My sister and I wanted to bond and burn some calories (upcoming wedding). We were greeted as soon as we entered and booked the class with ease. We signed up for the Vixen class but unfortunately the instructor was stuck in traffic. Carolyn, another instructor offered to take our class. She normally teaches Zumba and we did that class. It was fun and easy to follow. The music was diverse- from techo/dance, Reggaeton to Beyoncé and Chance the Rapper. Although she just finished teaching a class, she was vivacious and encouraging to all of the students in our class. I thought this action was great because the class could have been canceled or rescheduled but I appreciated Carolyn stepping in and instructing. Next time I am in Brooklyn and in the mood to shake off some calories and sweat, I will be stop in at the studio. T Note: It's a small studio with two rooms. The closet isn't the largest, so pack lightly. If you are coming from the L train, it's about 10 minute walk but walking is good! Cash and credit cards are accepted. read more

Awesome High Enegry and Alot of Sweat!!!!!I Me and a friend went here for a Zumba class and it almost killed us!!! It was a class sponsored by Yelp and I am totally glad I made it. We had the workout of our lives and I actually enjoyed it. Even if I felt like I was going to vomit and pass out all at the same time...It was GRRREAT!!! When you look for a workout class this it what you are lookig for. Greenpoint is a horrible location to get to for me but the class was so awesome I may firgure a way!!! Took Rita's hip hop dance class Wednesday and it's great for the novice dancer or people who just want to add some flavor to their normal workout routine. I would definitely go back. Only giving this place 3 stars though, because I walked in and no one said anything to me. Got the vibe that the people here aren't particularly friendly, especially if you're not a member or a regular. So sad to say this place has taken a turn for the worst. I used to be a regular and loved their high intensity kick boxing and Zumba classes. But all their good instructors have left, and their new classes are a joke. They no longer offer real exercise classes--it's all spiritual crap that I don't even break a sweat in. I kid you not, one of the classes described as "high intensity" on their website is just an hour of yelling positive affirmations at yourself in the mirror with hand movements. If you want a real workout, go somewhere else. read more

I LOVE the classes at Breakin Boundaries and look forward to going. I have taken 10 classes so far, and I am hooked. I definitely saw a positive change in my body only after a few classes. Tired and bored with the gym atmosphere, I was in search of a different type of workout/exercise and this is exactly what I was hoping to find. I was always intimidated by Zumba, but found that you pick up the moves only after a few classes. I am a bit uncoordinated, clumsy and never took a dance class in my life...if I can do it, you can too. It's such a great workout as well as fun. The instructors and owner are extremely friendly and motivating. You feel as if you are in a comfortable, positive environment and there are a variety of classes at convenient times. I am a natural winter hibernator and haven't worked out during the cold weather months in years until now. I recommend you give it a try. read more

Boundaries makes me deaf! I love zumba and always had great teachers in different zumba classes throughout the city but nothing prepared me for the side effects of the zumba concert with Boundaries. The music was so loud my ears were ringing and I was at the end of the room too. When I asked to owner if she can turn down the music she said" NO! this is zumba, that's the way it is." She was very unpleasant and just would not hear it. It seems to me that Boundaries is trying to make up for poor ZUMBA choreography and boring routines with loud music. read more

Breaking Boundaries offers really great dance classes in a beautiful space. I take Zumba, Hip Hop, Ballet and Tone Up at Breaking Boundaries. As a trained dancer, I can assure you that the instructors are all very talented. I HIGHLY recommend Davon for donation based ballet and hip hop on Wednesdays. Hell of a time, incredible choreography and great personality. His Thursday class which is burlesque is also incredible. I am starting to explore the studio's Zumba classes more but I do like Renee's class on Mondays. Also, the studio has amazing food - vegan, vegetarian, delicious juices, smoothies, gluten-free pasta and much more. Definitely check it out! read more

I've only been to two classes so far, but I'm already smitten. Shayla was a great instructor and the classes kicked my ass. I appreciated the fact that for each routine she would give us alternatives if we couldn't complete the moves entirely, and though she encourages you to push yourself you don't feel guilty for not being capable to do something in its entirety (as I have in the past with other classes elsewhere). The space is very welcoming and I almost didn't want to leave! My only complaint? An update to the website would be great, and I wish there were clear descriptions of each class (level of intensity, type of workout, etc). If there is I haven't been able to find it! Also, I don't understand why the G in "breaking" is absent, and it bothers me more than it should, but maybe that just means I'm not hip enough... read more

I have taken four classes at Breakin Boundaries so far. I discovered the studio through a Groupon deal, and have been so thankful to have given this place a second look despite my usual Groupon dubiousness. The Zumba classes are stellar--I particularly recommend Renee and Anneclaire (though I think she is gone for a few months). I feel stronger and more in shape after only three Zumba classes! I also took one of Davon's Hip Hop Aerobic classes, and I was really impressed with the structure of the class. It's equal parts toning, aerobics and choreography. Never a dull moment! read more

My dance company Art Of Legohn rehearses here on a weekly basis and we have prepared for big events at this location. I would definitely recommend this place to take class and to rehearse.. I had a great time at Breaking Boundaries, I visited this location due to a Yelp fit club event last month and I had no idea what to expect... . The staff were very friendly and allowed me to preview a P90X class while I waited for Zumba to begin. The P90X class was a challenging full body workout. The instructor was great; she would let you know ahead of time which workouts we were going to do and gave you alternates based off of your fitness level. My Legs were sore after this class but it hurt so good I def recommend you guys attend this class Tuesdays at 7:15 After P90X I proceeded to the Zumba class and man were they full of energy the music selection was on point and so were the moves. You can tell the instructors really enjoy what they do and want everyone to have fun as they burn some calories... my only feedback is that they could try to break down or warn the crowd a bit better of the moves that are coming up or how to do the routine. Unless you have taken classes with them before and learned the routine it could take a sec for you to catch on to the dances as I saw ppl struggling. But again I have not taken a class with the individual instructors so it may be different. Overall I had a great time and I highly recommend them...If i did not live in the BX i would be there all the time especially for the P90x class..Good job guys! read more

I was so excited when I stumbled upon a Groupon coupon, which boasted 10 classes for 35$ or 20 classes for 65$. They had zumba and it is super convenient being in my neighborhood so I went all in and bought the 20 classes. All of the staff are really nice and personable and make you feel comfortable right away. The same people usually take the class, so you get to meet people, which is always nice. Now about the classes. WOW!! By far the best zumba class I have ever taken, and I've taken quite a few. I can only speak for the class with Steph, but she really makes you sweat your butt off. I want to also try the other classes and once I do, I'm sure I'll have good things to say about those too. I have been attending classes at Breakin Boundaries for a few years now after originally finding them on Groupon and starting this year I have become a full time member. Finding the time and motivation to work out has always been a struggle for me. I have tried other gyms and classes in the past that I couldn't stick with but for once I have found something that is fun and I look forward to doing every week! The owner, Renee is a fitness goddess and makes sure that all classes are fun, extra sweaty and judgement free. It is a very welcoming community that really wants to help you succeed in your fitness goals. Renee's Zumba and Pilates classes are my regular favorites but I hope to explore more soon. I would recommend to anyone who wants to add a little excitement to their work out with out sacrificing any of the intensity. I always end up sore the next day but it's always worth it. I LOVE this place. I've been going for a year and a half and it's everything I've been looking for! The best part about Breakin Boundaries is that they offer so many different classes, you're bound to find something that's perfect for you! I have personally fallen in love with their kickboxing classes, so I go to those most weeks, but when I'm busy on the days they're offered, they always have another class every night that I'm perfectly happy substituting kickboxing with! A few personal favorites are IMX Pilates, Stephanie or Renee's Zumba class, Breakin Barre, and Dancehall. A lot of my friends have tried this studio and preferred other classes, too. Renee does an amazing job of filling the schedule with a wide variety of classes so you never get bored. If you're looking for a new way to get moving, definitely give this studio a try! This studio completely changed my life. 100% fact, no doubt about it. Butt-kicking classes, incredible instructors, fantastic atmosphere. Everyone there is fun and motivated and ready to have a great time. I've been attending Breakin Boundaries for over a year and a half, and within that time my attitude and motivation for fitness has completely changed. I actually look forward to working out! I started just taking Zumba, it is amazing for 'zoning out' and forgetting what can be stressful NY life, and you sweat... a lot! It's a great work out. Renee, Stephanie and Barbara's classes are all excellent, it just depends what vibe you feel like that day. Every instructor that Renee brings into the centre is excellent. I love taking the XMP Pilates class, I have really noticed a difference in my body and core strength. I'm obsessed with this place! I bought a pack of classes in hopes of doing some Zumba classes to get in shape, and now I'm obsessed. First of all, it's great because they generally have 2 class options for adults every night of the week, so there are a lot of options to try and fit a class into an unpredictable schedule. Second of all, the teachers are just amazing. Renee is a FORCE! It's worth the cost of a class just to watch her dance in front. I also just tried BodyRoll with Viva and came home with a permanent smile on my face and a sexy dance to show my husband. ;-) With dance moves with names like the salsa and slap, the yes/no, the Beyonce, and freedom...I mean....amazing. Breakin Boundaries is like a gift from the heavens! As a former dancer and gymnast, I cannot get enough of this studio and cannot believe I only discovered it 2 weeks ago. After living in Greenpoint for 3 years, I was praying for a gym with decent dance and aerobic classes, and BB is the sure answer to all of my prayers. Renee, the owner, is a fabulous lady who hand-picks all of her instructors, each of whom are incredible in their own right. I've only had classes with Davon, Viva, and Steph so far, but I can say, with confidence, that any instructor will teach a great class and be a lot of fun. With classes like BODYroll, Hip-Hop Aerobics, Zumba, and Burlesque(!!), how can you go wrong?? I've left every class glistening with sweat and feeling like a brand new person.
