It's a shame that I have lived in Charlotte for four years and I have now just visited Brawleys. Bad beer snob I am. I called about picking up some Southern Tier PumKing and was told they could hold one for me. When I arrived the lady remembered my voice, which was a pleasant surprise. She could also tell I was a new customer due to how wide my eyes got when I entered the store. She gave me a little tour, asked me which style of beer I prefer. Once I told her IPA's are my favorite she showed me a lot that sell like hot cakes that I should check out. I then had the pleasure of speaking with Mike about ordering beer from out of state, which he told me was a possibility. The store is deceivingly small with an ample supply of great micro brews. The service was very friendly and I look forward to returning and trying some of those IPA's. Mike also informed me that I will NOT shop at Total Wine anymore, and he is right. This review is long overdue! Brawleys is a fun bottle shop with a great vibe and lots of beers on tap. Furthermore, it is walking distance from my house. Aka. winning. My husband and I came here Sunday afternoon for a beer before dinner. There is a good list of beers on draft to choice from, in addition to all the bottles around the place. They work on the honor system and you just settle up when you are ready to leave. For this occasion I actually went with a cider, which is a bit unusual for me. The Windy Hill Pumpkin Cider was absolutely amazing. My husband went with a stout. They have tons of tables and seating outside and a few indoors. The best spot in Charlotte to find hard to get beers before leaving NC ! This place always has something I've never tried, it can get pricey but you only live once so go for it. I'm not over here often enough to hit Brawley's as often as I'd like, but I'll make the trip to pick up special occasion beverages or if in need of a keg of good beer at an affordable price. After touring the walk in fridge to see what was in stock keg-wise, dude claimed he could get pretty much anything, given a few days notice. Awesome. Also pulled out his last bottle of Brooklyn Black Ops to (brag about) show us. He then quickly re-stashed it behind the counter. This is a beer cave, complete with dark corners, mysterious brews, and an old doggy. Not open late (7pm every day 'cept Sunday, when they close at 5) but worth making the time after work to swing by-- great wine selection and seriously impressive bottles of beer from all over the world, reasonably priced. Some may think $20 bottles of heifeweizen are over the top. Me, I'd rather put it on my Christmas list, knowing that it can, at least, be gotten somewhere in the Queen city. We were told to grab a free glass on the way out, which was a nice touch (we'd only dropped about $20). I'd have probably bought it anyway, since the collection of glasses is reasonably priced and diverse: flutes, pilsners, cute pints from around the states and globe (Ska Brewing, huzzah!). As their site says: "By necessity we sell the bigger corporate brands, but in a perfect world we would not." You can pick up some Heineken here, if need be, but there's far better choices to be had. read more

If you take beer seriously, Brawley's is really the only place you'd want to be seen buying brew. Beers from around the globe all smashed into a tiny little building. The owner is more than willing to help you find a beer to fit your taste. One thing that really pleases me about this place is their supply of Bell's. Most beer stores south of the Mason-Dixon think that Oberon is the only beer than Bell's has to offer the world. And oh, how wrong they are. 4-stars is the best I've been able to give so far and Brawley's definitely deserves all 4! This place hands down has the best selection of incredible wines at incredible prices of any shop I have ever been in, anywhere. Just an astounding selection of FABULOUS wines between $15 and $30. And I go into LOTS of wine stores. I was looking for an obscure french wine and the distributor told me to go over to Brawley's..."you mean the old Mike's Discount Beverage" I asked?!? "That's the one" he told me. Hell, Mike's Discount was where we went back in high school to buy beer when we were underage! My how it has changed. Now it's called Brawley's, but it's in the same place and is once again run by Mike Brawley, both of them! Well they didn't have the obscure french wine I was looking for but Mike Jr. and I started chatting. It was perfectly clear he had done some serious homework on each and every selection in the store. I simply took his advice and bought 5 separate selections, the most expensive was $27.99. Each and every one was spectacular...just an amazing experience/selection. Keep up the great work Mike!! NOTE: don't expect a warehouse, or a fancy building, but do expect a medium sized selection of carefully cultivated and EXCEPTIONAL wine choices. NOTE2: I classified this place as "inexpensive". Don't get me wrong, you can spend a lot of money on a bottle if that's what you want, but that's definitely not a prerequisite for finding exceptional wine. Best beer store and service in Charlotte HANDS DOWN. Mike and his mom are friendly and helpful. Go into the store, introduce yourself--they will treat you like family. Amazing selection of local beers from NC yet the toughest to find Belgians. All kinds of stuff in the keg. People say the wine selection is great but I never seem to get past the beer. Not sure where the one star reviewers get off on criticizing how Mike takes care of his customers. These "cherry pickers" never darken his door then try to get "their share" of perhaps something the store may get one case of. I am impressed he told them why. He could have just lied and told them he didn't have any. The one lady referred to another place in town--why didn't they sell it to her there? Been going here on the reg for 6+ years, from out of state. The skinni: Mike Brawley is King Beer in Charlotte. Brawley's is the best beer store, and the best service, in town. Don't go here for the selection alone, go here to get treated like the awesome person Mike knows you are. Let me just add this anecdote, which I am absolutely not making up or embellishing in any way: Several years ago, before I know Mike as well as I do now, I was in Charlotte with a female friend, buying beer at Brawley's when we realized she had locked her keys in her car. Damnation! Triple-aaah was going to take an hour to get there with a locksmith. Mike Brawley asked if we had eaten, and when we said no, he INSISTED we take his PERSONAL TRUCK out and get supper, which we did, at Moosehead. When we got back, the scrawney, ill-kempt locksmith showed up, popped the door in a frighteningly short amount of time, and all was well in Charlotte. I really can't recommend the place enough. Don't bother going if you have entitlement syndrome or if you are simply trying to snap up large quantity of limited release beers to sell on Ebay, as Mike is pretty sharp about such things. Hello friends In my search for kegs for multiple parties (at home and away), we come here. Among two other places. It's another type place about 75 feet away. Unlike That place, the prices are on display for the world to see. Posting prices gives confidence that everyone pays the same price. Can't believe all these years I have driven by and never have stopped in until recently. Enjoyed the decor - causal and intimate (in another words.., not much space for inside seating). 3 of us skipped the movie down the road when the line went for a mile, and came here to kill time (and drank beer). Most beer were $5-6 for a 16 oz pour - not the cheapest in town. The menu board is on a TV screen and it changes WAY too quickly so be prepared to feel really stupid because it will take you several rounds to get an idea of what you may want to order. I didn't browse the other side (where you can buy wine/beer) - now that I'm thinking of it, I guess you could buy those in the fridge and drink there. Definitely will go back for a visit. Pretty unique little bar/bottle shop. For being so small, they have a nice selection of 6 packs and bombers. It was packed for the Orange Bowl game. The size of it is really the only thing going against it.. I picked up a 6 pack of the Not Your Father's Ginger Ale (made some Moscow Mules with them for New Years - really good, actually!). Such a great local watering hole. This is one of those places that is able to make a newcomer feel welcome and like a regular. How do they do that? First the man behind the bar chats to you about what you would like to drink, and makes recommendations based on your taste profile. Second they don't let you open a tab but instead ask what you had at the end of the night. Honor system is not dead in the US! Third they are totally dog friendly including inside. I live very close to Brawley's. It's nice being able to walk over to a local bottle shop and grab a six pack to go or a pint at the bar. They usually have a decent selection or beers (local and otherwise) for a decent price. My only (small) qualm is that the seating/space around the bar is very limited. Best craft beers on tap in CLT!! Seriously they have some of the most unique limited time beers on tap to try like barrel aged, gose, local brews, sours, and of course multiple IPAs. They are part beer store and other part tap room, my favorite spot to buy Founders too. Don't forget they are dog friendly and have a free book library exchange just outside the door. Horrible customer service!!! I heard that they had received their Great Lakes Christmas Ale shipment today so I went to purchase some on my lunch hour. I was told I was "not a regular" and therefore was "not able to purchase any". She then hesitantly offered to sell me 1 bottle. Not one 6 pack but ONE bottle. What on earth am I going to do with 1 bottle of beer?! I was also told that this seasonal beer from my hometown would not be on the floor and would "only be sold to regulars". I would have become a "regular" had they sold me the beer since I noticed they had an awesome array of choices. good selection for a small shop and if you're wanting to buy a 6 pack, then go for it. I want to like Brawley's, they are small and local and so I feel compelled to support them. But they can not have any more of my money. The draft beer is priced at the absolute top of the recommended price range by the breweries they represent. I can't justify paying 8$ for 1 beer that cost 12$ for a 6-pack at the grocery store up the street. They also don't keep track of what you drink while there. This might seem silly to some, but I bought 6 beers in over the course of 90min for a few friends, then payed over 50$ with a 20% tip and was forced to play memory when I went to pay. One of the reasons I go out to is to pay for this convenience and when a 6 beer tab is 50+$ it seems silly to not be given. My money goes elsewhere. read more

I absolutely hate to post negative reviews but honestly had one of the worst retail experiences ever at this place today. We went to Brawley's - at the recommendation of a friend (AND my husband who used to frequent the place when he lived nearby) - to find a limited release beer and were treated incredibly rudely. Essentially the message was that since we were not "regular" customers who "feed my kids" (direct quote), we were not welcome. It was one of the strangest, most insulting experiences I've ever had. I completely respect a message like, "I'm sorry, but the limited release is already reserved by existing customers"...instead, we heard, "I've got 12 bottles left but why would I sell one to you?" I was shaking when I left. That's just horrible customer service, and I will never return. read more

I stopped by here after reading about this place in Beer Advocate magazine as a must stop in Charlotte. I strolled up the day after the Hopslam event and saw lots of Hopslam on the floor. I walked around the store, taking in the vast selection of great IPAs, sours, and stouts. I ended up sitting down at the growler fill up station and noticed that they did pints there. To my amazement, they had the Lagunitas Citrusenesius (sp?) on draft and I knew instantly that is what I wanted. The owner came up and began to chat it up with me. Very quickly we both learned that we both loved craft beer and knew a lot about many beers. Michael was absolutely great. We talked about his draft list, the Hopslam event and how much money he raised for charity (which shows how much he cares about people in his community) and then we got onto to trailrunning. It only came up because I asked them about some trails at the US Whitewater National Center, because I was on my way to run there after a pint or two. I was given so many great spots to run in the Charlotte area... from Chrowder Mtn (I ran there the following day) and George Poston State Park (I ran there two days later). Michael was so welcoming! I wish this kind of establishment was located in my neighborhood back in Atlanta because this is where I would hang out every weekend! Michael noticed I was wearing a trucer hat backwards and asked if I ran in those a lot. I told him, "everyday". So he ran into the back and gave my his Brawley's Beverage trucker hat. I can honestly say since I visited there a month ago, I have rocked his hat on runs easily 10+ times. Brawley's is one of my favorite bottle shops in Charlotte and is the probably the OG in the game. There are multiple taps a video screen with their draft list. Their bottle selection is pretty damn good and varies from the others in the area. Everything is sectioned pretty nice and the prices are some of the best in the area. Also, they do get specialty kegs that they like to hide which is always a pleasant suprise. The only thing i would change in this place is moving to proper glassware instead of plastic cups. Not sure how I am just getting around to reviewing this place since it backs up to my neighborhood and I have been several times. Definitely an eclectic spot as it has the best of both worlds regarding a local pub and a bottle shop. I would describe it as close as I have found to the feel of a neighborhood pub you would normally find in Britain. They have about 20 taps that rotate often that include beers and ciders that can be tough to find in Charlotte. Last time we went, my wife got a pumpkin cider from Windy Hill in SC and I grabbed a coffee stout. Neat patio area that is a great place to unwind. I would also recommend checking their bottle and wine stock as they do a good job with the limited space they have. Don't hesitate to ask a question about anything in the shop as the owners are very knowledgeable and have helped me make selections in the past.
