UPDATE: I talked with the manager of Brake Max, and he personally took care of everything for me, called me to make sure everything is working fine, and sincerly apologized for the issues I had before. The store employee I talked to at the beginning may not be good, but the store manager seems extremely dedicated to the satisfaction of his customers, and I would come back just because of him! ______________________________________________________________ They blatently lie to your face. I called this location asking for the MegaTron Plus battery, and they said that they had the MegaTron Plus for $139 installed. I take the car in, have them install it, pay them, and when I get home I look under the hood and they installed the inferior MegaTron, not the Plus version. I go back, tell them that they put in the wrong one, and they claim that this IS the MegaTron Plus. I show them that it isn't, and they admit it isn't. But then they claim that the batteries are the same, and the only difference is the warranty. So I tell them that the Plus has more cranking amps. They once again admit that it does. Two lies already. Falsely selling me a product. Finally they say they will order the true MegaTron Plus, and call me when it's in. A week passes (their estimated time), and no call. Two weeks later, I call them, and they say that Interstate doesn't have the MegaTron Plus in stock anywhere. The store manager was informed of the issue and said he will personally order the battery from Interstate and get it solved. Hopefully that works out well. read more

Used to go to the Pantano location all the time. Since Jamie retired have had 3 strikes so now we are out. I took my 1999 Suburban to the new Tanque Verde location when the engine temperature spiked. Was a half mile away so being the closest, I headed there. Was told upon pick up that I needed over $5000 in engine repairs so i should just go ahead and have them put in a new engine at $9000+. Took it to another mechanic, bill was $950. (oil cooler hoses were 1/4 the cost, etc., etc.) My daughter in law took her Toyota Sequoia to the Pantano location for a shimmy in the front end. Was quoted $4000+ in repairs. Took it elsewhere, $500 later, good as new. My son just took his Toyota 4runner to the Campbell/Broadway location for squeaky brakes. Brakes were re-done for about $500 after I reminded them that brakes were lifetime as the truck has always had the brakes done by Brakemax. Saved about $200 from what they first quoted. When my son drove home, every warning light started coming on. Took it back to them and they told him he needs about $2000 in repairs for various problems. We will be taking it elsewhere! read more

This location demonstrated customer service to the max. No pun intended. I needed a wheel bearing replaced on my 2003 Honda. Tim, the manager had quoted a price and stuck to it, even though he had to send the hub assembly out to a machine shop to remove the wheel bearing. I expected an extra charge, given the extra work required. Tim said that a quote is a quote and he was going to honor it. They replaced the wheel bearing and my car is fit for the long road trip I am taking. I would recommend Brake Max to anyone.. read more

The first time here did not turn out good. They replaced one of my windshield wipers and the next day when I tried them, the one they replaced came up a little bit and then not at all. When I brought my car back and asked them to check it they charged me $100 to tell me it would cost $500 to replace the motor!! read more

I dealt with Charlie and Chuck. There was a lot of work done on my SUV. Took 10 days. A week later I took it on the freeway to find my cruise control was no longer working. I called them and they couldn't get to it for 3 days. I actually fixed it myself the next day(a simple fix). Other than that, I feel Very satisfied of the work done. Nice people too. read more

Unauthorized, unneeded charges and incompetant workmanship. I brought the car to brakemax on 8/12 for a strange noise, oil light and temperature increase when turning on a/c and fan with loss of power. Also mentioned leaking under car and needing trunk latch replaced and check the brakes for a squealing noise. Was told it would be a lot of money, so put $2000 by visa credit card down payment on 8/13, which was foolish but they asked for at least $1000. No written estimate was given, so they fixed what was deemed necc by them stating it was the bearings and bad oil leaks. The whole a/c was replaced, all oil leaks were sealed, water pump and parts for radiator plus vbelt and serpentine belt were replaced. Trunk latch and brake services were also done. Btw, the latch is hard to close and quickly swings open, so you have to watch your head that you don't hit it! The remaining amount paid on 8/16 was 217.41 by visa again when the car was released. For the next few days, the car transmission jerked/slipped and didn't before going into brake max. There was NO FLUID on the indicator in the transmission. I had to put 2 quarts in. It could've caused transmission failure. A couple of days later, the car chirped like crickets in the engine everyday. The car was taken back about 2-3weeks later to have the noise stopped and when mentioning the lack of transmission fluid, they said the car takes 17 qts of fluid(why was there nothing on the indicator until I put in 2qts? They obviously never checked it along with other leaks, but all fluids should've been checked while checking for leaks. Also mentioned the car was still slow, especially when turning a/c and fan on. They had to keep the car over 3hrs and tightened the belt(the one that looks used) and wanted the car longer for the issue of loss of power. They said it may be the fuel regulator leaking(which leaves small spots on ground) but wanted to charge for this! Since about 10/1, everytime the car is started, it squeals for 5-10 minutes and then stops and the gauge for temp goes high and then drops suddenly, randomly(like the temp gauge is defective) even though the oil and coolant are at correct level. This shouldn't be happening! Brake max services are overpriced, incompetant and some are done unneccessarily. The age of the car is irrelevant. For the price I paid, there should be no increase in temperature, no loss of power, no leaks an especially NO NOISE. Those were the main issues in the beginning. So, I filed with he BBB. This is what I asked for: Resolution: I want refund back to my credit card for half of the money paid for the mental anxiety for the half **s job. I want refund back to my credit card for half of the money paid for the mental anxiety and half incomplete job done on the car or I want another repair shop to diagnose the problems(maybe even a different brake max if neccessary) and brake max to cover the cost from the money I paid them to fix the issues described. I gave them the opportunity to fix what they didn't do correctly the first time for a second time and don't want them to keep the car any more. It has been an inconvenience and very costly. If I'd know about all of this trouble, I would've bought another used car or put money down on a new one. read more

Finding somebody to do work on your car SUCKS. Historically, most places I've taken my car to have been relatively unimpressionable. With a used car that needed to have its cylinder head replaced within two years of me owning it, I'm surprised it's moving at all. That aside, most places have been laughably beyond my pay grade or completely unabashedly horrendous (see review for Pep Boys). I think it means something that I returned here after at least a year or so of not. The reality of my experience here is that I feel like the work they do is good. I don't have the qualifications to judge, but have noticed my car to be running better than it did when I took it there. Here's a quick summary for your quick review: WHAT I LIKED: - I feel with confidence, that my car runs better - Previously, when my car's check engine popped on after receiving service, they took my car back immediately and got it looked at. I should note that it was just my gas cap. - They know and reference work previously done to my car, without me prompting them to look it up. They were able to tell what was recommended during my last trip. - Relatively low pressure on what to repair/not to repair. An employee sat with me and explained each point with me. He didn't insist certain work was done and assured me that my car would not blow up if I didn't do it. - I didn't feel like a hassle when I asked questions about what certain repairs would do to help my car's performance. - I feel like this place runs in the average price range. - I imagine if you take care of your car, your stay and maintenance oil-changes are probably a more pleasant experience than mine. - There is a shuttle that could take you somewhere if you know you have a lot of time to kill - Location is pretty decent if you want to walk over and do some browsing at Best Buy, eat lunch, or whatever WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IMPROVED: - A little more human touch would be nice. I liked that somebody sat with me to talk with me, but felt that if they knew my work would take more than 2+ hours, I should have known about it so I could walk home (which is close) or do errands. I'm normally willing to wait, but felt my day could have been better spent elsewhere than waiting for four hours. Could I have asked? Probably. I didn't ask because I took my car in for an oil change after scheduling an appointment. Popping your head in to say "this will take a while to do a full assessment of your car" would have been much appreciated. - Car repairs suck. Although I felt no pressure to do all repairs, know that it's completely overwhelming to see how much this dumb moving machine could cost you. Offering financing options through a credit card felt more like a business move than a good customer service one. Before the yelp-active business manager responds, know that I do not give out 5 stars like candy. Three stars means I'll probably come back and is labeled in yelp as "A-OK." I have been a customer at Brakemax since I moved here in 2016. I have taken multiple vehicle there to get fix. I have had good service in the past. November of 2019, I took my Dodge Journey to get fixed after noticing the Check Engine light come on. They fixed a over heating problem, by replacing the thermostat, system diagnostic and doing a cooling system flush. It was closer too 600.00.Now in December 2019 about three weeks later my Check Engine Light came on and my head gasket started to leak. I took it back to Breakmax and they told me that it needed a head-gasket what i paid over 2000.00. I trusted what they said and had them fix my vehicle, knowing they are the experts. After that the Check Engine light came on a gain. This time they replaced the variable timing solenoid. after driving it about less then 50 miles the check engine light came on again. This time i had the converter replaced. The check engine light was off but only for about 50 miles and it came back on. I took it back to BreakMax and they said i need to take the Journey to Larry H Miller and and there i Paid 130 for update on the computer. The check engine was off again less then 20 miles later it came back on. I took it back to BreakMax. This time they took it back to Larry H Miller and they worked on the vehicle. They spent a little over 800.00. i was finally able to pick my vehicle up 30 March 2020,and there they said it need a new engine. after about 20 miles the check engine light cam back on. A day after picking up the vehicle, I called the Green Valley BreakMax and they told me they had to wait for the regional manger Dave to tell them what could be done. I called the regional manager Dave and left a message for him to call back and he has not done as of yet. BreakMax said they could deduct 1200 off the cost of a new engine and i pay for the rest of engine that could cost over 4000.00. I went to the regional office to talk to Dave and also asked him why they are only going to give me credit of 1200,and i would need to come up with over three grand to fix it. Still after three weeks there is no call from the regional Manger.I have a vehicle that has a check engine light on and that i can get license due to the check engine light being on. I had a tune up done here in 2013 including new spark plugs. I then hit the road driving from Tucson to Albuquerque. The check engine light came on when I was in the middle of nowhere late at night. With not many options, I decided to slowly get the car to my destination. The mechanic I saw in ABQ said whoever just did the sparkplugs did not replace the wires causing the knock sensor to go out. I was two days late back to work and another $370 in the whole. In response to Jeffrey G: no the failure was not 2 years later. It was within hours of the service i had done! Also, why as professional mechanics would you not tell me the wires were extra?! If i had known how important, I would have gladly paid rather then have a major failure. read more

I had the worst customer service experience at the Brake Max located on Camp Lowell and Swan, and they damaged the backing plate and rotor on my front passenger side axle when they were replacing a torn boot. On Saturday 4/6 I took my car in for an oil change and inspection. When they called me back, one of the additional recommendations the technician had for me was to replace the torn boot, which I approved. The staff member hung up without providing the quote I requested and I had to call back to get it.In the afternoon I was told that there had been a complication with removing the boot and they'd need to keep my car until Monday. I stated that I needed my car and I needed to know how this was going to impact the price. The staff member could not tell me anything about how this would affect the price and even stated that this was a really difficult situation because "this obviously wasn't your fault, but it wasn't really our (BrakeMax's) fault either. Things like this can just happen." The staff member and I go around in circles for a few minutes about me needing a car and a new estimate for additional costs. I finally ask for the manager and the staff member asked me "why?" and if there's something he's not helping me with. I repeat that I need an estimate and a car for the week ahead. The staff member says he'll talk to the manager and call me back and then hangs up. Annoyed, my partner and I head over the store in person and ask to speak with the manager. When the manager comes out, I outline the problem and he led us into the back to show us my car and the mangled axle on the shop floor. He let us know the staff have been trying for several hours to get the axle out of the spindle and it's now jammed. They can't put the parts back on my car as they are damaged so they'll have to keep my car through Monday to get new parts. The manager can't give us an estimate until he knows what parts are available and can't even tell us if this will affect the price at all. He stated he'd try to keep the total as close to the original estimate as possible. I ask if they can cover a rental and the manager agrees, gives us the account information and lets us know we'll have to go out to the Airport as all other locations are closed until Monday morning. This turned out to be inaccurate and we end up having to drive across town twice to get a car. Worse, the Camp Lowell and Swan location wasn't setup in their system to be billed for rentals. The enterprise staff member was amazing and agreed to set the rental up as a pending charge and they'll contact the manager on Monday to set up the billing, since BrakeMax is closed on Sunday. On Monday I wait until noon to hear from BrakeMax and when I don't hear anything, I call them. The manager confirms that they found the part they need and will be able to fix my car, but I still can't get an estimate. They'll call me once they have the part and know if it'll work. I call back at 3 because I haven't heard anything and the car is completed and out for a test drive. The manager agreed not to charge me for the parts and my car would be available at 5ish. After work I head over to pay and they did discount the parts, but still charged me for the labor. I was fine with that compromise so I paid and then dashed out to take the rental back because it had to be returned by 6. When I get back to my car, I start to drive out of the parking lot and the car is making an awful grating noise. BrakeMax is now closed, so I drive home and park it and call the Area Manager for the Camp Lowell and Swan location and leave a voicemail for him letting him know I have a complaint about work that was done on my car. I get another car rental (on my own) and give him the following day to get back to me. When he never calls me back, I call the Corporate Customer service line to place a complaint. I haven't heard back from anyone regarding my concerns. We ended up taking my car to an awesome mechanic. They confirmed that the backing plate and rotor on my front passenger side axle were damaged (the rotor had hammer marks on in that were so deep they could not be machined out) and it was going to be $472 to fix it. We voided the warranty on the original work BrakeMax did, but considering that there was additional obvious mechanical damage done to my car, who knows what would have happened next if I took my car back to be fixed! This will be the last time we will go to BrakeMax. We understand that things sometimes just go wrong when fixing a car. However, not keeping the customer in the loop to make decisions, not providing immediate solutions, being vague about options, and then sending us on a wild goose chase around town to get a rental car, only to end up with the car back and damaged? Totally unacceptable. read more

The guys here are usually pretty nice, but it always takes twice as long as they quote to get anything done. I go in for an oil change and they say it'll be done within an hour and it always ends up taking at least two hours. I went in today for an oil change and they never asked me what kind of oil I wanted, they took 2 1/2 hrs to get it done, it took them 20+ minutes just to put the cover back on my cabin air filter and at the end of it all they said I had a nail in my tire but did nothing to fix it or even asked if I wanted them to fix it. Instead, when I asked if they fixed the tire, they said no but I can come back tomorrow to get it fixed. Sorry, I'll be taking my car somewhere else. read more

We were on vacation when our Expedition began dreadfully squealing every time we hit the brakes. I took it in to Tim at BRAKEMax and within an hour they had our issue diagnosed - no brake problems, just a lot of mud and gunk around the pads. Best part? No Charge!!! Thanks BRAKEmax!!! read more

Did not have a good experience here initially. Seemed to be overcharging me, but manger finally come through and made right.

Well I took for in for an oil change about a month ago. At the time of pick-up they mentioned that my back shocks were leaking oil. Ok fair enough. Well two weeks ago I replaced the brakes on my truck, the fronts were ok, but the back ones were another story. When I pulled the rotor off the back right wheel it was covered in brake fluid, I freaked out. I took my truck to the dealership since it has a warranty on major items like this. I thought leaking back axel seal. They pulled the wheel apart and found no leaks. Well can I say that Brake shot brake fluid in there no, but how else could it have gotten all that fluid in there. As for the shocks, I cleaned and hand washed them, two weeks later no leaks. I will not be going back to this location just got a bad feeling about them. Go to the one on Kolb and Golf Links, honest guys there. read more

asked them to make me a new brake line. told them i would bring the parts with the proper bends and they told me they dont know how to do that and dont have the tool. told me to call 2 other brake maxs both of which said the same and sounded confused how to do so. i thought they do brakes since its in their name. oh well, went to harbor freight bought the tool for 20 bucks and did it myself. read more

My name is George G. and this past April had the unfortunate experience of becoming one of their customers for a brake job . Against the advice of my friend who also had a bad experience with them, I went to have the front breaks replaced with a 79.95 coupon in my hand. After checking my car out, the service representative indicated that, it will run around 350 dollars to do my break job. To which I replied that I want the 79.95 special that is advertised. After some discussion, he agreed to have the work done. They turned the rotors and put on new discs and 2 hours later I paid my bill of 93.04 and left the shop. About 2 weeks later and around 500 miles since the break job, I started getting vibration when I applied the brakes, indicative of the rotor warping. The condition kept getting worse and with another 500 miles on the brakes, I went to one of their other shops only to be told by the service rep, that I had inferior rotors and should have had the 139.99 rotors installed. When I asked him, if they advertise and install inferior rotors, he replied: INFERRIOR yes! So, if you desire INFERIOR rotors, go to Break Max, otherwise go anywhere else. read more

Avoid this shop at all cost...Just had a very bad similar experience. They will misdiagnose your car, overestimate the bill, find any way to RIP YOU OFF, have terrible customer service relation, and give you the run around. Brought the car in because of shaking issue and ac not working. Was given the diagnosis of misfire and a part of the air conditioner was broken. They had to order the part for the air conditioner but they could fix the shaking issue. First estimate 600 dollars, but suddenly, there are other things wrong with the car...you must pay 1300 dollars up front. Pick up the car, and IT STILL SHAKES....bring it back the day the part comes in to fix the AC and they change the part, but AC still doesn't work. They replace a part on the car that stops the shake, but they say...that is not the real problem that caused the shake...those are the mounts...but to fix the real problem...that'll cost you an additional 660 dollars. Oh and by the way, that part we ordered to fix your air conditioner? That's not the real problem, the real problem is the compressor, that'll be an additional 900 dollars if you want that repaired. Oh you were quoted that rate by another service manager...I would have told you the real problem...sorry..he is not here.. Then you get their paperwork...charges on there for services that make no sense...if you knew your air conditioner doesn't work....why are you being charged for freon and recharging...oh and window wipers were replaced...not....oh and oil change, fuel cleaner...really? But, hey...you were charged fairly for all this work that was done...that didn't even address your real problem... People, figure it out....don't get ripped off...They must think the general public are morons...Tell your friends and spread the word...avoid this place at all cost... read more

I last came here in 2012 to restore an old-used car i had purchased. Their employees are paid on commission (info as of 2012). They've leave dirty smudges on the inside of my car, specifically the door handles & shift knob, after servicing my car. Though they have better equipment for flushing transmissions than the Brake Max on Magee & Oracle. One of their employees (who i think no longer works there) even persuaded me to overfill my tires psi by 5 psi claiming that i'd receive better performance. And i did it, not knowing that overfilling causes uneven treadwear and an increased risk of a blowout which i eventually did have. Last but not least, they over-charge. Brake Masters & Edmund's Automotive charge less and aren't paid on commission. Edmund's Automotive charges the least. Especially for simple things like an oil charge. Other than mentioned, the only other places i've been to in town are: Sears, the dealer, and Econolube. Econolube is the worst. The dealer is expensive & they use low-quality oil & air filters. Sears checked my battery for free,...great experience. A dedicated transmission specialist shop, enough said. A dedicated muffler/exhaust specialist shop, enough said. Brake Max may be a locally-owned business but that alone doesn't mean they are to be trusted over other automotive businesses/shops. How you trust mechanics is: how much experience they have, how they're paid, training & certifications, their business practices, research, & common sense. BBB doesn't necessarily mean they're to be trusted. read more

Spent 1400 on brakes and ac to be fixed. They replaced the compressor and other things. Ac still did not work right. Took it somewhere else without telling them what had been fixed. they said that the compressor was replaced but nothin be else was done. He explained that there are other things like valves and other stuff I didn't understand but just maintenance that goes with replacing the compressor that is suppose to be done when a compressor is replaced. He warned me that places like this intentionally do stuff like this so you have to keep coming back. I understand he is in the business as well but hey he fixed it and it's working now. On the Golflinks/Kolb store: My 81 year old mother recently took her car in for an oil change and look over, when she mentioned it, I took a look, it only had about 1600 miles on the oil, checked all the fluids (all full and clean), checked her parking spot, no leaks or anything showing. So thought, sure, if she wants to, no problems. She takes it in the next day, then when I get home that afternoon, she's all upset. Turns out they tell her there's a leak (??? Odd that ALL fluid levels were fine), and it HAS to be fixed. She said they offered to show her, which she basically waved off as she doesn't know cars at all. Then she asks 'Hoe much?' and get's told 'about $1,000', which upset her even more, (one would think, that if someone was upset about the total cost of the guesstimate, that, if ethical, they would look to remove items that weren't essential work) but said 'It's been a good car, if it HAS to be done, it has to be done' and pulls out her checkbook. (and again, obviously the tranny work and fuel system work DIDN't HAVE TO BE DONE) Then apparently they gave her a ride home for while they fixed the leak. Came picked her up, again out comes the checkbook and they are telling her, 'No put that away' and start talking up some credit card that will give 6 months 'free' financing, she want to write a check (and yes it's easily good), but no they keep talking up this credit card thing, so she basically gives in, telling me they wouldn't let up. I go to look at the invoice, and see they have done the oil change, replaced the Rack and pinion, but then it gets interesting. Apparently they decide that while doing the rack and pinion they also need to flush the power steering system (apparently can't just replace fluid that might be lost (so almost an additional $60), they also played with the fuel system (which had no problems at all), treatment chemical kit, rail treatment, cleaner, service, etc ($134), and replaced the transmission filter and gasket (yes and flush the system) to a tune of $300. Again, the extra charges for 'flushing' are just typical add ons, the tranning could simply be refilled after changing the filter and gasket) I've since emailed them about this, so there would be a written record and asked a number of questions about all this, most of the questions have been ignored. In particular, this fuel service junk. ON the transmission, was informed they had been recommending this for 2 years now (and notably A) we have declined, the car is near 12 years old, total 54,000 miles, the car's manual 'suggest' changing gasket and filter, only under extreme use, none of the conditions she really meets, the car is seldom driven, doesn't tow anything, little to know heavy city driving, not during the heat of the day, etc. And actually it was brought up closer to 3 years ago, by the previous manager who had said it wasn't really needed, maybe at 100,000 miles. The current manager initially stated that the tranny flush is recommended at 50,000. Then later after the manual was quoted to him. Then comes back in another response and says it's recommended anytime the temp exceeds 92 degrees. No comment offered on the fact it had been declined previously 2-3 times, no responses to other questions, etc. Also a note on this 'credit card company, supposedly this card is to come with a $50 Visa card for opening the account (my mother told me they said a $100 card, which of course hasn't been forthcoming. The issued a card within days, and sent an initial bill that CLOSED 9 days after the work was done and gave a billing period that supposedly started appr 3 weeks before she even opened the account. The company has numerous complaints on the internet about it's practices.. When I initially emailed the store - I was also very specific to ask for a response via email, so there would be no he said/she said, also knowing how upset my Mom was about all this and getting ripped off, I didn't want her to have to deal with these people. And, of course, the very next morning this manager calls my Mom...on the phone. This upset her even more (gee thanks Brake Max - get a SPECIFIC request and totally ignore it), anyway, she informed him to never call again, that she wouldn't be back and then hung up on him. So they stuck her for over $430 of unneeded work (which she wasn't aware of) not to mention the failure to produce the $100 (or $50 as they claim now) gift card....and I still have strong doubts about his so called leak that resulted in the rest of the charges (other than the oil change), since as mentioned the fluid level was good. So beware of using this place, am filing a complaint with the BBB also and reporting this on consumer complaint sites. read more

I took my car to brake max in the past one and a half years for oil change and regular maintenance. However, I decided to skip brake max from now on. The last time when we visited brake max, we told the guy there to help us check the air conditioning. First, they told us it was caused by the lack of refrigerant. When I asked them if they could diagnose whether there was leak in the system. They said they can not do it unless I bought the service including adding refrigerant and checking leak which cost more than 200 bucks . When I asked them if they can just add some refrigerant in the system directly, they said they can not do it because of some environment law restriction. When I decided to skip this 200 bucks device and leave the shop, another guy came and told me that he could do the adding refrigerant only. I accepted this option. However, they came back to me again very soon and told me that this time they found that my compressor was not working!! What a joke!! What were you guys doing during the first turn of checking?? At the same time, they told us they were quite sure of the new diagnose result and it cost more than 800 bucks to fix my compressor!!! I felt that I was fooled by the brake max and took my car out of the shop immediately. After the visiting of brake max, I took my car to jiffy lube for another air conditioning check. They told me directly my compressor was Ok and there was no leak in the system after some simple steps of check. I bought the air conditioning service cost 129 bucks and they fixed my air conditioning system. Just stay away from break max, you never know what they are doing behind the door!!! read more
