Picked up some jasmine plants at a great price -- customer service was stellar and so friendly. I thought this place had a lot more charm than Squak Mt. Nursery, in Issaquah. I will definitely make the trek out here more often. Selection was very different than the surrounding areas. Check out their tropical area. read more

They clearly don't care about their customers. We went on Sunday at 11am. Their website said they were open. After parking and wandering around for 10 minutes finally found a sign on a door that said closed on Sunday. While we were there saw 4 other customers experience exactly the same thing. I tried to go to this nursery a year ago and the same thing happened. It is a big deal for me to find the time to go to a nursery so it just feels incredibly disrespectful when it would be so easy for them to update their website or at the very lest post a sign upfront so people aren't wandering around trying to figure out where to go only to find that they are closed. They must not need business. read more

This place is just a few blocks away from my house and I was very excited that I found lots of bamboo trees there for a very reasonable price. Besides three bamboo trees, o got an evergreen last summer. However, it died within less than 2 months and they did not want to give me either another tree but just half of the refund. I bet the tree was sick since the price was much cheaper than the other ones. I like to support local business but I will never buy anything from them anymore. read more

I want to understand Boxhill Farm. I've been coming here several times a season for the last couple years. I'm an avid gardener looking for rare plants, deals, etc and I hit virtually all nurseries in the Puget Sound area regularly. Boxhill is a weird place, full of contradiction, and perhaps I just need more backstory (or just need to accept it). For starters, don't expect a normal retail or business-driven experience as you would at say, a Seattle or Eastside nursery. In the many times I've visited, the vast majority of the time I am the only customer on-site. They tend to have an 'if no one is around, ring the bell' type sign up. Which is fine, they're busy doing other stuff and having someone sit at the front seems pointless. I also don't really need any help or advice for plant buying decisions. The weird part is that the nursery partially feels like a place time forgot. It's rather hidden and elusive, yet they keep up on specials, social media efforts, and the front sign by the road is obvious and inviting. Once you arrive and park though, it's like an adventure just knowing where to go or not go, what plants are for sale or not (generally nothing has a price tag), and are they open or not (I believe many signs/sources stated every day during the main season, but others say closed Tues/Wed, like Yelp/Google). The location is lovely, a converted farm with misc old buildings and residents. The greenhouse/retail section for tender/house plants is gorgeous and alone is worth a visit, it has incredible light and has that perfect instagram-looking level of roughness and charm. They stock a medium diversity of plants. During spring/summer you'll find a pretty fair mix of things, but they specialize in having bamboos apparently. My favorite is the stuff you'll find in the lower barn/greenhouse. They have huge specimens of camouflage fatsia, overflowing tongue ferns, and lots of other goodies. The main reason I come is that they propagate some 'rare' plants that I simply can't find at any other local nurseries. I won't say what.. :) Prices, once actually confirmed or charged, are good/reasonable or even a bargain. But another note on pricing and the weirdness is that it varies, a lot. I've bought the same plants several different times, through different people, and the price was wildly different. Maybe it was an error, maybe it was an unspoken sale, maybe they keep prices off stuff so they have the autonomy to haggle/discount at will, I have no idea. They also recently seemed to have stopped accepting (temporarily or permanently is unclear) debit and credit cards, only cash or check. Weird right? I had to forego purchases for a future trip with cash. There are more quirks, but you get the idea. Basically, go for the space and to find unexpected plants or deals. Try to get clarity on pricing. Bring cash just in case. And don't mind if you have to try and find someone who works there. (several people I've only seen once and then never again, which makes me wonder if they're having staffing issues). read more

I wavered between 3-4 stars on this one. Boxhill is the closest nursery to me, thus why I went there last summer to get some lilac plants for our yard. I called before I went and inquired if they had lilac plants, as it was August and not exactly lilac season. They had two and as luck would have it, that's exactly how many I needed! I asked about the price and was told each plant was $25. Sweet, good price! I went there to get said lilacs and when price got rang up, one plant was $35 and the other was $45. Why I was quoted $25 per plant on the phone, I don't know. I wanted the lilacs regardless, so even though I was annoyed by the rather significant price difference said on the phone I got the lilacs and took them home. The plants are beautiful! I have a history of being a plant killer so I was dubious of my gardening skills but I was taking a chance on these because lilacs have a reputation for being very hearty, hard to kill plants. They are currently starting to get flower buds on them so I know in a few short weeks I will be enjoying the awesome aroma of lilacs. Boxhill might have been weird about the price of these, but they did sell me great plants that I should be able to enjoy for years to come. read more

The nursery is beautiful, and the plants well tended but I found it to be disappointing. I was there in the middle of the day, middle of the week. A sign said we are open, ring the bell. It was quite some time before someone opened the door. I found plants and had to follow the voices to get someone to help me. The other customer the guy was working with was told, after I waited a while, "Let me go help THIS person", like I was being rude. I was obviously struggling carrying the plants. I got no help. When I was done being rung up I was told where the boxes were so I could pack my own stuff, then did not receive a thank you. It was a strange experience being the annoying customer. read more

We purchased 2 black bamboos from them in 2016. We also purchased 2 crocked yellow bamboos from a man in North Seattle. They were both planted in identical separate stainless troughs, same soil, and placed in close proximity in our back yard. Our yellow bamboo flourished while the box hill farm bamboo died. They were cared for the same. We were told by both places to treat them the same, same fertilizer, etc. Noticing that the Box Hill bamboo was struggling we decided to call box hill for advice. We even emailed pictures. The "owner" was suppose to contact us. The owner never did and simply made assumptions as to why we were calling ($$) We never once mentioned money, just want to have the bamboo healthy and growing. We called back after no response and the person answering the phone seemed surprised the "owner" didn't call back and then put us on hold and came back on and said that if we dig it up and bring it in, they will let us buy one more and give us two.... but we should know that's "generous" because once the product leaves their farm, their responsibility is over. So now we have to dig this up, put it in my SUV drive over and waste about 3 gallons of gas. Methinks not! We sent them pictures, that should be enough. Buyer beware, out of the mouth of the owner, "Once it leaves the farm, Box Hill has NO responsibility." Also, I should note, there were a tremendous amount of bugs on the bamboo when we bought it a year ago, realizing it once we drove away. luckily we didn't have to bug bomb our vehicle after transporting. Maybe that was the problem with the bamboo. Gross. Here's some free advice to owner. 1) don't assume. It's not about the money for us. It's about trying to save the bamboo. Sending pictures to an "expert" for help, he just made his assumption and seems to not care. 2) TALK to your customers, especially when they call you. You are running a business that relies on customers. We cannot recommend this place. read more

Boxhill farms is more of a park . . . That is also a quality nursery. It's not like an in-city, corporate type, nursery; they don't 'stack-em high and sell-em cheap' like the roadside country nurseries. They have interesting landscape, quality nursery stock, and knowledgable and helpful staff. About once a month my wife and I get coffee at the Starbucks right across the street and go walk around the nusery. It's always changing; different plants in bloom, new items coming in, interesting things to see. We inevitably wind up buying something new. My view is that plants are generally cheap. Boxhill Farms pricing is reasonable; we don't feel like we pay too much more or less than other places, but the opportunity to see our plants in a landscape helps us to make better choices. I wouldn't say we buy all our plants at Boxhill Farms, however we rarely add something new to our garden without visiting there first. We are looking forward to walking the nursery in the fall as the colors change. read more

I spent $600 on 9 large boxwoods here, they were infected and root bound and turned brown within 2-3 months and the nursery was at first responsive then stopped communicating. I am an experienced gardener and they were very carefully planted, fed, watered, and all my other boxwoods in the same areas were very healthy with lots of growth the same season. The ones from boxhill came up with leaf miner right away - i didnt know what it was at first so i may have missed it when purchasing. I also chose the largest specimens on purchasing, without looking inside the pots - another mistake. However, a professional nursery should know better than to sell plants that are so root bound there is almost no soil left in the pot when the plant comes out! The other mistake I made was coming back here in the first place - the other plants I've purchased frmo them in the past have died too, but I thought they had such an awesome selection of boxwoods and it seemed to be their specialty. I thought it was transplanting shock when they turned yellow and reddish, but after 6 months with no sign of recovery despite meticulous care I realized they were just cruddy plants unprepared for movement. I contacted Box hill, they offered replacement or refund, and when I sent them the photos along with photos of my uninfected vigorous boxwoods from other sources, they agreed that they 'looked terrible' and would check their stock and get back to me or come look and give suggestions. they never got back to me, and never responded to my further numerous emails or phone. calls. I have been extremely polite in my requests for help, rudeness gets you nowhere, and I have given them 3 months to respond before posting this review. Last summer I also asked them twice to research getting in some particular plants for me, and at first they were enthusiastic then completely failed to communicate or respond as to whether it was a possiblity. read more
