Well, that's not exactly true - I stayed because I didn't want to look like some freeloader crashing their party. But is exactly true that my desire to keep up appearances gave me more than ample time to peruse their wares. Ten Thousand Villages is located in an old 3-story house and has a great selection of jewellery, servingware, statues, and other home décor global treasures. They are also quick to refill the complimentary coffee pots, which is a bonus. I guess they care as much for their customers as they do for the native artisans that they represent. The coffee with a conscience being served up here is flavourful and fortunately available for purchase upstairs.

All that my gut was telling me when looking around was that most of what's there would be clutter in my house, which was a little disappointing. It would be cool and interesting clutter, but clutter nonetheless. The variety of products in this sizable store is impressive and they do sell tea, coffee, etc., but I would never make a special trip here just for that. Being that Christmas is coming, it's a good place to buy unique ornaments and stocking stuffers. My pipes are oiled, hemped, new blowstick, moisture trap, bag, reeds, they sound like a million bucks (or as close as my fumbling fingers can get). Bill and Jeanie both treat customers extremely well, very pleasant to talk to. And of course the location of the shop is a bit off the beaten track, but in a very stunning (and appropriate) setting that was really kind of a treat to visit once I was there. Now I pass here all the time, never in my wildest dreams did I expect what I saw inside; we are talking first of all an incredibly large store that descends for eternity to the back and is just plain lovely!! My friend wasn't exaggerating, every showcase, every shelf; every glassed cabinet was chockfull of lovely designer jewellery in the most spectacular designs. Here they carry some of the same designers as they do in Holt Renfrew but for a lot cheaper prices. But it didn't stop at jewellery there were beautiful globes of blown glass, intricately carved chopping boards that I would have hung rather than use and then my favourite an ethnographic object showcase in the far back featuring ceremonial objects from around the world. Here you can find original African Masks, fertility symbols from many countries, Native American antique pieces and authentic temple Buddhas. These objects were definitely market prices, you can buy these pieces for 4 times more on EBay, and here they are quite reasonable in price. Some of them have documentation too, so you know what village or tribe you are buying that object from. The service is tremendous, the people here know their stuff, they understand the precious cargo they carry. They are extremely present in helping you to see a piece or two, in my case more than 10. I love this store, it is exquisite, some of the most unique items I have ever seen and jewellery with such spirit, you should check this store out.

Interesting people were out, cute dogs were being walked by their owners, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Part of my stroll was down the "hip" Uptown area of 17th Avenue. What drew me into Steeling Home from my walk was an on sale desk fan that was displayed outside on a cute antique table. The price was right, but I knew darn well that it would be hard to get it in the suitcase for my eventual trip back to the San Francisco Bay Area. I might still change my mind on that.... Anyway, I decided to stroll around inside and really enjoyed exploring the many pockets of interesting stuff this relatively small store holds. It has books, antiques, jewelery, and much more in-between. The people watching was fun too, with a fresh touch of Portlandia thrown in. I'm glad I stopped in and reminded myself that marching around a new City is fun, and stopping to explore some of its quirks is even better.
