This review is for the restaurant only. I came here with a group of five for brunch on a Sunday. The place was pretty packed with lots of families and numerous children running amok in their Sunday best. We were lucky enough to get seated in a side room where I'm assuming they put the overflow when it gets busy. It was a nice quiet spot, with only one other occupied table nearby, which I was very thankful for after a night of drinking. The building is in a nice location with views of the water. Service was excellent; very attentive staff. The food was definitely good and prices reasonable, but I didn't see anything extraordinary or exciting on the menu. Hotel: The best place to stay in Spring Lake. You can't beat the location, directly on the beach. And the hotel has a wonderful pool area with poolside service (drinks and food). This review is for the restaurant at Breakers. My primary gripe was the super unprofessional staff. Wowza. It was like a bunch of kids running around gossiping with no supervision. Out of nostalgia came for breakfast knowing that the days of the Breakers Sunday grand brunch were over. What I didn't expect was the Terrible quality food on the standard menu. From the stale baked goods to twice-cooked side dishes they clearly don't care about what they set in front of you. Apparently the restaurant is surviving off of hotel guests who enjoy the convenience since there are no other redeeming merits than the location. While the cocktail hour and reception areas were not setup to host 150 people comfortably, they were modern and well kept. The restaurant and piano lounge have a very old school look and feel, but overall, we were pleased with everything and made for a great date night at the beach. We started in the piano lounge and there is nothing special about the bar or cocktails, but we definitely enjoyed chilling in the bar before our reservation and listening to someone play and sing that had an excellent voice. Service in the restaurant was excellent, and we were both pleased with two different fish dishes that we got off the "Chef's Choice" part of the menu. The menu scared me somewhat as there are a lot of items on the menu, so if I had one suggestion it would be to trim the menu significantly. Another restaurant update - split decision last night, wife liked her veal e' deste quite a lot, along with the side of saute'ed mushrooms, and her salad was simple but fresh. My hot antipasti (got the hot antipasti for two as my dinner, was not terribly hungry) was a disappointment. The clams oreganata seemed to be missing the clams and were not very flavorful. Shrimp scampi not garlicky, and were overcooked. Stuffed mushrooms had nondescript mush in them. Only the eggplant rolantina was good - tasty, done just right, nice ricotta stuffing inside, good thickness and texture for the eggplant. Oh, and the potatoes that came with wife's veal were miserable. Wine list is well-varied and reasonable. I can't help but think they've had some turn-over in their kitchen lately. read more

A lot of attention to compliance with COVID rules and regulations. Very clean and neat. When I had a general concern, Daria, with the support of Ceasar could not do enough to make everything right and to our satisfaction!!!!! She was so helpful. The location and views right on the ocean were magnificent. The veranda and pool were lovely. Our room was spacious and luxurious with a fireplace, couch, and a very large bathroom equipped with a large jacuzzi. Loved going to the beach and exploring Spring Lake with its beautiful homes. This review is just for the restaurant. My husband and I had dinner here recently and left with full bellies and smiles. The service was very friendly and expedient and the food was delicious. It's a bit pricey but the portions were very generous. The salads were fresh and tasty, the lobster bisque was full of large lobster chunks, the crab cakes were the real deal, the marinara sauce was really, really good, and the desserts (tiramisu and strawberries and whipped cream layered with an almond cookie) were lip-smacking. I also liked the atmosphere - it a very nice dining room and we were lucky to have live piano music. I guess the decot is a bit dated but that's part of its charm. So I'm not one to ever actually proceed to go on yelp and write a review, but I am personally Disgusted of the actions of the owners son of The Breakers. I am currently in the process of picking a venue for my wedding. I have been looking online and found this beautiful hotel, it's cheap and the food looks good enough to pass on to my guests so I think I found the one for me. My mind changed after a disagreement occurred online with the owners son who proceeded to repeat homo-sexual slurs and insults at me. That being said I was going to brush it off until I found out that is "his restaurant" that he manages. My fiancé and I have friends and family that would be attending the wedding and would hate for a child with mixed beliefs be the reason why our wedding is nothing but perfect. I suggest that anyone who feels the same way as me and doesn't enjoy being harassed and bigotry in their lives steers clear of this establishment. My husband and I spent a weekend at the Breakers in what I think was the bridal suite. I remember the largest Jacuzzi I had ever seen, and that was a treat! The Breakers is directly across the street from the Spring Lake beach, and the view we had was gorgeous. My mom made a res for two nights on the phone & provided her credit card info, and then they call us a few days before the trip to say that because they never received a check, our reservation is canceled. Transformative! I used to vacation at the Breakers On The Shore for the big things, but I find myself returning for the smaller pleasures. Yes, there's the undeniable allure of the majestic sweep of this historic, Victorian-style hotel, with grand ocean views from oversized windows and the inviting, wrap-around veranda to survey the topography and manicured landscapes, which can all be quite exhilerating. The rooms my wife and I stayed in were comfortable with whisper-quiet air-conditioning, beds firm with clean crisp sheets, the decor eclectic. Room service was prompt and attentive, accommodating our smallest requests, from extra luggage racks and towels to in-room phone calls informing us that our table is ready for dinner. The food is good, professionally prepared cuisine, sometimes exceptionally so. You can get a hint of just how good if you allow your olfactory sense to guide you when near the ballroom or dining area, as I did. At various times, I got nose-seduced by an aromatic reduction sauce simmering on the stove, or the fragrance of roasted vegetables drizzled in a demi-glace or the scent of a sumptuous bouillabaisse. If you happen to have just returned from a day at the beach dressed in swimsuit, T-shirt, flip-flops and reek of Hawaiian Tropic Tanning Oil, do not for one moment believe that you'll be able to gain entry into a catered affair under the flimsy pretense that you're in the wedding party. That won't cut it, even more so when you're carrying an empty bag of Cheetos. Just don't ask me how I know this. Best of all is the nearly unsurpassable convenience that the hotel offers. There's the eye-catching and functional outdoor pool area with tables, lounge chairs and service kiosk. While eating breakfast and seated near a window overlooking the pool, I saw an older woman cautiously and unsteadily enter the water. I thought she'd be taking a dip to cool off. What she actually did was swim lap after lap, slicing through the water like an eel. She hoisted herself up at the pool's edge fifteen minutes later looking strong, sure-footed and agile. It was as if she swam in the magical waters of Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth. If pool-side recreation doesn't float your boat then walk to the beach just across the street from the hotel. The ocean and relatively uncluttered beach gently coaxed me into participating in nature's bounty and beauty, from body surfing to burying my feet in the warm sand. At the end of our long, busy day, we relaxed on the veranda, sipping our favorite beverage and marinating in a bright moonlight that illuminated the night sky and turbulent ocean. A slow intoxication came over us, probably less from our post-prandial libation than from the negatively-charged ions permeating the brackish ocean air filling our lungs and our entire being with a primal energy reminiscent of the animal satisfaction felt after a successful hunt. All our senses seem intensified, heightened. The next morning in front of the hotel, we espied a purple butterfly emerge from its chrysalis and rest on a nearby flower. Days earlier it was a leaf-crawling caterpillar. I thought this was the perfect metaphor for our stay here. The Breakers can be genuinely transformative and restorative. But just maybe it wasn't from the big things as much as the little things that made it so. read more

I stayed at this hotel for a business trip based on the recommendations of one of my colleagues. The price for this time of year was about $135/night before taxes. Originally I wanted to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn (which was also closer to the client) but was convinced to stay here because it was right next to the ocean. This is probably the only thing that made staying at this hotel worthwhile. From what I hear, this hotel charges a lot during the peak season, so I would definitely consider pricing if this is an issue. You can't beat the location, but let me provide you with the reasons why I would not come back. First off, the hotel does not have a website for booking (you have to actually call them - get with the 21st century) and has a 2 week cancellation policy on reservations here. I've never heard of a 2 week cancellation policy, especially during the off season. I was hesitant at first but since I was going to stay here for work anyways, I figured there would be very little possibility of me cancelling my trip. They person who took my reservation said they would be sending me the confirm the same day but I didn't receive it the next and had to call them to remind them. That was just the first sign of their unprofessionalism. After arriving at the hotel, the outside look pretty nice and right across the street was the ocean. But that's about it for the highlights of the hotel. The hotel is outdated and the rooms feel like some cheap motel. The hotel does not have a gym or even a parking lot, so you would have to park on the street. Parking during the off season isn't a problem, but what kind of hotel doesn't have parking? Then we move on the the complaints of the hotel. The hotel is expensive for the type of food and services that it offers. They have free take-away coffee near the dining area but won't allow you to take the coffee with you if you eat at the restaurant. Then for goodness sakes, put the coffee somewhere else!! I ordered an omelette the first morning for breakfast and it was not fully cooked and was running egg juices. They charge you for every ingredient that you put in the omelette, and for about $16-17 including a cup of OJ, is totally not worth eating here. I came back a couple more times for breakfast during the week and the service is slow and unprofessional. One time a waiter comes to put food on my table but moves the jam holder right in front of me so that I would have knocked it down if I started to eat. That was very odd and what type of person would put an item right in front of you?? On the last day, my colleague and I came to eat breakfast again and since there was no one there to seat us, we decided to seat ourselves. We wait there for 10 minutes and the lady hostess comes by saying, "Did you want to eat?" Of course we did. Why would we get up in the morning, sit at the breakfast table, and not expect to order food? Dumb stupidity for her asking and not just offering us the menus to order. But what sealed the deal was while during eating, I listened to the hostess making fun of one of the waiters. She was mocking him by mumbling and stuttering, and this was in the dining area where other people could hear. This hostess needs to be fired and someone with some professionalism needs to be hired. I will probably never come back to this hotel, and definitely won't be for my own personal trips. I will stick with the big hotel chains where customer service is #1. Finally, after checking out they say they'll email me the hotel receipt for travel reimbursement purposes. I did not get it for several days and had to email them to remind them. Horrible service. Great location--nice old Victorian hotel right on the water. Service was spotty--front desk was nice but restaurant hostess not so much. My room was nice, though not luxrious. They do seem to have issues with credit cards--they don't like them for your deposit and warn against ATM cards as well. Strange and inconvenient. We were VERY disappointed that the lovely veranda was torn up both days we were there. This was no small thing, as it is one of the main features of the hotel--it is the spot for sitting with a cocktail and looking at the ocean. Instead, we had construction noise. I am sorry to say that due to the managements heartless adherence to "policy" we never were able to experience a night at the breakers... After submitting a check for $360 months in advance ( they don't take credit cards) my friend suffered a kidney stone and a night in ER the day before we were supposed to go. She called trying to cancel at 6 am just as she retained from the hospital. I called later in the day promising to bring doctor notes, whatever it took to get some compensation. I suggested they might comp us a night at some point when the hotel was not busy... No way!!!! I can't help but feel very disappointed. Beautiful place right in the ocean in the amazing town of Spring Lake. We didn't stay here but had a nice Friday lunch inside--really nice sandwiches, egg dishes and leinenkugels. And then on Saturday spent about 3 hours out on the deck. Their tomato and mozzarella with delicious pesto sauce is just perfect as well as the jumbo shrimp cocktail--great with a nice glass of wine and /or some more of those leinenkugels. Ate lunch and ordered the Caesar Salad and Margarita pizza. They brought my Caesar Salad without the bread. We ordered 2 Margarita pizzas. Neither one had any basil on them. Also the decor looks very old including the carpet that must be at least 30 years old. The views are very nice and the room is lit up with large windows overlooking the ocean. The view is spectacular. The front desk staff is very accommodating and patient. The facilities are very clean and maintained grounds give a comfortable feel. However, it ends just about there. The food is good but not exquisite. The service for the event we attended, breakfast two days, and dinner were all very slow and seemed to get progressively more forgetful every meal we ate. The tepid oatmeal matched the nearly warm shower we had with the exception of the one I got up at 4am to get before hot water supply seemed to dwindle. They are proud about their 20+ years operating and fine establishment. Rightfully so as far as upkeep of the same finishings. The dated neo-classical meets 80's elegance meets seashore is a bit tacky. The curtains in the ballroom and some carpeting must go! It wasn't until leaving that I found our event rate was $325/night. For the quality of facility, dealing with frequent booming parties in the evenings and night, and the spotty service - I would rather stay farther away. They have great staff, it seems they need to examine efficient use of them. read more

I had the pleasure of staying at the Breakers Hotel for the weekend. What a wonderful staff! Absolutely every staff member I spoke with was warm, wonderful and welcoming -- from the front desk to the valet. Every request was attended to with professionalism and courtesy. I realized when I got home that I had left a small item in my room. Marissa at the Breakers let me know they had it and were mailing it to me free of charge even though I was halfway across the country. That is great customer service! As far as my room, the bed was extremely comfortable and I appreciated the small refrigerator and jacuzzi tub as well. The room was very clean and the view of the shore was absolutely gorgeous, as the Breakers is right across the street from the beach. You can stay in any number of hotels on the Jersey Shore, but I promise you will not find a better or friendlier staff than the folks at the Breakers. read more

My brother got married here in May 2008. Even though it rained on his wedding day, the hotel was very accommodating and the ceremony inside was just as beautiful as it would have been on the deck. The food is excellent, however whenever we go there for a holiday, whether it be Thanksgiving or Easter, the service is not that good. The waitress tried to be attentive. But she seemed very overwhelmed. The busboy hardly ever came by to take the plates. Servers were reaching across people's faces to put things down on the table. To go boxes were distributed to the guests rather than having the servers put the food in the box. This wouldn't be a problem if the entrée weren't $30. When the price gets to be that high, one expects more for service. You will not find that level of service here. Had early dinner here yesterday with my family. My wife had the scallops and shrimps over past, which was good but on the buttery side, I had the fish special which was ok and my son had the veal special ( both specials were lemon sauce and capers which was ok also. The potatoes that they served were very good. The overall ambiance is one of an old Victorian hotel with the inescapable odor which is negated by the spectacular views of the ocean.
