Root Connection CSA - Picking squash in the u-pick lot!

We just joined Root Connection and couldn't be happier. It's an amazing place to take kiddos (they…read moreeven have their own u-pick lots!) to see how veggies are grown, there are even chicken that kids can feed. The veggies themselves are super fresh and it's a great variety. We've definitely had more variety when we were in CA since it's bigger farms but we still walked away with chard, Tokyo Bekana, 2 types of lettuce, delicious beets, herbs and more. Super happy to have access to the fresh veggies for the remainder of the season and having it be an interactive family outing and learning for our 2.5yo daughter. Stephanie and Claire are amazing and have such great customer service. Due to the heatwave we brought our fruit from the Redmond market in and in our rush, we forgot it there and by the time we got back, someone took it on accident. Stephanie called all the members with fruit pickups to see who mistakenly took it. To our surprise they found the person the day later and we're getting our fruit! (Was super sad since I couldn't find cherries and stone fruit of the same caliber at PCC yesterday).

I'm a firm believer that picking a tree is an event and you should never be afraid to venture outside your own neighborhood to get one! I have 2 rules: the tree MUST be real and MUST be from Washington state. So over the river (err... 520 bridge) and through the woods we go to The Gardens at Cottage Creek in Woodinville. It's on the corner of Avondale and NE 132nd St. We were greeted by the owner who is a tall lovely man with a quick smile and baby blue eyes that you could swim in. His dog is pretty cute too! He took the time to show us many, many trees and laid the keepers down so we could narrow our choices. Once we cruised the lot we went back and made our selections. The nursery also had wreaths and a small Fall/Winter plant selection. I've been here in the Spring/Summer and it is full of gorgeous plants and flowers. The hanging baskets are some of the best I have ever seen. I have it on good authority that the owner knows his plants and stocks quality merchandise (read: won't die next week). Seriously go bend his ear and buy some stuff! Now I'm going to go smell the piney goodness of my tree, water it and gaze upon it lovingly. It's not weird or anything.

This nursery is closed. You'll see that the last written review for trees was 2008. Just another case of Yelp not being up to date and confusing one business with another.

I picked the sod I needed (they had two options) and also purchased the lawn signs, fertilizer and sod spades. Never having done it before, I relied heavily on my partner to assist in laying it. The sod arrived in the daytime when I was not there but it was dropped off on the curb with my father. Originally I had requested a different drop off time, and the company was very quick to respond about there own internal delivery details. I was very satisfied with the company response time and in how nice they were at explaining the details. The sod arrived about 45 minutes prior to the scheduled drop off time, which was great. If you were going to use a crew this would be IDEAL for an early drop off. When I got home to sod was still fresh and moist. I was surprised the sod still looked so fresh after sitting on my cement for a few hours at over 100 degrees. We picked a darn hot day to do this project! They were also very nice in dropping off a sod laying 'how to' sheet which listed some do's and don'ts. For us first timers, this was a great read. They also leave instructions on watering and maintaining the lawn. Read them! It was helpful for us and I think made our project a success. After a few weeks the grass has taken WONDERFULLY. We noticed mushrooms growing in various patches, which is a good sign of deep roots on a lawn. Some of the other reviews mentioned dead lawn or bugs, we did not have anything but a GREAT experience. We actually need a little more sod to finish the project, and you better believe I will call JB Instant Lawn!

It hasn't even been two years, the lawn is withered, sparce and horrible. I made sure all the proper prep and fertilizations were done correctly. It's the product. Last visit I had, the self checkout person was being sassy for no reason. I did not ask for help and was taking my time and behind me I hear her loudly tell me "press check out"...." press card" and more. You could tell she hates her job and just wants to treat people like they are stupid or something. It was weird. I just ignored her and never turned around to look at her as not to give her bad attitude any attention. When leaving I saw she had brown hair with a long ponytail over 30. I really don't understand the micromanaging and taunting of customers here. Her behavior was off putting. Maybe avoid her at all costs if you run into this person or hopefully they put her somewhere not around customers as she can't handle it and this is coming from someone who worked customer service for years. Maybe some staff needs re training on customer service and friendliness? I would return when looking for a specific item but because some staff are rude I definitely will avoid the staff.

And props to their app--the store locator feature is like having GPS for your DIY ambitions. Now, asking for help? Total roulette. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and get someone who clearly used to be a contractor and can MacGyver their way through anything. Other times, it's a deer-in-headlights newbie, or--if the universe is really feeling cheeky--Grumpy Gus from aisle 14 who looks like he lost a bet just showing up to work. So if you already know what you need and don't mind navigating the orange maze solo, Home Depot's a solid choice. Just don't go in expecting a TED Talk on toilet flanges.
