I'm not sure it's possible to be hungry while driving on I-94 without making a brat stop here. It's very conveniently located off of the highway, making it easy to fuel up for the rest of your road trip. Obviously, you can get a tasty bratwurst and Wisconsin brew here, but there is a lot more going on. For example, they've got cheese curds to go and live music at night. The space is surprisingly large and multi-tiered & -roomed. I could see a kid getting lost in this place (didn't happen while I was here). I enjoyed this place before the pandemic. It's a nice spot. However, I went today and I could count on one hand how many employees were wearing a mask. I won't be coming back. While I can understand customers making the choice for themselves I was disappointed to see it from the staff. Again, in my 28 years, I'd never been to the Brat Stop. Passed by a bunch of times... heard it's someplace you HAVE TO go. I hope it's more lively when it's not 3pm on a Wednesday, which it was when we were there. There were only one or two others tables seated when we got there, and when we left. The server seemed a little indifferent to us being there, but all in all, everything was okay. We just wanted a quick lunch anyway, on our way back home from Milwaukee. I had the jumbo brat which is on special on Wednesdays. It's cheaper than ordering a regular one, so I went with it. I also ordered fries with cheese on the side and coleslaw. G had the jalepeno cheddarwurst, also with cheese fries, and I had him order the sauerkraut so I could try it. There is only one thing I was disappointed with, for the food. The side of cheese (Merkt's which they melted down) was $2.00. So, we spent $4.00 on 2 sides of cheese. I've gotten Merkt's on the side other places for less than a buck. And that was in Illinois. This place is a must if you are traveling between Chicago and Milwaukee. I love the grittiness of the place. Staff tells you how it is and the food ranks high on the grease scale. If you haven't noticed, the place is BIGGER than it looks. Just take a peek around. Dedicated Badgers room. Full preforming stage. Cheese + Brat shop, volleyball courts and a 365 day beer garden. I came here for the St. Baldricks event yesterday. This is my second time going there for that event. Last year I did not order any food but this year I did which brings me to this review. It's ridiculously crowded at this event. My hubby and I shared a large order of cheese curds ($10). I was worried it would be too much food with the brats and sides but it was easy to finish these tiny curds. They were not good but not bad- just okay. I've definitely had better in Wisconsin. I got the Cheddarwurst Brat ($10) with a side of fries and German Potato Salad ($3.95). The brat itself was not that good. I expected it to be oozing cheese but it had a little bit of cheese on the inside and then they squirted some cheese on top of the brat. I was not impressed. Plus, the bread was kind of hard and it did not go well together. The fries were absolutely terrible. I absolutely love french fries and I would confidently say these are in the top 3 worst fries I've ever had. The German Potato Salad some how tasted like cooked apples. I ate one bite and let the rest go to waste. Sad it costed an extra $4. My hubby got a Brat ($10) with a side of fries and cole slaw. He thought everything was just ok. I understand it was super busy that day but the server was terrible. When he brought me my order, all my basket had on it was a brat. There were no fries next to it but everyone else at my table had fries next to theirs. He didn't come back to check on us until I was done eating all of the cheese curds and my brat. That's when I was able to ask for the fries. I also had to ask for a water (the first time was before I even put in my food order) 3 times before I finally got one. I was already done with my meal by then. If it wasn't for this event taking place here, I would NEVER eat here again. The Brats were riiiidiccuuullousllyyy over priced. $10 for a brat? Reading through some of the other reviews it is simply unfair to give places a 1 star when you have not even stepped into the place or just basing a review off of the staff. Keep in mind some of the best food comes from hole in the walls and places that have diversity in their environment is much to be desired. Let's just start with the cheddarwurst... yummm, amazing, so good. The Cajun brat is also very tasty along with the traditional Wisconsin cheese curds. I can't really say that rating the Wisconsin cheese soup would be fair because it is not a food that has been explored much during my adventures; however, it had a good taste. The gift shop is small; however, it has some cute little souvenirs. The best part about the gift shop is not only can you buy cheese they have the sausage that you can eat at the Tavern which in my opinion is awesome for football gatherings. read more

Our family stopped here for dinner on the day after Christmas. Like some others have mentioned, we found the food pricey for what you got - $8-9 for a brat and some crinkle cut fries seemed a bit extravagant. The brat (and bun) was pretty tasty, but I found a long piece of hair in my german potato salad, and the rest of the food items ordered at our table were just okay at best. The service left something to be desired as well - we were originally seated in an area with no lights on, and it was too dark to read our menus - so we had to ask to move to an area with lighting. Overall it was okay, but definitely not good enough to merit the 18% gratuity that was automatically added to our bill for having a table of 6. I know it's a dive-y place, and so a little grunge is part of the charm, but that doesn't excuse the unsanitary bathrooms that we encountered. If you want a tasty brat dinner, you'd probably be better off grilling up some Johnsonvilles in your own backyard. read more

I may be overrating this place because I have generally fond memories from last century. For what it is, which is a touristy Interstate stop, it's not bad. It's not the worst choice you could make for a sit down meal to break up a road trip, though if you're Northbound I'm going to recommend that you try to push up a little farther to the somewhat similar but better Mars Cheese Castle. We sometimes stop here on the way out to pick up something for old Chicago area friends (not family, they're Buddhist), or even to export to the Western Michigan area mainly because the grocery part of the Brat Stop is convenient and quick. However, if you're Southbound and looking for Wisconsin edible gifts, I prefer leaving about 15 minutes earlier so I can stop at the O-H bakery, or Woodman's for Kringle, Wisconsin sausage and cheese, and Wisconsin beer. Again, the Cheese Castle is another option. If your primary goal is to break up an I-94 road trip right here in Kenosha, right off the exit, I suggest considering the BIrchwood Grill right across from the Brat Stop. The food, ambiance, and service is a little better, but it's not touristy. read more

This place is legendary. En route from Milwaukee to Chicago...feeling a little under the weather after a night out in brew city? Brat Stop beckons to carnivores from 94. And they take the nearest exit. I had my first Brat Stop experience a few weeks ago. The environment's so... weird. So... Wisconsin. The place is huge. The menu's shaped like a frothy beer mug. According to the carnivores, the brats were just alright. My tuna salad sandwich (I know, I know--who gets a tuna sammy at Brat Stop? ME) was QUITE good. I don't know why this place gets so much hate on here. Its not fine dining--its called Brat Stop. Have that frame of mind when coming. I ordered the standard brat meal with fries and red cabbage. Everything was fine. The sides were more impressive than the brat. Its not fancy, but it doesn't try to be. It was very affordable. The beer is cheap, but selection is nothing to write home about. At least they have Lagunitas IPA. Server was friendly, fast, and not overwhelming. A+ The building is big and cavernous, with carpeting. The Brat Stop is a comfortable old barn of a diner/sports bar right off the Highway in Kenosha. The food is what you would expect for a truck stop. Everything is breaded and there is enough Red Meat on the menu to make any Atkins dieter smile. As the saying goes, "it is what it is". The red meat, breaded Cheese and the pictures of all of the washed up 80's hair bands on the wall make it worth at least one visit. The Brat Stop may be the only reason to stop in Kenosha. Four guys stopped after golf today for a bite to eat. Mid afternoon so the place wasn't very busy. It's been years since we had visited this historic establishment and a lot of wonderful memories were shared among our group during this visit. Amount the memories were the outstanding Kemen bratwurst once grilled and served up here. The brats served today were poor imitations of those served years earlier. Today's seemingly parboiled and barely grilled brats would be a unsatisfactory from any restaurant but one served from a place with "Brat" in it's name is terrible. Felt compelled to check this place off the bucket list after a day at the outlets, so we stopped in on an early Sunday evening. The crowd was mixed and it seemed like a lot of locals just hangin out. The vibe is dive-y and seems like it would be really fun if you got hammered and ate a thousand cheese curds. We ordered the curds, two brats with tiny sides, and two New Glarus beers. The food was good, but not blown away by anything. Also, the Brat Stop seems to be a bit of a tourist trap, as our food was pretty overpriced for the quality ($40 for two people). The brat entree with chips came with a kid size bag of Lays (womp womp). If you do come here, I would say come for the booze as they have a big selection of New Glarus beers on draft. read more

Walk in here and you are back into the '70 and 80's. Fun roadhouse feel. I go there with the family for dinner. One time the place was filled with metal-heads and the band was on stage warming up-the kids got a kick out of that. Another time it was country bands. What a riot. Ok, the food...really good "basket" food. Burgers are great. I tried a corned beef sandwich and it was spot-on. The BEST root beer I have every had in my life. As a die hard Chicago sports fan I always comment about the Packers when they play. "Stupid cheese-heads..." Only one time, as I was saying it, I realized we were at the Brat Stop. Thankfully no one heard me. The Brat Stop is a bar, restaurant, entertainment venue and cheese mart all rolled up into one. They offer breakfast, lunch, appetizers, soup, sandwiches, pizza, and even a kids menu. The cool thing about the kids menu is that kids under 12 eat free from 4 - 8 pm on Mondays thru Thursdays. Breakfast is served till noon while lunch starts at 11:00 am. I haven't had breakfast yet but I can suggest the 2 Brat Plate for lunch. It has one Pork & one Veal Brat served with your choice with choice of French fries, German or American Potato Salad, and choice of Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, or Cole Slaw all for about $5. The only reason this place is getting 4 stars is because of how awesome the food is. I love cheese with all of my heart, so when I drove past the giant CHEESE sign, how could I not be intrigued? The grilled cheese is awesome, but out of all the assortments I have gotten the Three Cheese grilled ham and cheese with marble rye bread is the best. They also have surprisingly good fries there -just remember to order a side of cheese! The cheese soup is very good as well. Cheese, cheese, cheese. The only thing I cannot stand about this place is that is seems as though the servers do not want to have anything to do with being there. My first time eating in Wisconsin. Brat Stop is worth the stop. No pun intended. As I turned off the freeway, my GPS kept stating "you have reached your destination," however, I couldn't find Brat Stop. Then suddenly, bam, the big sign saying "CHEESE" came into view and I made a turn into the parking lot. From a distance, Brat Stop looks like a truck stop. I got out of my car in my nice dress clothes and wondered, "oh no, will this restaurant be filled with men in flannel, sitting around in a smoky bar, watching the Packers game?" However, once I entered the restaurant, it was totally different than what I expected. The restaurant/bar/sports bar is a relaxed setting with quite a large seating area. We were led to a booth (where I didn't find it smoky at all.. but perhaps because I come from MI where people can smoke in restaurants), and was given menus in the shape of beer mugs. I chose the Spotted Cow to start out while we surveyed the menu. It was Tex Mex night, but we chose to go with a brat (since that's what they're known for). I got the Cajun brat and my friend, the garlic brat. We decided to get the cheese curds as appetizers- which was the only disappointment of the night. As I bit into the wanna-be-mozarella sticks, the cheese was a slight tint of orange, but this deep fried cheese ball.. wasn't that amazing. It just really, tasted like mozarella sticks. The brats came out and they were actually quite a good size. They were both cooked thoroughly on a toasted sesame brat bun- I chose fries and sauerkraut with my meal as well. The brats themselves were pretty good- not the juiciest ones I've had, but still pretty good. I felt the cajun and the garlic spices could have been stronger, but still hearty and I could barely finish mine. Service was friendly, prompt, and the place did not get too busy (although I thought it would with a Packers game on?). Nonetheless, as I'm a sucker for simple, unique diner type restaurants, I liked this restaurant overall. If you're meeting up with a friend and just want to chill and catch-up, this is a great place to go. A family friendly setting as well. I would probably give it 3.5 stars/5 stars, as the food didn't exactly WOW me, but as this was my first time in WI to eat, it still was a good overall experience. So next time you see the big, "CHEESE" lit up sign in Kenosha, definitely make the stop. read more

Whether you're just bored and want to cross the Illinois border for some cheese and whatnot, or if you're driving back from further north and back down, or whatever... this is always one of those places you can't go wrong with. I love stopping in for cheese curds and lunch and hitting the store attached on the way out. For starters, I think I've had a brat once...I don't believe this place, given the name "Brat Stop" that the brats are to die for or anything but there are a variety of flavors... I'm usually here on the weekend so I'll get their broasted chicken special which comes with two good pieces of chicken, bread/butter, a choice of potato, and cole slaw. And of course...cheese curds as an appetizer (they come in two sizes). Bands play here too, though I've never seen bands in this place...in the store on your way out you can pick up cheese or Wisconsin brewed beer like New Glaurus beer! The service has always been pretty good... it CAN get busy here too but the place is pretty big, I never had to wait too long to be seated during lunch time. I did stop here years ago on the way to Alpine Valley and our server told us we just missed Steven Tyler from Aerosmith - as we were on our way to the Motley Crue/Aerosmith concert... talk about timing!!!! I had an absolutely amazing experience here this past weekend. We were starving following the July 4th fireworks show at Kenosha Harbor, and decided to head here to eat. Unfortunately, I forgot that they closed early because of the holiday weekend, so we were one of the last customers to come in, and I was willing to go some place else to avoid ruining the poor bartender's life. She was extremely friendly, however, and told us that we were not an inconvenience, at all. We sat at the bar and I ordered the Cajun brat with a side of fries. I forgot how amazing the fries were here. They have that great, crispy layer on the outside that curly fries have, and the brat was also amazing. Huge portions, too. We shared an appetizer of cheese curds, which were also amazing {you get twice as many as BWW gives you and Brat Stop's are, not surprisingly, much better}. The bartender gave us three dipping sauces: ranch, dill, and marinara. They were all great. (especially dill) My brother also managed to have a good time with the games they have along the back wall while we waited for our food. I honestly can't think of a complaint for this place. It was a bit dark, but it also didn't help that it was practically empty, so I am sure more people would have made it feel more alive. I am really grateful that the employees here made us feel so welcome and gave us such a great end to our night. We are from out of town and don't get to visit often, so it was an experience to remember. I will not be going to the Kenosha area without visiting Brat Stop again. read more

Well, Today 06/05/2020 visited Brat Stop for lunch. I and my friend ordered two prime rib sandwiches with salads. Yes, the salads were good. However, the prime ribs were very chewy and contained around 40% of fat. We could not finished the sandwiches because they were simply inedible. When the waitress approached our table, I showed her what she brought to the table. She was apologetic and subsequently gave the bill which had full price for what we ordered. I was a bit discomforted to see the bill of $35.00 for substandard food quality. Since, I have been coming here from 1973, and no more look forward to come back. Shame on you Brat Stop. read more

Dear owners, 1. Price is everything, and if you charge ridiculously high prices, either your business is struggling, or your labor is killing you. So, manage your staff (if you know how), but i don't think you do because they are rude, and have no direction on what tables to serve. That's your fault. High prices equals, fool a customer once and they don't return. Cleanliness: come on do you have horse builders on? Hate to see the back of the house or what is in your coolers. Clean up, repair, paint etc. Everyone deserves a chance so I will keep a watchful eye for a review that's states a clean updated house, great orderly service, friendly staff, at reasonable prices. WORST SERVICE!! NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE!!! Brat was okay. Nothing special served with small bag of Lay's. Water tasted pretty bad, service was terrible and place was dirty. Waited more than 15 minutes just to order, 20 minutes for the food, and 15 minutes for check. Wasted more than an hour at this place. Would rather go to KFC. Arranged a business lunch here. Worked out for our distances. Atmosphere was old and rustic-ish. Had large enough tables for the 8 of us comfortably. Loved the Cajun bratwurst and fries. For those of you that are fairly new to the area as I am, you may hear "Brat Stop" and think it is just a fast food place or read the sign and think that this is a place to pawn off unwanted children instead of eating sausage-like material. It is more than that. It is a cheese store, restaurant, bar, and a place where fairly well known local rock bands play (like Local H and Chevelle). They also have a 100 inch TV screen and a few arcade games. It is also connected to the Parkway Chateau, which is a nice banquet hall that also serves good food. I only ate lunch at the Brat Stop, but it was good. I had a Prime Rib sandwich and fries (something about those fries were damn good!) that were pretty decent for only $7.50. I think the jalapeno poppers were about $5, but you get about twice as much as you do at most other places. read more

So what is the big deal about this place? I am not so sure. I ordered the Tuesday Two Brat special for $8.25. It included 2 brats, fries, and sauerkraut. If it was not the special, it would have been $11 for the two brat specials. Thats kinda pricey... Any how, the brats were pretty good and pretty tasty... Now there are some things that I did not like. Since it was a club/bars/venue, the place smelled like old cigarette smoke. Coming from IL I have become accustomed to clean air indoors... so I did not like that. Another thing I am not sure about was the communal onion and relish container. When the waitress asked if I wanted onion and relish, I told her yes. She proceeded to grab relish and onion from a table that have already finished their dinner. I rather have gotten individual like side dishes of onion and relish. As for the place... it really isn't anything to write home about. Don't get me know. Service is not fast, they still smoke inside at the bar and the decor is definately Wisconsin, but the food is GOOD! Great variety of brats, great appetizers and if you do not want a brat, try the chicken panini, it is kinda spicy!
