Breadsmith is a beautiful little artisan bakery located in the Northcross Shopping Center, a couple of doors down from Barnes& Noble on the corner of 10th and Nolana Ave. I love the welcoming decor and sign at the entrance. When I walked in, I felt I was taken back to an old world bakery. There were shelves lined with a variety artisan breads, both savory and sweet. They had French bread, baguettes, sourdough, country buttertop, farmer's wheat, rustic Italian, rye, and, of course, croissants, rolls, brioche, and more. Then there are the sweets... coffee cakes in multiple flavors, various dessert breads like cranberry, granola breads, muffins, scones, tartlets, conchas, several kinds if cookies, danishes, brownies, ... If you can eat gluten and sugar, this is your place! I finally decided on a pineapple mini coffee cake. I was pleasantly surprised at how buttery and delicious it was. It was well baked, a perfect crumble topping, and the filling was great. The prices are quite competitive considering the quality. So, so, so much better than what you get at most grocery stores or coffee shops. I don't need to live too close to a bakery this good, but it's close enough to my place I will definitely return when I get a hankering for some quality bread or pastries. I went there this morning and bought two loaves of sweet breads. When I got home, they were rock hard and dry. When I called asked them how old the loaves were he couldn't tell me and said the older loaves are put in front to sell then told me he couldn't get from the back. So that was 30 dollars down the drain and I will never go to the bread smith again. read more

Delicious bread. I really enjoyed it. The granola bread and others are really good and the olive oil.

My wife bought a pumpkin chocolate chip loaf at their convention center location. She was very excited to serve it at a church meeting. Then she got home and tasted it and it was super dry. She did not take it to church because she thought it was so bad. I guess we just wasted money. Won't be buying from them again. read more

Great little bakery!!! Nice selection of breads and sweets that rotates daily. The menu is posted inside and includes bread, muffins, rolls, hot cross buns, cinnamon rolls, dessert breads, brownies, cookies, scones, etc. Everything I have tried has been delicious and the staff has always been very helpful. The prices are reasonable. Today we tried: Cranberry/orange and apricot scones: Perfect examples of scones. Just the right texture and sweetness. There were pieces of fruit in every bite. Very nice. Sourdough rolls: Great taste with a perfectly crusty exterior and tender middle. Oatmeal/raisin cookie: Nice taste. Crispy around the edges and soft in the middle. Go early for the best selection!!! Bread is tasty and fresh. Choose from French, rye, wheat, white, etc. For dessert you can buy coffee cakes which are the best, caramel buns, cookies, muffins and dessert breads like cranberry orange, banana walnut, pumpkin, pumpkin chocolate chip, pumpkin cranberry, blueberry lemon and more. Prices are a little steep but the quality is exceptional. Money worth spending. My only complaint is their communication of their hours of operation. For example, during Easter break it said on the door that they will be closed on Easter. However, they were not open when I went by Friday and Saturday. Turns out they closed early. Also, their doors have no closing hours. Luckily it's on the way home and so I see if its open after work. read more

You would think when you're charging $11 for a loaf of bread adding .99 to cut it is ridiculous.

I was recommended to this place by one of my employees. She mentioned it was "the best bread in town". I had walked to the local copy shop and this place caught my eye. I walked over and was greeted by a very pleasant employee. She mentioned that they use organic, fresh and local ingredients as much as possible. The selection of bread was great. I ended up choosing their more popular loaf which was orange cranberry. I was a little surprised, after having the cutting and boxing offered to me, that I was informed of an extra fee. Brownie was horrible hard as rock . I dont understand why so popular. Its expensive for the poor quality of food. The layout is nice very clean store. But it seems like nothing is fresh or nice and fluffy. They jus have big loafs of bread just sitting there for u to buy . But at the same time there just getting hard. I hate hard baked goods. Awesome little bakery!!!! I stopped by today after reading reviews here on yelp and must I say, I was not disappointed. I had been searching for a wholesome bakery in town for a while and now I think I finally found it. To begin, the customer service was top notch. My wife and I were politely greeted and were given the full run down on types of breads, pastries, desserts and even doggy treats. The guy behind the counter was very knowledgeable and helped us out with our selections. We ended up getting a sour dough loaf, a coffee cake and a treat for our puppy. The bread quality is amazing! Our sour dough bread tasted fresh out of the oven. The coffee cake was delicious and our puppy loved his bread doggy treat. This is where I will be buying my bread from now on and highly recommend this bakery if your looking for a healthier alternative to store bought breads. The basil multigrain bread is the best. It has become my go to bread. It taste great alone so it makes for wonderful sandwiches on my panini press. They also sell bread for doggies which makes me appreciate this place even more. read more

Cute bakery. wide selection of freshly baked goodies. Tried their panettone and caramel pecan bun. What I loved about this place, they have personal size panettone!, no one likes to eat this bread with plenty of little surprises in them, so I often pass on the huge ones, but what a lovely sight to see a mini one, just enough for me...probably for 2. The caramel pecan bun was also good. Both pastries chosen this day were a hit, staff and owners are very nice and helpful. i Dont know why they have a weekly menu on the web that says they have certain breads on certain days. Three times I have tried to get Garlic, onion Parmasean bread which their own ad says they make on Wed and Sat. They act like they have never heard of it. I have tried this bakery at least three times and every time that I've bought pastries, they have bee stale or hard, not to mention pricey. They also can be rather standoffish and rude. I hate to pull the race card but I felt that the reason is that I'm Mexican. Their bread is decent but doesn't last long in pantry. Needless to say I have stayed away. read more

It's true that decent breads can sometimes be found at places such as Costco and Sprouts. However, fresh bread from a dedicated bake shop just tends to make for a better end product. Being able to purchase the bread unsliced is a plus as well. This particular bakery is actually quite impressive for the valley. I haven't been disappointed yet. I usually opt for a loaf of the sourdough to pair with unsalted Kerry Gold Irish butter along side a seafood dinner :). I have had many other enjoyable breads and pastries there as well, such as the brioche style buns, focaccia's, babka, etc. Although this is a minor gripe, I will mention it anyways. They used to offer samples, and abruptly ended this sometime in the last year. I asked about this and they said that too many people were just coming in and eating the samples and not purchasing anything. I have to admit that I am hard pressed to understand this rationale/logic. When selling such a high margin product, they shouldn't be afraid of losing out on a few breadcrumbs. They should aim to convert as many walk-ins to repeat customers as they can. Sometimes I wonder if it is a reflection of the mentality of the business owner, or their perception of the common behavior that is locale specific to the greater McAllen area. read more

Although Breadsmith does offer a good product. Their breads and desserts are tasty they are not reliable when it comes to filling orders. I placed an order for Christmas eve and when I went to pick it up I was told they did not bake it. They didn't even bother to call me and tell me they didn't fill the order. And when I complained that they were not reliable and it was too late in the day to go someplace else they response was "you can't expect us to be perfect." If you want to go in and get something tasty that's fine. But if you want to place an order for a special occasion don't go to breadsmiths! read more
