Someone dropped a kitten off in my neighborhood around Thanksgiving 2025. I posted pictures on Ring , Facebook, spoke to neighbors and friends. It was friendl, yet would take off after being fed. Finally, by January 2, 2026 I was able to put her in a crate and drove to the nearest Human Society (no available space). I then took her to the next closest Brandywine Valley SPCA. They took her right in! AMEN. I have 2 indoor adopted cats and we care for 2 fixed outdoor feral cats. I pray her owner finds her or she gets adopted to a great family read more

I took a very sick cat there Saturday n they wouldn't even see her. But told me I could bring her back at 330 because they start euthanizing the dogs at that time n I can leave me cat n they will do her too. Funny thing is after having them spay n neuter these 23 cats I feed they were returned in filthy cages w multiple empty cans n poop smashed everywhere and they cats were all sick. I've treated them twice for upper respiratory infection but it didn't clear up. They never wormed them as they said they did n never came back w any records . Out of the 23 they spayed n brought back sick there's 8 left. The one they refused to see is suffering because she can no longer urinate n the only thing she can move is her eyes. I recently brought my boston terriers to the spca on churchmans road I initially paid 40 to hold my spot thankfully the vet said she couldn't fix my dogs! I didn't receive my deposit back. and the man in line who just adopted a dog from them was saying his dog had a bad cough little did I know at the time his dog definitely had kennel cough and my dogs all 5 at my home were sick for weeks. they are so unorganized at that spca and lack of employees not to mention the urine on the floor! I don't take my dogs anywhere and never have boarded them I was in there for 30 mins tops and couldn't believe that 3 days later my dogs sounded just like the guy in front of me dog! now I have to wait until my dogs are fully recovered before taking them to get fixed anywhere else! I adopted a sweet tuxedo kitten in August. From the moment I walked in, the people who worked at the front desk were very dismissive. I asked if anyone knew anything about the kittens in the kitten room - they sent someone in. When asked if the kitten I was curious about had tested fiv/felv negative, I was told yes. I have a second cat at home, so a "no" would have been a deal breaker. Once I got home and looked through his paperwork, I discovered that he had not yet, in fact, been tested for fiv/felv. My fault. Should've looked at the paperwork more closely. But still. They also should have known. And if they didn't, should not have told me "yes."Fortunately, I had been quarantining my kitten anyway. About a week after bringing him home, he developed ringworm. He must have picked it up in the shelter, which did not seem very clean to me. Neither I nor my other cat ever developed it. When I called to ask about support, etc., I was again treated dismissively. While I love my little tuxedo kitten, I am going on seven weeks of keeping him in isolation, having to sanitize his room every other day - not to mention the money I've spent on meds and cleaning products and PPE. It's been emotionally draining. I will never adopt from BVSPCA again. I will also deter friends from adopting there. I'll stick to Providence Animal Center, where I've adopted my other cats and have had fabulous experiences. read more

I absolutely love my baby and he is straight up the light of my life. But I did have a few issues with the facility. While the front desk staff was kind, they told me that I could come get my dog after he was neutered in the morning. I drove two hours to get him that afternoon and was told he hadn't even been brought in for surgery yet. I wasn't able to stay, so I drove all the way home and back again later that evening, because I didn't want him to stay in a shelter overnight after having surgery. He came home with me and during the night, got SO SICK. Terrible upper respiratory virus. I know this is common for shelters, so I don't hold it against them, I just felt so bad that he was sick for like two weeks and recovering from surgery at the same time. I think my biggest issue was just lack of communication when it came to picking up my dog. I even had to call before I went back the second time to make sure he was actually out of surgery. Nobody even called to let me know. Other than that, the staff was friendly. I didn't go back into the kennel so I can't say what that was like. Someone went back, got him, and put us in a room to meet him. The lobby seemed pretty nice. read more

I visit other SPCAs all the time and the facilities do not smell. Don't even bother with the vet center. They are rude and never have appts. I've waited over two months to write this in hopes our experience would improve. It never did. I care for a feral cat colony and after we noticed a female was seriously injured, we caught her on a Monday night when all the local clinics were closed and asked Animal Services to help. They are contracted to take animals to the Brandywine Valley SPCA , our closest location being the New Castle campus. Before even doing an exam, they wanted to euthanize her. They claimed she bit a tech, which always confused me because she is FERAL (which was clearly communicated) and needed to be handled using gloves and possibly a net. Her intake was done incorrectly so it took almost a week to find out any information about her condition. Everyone I spoke with had no idea who or what I was talking about. I kept giving them the same information about her that I knew myself and they still got everything wrong. Finally they told me she was on a bite hold and would receive no medical care other than pain meds in her food (that she was too scared to eat initially) for 10 days, with an injury that would be about 5 weeks old at this point. I asked to come and get her so I could take her elsewhere and they said I legally couldn't. Everyone I called or spoke with sounded agitated and annoyed with me, kept telling me she was very aggressive and I might have to euthanize her, and it was suggested I take her elsewhere after her hold was up because she wasn't doing well in their shelter. She was scared and susceptible to shelter illnesses. Duh. Once her bite hold was up the vet agreed to see her and determined she would have to have her leg amputated. No surprise considering her injury. I explained repeatedly that I wanted to do everything to save her and socialize her for adoption. I would cover all expenses and claim all responsibility for her. REPEATEDLY. A day after her amputation, we were able to take her home. We had to sign paperwork and pay a reclaiming fee for a cat we never gave up. I also signed paperwork about a potential rabies exposure quarantine for which they gave no instructions or details. I still have no idea what the parameters of this quarantine really are and the Dept. of Agriculture hasn't followed up with us either. We waited almost an hour for someone to bring her to us in a cardboard carrier AND they said they had no idea where our very expensive backpack carrier and cover were (worth $200 total). All of her pain meds were measured sloppily and we weren't given nearly enough but I was just grateful to be done and have her home with us. About five weeks after she was home recovering, I noticed her mobility began to decline and she wasn't feeling well. I tried for three weeks to get in touch with their clinic for help, even begged someone in an email. I was given one sentence responses with no real information or empathy. The clinic said I had to go through the shelter and the shelter said I had to contact the clinic. Then I was told the clinic director would help me personally get her on the schedule. Never got a single follow up call or email. I finally found another vet who would help me treat her. She is suffering from a systemic infection that is now in her remaining joints from her initial injury. Although the single antibiotic shot she was given by the SPCA is usually standard practice, she should have been treated with stronger antibiotics to begin with given the severity and duration of her open wound before she was finally caught and treated. She allowed the vet today to handle her with no problems whatsoever. No gloves, no biting, no aggression. She purrs when you rub her cheeks and loves tiki tube treats. This single cat is worth saving. She is not an inconvenience or a burden and neither are the humans who care for her and the rest of her colony. I was treated like crap for doing the one thing I thought we all agreed to do - help animals. I wouldn't recommend that anyone take their animals to the BVSPCA if they can find literally anywhere else to go. Our options were extremely limited and I'm sorry I ever had to deal with them. Frustrated. Did not find "Putting The Human Back In Humane" with the care of our adopted dog. We adopted "Allie" a little over a year ago from the Georgetown location and recently took her in for a yearly checkup at their center in New Castle. To my surprise a " Heart Warm" test was not a part of their annual checkup and now having a need for heart warm monthly pills which require a prescription, we had to bring her back in for blood work at which time they would know if she can be giving the prescription or/not. At any rate when her turn came she was "dragged" back by her leash to the exam room. Few minutes went by, and the tech returned with her with two bottles of pills for relaxing Allie wanting us to return at another scheduled time. The tech advised she had bitten her, in which I apologized, and asked if she had her in a muzzle of which she said yes. I told her this wouldn't have happened if I were in there with her as we were just there a few months ago with her annual and the vet had no muzzle and poked around Allie and even gave her shots with no problem. Long story shorter, Allie is a 6-year-old (approx.) mix bread stray that was never spayed or micro chipped and came to us with no hair on her back, chronic sneezing and a fear of abandonment and being beaten. It took us 2-3 months to get her from ears back and tail between her legs to where she is now 'Ms Happy" and the most obedient dog I have ever had. Before we can make the claim of "Putting The Human Back In Humane" we need to remember they have feeling and emotions that can run deep as us humans and sometimes need to be treated accordingly. As a 4-year volunteer, wife 5 years, at another animal shelter in Wilmington, I have a GREAT respect for people who care for our strays and abandoned animals, and we can at times get lost in our day-to-day activities and lose our sensitivities of what drew us there in the first place. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would but I can't so I'll give it one star. This place is horrible. Y'all gave my mom two kittens for $400 and all of these been doing is getting sicker and sicker by the day because the medicine y'all gave us isn't working and the cats have ringworms that spread to me so now I have to deal with this ringworm on my body that I have to go to the doctor and get rid of. Why would you give anyone to kittens if you're not going to make sure that there's nothing wrong with the kittens first ever since we got them first there was something wrong with the eye, then there was something wrong with the ears then there's something wrong with their whole body it's ridiculous. I want a refund or something give me something because I don't wanna deal with it. Y'all should've done your jobs. Whoever is in charge of the people working here needs to be fired because the manager the boss of whatever whoever's in charge isn't doing a good job of making sure that the workers here are doing their job right so now because of this boss or manager who's not doing their job right there's workers out here getting paid for doing nothing and these kittens have diseases and problems and issues with them and you'll get all these kittens to families. What if I was a newborn I could be dead right now all because a y'all because y'all workers don't want to do your job that's ridiculous. Now I have to go to the doctor.. I don't have a job right now but I'm sure if I worked at the Brandywine SPCA I would be making sure that whatever cat is in need get what it needs and I will make sure that every single card that I come in contact with, doesn't have any diseases because nobody got time for diseases diseases, kill people, and animals. You'll need to do your jobs before you get fired and I swear to god if I come up in there and y'all don't, take care of these kittens I'm a lose my mind. The animals and their deserve so much better and so do the families who adopted an animal from that place into their family. read more

My sister found a kitten and called the Brandywine spca. They asked her to foster it since he was only 3 weeks. We feel in love with him and wanted to find him a good home. Neither one of us could keep him since we already have 3 cats each. My friend and her boyfriend feel in love with the kitten. We shared photos over the next month until he was old enough to be fixed. My sister told the spca that she had someone who wanted to adopt the kitten after he was fixed. They told her that was fine as long as they paid the $150 adoption fee. My friends were fine with that. On Wednesday my mom dropped the kitten (they named "Tofu") off at Brandywine. My mom left them with the name and phone number of the people who were going to adopt him. They told my mom he would most likely be fixed on Thursday and available for pick up on Friday(today). My friends waited patiently for your call. On Friday after not hearing anything, they called several times and left several messages. They finally spoke to a guy named Tom. He originally told them no information was left so they adopted the cat to someone else. Then he said that they did have his number and tried to call him several times with no answer so they adopted out the cat. Either answer is not true. They've been waiting by the phone for the past 2 days with no phone call. Both my mom and sister gave you their contact information. They already bought a bed, carrying case, toys, food, litter box, etc. we've been sharing photos with them for weeks. They've fallen in love with this kitten and are heart broken! If they would have been told there would be a chance this kitten would be given to someone else, then they would have taken him directly from my sister and gotten him fixed themselves. This is completely unprofessional! I've been calling every number I can find online. I keep getting voicemail. No one had called me back. Can someone please help? read more

If you think the staff in person is rude try calling them!!! You will be on hold for maybe 15 min and told to leave a message!! Older woman at the front Desk has something against helping younger people giving dirty looks and ignoring completely. Some employees will look at you and pick up the phone real quick so they don't have to interact with you. I donate to them all the time and still never get any respect since I'm young. i visited the adoption event this past weekend and upon looking at dogs, met an adorable, absolute love of a pup. her info on the kennel said she was under 25lbs but I was skeptical. the volunteers assured me she was that weight, and I made sure to inform them that I had a weight restriction at my complex. I also informed them that I had to get her approved with my complex, to which the volunteer stated...well take her and if they don't approve you have 14 days to bring her back. what!? how could that be good for the dog?! well I did take her trusting she was 25lbs. my complex requires photo and vet records for approval. the vet records from the shelter stated she was just over 35lbs. this dog was also skin and bones. you could see her hips, spine and ribs. not just feel them. she would need at least 5 to 10lbs. the volunteer guesstimated she was a catahoula leopard mix based on appearance and they should at least be 40-45lbs on the small side and are not suited for apartment living. all this to say the dog was not approved. after 4 days I had to return this baby. I went in crying and feel absolutely awful. this poor dog now is being returned to a shelter that didn't actually take care to listen to needs and requirements through no fault of her own. how can an SPCA run this way? luckily I had a friend with me at the time who can vouch for this experience. read more

Went for a euthanasia..They reached back very quickly, I really felt as if the girl on the phone truly cared... She got me an appointment a day later. The day came and the lady at the desk had such a kind calming demeanor (sorry I didn't get your name but you were amazing that day and it was really appreciated) she helped us to the room where we met another amazing worker with beautiful rainbow hair.. she too was such an angel on a terrible day .. made the experience as pleasant as possible.. but here is where something odd happened, the head vet I believe came and gave us a break down of what was to happen. After she gave my baby the first shot she made a comment as if my dying dog was annoying her.. at the time I was a little taken back by it but thought maybe I was over reacting since emotions were high, but when I got home and my family asked how it went, I told them what had happened and they couldn't believe it. I understand she may have to do this daily and has to wear thick skin, but as the pet parent - we don't... I just felt that it was very inappropriate and maybe she should do some sensitivity courses ... Girls you all were so great .. I am so grateful to have shared my day with such a kind bunch.. you both were very professional and sympathetic and it didn't go unnoticed.. I am truly thankful it was needed . The one animal caretaker named Rebecca repeatedly threatened people and even got into an altercation in there parking lot and still continues to work for the establishment. I absolutely loved my job but at the new castle SPCA it's all about who you're friends with. They don't care about the animals, in the mornings when we would run the dogs, the girl Rebecca came in every morning late with a terrible attitude and clearly took it out on the dogs but management never did anything even after being told about this girl numerous times. Loved the job itself but the girl Rebecca made it such a toxic work environment for everyone! read more

My first few experience with this location were pretty good. But I'm honestly not sure if I will return to this location . The person I spoke to on the hospital side was beyond rude and just lacked customer service. This location rarely ever answers the phone and they are using this app that too this moment they know isn't reliable. Both times I visited, the front desk staff greeted us by pretending we didn't exist. Talk about poor customer service. When we walked into the cat room, the supervisor yelled at us to sanitize our hands before and after touching or even looking at a cat. The cats were cute and we enjoyed petting some of them. But the experience was less enjoyable with the supervisor watching us like hawks. And she kept yammering at her coworkers and other visitors. Turns out yelling is her normal.
