BEWARE: they sell yesterday loafs as "fresh" When they opened, merchandise was fresh, and prices commensurate with the bread quality. I would always stop by in the morning to get a fresh loaf of sour bread. Beginning August, they bake all types of bread (except baguettes) a day prior, and keep them overnight to sell as "fresh" in the morning. Any true connoisseur of fresh bread would tell you how drastically the bread from the oven differs from "fresh yesterday". In my home country, stores were penalized for not disposing or not discounting "yesterday" loafs and selling them as "fresh". Basically, they are no longer a "fresh" bakery, but just like Whole Food general bakery department, which is much cheaper (a loaf of sour bread in Whole Foods is about $4-7, vs. $7-10 at Bread Furst). When I brought this to the store manager's attention, he insisted that yesterday bread can still be named "fresh". I guess they are just ignorant as with the new large condo complex across the street they would sell just anything. read more

SoHo in VanNess DC area. First visit - best scone in DC. Excellent coffee beautiful selection of pastry, cakes and assorted breakfast items and lunch food. Beautiful breads. Friendly staff. Type of place and prices one would expect to find in SoHo. Much needed in an area of dense population good incomes and few places to go on a Saturday for coffee and treats. Hopefully the neighborhood will support this place. read more

Unless they lower their currently obscene prices, I doubt they will last. $1.75 for a 3 inch cookie is ridiculous. The quality is fine, but not so much so to justify the pricing. Firehook is nearby in Cleveland Park, and reasonable. read more

I love this place! Great addition to the neighborhood. Airy, pretty decor but not a lot of seating space. Great for grabbing fresh pastries or coffee (recommend the monkey bread and chocolate croissants). Reason for 4 stars is because of the confusing line and lack of selection after 11am on weekends. read more

How do they make food so good? Been there several times and have never been disappointed. Price but worth it. People who work there are pleasant and serve you well for how crowded it is. Highly recommend. read more

One particularly rude employee ruined my morning. I am a regular at BF, I usually go 3-4 times a week. I have noticed that the line can be very long but they have changed their order/checkout process a lot to try to remedy the long wait time. This morning a employee was incredibly rude to me bc I was following the wrong process (they have a new one now). She passive aggressively talked about me to another employee right in front of me and a few other customers (we all could clearly hear what she was saying about me bc she was talking to someone about me while ringing me up). When I tried to confront her passive aggressive comments by killing it with kindness (I tried to apologize for not knowing the right process), she ignored me and told the other employee, "this isn't your fault we have very clear signs, she should have known" (referring to me) I apologized again and she said "you can pay now" and I said have a nice day and she said nothing. Needless to say I will no longer refer them for group orders at my company, or be getting my bread, pastry or coffee from here until they have better management/customer service. I think they may just have one mean/rude employee based on the other reviews I have read. It's unfortunate because it was my go-to but I just don't want to support a business that doesn't seem to care about, not just customer service, but simply treating others with some respect or kindness. read more

An amazing bakery in Cleveland Park. The bakery specializes in bread, with a delicious assortment each day. But it also provides some sweet treats, such as scones, muffins, and chocolate croissants, and a small assortment of outstanding pies and cakes. A lunch treat starts at about 11 AM, with a selection of healthy salads, often with an international flavor, with interesting combinations of roast vegetables, greens, and many other ingredients. On each day there is also usually a soup and two main dishes. This is my favorite go-to bakery for interesting additions to lunch or dinner with guests. And, I have to admit, that this bakery offers a take-out macaroni & cheese that will rival any you've had elsewhere. A great quick lunch. read more

I am so lucky that this place is just a 5-minute walk from my apartment. They make the best bread in DC, and the place itself exudes warmth - it's a real neighborhood bakery. I don't think I've ever been disappointed by anything I've tasted here- from their baguettes to croissants to messy egg sandwiches to homemade hot sauce to salads to coffee, their offerings are fresh and delicious. There is sometimes a line on the weekend, but it moves quickly. It's obvious that a lot of thoughtfulness and love have gone into the space and into the food... going here always brightens my day. read more

I live right across the street from this place - so I go often; however, there is much to be desired from both the service and the food. Although you are usually safe with a scone and a cup of plain coffee, a lot of the other baked items are hit or miss. I appreciate that you can find a good selection of artisanal sodas, breads, and cheeses, but a lot of the dishes feel like good or special ingredients just thrown together. The barista service is poor and if you are a latte or cappuccino lover, you may not be impressed depending on your barista. Once again - quality ingredients but poor follow through. Finally, I don't mind "crowded" or "small" but every time I go it seems that it is the staff's first time taking an order, and quite simply, no one knows where to stand when placing an order. The bakery has tried to solve the problem with signs but never sticks to a system. All in all, you can order something delicious, but it is always a mixed bag here. read more

Yes, it can be slightly chaotic at peak times, but the staff are fantastic -- warm, welcoming & great at what they do -- and you cannot find better or more authentic breads & pastries anywhere in the city. Slowest and most disorganized bakery I've ever had the misfortune of visiting. It's expensive, the bread isn't great, there was a hair in my frittata, and the food is mediocre. Seating is limited and the layout out of the bakery makes it very difficult to maneuver yourself from counter to cashier to seating. Gave this place a few chances but will definitely be sticking to Little Red Fox, which, despite some similar complaints, at least has food that's worth the inconvenience. read more

Excellent addition to the area and very delicious food, but the staff was unfriendly both times I went (weekday and Saturday). I waited to go a few weeks after it opened, but more than one staff person was rude and snippy. It's a new place and customers have questions. Staff is also not very helpful on recommendations. I will return because the quality of the food was very good, but I really wish they'd improve in this area. read more

Three tries, three strikes. It's so disappointing that they haven't been able to get their act together. The Van Ness neighborhood needs good options. Each visit it takes about 15 mins for a plain cup of joe. Also, they have been out of nearly every item, even during peak hours. They need to be better prepared. I have seen an average of 3 customers requesting refunds every time. Thankfully, I have never gone in a rush. I'm sure they have already lost business from the folks that they made late for work. Even last Saturday, they were out of croissants, bagels and all but one breakfast option by 9:30am. I opted to walk across the street to Calvert Woodley for my baked goods....probably what I will continue to do. read more

That Bread Furst only has 3 1/2 stars on yelp is a crime against God and man. Went there yesterday for the first time and was completely blown away by the quality and authenticity of the baked goods. Canale (as good as Paris), blood orange doughnut (making doughnuts worthwhile for those who do not care about them), bread (OMG - it is not burned, it has soul). I love this place....BUT. I will never order the frittata because they always put it up on the counter where everyone orders. People's mouths are just a few inches from it! How much saliva gets on that thing? I want to order it -- I love eggs and I love the food at Breadfurst -- but I can't bring myself to do it. Were it set aside somewhere...different story. read more

this place is sweet but its awfully depressing enjoying my food with the hum of their equipment in the background. should really be playing low classical music (or whatever mark wants) in the background at all times, especially in afternoons when the place is not as packed, what should feel quaint and lovely can be a bit depressing and lonely when there's no music to match the food and decor read more

Ordered a scone and wasn't offered any butter or jam. Went back up and told it would cost extra. Tacky on top of not being offered in the first place. And jam didn't go with the scone. I can get a whole lot better at Teaism. And the seating is an absolute disaster. They want people to sit and talk (no computers), but have about 2 tables, and use up way too much space for selling things. Really need to redo the interior design/seating arrangements. Just noticed they added outside seating, but that's not ideal in the middle of a Washington summer. Love the idea, but don't think I'll be a frequent visitor. read more

With all the hype surrounding this place, I am sad to report that I left hungry and beyond disappointed. It just wasn't good. My brisket sandwhich was inedible. So dry I couldnt swallow it without a huge gulp of water. The rice salad with brussel sprouts looked amazing, but being that it was served not hot or cold, it ended up just being weird. I really think it needed to be warm. My companions chicken sandwhich was equally as dry. She was gulping down more water than me. We quit after a few bites and went for Thai. Sweets and savories are equally delicious. I love their sandwiches, bagels, cakes, salads, cookies, coffee.... There is lots of hustle and bustle and everyone is working hard and replenishing items as they are sold out. I'm surprised by some of the reviews. Yes, its expensive, but welcome to NW DC. Yes, the bread is "over" baked, it didn't come out of a subway convection oven, real heat gives food color. Yes, space is tight, this is not Starbucks, this is not your third space, it's a small business, order, eat, and go home. read more

Parking is in the back (use the alley) and the parking lot is free clean and uncluttered. Try to eat the breads within 4 hours of the buy time to insure maximum freshness and taste. Made up sandwiches are first class as are the many pastries. Coffee is always fresh and perfect with a butter croissant. For a quick lunch try a sandwich like a Jambon Beurre with Dijon mustard, and gruyere cheese. For vegetarians, there is usually a grilled veg special with Mozzarella cheese - and the main veg varies by the day and season. Any version of their BBQ pork is a winner. In summer, there are several outdoor tables and chair combination in front. Service is fast and expert. It is clean and bright outside and inside. Ask about specials for the day. Really look at everything in the cases before you order. There are many superior food choices here. read more

This place is not cheap, but pretty much everything else is phenomenal. Their baked goods are of the highest quality, service is friendly and efficient, and the organization of the space, with a view of the oven and the bakers at work, creates a nice atmosphere. Sis and I were looking for somewhere to get something quick for breakfast and found this place using the yelp.com app. Cute little cafe style tables line the long narrow interior with glass separating the bakers kneading and preparing goodies. The choice was rather difficult but I settled on a cherry-pistachio scone and a cup of Macchiato which I later found out was actually an espresso which was my fault for not reading the menu correctly. But never mind, after a lot of creamer and some sweetner it was all good. And that scone, wow, it was one of the best scones I had ever eaten! In fact my sister said the same thing. The only reason it didn't get a five star is that they weren't all that friendly. Otherwise, I could put that aside and the next time I visit DC area I'll seek out this little gem! read more

As usual, Mark Fusternberg did it again. He has the best bread in town: crusty, deep flavors and better aromas. This place opened a few days ago next to the car wash on Connecticut and Albemarle. I expect that the flow will improve with more experience. It is a little pricey so be ready to pay for it. read more

I would give 5 stars for the bread and other baked goods. I would give 1 star for the ordering method and 3 stars for the staff. Normally the fact the place is so disorganized would have bothered me, but the quality of the food far outweighs those concerns. I have been in dc for 12 years and have been waiting for a place like this to open. I had no idea it existed until yesterday. SO excited to go back and try more baked goods. read more

Just tried this bakery cafe for the first time today and was very happy overall. The croissant (plain and pain au chocolate) were both very good (flaky buttery, balanced salt, and the chocolate was deep, rich and not burnt). The messy egg biscuit with bacon was also excellent and the baguette we got for the road looks divine. I took off one star for the lattes - definitely not great. we will be back again, but we will skip the coffee next time. read more
