I've been taking classes from Renee since she was teaching in the basement of my gym. I'm so lucky to have stumbled upon her. Their classes make you feel so good, are fun, and give you just as good of a work out as the boring 30 minute elyptical machine. All of the teachers are amazing and you really can't go wrong with any of their classes. I take zumba and kickboxing to mix it up. It really keeps me in shape. Soon I think they'll be adding p90x which will be awesome. With my job as a vintage clothing dealer I make less money in the summer which can be hard on paying for classes but I picked up their incredible group-on deal and am all set for summer. All you have to do is walk in. Do it. Thank you guys, Alia For newbees, Don't be intimidated if you don't know any steps or have never done any classes. Everyone in class is so sweet and looking to have fun too.Just sweat it out. Most of us don't always get the footwork down and I laugh at myself in almost every class. This new place brings a fabulous resource to the neighborhood- old fashioned awesome dance and fitness classes- the whole place is devoted to the dancefloors. The Zumba classes are super high energy workouts, Renee and Stephanie's classes ALWAYS pack a punch and leave me feeling totally energized. Radena's jazz and cardio jams are the kind of routine-based dance class that is SO hard to find around Williamsburg, and that I've totally been missing. I LOVED her choreography and being all sassy bringing the attitude to it- felt amazing. In short, this space is terrific- beautiful, crafted with love (Renee is a hero), and with a high caliber team of gifted instructors. I can't say enough good things about it. I LOVE Breakin Boundaries and am forever grateful to them for bringing so much good stuff into my life. Joy through dancing (I don't care how silly I look! Dance is AMAZING and restorative), strength through conditioning, connection through a kind community. Renee has created and worked to have something magic, something special and important in her studio. I came across BB while I was booking workout classes through ClassPass, and signing up for a Zumba class at the studio was one of the best decisions I've made! The classes are fun, challenging and inspiring. The instructors are real and friendly. I always leave each class feeling tired, sweaty and rejuvenated! I especially love starting my weekend mornings with a class at BB. No better way for me to start my day. It's such a gem of a studio, only a few blocks from my house. But the instructors are what keep me coming back, and I love that each class includes ladies of all shapes and sizes, loving and challenging themselves! read more

This place is awesome! I discovered it on Groupon and went for 10 classes in the summer. I enjoyed the fitness routine so much, I decided in September to sign up for an annual membership. Now it's part of my regular fitness routine. Almost every week I try to go at least three times a week for sessions. The zumba and fiyah fit really keep my cardio going and the fun instructors keep me motivated to try new moves and challenge my body. The vixen workout helps bring out my inner diva that I didn't even know I had. And the pilates continue to help me build upper body strength. I love the energy of all the instructors, it makes working out (which is usually a task for me) FUN! read more

While the idea of Breakin boundaries is great, it falls way below anyone's expectations for a fitness studio and I would not recommend it. First, it's advertised as a dance/fitness studio but it seems like the regular employees only care about Zumba. The Zumba classes are repetitive, the music rarely changes and the instructors I've had aren't all that. The class offerings are few and far between and always changing. Other continuing members told me about other great classes like hip hop but I haven't seen it offered since I started. Also the owner Rene is really rude. She was not trying to give me the time of day when I was a brand new confused member. The worst part about it is I'm pretty overweight and insecure and I felt like the employees were judging me and not accommodating to my fitness level. I probably would not have gone back if my friend and I didn't buy a few classes (single classes are about $18 which is a little expensive to me but there are packages that make it cheaper in the long run.) Overall I think there are a lot better places for people to take Zumba and fitness classes in bk. The customer service just wants to please and serve their existing members which is not a good quality in a business and especially not in a fitness studio. Maybe they should stop being so judgmental and start being NICE and welcoming employees and instructors. read more

I took Rita's Hip Hop Aerobics on Wednesday night and loved it! The combo was so fun, and while you didn't need any dance experience to take the class, it was definitely a hip hop combo- truly the best of both worlds. I also took Renee's Pilates class- for my first Pilates class it was quite a workout! But Renee guided us through and broke down the moves to make every exercise possible. read more

Stephanie's Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday Zumba class is one of the highlights of my week and definitely the highlight of me exercise week. I'm a runner and don't do much in the way of group classes because I get bored really easily. That is not the case with this Zumba class, it is absurdly fun and holy crap I get a good workout. Not to mention Renee is fantastic and really responsive and I love supporting a local business. The prices are wonderful for New York, really truly a bargain for what you get. I have a monthly unlimited and each month I strive to make sure I use it as much as possible because it makes me so happy. Please try the classes, they are a amazing. read more

I have to say that when I first joined this gym, it was such a great experience. However, when it was time to renew my membership, I was unable to due to my finances. I was extremely disappointed with how the owner handled my exit. Not only was I charged even after cancelling my membership, it took almost two months for her to give me my refund. She claimed that she was unable to answer emails and that she was the only person in charge of issuing refunds/account management. Even though I had been in contact prior to this with several people who work there through the gym's contact email, no one thought to address my issue. My advice to the owner is, to make sure if she isn't available to handle issues like this, please have someone on your staff that is a second in command to help your customers. There is no excuse for poor customer service regardless of the size of your business. read more

I wish I could give Breakin Boundaries more than 5 stars. I am one of those people who really doesn't love exercise and if it's not fun I cannot do it (I despise running on the treadmill or doing sit-ups). I bought a Groupon back in February and went for the first time, and I have been in love and going to as many classes per week as I can ever since! When I walked in the first time, Russell at the front desk made me feel so welcome and like I belonged. He is warm, fun, and holds the desk down with style and professionalism. After my first class with Carolyn, I immediately signed up to be a yearly member. No matter how terrible I feel physically or mentally when I walk in the studio, Carolyn's radiating positivity, energy, and encouragement for self-love Always helps me leave in an amazing mood. Her classes are beyond fun with killer music, moves, and make me leave dripping sweat and exhausted but in the best way. Whenever Stephanie teaches, I make sure I am there because her mix of kickboxing, strength, and cardio get my heart beating faster than anything else I have tried - but it's somehow still so much fun. Stefani's Zumba classes are also amazing. Breakin Boundaries basically has many different styles of dance fitness classes that involve Zumba moves but the creativity of the instructors takes them beyond any other Zumba classes I have taken in other studios. The studio also offers tons of other classes that I haven't even been able to try yet because I am so busy going to my faves. And the owner Renee is the dazzling lady that brings it all together. She knows every one who walks in the door and is constantly trying new things so you can never get in a rut. If you want a real boost of energy, take one of the many classes offered at this fairly new dance studio in Williamsburg: Zumba, Belly Dancing, Ballet, Hip-Hop Yoga, Jazz Jam, etc... Renee is the owner and she knows dancing. Her classes used to be in Greenpoint. End of August, she opened a studio in Williamsburg. Renee is a great teacher and you will never forget you have taken a class with her. Xavier, Stephanie, Radena and Yasemin are fantastic too... The studio also offers a lot of dancing for CHILDREN (Small World) & Mommy & Toddler Yoga, or ABS classes or even IM=X Pilates classes... The floor is wood and you can dance bare feet or with your gym shoes. All the teachers are very qualified and loving + your first class is free. This is an amazing dance studio. I've been attending classes for the past two years. The owner, Renee, is amazing. She's incredibly talented, inspiring and motivating. I first started with trying Zumba classes. They are so much fun and will ruin you from taking classes anywhere else. As someone who just moved out of state, I truly miss Breakin' Boundaries' classes. It is very odd to find/take a class that triggers all of your muscles, makes you sweat and laugh, and makes you want to come back again. That can be said about Renee and her staff at Breakin' Boundaries. I love the personal relationships the staff establish whether it is your first or tenth class, there is a sense of community in the studio that inspires you to keep on dancing and accomplish personal training goals. I wish they were in California, and would prefer them to be out here....SO New Yorkers please take advantage of what you have in your backyard. I know when I visit, I will be there! read more

I discovered Breakin Boundaries about 6 years ago when I was interested in trying out the Zumba craze, needless to say I am now hooked. I had some extra baby weight, and no stamina. Renee is a super hero! I have never met a more dedicated instructor. I lost over 15 lbs that first summer. The classes are amazing, and all of the instructors are incredible. I love the variety of classes that they offer, and whether you are a beginner or a pro you will fit right into a class without feeling silly. I also must say that Burlesque with Davon Chance is the TRUTH. He made this Mom of two feel like a sex Goddess. I absolutely love Breakin Boundaries! P.S. Never would have found this amazing place if it wasn't for Groupon! Purchased an awesome deal and just could not pass it up! I'd never done Zumba before and was always hesitant since I have no coordination and can not dance for the life of me! But it was amazing! It took a little getting used too, but I felt the burn and when the hour was up I was wanting more!! I own many different work out videos but never am motivated to do them at home by myself. The interaction and motivation Renee gives keeps you going and makes you push yourself. Renee the owner is fabulous! Her Zumba class was fun, encouraging, and amazing. After class she stayed to talk and answer questions. Having it been my first time there I had a few things to ask. She answered and was so sweet and awesome! Can't wait to use my ten classes trying out new things! After that is up, it is safe to say I will be getting a monthly membership! I definitely recommend! i would never recommend attending this facility or EVER doing business with the owner Renee. I can see from other reviewers i'm not alone with regards to her rudeness and money grabbing business practices. I personally rented out some space by the hour from Breakin Boundaries. I signed a 3 month lease for roughly 3 hours of rentals each week plus paid a deposit. I paid my rent on time each month and Renee still has not returned my deposit money. its been years!! No damage occurred during my rentals (in fact, i only used the studio for about 2 weeks- i found a better place elsewhere-but i still paid rent to the owner as per the lease agreement) This is entirely unacceptable and disappointing. I tried contacting her tons of times-even offered for her to pay me back w/ rental time. Breakin Boundaries still has my money. In the beginning, I was very happy to support another female running a fitness business, but its obvious that when the owner avoids your calls, tells you she doesn't have your money but will "get it to you when I can", admits to owing other people money also, this business doesn't deserve any support. I would never pre pay for any sort of classes here-what if you are injured or have circumstances that require you to move? -your money is gone. As is mine. thanks a lot. read more

After moving into the neighborhood two years ago, I was skeptical of finding a zumba class that paralleled the ones I took at my YMCA in Park Slope. Little did I know that Breakin' Boundaries would become the best workout experience I've ever experienced. First off, owner and instructor Renee and her staff are one of the most down to earth people. There is none of the ridiculous "hipster" motto or ethics that most businesses in the area have. Second, whenever I go in for my usual zumba classes, I don't sense any competition among members or references to what's "hip" to work out to. I feel like anyone who shows up is simply there to shake the day off and have fun! And we do! This is what exercising should be about. Renee's dance background is evident in her classes. Not only are you following her instructions but you want to emulate and gain her innate rhythm and movement. Stephanie, is a Zumba badass, who'll make you sweat hard and give your all. I come out feeling like Rocky when the session is over. I'm sure all the other instructors there are just as wonderful--I will check out other classes when my work schedule becomes less crazy. If you want/need a local escape to release all mental and physical funk, Breakin Boundaries is the way to go! read more

- the clases have ONE speaker for the entire class so zumba and other classes are great but if you are at the end of the room with the speaker your eardrums get blown out. I have definitely had my ears ringing after a class. Also, one of the instructors, Stephanie, would not do the moves along with the class, she kept undoing and re-doing her ponytail during the entire class. Also, playlists are commonplace. Make a playlist for your classes instead of losing momentum by going over to your ipod and finding each song. - the owner, is incredibly rude and is not helpful with any administrative or payment issues. She becomes irate actually and when I had an issue with her card payment process she was so rude I decided to cancel my year long membership. (more on that below) - CAUTION: when you cancel your membership she charges you OVER $200! Although it is in the contract I didn't foresee any reason why I would cancel my membership since I was getting married and needed to get into shape. However, Renee's attitude was so aggressive and rude I felt uncomfortable with her as my instructor. I asked why this exit fee was so high considering there are no lockers, washing facilities, equipment or even a water cooler. She said it was because they are a local business... ??? ------------ my horrible personal experience with Breaking Boundaries------------ I signed up for their FLASH SALE. It was a $48 year membership flash sale for NEW one year memberships. I decided that since I was already going to BB on a Groupon and I needed to get into shape for my upcoming nuptials. When I got my bill I asked why I did not get the flash discount the owner, Renee said "oh, that is only for people who have never heard of us." I thought this made no sense whatsoever since I got an email from them informing me of this sale. If this was for people who had never heard of them, why would I get this sale offer via an email from them? Wouldn't I have to know who they were to attend the flash sale? Despite my gut feeling that that was really sketchy I continued to go. Renee notified me that her POS was unable to verify my direct deposit account as it is less money if you pay via direct deposit. I set that up and my payments were not going through. I certainly had sufficient funds. In order to PROVE this without giving her my statement details I had my bank CALL her personally where she HUNG UP on my banks customer service and accused me of faking the call. She said she has never had a bank call her on behalf of a customer and she was incredulous at my actions. I was even more confused as I was trying to solve this problem. She continued to be irate and charge me $35 extra every time my card would not go through. Finally, my husband and I called her POS system which was not helpful. She had the correct routing number and checking account. She told me repeatedly that I did NOT give her the correct information however, after checking her files she did. When I asked her how she suddenly had the right information she didn't answer me and responded with the amount I owed her, including the $35 late fee. I was trying to argue that there was nothing wrong with my account and it was unfair that I was being charged $35 extra dollars every month. Renee became very frustrated and stated that she had never had this problem before. This may be true but she was practically screaming at me over the phone. I felt so horrible that I decided to have my husband call her on my behalf where she accused him of lying by saying "you're not her husband and I refuse to talk to you. do not call me again." This is my personal experience with this business and it was incredibly disappointing since I was excited to support a local business. 2 stars since you can go and pay class to class and get a decent workout. read more

Easily one of the worst classes I've ever been to. I came to NY for the weekend from Boston to visit some friends and decided to drop-in to the Saturday "Zumba" class with my friend. I'll preface this by saying I currently have the best Zumba teacher ever in Boston (and classes are only $10!!) so my standards were already high. However, high standards or not, this class was awful. Literally, one song of actual dancing (the LAST song of the class). The rest of the time was spent doing planks, "shadow boxing," jumping jacks, calf raises, mountain climbers, high knees, etc... Sound familiar? It should.. Because that's what you expect from a bootcamp class, NOT a Zumba class. The playlist was an unimpressive array of old Zumba songs (maybe this is how they can call it "Zumba?"), the moves were repetitive, the instructor's energy was nothing to write home about, the ceiling was leaking water, & the instructor NEVER corrected form. Not once. Most of the individuals in the room were squatting incorrectly, clearly putting their knees at risk for injury. I would never recommend this class and I really hope this was an isolated incident rather than reflective of the entire studio. I wish I could get my $18 back especially since this class was falsely advertised. For that price, I could have gotten a much higher caliber workout. read more

Before I met Breakin Boundaries, I was so bored with my gym I preferred drinking wine and eating my kids cheeze-its at night rather than go to the boring, dirty gym I belonged to. 2 kids later, I was ready to invest time in my body. You can't complain about baby fat after 2 years. Enter, Breakin Boundaries. One class with Stephanie and I was hooked. I was so out of shape, I could not move my mid-waistless section. Now, about 8 months later, I will battle Beyonce! Well not really, but I feel great, I got some moves back and I love my body. It's not 100% where I want it yet, but all in time. Everyone asked how I coped with my mom's passing this year: my answer: working out at Breakin Boundaries is like going to a club without the liquor. It's good energy, keeps me busy and I love it. Not all classes are as intense as Stephanie, but Davon has me twerking and that is crazy! Renee turns us into cowgirls and did I mention Belly Dance? Love this place and love the energy they gave me back! Ask my husband if I can miss Zumba? Not unless he wants to die! read more

I love, love, love this place!! I've so far tried Power Yoga and Pliates and both classes were excellent. I definitely plan on coming back to try other classes because I think it's a fabulous place to get your workout on!! The owner Renee is a real doll and all of the instuctors seem equally awesome.
