The waiting area was inviting, spacious and interesting. There were seating areas and tables where you could play games or work with puzzles while waiting. There is also a washroom and a snack bar in this waiting area. Next to the front desk, there's another area around the corner, where they have smash rooms - a separate activity which people pay to smash and destroy things for fun. At the front desk, there is a computer with a giant screen, where each person needs to complete an electronic waiver, prior to going into the escape room...or I guess especially a smash room. There are definitely ways people could potentially get hurt in these rooms. To store your personal belongings, they have a hallway of closets with keys in the doors. You can hang your jackets and keep your bags in here, for no extra charge. Then you can lock the door and take the key with you. I preferred these closets to the tiny lockers I've seen in other escape room venues. The staff advise you not to bring any cell phones into the escape rooms. This is to prevent people from taking pictures inside of the rooms and risk giving away important clues. This would totally ruin the fun for everyone else! While we were in the lobby/waiting room, a lady gave us a brief orientation about the rules of the game. Unfortunately, her colleague was also explaining the smash rooms to a couple of ladies, at the exact same time. Because they were talking at the same time, this made it a little hard to hear the lady. I think it would have been better if the guy brought the ladies into the smash room area (around the corner)and spoke to them there. Not a huge deal, but I think there was a simple solution to minimizing the noise. Both staff were trying to share important information to their separate groups. As I listener, I was a bit stressed trying to make sure I heard everything I needed to know. A lot of the important ground rules had to do with safety. For example, we were advised not to re-wire any electronics and to not stick our fingers into electric sockets. Other information was to ensure we didn't destroy the props in the room. Some people have been rough with the props and so some fragile/broken items have been covered with red tape. We were told not to touch the items covered in red tape. Bottomline: Don't hurt yourselves and don't destroy the room. They have smash rooms for people who want to break things. After our orientation, our host (dressed in character) came to greet us in the lobby. He quickly led our group of seven, upstairs to our room, "Morning Never Comes." Once inside, we were given a short introduction on our mission. We only had 45 minutes to complete our mission. The clock started after our host finished giving us the background story to our room. Our host handed us a two way walkie talkie, to use when we needed any hints or clarifications. We had a total of three hints (originally two but I earned one extra by checking in on Facebook) and an unlimited amount of clarifications. The difference between a hint and clarification seemed a bit confusing to me. We didn't obsess about the differences. When we had a question, we just went ahead and asked our host. The room wasn't too large. We had ample space for seven people to be scrambling around without bumping into one another. We were also very careful not to break any props. It's pretty obvious when something is glued into place. The key is not to apply too much force to anything. If it doesn't move easily, it's probably not meant to move! Also, if you do anything totally unnecessary or risky, the host will inform you via the walkie talkie. After a lot of teamwork, quick thinking, three hints, and I can't even remember how many clarifications, we needed up solving our riddle! With a whole nine minutes to spare! Whoohoo! We were extremely proud! Our host took our picture as the newest group of Smartpantz! It was a great feeling and an awesome way to spend a Friday evening! read more

Overall it was a good place. I liked the room I was in as it had so much character. The actor at the beginning was good too. We were only 2 steps away from solving the puzzle before time ran out. The people at the front were nice and welcoming. They have a birthday special where the birthday individual plays for free with 4 paying members. They also had a groupon deal when we went in. There is parking in front of the business which is so handy. I think it's 1 or 2 hours for free. The only thing I don't like is that if you don't have the set amount of people then you can't play. I wanted to come here with a group one afternoon. As we were short one they wouldn't let us play. It's tough to arrange a large group of people and get them to commit. It would be nice to have rooms in which people who come with less than 4 can be accommodated. read more

The twist to this escape room as compared to the others is the integration of a live actor that guides your play. The actor sets the story, and gives you clues as the character he is playing. We really enjoyed this feature. We had one particular actor that was really good and never broke character even while we were laughing our butts off as he set the storyline. As for the rooms themselves, the design is done very well. The puzzles are not too hard and fairly straightforward. The only downside is that they are single rooms (so far, anyway), although I guess the positive side to that is that passing a single room actually seems doable in 45 minutes. Smartypantz has banished the traditional ring a doorbell and someone comes to give you a clue style, and they do not have a timer in the rooms. A few things I don't like about this place: 1) They will not allow you back in to the room if you leave it for whatever reason. Pretty sure punishing people for having to go to the bathroom goes against some sort of human rights legislation. 2) You have to prepay online with your booking. - sometimes shit happens (ie) a friend flakes out, you get called in to work, etc) Not a fan of that, if I have to swallow the costs myself. 3) No clock in the room to keep track of your play time. I personally like to know how much time I have, and space the two hints out accordingly. The price is the same as all the others - $25 plus tax per person. Good. This was the first escape room for a large portion of our group and we completed The Morning Never Comes. Not a scary room which was good as some of our group was worried about that. We did complete it in record time and it felt like there could have been more puzzles, but the goal of the rooms is more about being immersed in a story rather than completing it in record time. There is no time clock in the room and no one actually enters your room to give you the hint. Instead we were equipped with a walkie talkie. An actor introduced us to the room and was our contact who gave clarification. I liked that if we thought something was broken we could easily ask for clarification at any point and it didn't count as a hint. The room set up was very cool and well put together. The waiting room/foyer was very simple and had some games to play while waiting including a big version of Jenga. There was parking in the area, it's behind Grant Mac in a little bit of an industrial area. Look for the blue building and the entrance is on the East side. It overall was a fun family bonding experience and we all enjoyed it. Next time we are eager to try a more challenging room. Update: we completed the hardest room they have Spies and Lies and it was super good! Difficult but solvable. We completed it with only 2 minutes to spare! Don't forget to get your picture taken in the rooms after your done! A great keep sake and memory reminder of the fun had. I can't believe I haven't reviewed SmartyPantz yet. I absolutely love this place! Somehow when I first started doing escape rooms I never came across this place - but if you do then please check out their rooms! Firstly, the staff here are absolutely amazing. Really personable, kind people who want you to have a great experience in the rooms. Since they actually end up playing a role as a character for these rooms they do an absolutely amazing job for getting you immersed into the experience! At first I was a bit hesitant to do a room with an actor because I had the impression that they would be with you the whole time but no, don't worry - they will give you a bit at the beginning and end and that (aside from hint giving via walkie talkie) is the extent to which you will be with them. The first room I did here was thirst for murder and I am so glad that was the first one. The actor who brought us into the room gave me Split vibes and I was absolutely LIVING for it - it was amazing and hilarious and entertaining and terrifying all at the same time. The room itself was more difficult than I expected but I believe this was due to the fact that they have a unique style in their puzzles. I would say that their rooms in general sway more difficult but don't let that deter you from trying them out! The second room I did here was Morning Never Comes which I found to be easier than the first but not by much. It was 'shorter' then expected but certainly just as event-filled. Overall I loved the experience here and I'm still working up the courage to do their hardest room. If you're experienced then this is a great place to go! Also, I have tried their smash room which is really such a great way to spend $10 - absolutely worth it. You get to play your own music, you're in the room alone and you can do whatever you want and take all your anger out on some old plates and cups. So fun! This place was really accommodating for my birthday party when I had to change numbers. We did the "Dreamscape" room- and succeeded! It was a lot of fun. The fun starts in the waiting room with lots of puzzles and games. The staff here are polite and really helpful. They provide lockers for you to safely store your things while you're in the escape room as well. Apparently there are actors for each room that play into the story line. Ours was a little on the cheesy side for me, but she was great and never broke character. The room itself was well designed, and I was actually very impressed. If I had one piece of feedback, it would be to amp up the experience of actually feeling trapped in the room. With noise from other groups carrying down the hallway, and our actress coming in and out I found it cut out a bit of the fun for me. Other than that, we had a great time. The puzzles are appropriate to the room difficulty level, so make sure you check out the room description before you book. The hosts are my favourite part! Good location, just behind Grant Mac so there is an abundance of free parking in the evenings. There's a nice big reception area when you walk in and its appointed by some nice mid-century furniture (someone must've had fun hitting up the thrift shops!). There are a bunch of little games for people to keep themselves entertained as they wait for their party. As opposed to other escape room places, these guys have entire closets for your group to keep their stuff in; particularly useful now that people are wearing their heavy winter coats. Smartypantz appoints an in character host (who was pretty entertaining) and communicates to you via two way radio. Some people may not like using the radio, but I thought it was quite a clever way to get clues and effective. The room was well done, better than most other escape rooms in the city; I.e., it actually felt like a 'real room'. The puzzles were fairly intuitive and logical, which is a key factor for me to feel immersed in the realism. The 'special effects' of the puzzles was also well done; similar to that at GTFO. Good staff, good rooms, will definitely go back again. The reception area was a bit chilly and the rooms themselves were a but toasty, so layer up. read more

We recently tried a room at Smartypantz with a group of 7. We did a "Thirst for Murder" which was excellent. I won't get into the room too much to avoid giving it away, but the room was laid out very well. We ended up escaping with about 10 minutes to go. One thing that does set this escape room apart is that your "host" is in character. Gives it a little bit extra for your experience. As with all escape rooms they will give you two hints, but they will also confirm combinations, etc for you (in case the lock is being finicky). I'm docking a star because the one thing I disliked was the payment process. They charge you the full amount at the time of booking. This creates two problems: (1) issues of you end up with fewer people going and (2) then the person booking needs to collect from everyone else. I get charging a deposit in case of no show but how about letting people pay individually? In summary - a great escape room experience, but because of the pain in the butt payment process, I would recommend a different escape room as there are many excellent ones in Edmonton! read more

This is the type of place that is super hard to write a review on - for one you don't really want to give away anything and also I kind of feel like a bit of compare an contrast would really change mine. But, I haven't been to any other escape room places and can't compare and contrast. I found the place to be really clean (always a plus in my books) and the staff to be quite friendly. While we didn't think there would be any parking, there turned out to be quite a bit in front of the building. In terms of the actual escape 'experience', I'm a little uncertain if I enjoyed it or not. Especially when you put a monetary value on it (though, to be clear, I won a gift card and went with my friends for free). I found that because everything was in one room with no clear "do a, then b, then c" type of order, everybody just ran wild and did their own thing. To some extent, that would be the fault of the group. But I think with these escape games there needs to be a bit of an onus on the company to make things logical. In the end, there wasn't much cooperation within my group, and I think that was at least partially the fault of the room not allowing it or providing the resources for everybody to be able to be involved. I also found that just about everything we discovered or did was more by accident than any sort of puzzle solving. I don't know. I would definitely do one of these again, but I'm not exactly dying to. (also, yes, we did beat the room) read more

I'd never been to an escape room, but I went for a friend's birthday last night. The staff are TOP NOTCH patient and accommodating. Friendly and fun. We went to the Dreams room. The actor was a young chick who was fabulous and funny aaaaand kinda creepy. I had NO idea what to expect and even looked online for some tips. Nada. The room was really cool. Interestingly decorated. Once you get in- you just have to get into it. I was glad I went with out experienced escapers. We almost used one of our tips to ask "um.... what do we do?" We figured it combinations to open locks on boxes that moved to other clues. We had about 11 people and it was a little much. Too many people moving around and getting into things, I thought. Some of the puzzles I would never have figured out if I didn't have some smarter people with me lol We totally failed it, but the host came back in and went over everything with us. Nothing she revealed was too mind blowing. We would have gotten it had we had more time - but the first while was spent wondering what the heck to do. The puzzles had players engage with all aspects of the room's environment. Also, there weren't too many red herrings thrown in, which I found made the experience feel all the more complete. Set: 5/5 The set and props were amazing! They blew every other escape room I've been to right out of the water! The rooms were a perfect blend of atmosphere and functionality. Almost all of the set pieces and props had a very realistic feeling of weight and strength to them. Story: 4/5 The story was presented by one of SmartyPantz's costumed-up employees. I found it surprisingly engaging, and it set up our experience nicely! As we progressed through the room we used a walkie-talkie to ask for hints, and the room's employee did a good job of answering our questions while staying in character on the other end of the line. Our family does one escape room a month and have been touring the different providers here in Edmonton. Today was our very first time at SmartyPantz and we left as happy and excited as we did after our very first room, the one that got us passionate about the hobby. The staff were friendly and the waiting room was spacious, comfortable, and offered plenty of puzzles and games. Refreshments were sold on site, which is always nice. Full-sized closets were available to store our stuff (not just lockers), which during the winter months will be a great feature. In terms of the room, we were doing "Thirst for Murder" and were really looking forward to it, as this would be the first time we'd be trying a 'movie set quality' room, and it did not disappoint. Some places we've been have had virtually no immersion factor, some have had very good immersion. Nothing so far has rivaled SmartyPantz. Not only did the room's decoration live up to the advertising, offering plenty of setting elements to engage with, but the opportunities to interact with our live Host elevated the feeling that we were "living the room" to a whole other level. The Host's magnificently improvised performance not only created a sense of place, but helped evolve the story we were involved in. It might sound weird (considering the theme of this room), but we all felt like we had developed a relationship with Beetle, even though he did end up needing to have Sad Time with us later (yup, we got made into pies for The Master, but had an amazing amount of fun doing it). The puzzles of the room are well designed, calling upon the skills of searchers and solvers equally, and each one had a sound logic to them within the story. Everything we needed was right there built into the room (a triumph of design); we just fell short this day. At this point I feel safe saying that SmartyPantz is the best escape room experience currently available in Edmonton, so: * If you have never done one before start with them. * If you are an escape room fan in the Edmonton area, get to them ASAP. * If you are a true escape room fan, make certain to take a trip to our fair city and pay them a visit. We went last night and had a pretty good time! The acting was good and the props were okay. I was expecting there to be a bit more gore based on the room description. I do feel like the room was underrated as a "moderate" level because we found it to be very challenging, Towards the end, we used our second clue but were still unable to make sense of it so we probably wasted close to 30 minutes on one lock. I had asked for the answer flat out and wish I was provided with it so we could have moved on. Perhaps that's not a standard for breakout rooms? Lobby is awesome and provides lots things to keep you busy if you are waiting around for the group to show up. I found it to be too far from transit so may not be able to go back but I realize that's not a common complaint. Overall, worth checking out. read more

When we came to smarty pantz it was our 4th escape room company in 24hrs. We had discovered escape rooms and went on a binge. We got into the lobby and there were many places to sit and wait while our other members arrived, we played "guess who" and other games provided while we waited. We finally checked in and waited for our host to come and take us to "morning never comes", our physic medium host came and took us up to the room and explained all the details, and gave us a back story to the room acting as a medium. The room is amazing, very well decorated and really immerses you in the theme. We started and right away didn't feel like we knew how to start, we found the first clue and didn't know how to apply it. That was our fault we had over look something but we had stressed about it so much that it was affecting our experience. We went through the room and had many more frustrating moments to the point we almost just sat down and stopped playing, Partially think this was due to doing too many rooms in 24hrs, we were honestly burnt out but we love these escape rooms!!! We did end up completing the room with 32 seconds left, it was bitter sweet for sure, we felt as though we had our butts kicked. I took time to think about the experience and if you had asked me outside the doors I probably would have said I wouldn't be back, weird considering we had "won". But I thought about it after and smarty pantz checked all the boxes. -Unbelievably designed rooms and effects -Great customer service -Good puzzles -Unique experience The way the clues are presented and what they try to get you to do makes you think in a different way compared to other companies IMO, I appreciate that now, not in the moment, but I do now. This was the first time at an escape room for myself and everyone in the group attending for my 30th birthday. I had booked the 'Thirst for Murder' room at 830 and even though had told my other group members to show up a bit early, we still had 2 running late. The man at the desk (never caught his real name unfortunately, he was our host Beetle for the evening) was very friendly and accommodating with the situation. I had read online that being late will go into your time in the room, giving you less time for the experience. 'Beetle' (so sorry I didnt get his name!) informed us there was no group booked after us and he would let us wait a bit until they could arrive. After waiting a bit he gave us the quick info about what to expect and the rules, then went to get into character (we didn't know it would be him at this time, were just told a host would come down) which is when our other 2 members showed up. We were provided a closet to lock our belongings in. Beetle came out in full character, we could hear him coming before we even saw him and it really set the mood. The acting was great. The room was fun, we were able to solve the first "puzzle" almost immediately (albeit 1 lock was being a bit finicky to open even though we were sure about the code). This scenario has 2 rooms, we were able to make it into the 2nd fairly quick, and then began the solving. Since we had 6 people and had never done this before, we were kind of all over the place. We found some clues (and things that weren't), overthought things, didn't think through some things enough. We eventually called for a time check (there is no timer in the room and they provide you a walkie talkie to ask for time or hints, they do not enter the room and stay in character on the radio). We were down to 17 minutes so we asked for a hint with a lock box. Beetle provided some info and stayed with us incase we needed a bit more (which we did), and we were able to solve that. Since we were getting low on time we asked for our 2nd clue with another lock. The lock already had a clue but we were oblivious to it until Beetle gave us the hint. With that, we were able to escape with about 5 minutes left. Beetle took our picture in the room, then was nice enough to offer to show us the 3 other themed rooms, plus the VR room; which he turned on and let everyone in our group try the VR helmet on. All in all, it was a great and fun experience. Our host was awesome and super friendly. We would love to go back. Everyone in the group had a great time. I came here with a group of 6 for my girlfriends Birthday. We chose Smartypantz because of its pricing and variety of rooms available. There was ample parking nearby when we went (Week day, evening). The staff were friendly. We were provided with a closet that we were able to lock to store our belongings, extremely convenient considering we went in the dead of winter. When it was time to go to our room, an extremely enthusiastic employee, in character, brought us to our room. The room we decided to attempt was Morning Never Comes as it was rated casual difficulty (none of my group had done an escape room before) and had a mild scare factor. The room was very well set up and extremely interactive. My group had an excellent time and we felt very immersed in the story. When we were unsure of a clue we were able to communicate with our guide via walkie talkie. He stayed in character and was excellent at directing our questions in such a way that we answered the questions. We will definitely be returning! read more

SmartyPantz is a-okay! They get top marks for room design, which truly immerses you in the experience. Their staff is excellent and the room themes are super fun. My only criticism is that the puzzles (at least in the rooms I tried) rely heavily on combination locks which, if you've done a lot of escape rooms, gets a little tiresome. If you're totally new to escape rooms, definitely give SmartyPantz a shot--you'll have a blast. read more

We did Thirst for Murder and it was probably the best escape room I've done in Edmonton. And I've done A LOT of escape rooms. The host should've gotten an academy award for his acting. it was just phenomenal. I will absolutely be going back! read more
