Don't go here! I went via a mani/pedi through Groupon and was appalled at the condition of this "salon." Definitely not equipped for nails at all, I sat in a chair and the rolled over a bucket to wash my fee in. I then had to turn to bend to the side in order to get my manicure done. I had a noon appointment on Thursday The staff was not very friendly and were having constant conversation in Portuguese the entire time I was there, yelling back and forth. Me and the two other patrons in the salon felt uncomfortable. There were exposed wires, loose extension cords, construction lights hanging from the wall, and cleaning supplies exposed and piled up in corners. I got a groupon for a brazilian mani and was kinda of intrigue to see whats the difference. Booked my appt for Saturday for a wedding and i didnt get the dirty look when i presented my groupon. I picked my color from a small selection of colors, a few OPIs, more essies and some random brand and they also had sally hansen gel I forgot the person's name who did my nails but she was really friendly. She talked a little too much to her colleagues in a different language but i didnt really mind but it is something i noted. I sat on a salon chair, the one where people get their hair cut and got my nails done on the side. Strange. There was no tables and my hands was placed on a counter box. I thought it was weird and it wasnt really the most comfortable placement for a mani. The water used barely warm and she coated my nails in lotion? And putting it back into the water...maybe that is the Brazilian way? Anyways, she filed my nails right and she did cut my cuticles and that was done well. Here is the really manicure part. She painted my nails with precision and it was cool. HOWEVER...the second coat...she literally painted my whole nail and a bit onto my skin...and no it wasnt just one finger or so, it was all 10! She said that this is what makes Brazilian mani different than others, that it is entirely covered. what is the difference between me doing it myself and you then? After waiting for a bit for my nails to air dry, she asked if i wanted to use the blower to dry it a bit more so i said sure. I'm honestly mad with myself for not checking the reviews on here because they are all pretty spot on with my experience. WORST mani/pedi I've ever had in my life. Sat in a styling chair in the middle of the salon, lady rolled over a bucket for my feet. She barley even washed them, took no dead skin off. At the end of my toes she brought over a nail drier which I mistakenly let my feet rest on the bottom only to realize the whole entire thing was covered in some stick substance and dirt/hair. I was absolutely appalled. Moving in to the manicure, I had to balance my feet in the air (provided no slip on disposable shoes) in order to avoid the mystery sticky substance on the drier all while twisting my body in order for my nails to be done. She painted only 2 layers of polish, and then proceed to use ail polish remover and take the polish off the very top of my nails? I have no clue. I was just so annoyed and disgusted at that point I wanted to leave. ***DO NOT GET YOUR NAILS DONE HERE*** They are not equipped properly in any means, not to mention there were zero cosmetology licenses present. read more

First time visiting Brazil Rio. It's one of those businesses where you have to walk down a flight of stairs to get to. I bought a Groupon for a mani/pedi. I had made an appointment a week in advance and got two confirmation texts but they still had me wait almost 20 minutes before they saw me. There don't have any of those chairs where the water fills automatically and bubbles. The manicurist had to fill this plastic tray with hot water so my feet could soak. No foot massage but manicurist did to a good job filing and treating my feet. The pedicure itself was okay and they did give offer me a bottled water. Also, there was no dryer/heater to make the pedicure dry faster. I had to wait for it to air dry. I had no problem redeeming the Groupon and the staff was friendly enough. I rarely write reviews, but this one was unsatisfying, to say the very least. The person who did my nails was very nice and sweet, so I still gave her a tip. But if it were strictly up to the way she did the mani/pedi, it would be $0 (I'm sorry, she was very nice after all!). BUT, this was not a good mani/pedi. For one, their gel removal fee was $10 which is kind of insane judging from the fact that each finger wasn't meticulously foiled. Instead, it was a bowl of acetone she had me dip my hands in for the duration of my pedicure which was roughly an hour (dried out my fingers so much). No conventional massage chairs were in place. You are basically sitting on a chair and having your feet in a bucket. The whole process took 2.5 hours and I couldn't wait to get out of there as the chair was uncomfortable. My butt was hurting after an hour. And when she did the manicure, she was on my right while doing my right hand but I had to twist my body for my left. As I said, very uncomfortable/couldn't wait to be out. And the way the mani/pedi was done was by painting outside the nails. Her process was painting out of line and then going back and using acetone with a toothpick with cotton bits to clean it up on my skin. I don't like how close she got the nail polish into my nail beds. She gave me oil for my fingers because of the damage all the acetone was doing. However, she did it before my nails were dry, so in the end, I had rough nail surfaces on every finger. In the end, it didn't even look like I got them professionally done. Never have I ever had a mani/pedi with this "technique." I also realized some of my fingers were hurt because she had cut too deep when treating my cuticles/nail beds. Also, acetone exposure to the open wounds hurt. She did offer me water at the end, so that was nice but that was at the end of an arduous 2.5 hours. WILL NOT BE BACK. read more

Had a disappointing visit yesterday. My highlights look good, but a few things left a sour taste in my mouth. I've been here several times before for both highlights and keratin treatments. I called to make an appointment for a full head of balayage highlights and asked how much it would be. The receptionist/manager (?) said that it was hard to say without seeing my hair, which I understand. She said it could be $250 or more or less, depending. OK, that was fine. I've never paid more than $220 at this salon, and my hair is shorter than it's ever been by several inches, so I was thinking it would be the same or maybe cheaper than before. To start with, my stylist was an hour late for my 10 am appointment. There was "train trouble," which I do understand, but still frustrating. I know how bad the MTA is, but so should everyone else, right? Hence, leave extra time to get where you're going, yes? I ended up starting my appointment at 11 and not leaving until 5 pm. Seriously, yes, 5 pm. He did a very good and meticulous job, and I'm glad he was thorough, but that was by far the longest hair appointment I've ever had! I'm used to four or even five hours in the chair for highlights, but this was a new record for me... When I went to pay, she said it would be "$250 as she quoted on the phone," which threw me off since she had not given me a quote, but a range, and because as mentioned, my hair is now a good 4 or 5 inches shorter than last time and I paid $220. OK, fine. BUT- and this is the part that really ticks me off...She said "$250 for the highlights and $40 for the blow dry." What?? I have never paid extra for a blow dry at this salon after color services. Nor was I warned about the charge or asked if I wanted one! AND after blowdrying and styling my hair, the stylist spent several minutes taking pictures. So really, the benefit was for the stylist and salon and not for me- I was just going to be at home with my kids for the weekend! I would not have agreed to an extra charge of $40 if I had been asked and I am super irked about it. There is NO excuse for charging people for services they have not consented to. None. And can we please revisit the fact my appointment started an HOUR late? I mean, this would be the smart time to say, "Hey, we started charging for a blowdry after color services, but since you were inconvenienced by the appointment starting an HOUR late, we are not charging you today." I mean this would be the smart thing from a business perspective, right? So I don't know. My stylist was very sweet and talented and my highlights look good, but part of the reason I continued going there was because it was a good value. Just finished a manicure and pedicure appointment and the service was fantastic! Vivian was extremely welcoming and talked you through every step of the process - felt like I was having my nails done by a close friend. She was extremely considerate in making sure to tailor the appointment to your specific needs - getting out special tools and asking for preferences for certain options. The service was very thorough and she took the full hour to make sure it was done perfectly. Even asking me to check afterwards to be sure I was happy and didn't need any further touch ups. The salon is a bit hidden, so I was walking back and forth when looking for it. It's tucked away downstairs at the end of the row of shops, but well appointed once you get inside. This was a classic, read before you book moment! I was gifted via Groupon a manicure/pedicure. Who turns down a freebie? Not I. When I called to book, I had to wait an entire week. I was impressed, assuming there was a high demand for their services. So of course my expectation exceeded the normal experiences I have had in Brooklyn nail salons situated on every other block. WRONG! Pay close attention, because you just might pass it like I did today. The concurrent theme is quaint and minimalist. You walk down a small flight of stairs, watch your head, and land literally in front of the receptionist. There is no waiting area, just a chair in front of the receptionist and another in a corner (as if you're in a time-out). I was 30 minutes early for my appointment and opted to engage the receptionist in conversation. The staff that I interacted with (receptionist, male hairdresser, and Danie the nail technician) were quite pleasant. It was finally my turn and Danie escorted me to a salon chair where my back was up against the mirror and we were tucked in between the hair salon and wash station. I was immediately transported from the "spa" to someone's living room. I mean, it was a makeshift workstation. You grab a chair, a bucket lined with a plastic bag then filled with warm water, and tools. Voila! I was apprehensive at first, but I figured you would not advertise on Groupon if you did not have your ish together. Unfortunately, my phone died just as I was about to snap a picture. Ok, here's my attempt to help you visualize. You have a salon chair with some sort of floor metal bar (think a miniature balance bar) to rest your foot. Remember to bring flip-flops, because I forgot and they have none to offer. The bar became uncomfortable after a while. There are no dryers for your feet and I saw just two for your hands. It had two strands of black hair where I was supposed to place my hands. Ick! Given the small size of the space, I would imagine that they could only handle one customer at a time. If you have a hair appointment, they could probably see up to 3. Despite the lack of furniture, Danie did an INCREDIBLE job on my hands and feet. She dabbed products on each toe, cut and filed, dealt with the cuticles before lathering each foot to wash off. The hands were a little more challenging and I had to pivot my body towards one side for her to take the same steps, but except with a spritz bottle. FLAWLESS! Everything is nice, soft, and smooth. The nail polish looks as though I could have put on nails. She used a technique that I have never seen to clean the edges (a small sharp-pointed stick lightly wrapped in cotton then dampened with nail polish remover). After my toes were relatively dry, she wrapped them in plastic then went ahead and helped me put on my socks then sneakers. Such an angel! I loved that the tools that were used on my feet were single use only. It was definitely a weird experience for me and I would not become a repeat customer, but Danie was well worth the trouble. Oh and remember to bring cash. I was a 2pm appointment and they had no change for a $20 and she most certainly earned her tip. So I had to walk back up the stairs, turned the corner, asked for a change at the bank, then walked back to leave it for Danie. This was definitely a memorable mani/pedi experience for mixed reasons lol. read more

I see a few bad reviews about the mani pedi but I must assure you that's just from people who aren't familiar with the Brazilian way. Your polish will look fresh for much longer because it goes all the way to your cuticles. The lotion's purpose is moisturizing and loosening your cuticles. The art of the Brazilian manicure is getting rid of all the cuticles (a lot of places don't do that to hands), and very skillfully removing the excess polish. Came here for the first time just today and to sum it up it was GREAT! Being Brazilian, I'm well aware that this is exactly the type of experience that's given at nail salons in brazil. No ones got space or money to have huge tables and chairs in Brazil so the fact that you sit in a regular chair with a small table rolled up next to you is completely normal and honestly not that bad. Staff was incredibly friendly and very professional and even offered me water. For those that don't know, the Brazilian way of doing nails differs a lot from the American way (lots of cuticle cutting, not painting with precision but CLEANING up with precision, and lotion to soften cuticles). End result is 10/10 but understandable if you're a little freaked out because you're not Brazilian/used to it. Still would urge everyone to give it a try because the results make you feel so, so good with clean cuticles and nails!! read more

Sooo I had this place do my keratin treatment and the woman burned my head. It hurt really bad at the end and I thought maybe her straightener was on super high heat- I've straightened my hair many times and sometimes my iron is too hot so I didn't think much of it. But she legit burned my head. About 2 hours after the treatment I felt crusty clumps of what I thought were left over keratin cream in my hair but it was actually burned skin. So gross. A Brazilian wax can be a very traumatizing, embarrassing, and painful experience for a girl. Any place that acts professional and alleviates the pain or embarrassment is doing it right and deserves kind words. I've tried many of the cheaper Asian places, and while you get a good deal, the wax often takes longer and is more painful, as well as dirtier/more cramped. I immediately got a good vibe when I walked in (without an appointment, and they let me wait just a bit). The salon is bright and airy, housed in an old loft, and full of friendly Brazilians. The waxer, Val, was amazing. She's a super nice middle-aged Brazilian lady who only can say a few key phrases pertinent to the job "all hair gone?" "men really like". The wax fast quick and the most painless I had. $50 is definitely worth it when it comes to that region of the body. I would gladly go back again. Note that they accept credit cards, but not for tip. Not a spa, not a spa experience The mani-pedi is about as luxurious as having your girlfriend do your nails at home. On the plus side, sterile tools. The metal utensils come in a sterilized pouch and the emery boards and buffers are single use. Since they use a bucket of sorts, lined with a plastic/garbage bag, it feels more sanitary. The staff is also pleasant and the mani-pedi was fine. Negatives No spa chair or dedicated mani-pedi area.I was tucked away in a corner between the salon area and waiting room seated in a regular chair. There is a relatively limited selection of colors and of the options, many look old. There's no basin or other way to clean/soak hands and no manicure table. Bottom line There are many other similarly priced options in the area that provide an overall better experience and focus exclusively on nails. Skip this even if you have a Groupon. read more

I have been to Bela Brazil for a Brazilian wax twice. I have been waxed by both Carla and Val. Let's start with Val. Pros: She was courteous and efficient. The wax didn't take too long, and (overall) she did a decent job. If this was my first wax ever, I wouldn't have thought that she did anything wrong. Cons: If I didn't already know (from Yelp) that she had experience, I would have thought that she was a beginner! Brazilian waxes can be very painful. It helps if the waxer applies pressure with their hand to the spot immediately after the strip is pulled. That does wonders for easing the pain. Every waxer I have ever had has done that except for Val. She did it, eventually, but I had to tell her to. She pluck the stray hairs either, but luckily there were not that many. She also only used a small amount of lotion afterward. Carla: My experience couldn't have been more different. Carla was absolutely the best waxer that I have ever had, bar none. I told her that she was good at it, and she replied that she had been doing it for decades. She also said "And it is important to love what you do." I really liked hearing that. She took a lot of care in her work. She was efficient, empathetic with the pain, and made me trust her immediately. She wasn't afraid to "get in there" and make sure that everyone was done properly. Afterward, she went over the entire area carefully and plucked any stray hairs. She put pressure when needed to alleviate pain. Used lotion liberally afterward. I did not feel rushed at all, though perhaps it was because I had an appointment at the end of the day. Final words: I believe that you will get a decent wax no matter what from this place. However, when I come back, I will be asking for Carla. You will not get a better wax from anyone else. read more

YOU GUYS! i found my go-to place for Brazilian keratin treatments. I've gotten keratin treatments done for years now in different places and had yet to find a good place in NYC that wouldn't be over $300. I made the mistake of going to KeratinBar TWICE cause i thought maybe the first time i'd just gotten bad service.. but nope. Both times the treatment was horrrible and lasted barely two weeks if that (on top of the fact that they ask you to tip $80 dls on a $120 treatment, such a scam). Anyway, at Brazil Rio Spa they were friendly, professional, and most importantly the best brazilian Keratin i've ever gotten. Alan did an amazing job! He was quick and knew exactly what he was doing, now that i've washed my hair twice since the treatment my hair is just amazingly smooth and soft, i've gotten many compliments. CALLING ALL MIXED GIRLS...AND BOYS REALLY..lol. I came in with a deal off Bloomspot for a cut and blow dry. I did have to wait about 30 min because of over scheduling BUT...I also got what I would say is the BEST haircut I have ever had. My hair is naturally curly and most hair dressers really don't know what to do with it because it is not super kinky nor is it super straight. Well, my hair was no match for Jacob. He is very familiar with "in-between" hair, if you will. He made suggestions about how it should be cut and then proceeded to create a masterpiece. Thank you God!!!!! Got a super discount on a haircut here, was broke and shaggy and thought I'd take the plunge. Since the spa offered the discount to drum up business, it seems like the least I can do is give them a review because I ended up with a really, really nice haircut. I got my hair cut by Alex. At first I was a little worried because his English is not great (I'm putting that mildly). So after learning the hard way via a bad haircut a few years ago, I was REALLY CLEAR about what I wanted and made sure he understood me before he started. I think I made him a little nervous b/c at first he was reluctant to take off too much hair. But it all worked out and I walked out of there with a really, really nice haircut and blow out. I'm knocking off a star b/c "as good as it gets" feels just a little hyperbolic. They weren't running on time, so I did have to wait. The atmosphere is a little... unfocused. There was a TV on in the background, Music was playing though it didn't really create a mood. It was a little loud in there. And, as mentioned, with this stylist, I wish I could have communicated more freely. On the plus side, the light is nice, and they're right near the 1-2-3 and the A-C-E.
