons of fun. This room was fun as well but the female employee who gave us the hints and explained the room after we failed had a bit of an attitude problem. Look lady, I know you obviously know how to escape the room because you WORK there but that doesn't give you the right to have a condescending attitude towards us and treat us like idiots. If you hate your job so much, get a different one. Despite failing to escape we had tons of fun even with the Debbie Downer putting a damper on it. This place is SO COOL! I've been her twice now and had a blast both times. The rooms are challenging. The staff take your coats and will lock your purses/cell phones in a locker that you hold the key to. Once that happens you get put into a room. The staff will tell you a little blurb on how to play the game (you get two clues after that) And then GO! Solve the puzzle! The concept is really cool. You and some friends are put in a situation (room) and you have to solve puzzles to beat it/get out. However, I was pretty underwhelmed with the execution at this company. We went there for my birthday and had such a number of people that our 1 group did the SECRET LAB and another group (my own) ended up doing the BOMB room. From what I heard Secret Lab was alright but BOMB was way way way too hard. Not only that, but the one box in one of the rooms that was supposed to be labelled "fingerprints" was half smeared and pretty much illegible in the poor lighting. Supposedly the easiest room has a 4% success rate for the first try. This tells me the designers have made it in such a way that you're supposed to fail and that the only way to actually beat a room is to come back again and again... (and thereby spend more money). With that in mind I can't help but feel that the staff should have warned us to not go for the BOMB room for our first experience. In addition, even if it wasn't ridiculously difficult, the puzzles we all based on the same thing, getting combinations for locked boxes. So way too hard and way too repetitive and dull... odd combination but there it is. Cool concept that is poorly executed by this business. Don't go with these guys. read more

Now that you're out of school, you find yourself sometimes doing those online "What's my IQ" quizzes. Admit it! If you have that itch to prove your wit Breakout has finally arrived in Edmonton. They have different rooms for you to break out of (mandatory number of 6 people in a group). Due to safety concerns, they do monitor you and have the door available if you simply need to catch your breath and get out. There's a constant timer telling you when your impending failure is and it is up to you and your team to crack the room. Like most social games, it's up to the individuals to put out an effort to make the most of the experience. The more immersed, the more committed you are to try to outwit the room, the more sense of danger and panic you'll feel as you're that close to getting the last clue. The staff do rub it in when you can't simply make the hall of fame (all in good fun I hope) and it's a little addicting to want to come back and try the others or at least try the new upcoming ideas they have cooking up. The current promotion is $21 for the month of October but it's regularly $25 per person. TL;DR: 45 minutes of group activity trying to break out of a room. Great option for a night out with friends Recently, a group of us went here to celebrate a birthday, something to do before going out for dinner. I had read about this business opening a few weeks earlier and made a reservation for 4 for the Le Gala room on Friday night before our dinner reservation. The Birthday girl didn't know what we were doing that evening, the rest of us did. This is the first Breakout Game in Edmonton, these venues started in Asia a few years ago and are starting to appear in Canada in various cities like Toronto and Vancouver. The goal is to solve puzzles to find clues to help you break out of your room within a certain time limit. It's hard to review this without giving away things. I will just say this. In hindsight, things were simpler than we thought. We tended to overanalyze and got caught up in things that were merely distractions. You will get two hints, watch your time and use them at appropriate points. There were three puzzles in the first room, we needed to use two of our hints to solve two of these, frustratingly we had a very simple error in one of our puzzles that roadblocked us. We didn't make it into the second room but we unanimously decided we will be coming back again to try another room. Book well in advance, the popular rooms book up quick. We will be back read more

This is a great place for a group outing! Very unique.. We had a group event and we had 3 rooms, the awakening, the secret lab and the louvre one. It was awesome! None of us passes but had a great time. Would be nice if it was licensed and could sell alcohol on weekend nights. The props were great. The staff super friendly and funny! The only thing that was bad was the bathroom.. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen in a public establishment. Filthy and urine everywhere and no toilet paper or paper towel! Yikes. Only other tip is the games are better played in groups of 4, not 6. I will be back! read more

What a cool and interesting thing to do! Me and my friend went and tried this on Saturday afternoon. It was completely fun. We were paired up with 3 strangers, so ideally go in a group of 5. Would be more fun if you knew everyone. But if it's just a couple of you it was still great too. We did Secret Lab, which is more of a beginner one they said. We found it very hard!!! It's not as easy as you think. Without giving anything away, I think I can say there are about 20 steps/clues you need to unravel to win. You only have 45 mins tho! We were all first timers, and I would say we got about 6 done, but messed up as we skipped a couple chronological steps. One tip, if you finish and don't solve the room. Don't ask what you missed!!! I did and it kind of ruined the idea of maybe going back and taking another crack at the room! They say only 4% do it first try! Another tip is to keep repeating the clues and riddles out loud so the whole group can brainstorm. A lot of them were literal. There are no pictures allowed but let me say they do a great job in decorating and setting up your room to be authentic. There was one reveal where something started to move and I was blown away!!! This is a great ideas for a date night if you are looking for something new to do as well. They have many times available and its online reservation and you pay on arrival. It was $25 per person for the hour that you are there. Also I heard there is a new one downtown, but friends said this one is the best one. read more

This place is awesome! I went in not really knowing what to expect; my lovely other half took me here for an early Birthday present. So I was a bit nervous to be honest; but once we started it was fantastic. We had to go with another group of three, so you have to be quick at getting to know strangers and work together. It does take awhile to figure out how to approach the 'puzzles' but once you get that you will do fine. We had an absolute blast and I would highly recommend it anyone. My one criticism though is that you need more time then 45 min..it just isn't long enough to get through it. read more

Lots of fun for groups, team building, staff parties etc! Be prepared for a fun, fast paced mind bender that keeps you guessing. It's not easy, it will keep you talking about it for days if not months after, and you'll be kicking yourself (at least I was) for missing some of the clues that seem obvious in hindsight. We took an office group of 8 to Breakout as part of our Christmas party. Nothing says Christmas party like a murder mystery in room 1408! We started on time, we finished on time, and it went fast. Total fail, for a number of reasons. We tried the bomb room, and biggest complaint is they provided no information up front on the difficulty level, nor made any recommendations as to what we should play. That would have helped, we were all first timers, and turns out we picked the toughest game available. We are actually a pretty bright group, a team of all engineers, very good at solving problems and puzzles. Communication though is our downfall, and it turns out that was the most critical element in the game. One of the problems is based on the game of risk, and you have to do all kinds of crazy math and make a number of assumptions, that could lead to a bunch of different answers, any of which could be the right answer, but the lack of clarity means you won't know until you get an answer and find out its wrong. As an example, even when they tell you to round numbers up, when necessary, they don't tell you if you are rounding up the casualties or survivors, so that tip is completely useless. Then you don't know if the mistake was in an assumption you made, a lack of clarity in the instructions, or if you miscounted a single unit on the board or made a mistake in just one math operation somewhere. Crazy. You only have about 45 minutes to solve something like 8-12 puzzles. We spent almost 2/3 of our time on that one puzzle, got multiple answers that were all wrong, and basically that was it. There's no way anyone who has not already played the game, probably multiple times, could win that one. And that's really my main beef with the game and the company. We went in as a work event team building exercise, and came out of it feeling like total failures because it was pretty much impossible. They won't give you the solution at the end, because they expect you to pay again to play it again. So maybe if you play the game 3 or 4 times, paying $25 per player each time, you will finally win, but that feels too much like cheating to me. 45 minutes is nowhere near enough time, maybe 4-8 hours and you could solve it, but they make the time short so they can make more money pushing as many teams through as possible. At the end I asked how often teams win and the answer was about 2% of the time. Those 2% are probably the people going in again for the 3rd time or more. Bottom line is for the amount you pay combined as a team, I would have expected a lot more. There's just no effort on their part to make it fun for the customer, they way it's set up, its all about the money, so I won't be going back. If you do go, whatever you do don't start with the bomb room unless you have a ton of experience with these games, are a genius, and amazing at communication. read more

Earlier in the year I was able to visit Vancouver and try out the escape rooms they had over there. It is a really fun way to spend 45 minutes with your friends, trying to solve riddles and figure out clues to get out of the room (or multiple rooms). Having been to ones in Vancouver a couple times and having a blast there, I was really excited when I heard a similar escape room game opening in Edmonton. However, after being amazed at how intricate and well thought-out some of the puzzles were in Vancouver, this one feels lacking in comparison and I am really disappointed by the experience at Breakout. My friends and I tried the Secret Laboratory over the weekend. Our initial impression of the room when we walked in was a rather poor home-made sort of feeling. The room was sluggishly decorated with simple props, and thus not as extensive or elaborate as the ones seen in Vancouver, which feel much more like an actual movie set. Some of the props in the room were even damaged by previous players, which kind of ruined the experience for us. The tasks and clues were also basic, uncreative, and had little to no correlation at all with the storyline or general theme of the room, whereas the ones in Vancouver made us use lasers or a combination of other innovative tools to solve the story-driven riddles. Furthermore, the end goal of the game (which is to unlock the door and escape the room) was also ruined by the fact that the door was already unlocked to begin with, and therefore we were able to exit the room at any time before we solved the remaining puzzles. Overall, if you haven't been to any kind of real-life escape rooms, this is a great place for first-timers to have a unique bonding experience with your friends. Do give it a try if you haven't yet as they are offering 20% off during their grand opening month until the end of October 2014 (works out to be $21/person). However as of writing, this place is rather expensive (at the regular rate of $25/person) for their lack in production value in comparison to others out there. Until they improve upon their room design and develop more elaborate puzzles, I will not be going back in the meantime. read more

I'm big on room escape games- it's a great way to test your friendships and think on your feet. This summer, I was lucky enough to spend a week experiencing the top tier of room escape games in Budapest (TRAP, and Claustrophilia), which is why I'm really disappointed by this experience. -Le Gala was underwhelming and sparse, and contained a total of five puzzles- if you count combination locks as a puzzle. The tasks were repetitive and unimaginative. TRAP had us playing with lasers, scales, and magnets, and this felt incredibly flat in comparison. -There was no sense of pressure- the door was unlocked so we could exit at any time, and we frequently heard noises from people waiting in the lobby. -When I finished Claustrophilia, I felt proud of what I had accomplished- we solved fifteen puzzles, and experienced some really clever tasks, and laughed our way through it. Le Gala, comparatively, wasn't much of a bonding experience. -Also, I hit my head on the rather low-lying "twist". If you're going to pile something in a corner and turn out the lights, make sure there's nothing immovable that a six-foot person will throw their head into when they stand up. I get that this place is new, and I hope they'll develop some more engaging puzzles for the room. As it stands, this is a rather expensive and disappointing experience. read more

It was a lot of fun, overall. I expected more variation in the puzzles but it really just came down to a bunch of combination locks. As well, the person working was pretty condescending when he told us, without us asking, all the ways we made mistakes and how easy it all was. It was a lot of fun until that happened, he turned it from a fun little game we didn't win to making us feel kind of angry. He apologized after when we commented that he was kind of being rude but seriously, how do you even think giving a lecture then asking people if they had fun is reasonable? Also, if you ask for a hint they don't stop the timer. Keep that in mind, and know exactly what you're going to say when they come to help. I hope they get new puzzles though, I'd go back. What'd I'd like to see is if their rooms all didn't just boil down to "Find the combinations for 7 different combination locks!" that are supervised by the comic book guy from The Simpsons. read more

Went to breakout during their beta testing with 5 of my friends. We did secret lab and honestly I liked it more than the two lab themed ones I tried in Vancouver. The rooms in Vancouver are all very small and there aren't very many wow things; I don't want to spoil anything incase people go but there's way more math in one location and the other location we finished it with 10 mins too spare (too small too easy). I will say that the decor at breakout is at 70% (it could be better) but there were a few things that I literally was like 'woahhh,,,,what!!!!!' Overall it was a really fun experience and I want to go again to try 1408 before the room gets changed out. I wish they wouldn't change it so fast!!! I don't have enough time to go try them all. And no, we didn't make it out of the lab but we were really really close! read more

Pros These three entrepreneurs have stumbled upon a great opportunity to make serious money. The game is engaging, challenging, and tons of fun. There is nothing in or around Edmonton that is even in this category of entertainment, so if the bar scene is not for you do not hesitate to book. These young guys have developed an experience that involves the detectives in everyone to give it their best shot! Absolutely worth the money. Cons needs more seating in the waiting area - who cares? This was one of the first companies my wife and I ever did. We have done everything from La Gala and 1408 (no longer there) to Mayhem Ranch, B.O.M.B., Secret Lab and The Cube. Their design is good and on par with most of the companies in Edmonton. Their story is often good however I find that their puzzles sometimes don't exactly coincide with the room you are in. As well, the difficulty level of these puzzles is quite high. My wife and I have a pretty good escape rate from most of the companies in Edmonton but we have never escaped from a room at Break Out. Best we have ever done is gotten half way through a room. We treat this company as our personal Mount Everest, once we get through a full room we have accomplished our impossible. We still find the rooms fun and interesting but are not too surprised when we fail. read more

It seems like they are booking up quite regularly but it wasn't too hard to get in at a time I found acceptable. It was a little bit expensive for only 45 minutes but I think the novelty made it worth while. I prefer SOLVING the puzzle rather than FINDING the solution, I felt our room was the latter. I do not think this was a bad thing, it just was not up my alley. I was fairly lost and frustrated in our room and thought the clues were too vague but I cannot blame them for my idiocy. I recommend going with as many people as possible to ensure you get the most out of the experience. My only actual complaint was when asked for a hint they simply provided the solution which left a bit of a bad taste as I never did understand how I was supposed to get it. Overall I definitely recommend everybody try it at least once as it is a very unique experience that will certainly challenge you and your friends. read more

A great place for those that love puzzles, But don't over think them and go with your gut. Had a fun time with my coworkers for my first Christmas party with company. The 45mins went by very fast and the 2 hints did come in handy. After the 45mins is up and you don't escape the room they do come in and show you how to get out. You will be thinking to yourself ooooo I thought of that but didn't go with it. My advice to anyone who goes, do not over think the room. This was my first escape game company I've ever been to, my first experience with this location was during a team building event. The co-workers that I went with, didn't take the game as serious as I did, so I decided come back with friends... and then again... and then again... until i did all 4 rooms they had available at the time. The 4 rooms that were available at the time were Awakening, 1408, La Gala and Secret Lab I would definitely say La Gala and Secret Lab were my two favorite rooms, I wanted to escape Secret Lab so bad that I went back even tho they told us we were at 80% completion on our first attempt. La Gala's 2nd part was just mind blowing, I honestly freaked out in 1408 and Secret lab was just full of great puzzles. I had a bad experience in Awakening and in 1408 we had absolutely no clue how to get the ball rolling. Overall Breakout gave my friends and I a great time, constantly made us wanna plan our next trip back. Based off of the first 4 rooms this review should be sitting at a 3/5 star, since I had 2 excellent experience and 2 meh experience. But recently I came back to play their new CUBE room, and I gotta say Breakout has up their game. This room was full of such cool gadgets and the puzzles were super interactive, it require everyone to pull their own weight. Upon entering this room, I was just amazed with all of the surrounding and how intense the start of game is. Ok, so my husband and I have gone to many escape rooms in Edmonton, and became addicted to them! We've tried lots of different companies and have enjoyed them all! So we decided to try Breakout. And I can honestly say I will never go back. All escape rooms are around the same price, $25 for 45 minutes which a seems crazy but we have always left feeling it was money well spent, whether we escaped or not! But not here. We did the bomb room, which has decent reviews so we got a group of friends together and went for it. Some of these friends were first timers and were really excited for a great first experience, even tho they were paying so much money. So firstly, going into the room we were told TWICE not to touch a certain object until we knew what it was for, so we asked for clarification and again were told NOT to touch it. So we didn't. Because we're good people and follow the rules. Turns out this was TERRIBLE advice from the staff because it was actually where we needed to start in order to be successful. At the 25 minute mark our bomb was detonated BECAUSE we weren't given the right information, and were told it was game over and to leave. We paid for 45 minutes (or until we escape), and we got not even 25 because of poor information that set us up for failure. So that sucked, but honestly the worst part of the experience was the staffs customer service. The minute we walked in the door we felt like they were very snotty and condescending, and continued to be that way throughout the whole half hour we spent here. Every other escape room place we've visited we have had the BEST staff that made us pumped and excited and comfortable and were very helpful. They would give us the back ground story and set us up for an exciting themed 45 minutes! We Got no real back story and these staff were actually getting short with us because we were acting exited and pumped. They were condescending and made us feel like we were stupid. The puzzles were not good, some being impossible with the information given. I can honestly say I ( and my 7 other teammates) will NOT be returning because it was not fun, our time cut short because of terrible direction and honestly the terrible customer service was so disappointing. We felt responsible for our friends sucky first time and hoped this didn't ruin any chance of them trying future escape places! This place is not up to par with other escape rooms so they shouldn't charge as much If they're giving sub par experience. The other places will also show you how the room ends when you're done, but this place won't thinking you'll come back pay them more money and try again. Yeah no. There are so many other awesome escape room places (let me name some! we loved escape city, gtfo and smarty pants!) so we will be taking our money to those places for good. So my husband and I don't get out very often. Its a lot of work to get a babysitter and so we just dont. We got invited to go to Breakout and we were so excited as we've been to one other place before (e escape) and it was a blast!! This place BLOWS!! Don't waste your money. The staff is rude and they totally lead you astray. They were no help and very snotty. The group I was with was very excited and they kept telling us to 'shhh'. They told us to NOT touch something and turns out that's the one thing we needed to touch to succeed. So after 20 minutes we got kicked out (detonated the bomb that they said was near impossible to detonate without the code) when we paid 25$ for 45 minutes. WASTE OF MONEY!!! Go somewhere fun. Breakout Edmonton is a great time and I would most definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't checked it out. I have been with the same group twice and we have attempted Le Gala and Secret Lab. That said, the owners do have some kinks to work out. Without giving anything away, it is sufficient to say the first time we went (Le Gala) the room was not reset entirely; a piece of paper was left in the room with a code on it that should not have been there. As a result, we wasted significant precious minutes (around 6) debating whether it was supposed to be there or not, and/or trying to use it in our efforts to escape, before burning one of our clues up only to discover it was not supposed to be there. Needless to say, this was kind of annoying, but lesson learned. Before starting our second attempt nearly a month later in Secret Lab, we asked the owners to ensure the room was properly reset (we explained what happened last time and one of them actually said he had heard about our group and the mishap). This time, everything seemed in place, until part way through the room when we experienced a technical malfunction (without specific details to avoid giving anything away). Altogether, from the initial technical difficulty to the time the owner had joined us in the room to fix the issue, around 8 or so minutes had easily been wasted. Of course, we made it 95% through the room and those 8 minutes may have provided us with the time we needed to complete the escape. After we finished we spoke to one of the employees who said that the technical difficulty "happens to more people than not". To this I began to wonder: if it happens to most people, why is it not fixed? Further, I began reflecting and became extremely curious why a) time was not stopped b) time was not added back on or c) we were not given some sort of deal or incentive to return, in light of the troubles we have now experienced twice. These experiences may seem insignificant, but for those who have not tried, 45 minutes goes really fast and any wasted time is extremely detrimental to success. I will go again to Breakout Edmonton, as it is a great time and the owners/staff are friendly. Like I said, just a few kinks to work out, maybe even from the business side of things that the owners could implement. read more

My husband and I were invited by some friends to join them in the Louvre and I have to say, it was a thoroughly enjoyable (albeit, at $25 per person, a slightly pricey) way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We had never been before and were walked through the basic rules before being closed in with the timer counting down. If you are claustrophobic, I can see how this might be stressful, but the door you entered through seems to always remain open just in case you need to breathe or have to use the bathroom. Be warned though, just cause you can go out the door you came in doesn't mean the clock stops counting down. All six of us overthought the first puzzle for 20 minutes, to the point of needing a hint just to figure out what to do, but we blazed through the remaining puzzles and were entering the final exit code when we ran out of time, and I have to say, it was an absolute blast racing against the clock, even when we lost. We laughed at ourselves for our reaction to the first puzzle (a sheet of paper with an equation on it), my husband thought the room would be better served for four people as there were not enough flashlights to go around, but overall, it was a great time. We are going back in a few weeks to solve the mystery of 1408 with another couple, and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it. I would enthusiastically recommend this to anyone who is a little bored with dinner and a movie for date night, enjoys puzzles, or just wants to try something new and fun. read more

I have booked for a large group many times before and Breakout East was EXTREMELY accommodating, super professional, and made sure everyone had a great time! We had an excellent time! The puzzles and team work we're very engaging and just challenging enough for first time player. But $25 for 45 mins which is a little bit expensive, however, other places provide 1 hour play time. read more
