Not to be confused with Valley of fire, the Bowl of Fire lies in a remote area off Northshore Road in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. This time we hiked North and South bowl of fire that took us almost 7 hours and almost 10 miles round trip because we were exploring but you could hike as far as you want and turn back. This is not a beginner's hike. Directions From Las Vegas, take U.S. Highway 93/95 south to Lake Mead Drive. Go east on state Route 146 for about 10 miles to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area's entrance station, where you will either pay an admission fee or show a pass if you have it. Then drive three-tenths of a mile and go left onto Northshore Road. Follow that for 18.2 miles. Just after mile marker 18, look for a parking pullout on the left side of the road, which serves as the trailhead. From the parking area, head northwest toward the prominent limestone ridge, just follow that path west. Once around this small formation you will be able to see the red rock sandstone outcropping - the Bowl of Fire, which will be your destination. Take plenty of water, food and wear sunscreen. Leave no trace. Happy hiking!

Gorgeous area to hike with some trails that are heavily walked on and places to make your own trail. Easy parking on pull offs as well as on the side of the road leading through the park. There are many photo spots with beautiful colored rocks and interesting rock formations. Make sure you are carrying plenty of water and keep your eyes peeled for critters both big and small. It also helps to have a map and a compass just so you don't get lost! Some areas are uneven so you should be wearing some good and broken in hiking boots or at least tennis shoes!

so beautiful & lightly traveled trail. gorgeous red desert rocks. have to share with the community, the black organisms that live on the rocks is actually a type of algae that takes nearly 200 years to grow. because this trail is so new, there is a lot of life & algae alive and well. make sure, if you do go on this trail, you DO NOT touch this stuff! it will die if it's tampered with by humans. we want our desert to continue to be full of life & beautiful!

One of the many hikes to take advantage of out at LMNRA during the winter months. One of the nice things about this hike is no need for a HCV, the trailhead is just right off the road, but you will need to pay to get into Lake Mead if you don't already have a season pass. The hike starts out on a well marked trail, and it continues to a wash until you hit the actual Bowl of Fire, which is very easy to spot (it's the big red area in the middle of the desert). Once you hit the area of BOF, there are a few spots to scramble up and over, nothing too hard. A few dry waterfalls. We did notice a decent rise in the temps once we hit the canyon area and the red sandstone, the red rocks just grab onto that heat and it really warms you up. Beginning of February, it was 75 degrees and we had all stripped down to our first layer. You will pass lots of interesting areas. Natural arches, areas with tons of holes in the rocks that looks like they could inhabit some creatures. Once you hit the top of BOF, the area of Raven's Balcony, you are overlooking the entire area below and there are a ton of dry washes, it's a pretty cool site from the top. This is where we took a lunch break. There are a few ways to do this hike, we did a loop, one person dropped their car at MM 20.6, and another dropped it at MM 18.2. I prefer loop hikes whenever possible so I can see some different terrain on the way out.

Drive past this trailhead parking sign just off Nortshore Road at marker 16 for the Bowl of Fire trailhead

It's steep and you may have to climb just a little bit. Going down, just be careful and take your time. No shade, and can't imagine during the summer. Bring lots of water. Not crowded at all, and lots of parking as well, just no restroom. Great scenery with the top of the view, where you can see almost everything.

The trailhead is in the middle of a neighborhood. There's only about six parking spots, but people were parking on the street. It's almost a half mile on pavement until you actually start the trail. Just keep following the signs for markers 404. Once you get to 1.25 miles the trail will split. Keep going straight. Do not turn right onto marker 402. From here you will start noticing a big difference in the elevation. There are a lot of switchbacks. Be careful with your footing because there is a lot of loose rocks. It's a total of 3.6 miles to the very top. The last 3/4 of a mile gets pretty intense because you're going to have to actually climb up large rocks. You will lose sight of the flag pole that is at the top, but don't give up because when you least expect it you're at the top. The peak has 360° views of the Las Vegas strip, Henderson, Anthem, and you can even see the California/Nevada state line. There is a rock fort that you can sit in. There's an old military ammo box that other hikers left snacks in as well as a journal for you to submit an entry about your hike. It took me about 2 hours to ascend and 1.5 hours to descend. Difficulty was moderate to high.

It has a gradual incline which can be a pleasant challenge for some. During the hotter months it can be a bit of a punishing experience as there's no shade or trees, so just be aware. This trail is in proximity to a baseball field (fly balls should be considered if you intend to park your car at the trail head base) and a large park which is busy most times I've visited. The trail itself is not as busy, though, which is pleasant. Something else that is pleasant are the lovely panoramic views of Henderson and the Vegas Valley. This trail is for sure worth visiting.

I've hiked this trail a couple times before with my fam and it's been a long time since I've been back. The weather is finally cool enough for me to take walks outside again and I like that. With the record breaking heat that we had over the summer, it was just too hot to go for a walk outside. My favorite part about hiking these trails is that I get to enjoy the amazing views of the mountains, The Strip, and all other parts of the Las Vegas valley while I get my steps in. Dogs can tag along with you, but be aware that coyotes and rattlesnakes are very active along this trail. Also be sure to carry plenty of water and fully charged phone just in case. I hiked solo and didn't want to go way far out on the trail, so I just stayed where I could see all the views of the city. But I managed to reach my goal of 3.5 miles!

The…read moreShoreline Trail stretches from the former Las Vegas Bay boat launch area to the 3 Islands Overlook at 33 Hole about 2 miles south. When I hike this trail, it's because I'm hiking through what's known as White Owl Canyon and after going through some pipes to get to the old road, I return to the car by joining the Shoreline Trail about a mile from the parking area for 33 Hole and the 3 Islands Lookout. Some volunteers have done some nice work over the last couple of years by placing boulders along the trail so one knows where to go. This section has changed over the 7 years or so that I've been hiking the trail. The boulders work now because the level of the lake has fallen so much there's little danger that the trail will be covered by water and the rocks become useless. In fact, it has been very discouraging to watch the level of the lake drop so much that you now have to leave the trail to get to the edge of a stream that was once the lake. It is nice to see the water fowl and it's a pleasant hike when temperatures permit.

Add to that, a bunch of great people and our resident hike expert Norm leading the pack, you got yourself one heck of an excursion! There were 10 of us on this chilly morning and it was my first time inside the Lake Mead Area. The views here are so breathtaking, pictures and reviews don't do any justice...you gotta get out there and experience this yourself! This hike is about 3 miles and involves different elevations, a bit of rock scrambling, going through a few tunnels and a brief time inside owl canyon where we saw great rock formations, and even an owl who was guarding his/her huge nest nearby. there were also tons of clam shells scattered around and old Budweiser and Coors cans from the peel tab era. There also was a random wood frame kinda thing during our hike which made all of us clueless as to why anything was being constructed. After a short walk on the paved road way, we looped around and began the trek back to our cars along the rock formed trail taking in the awesome scenery and a last scramble up the same hill we first went down back to the parking lot. Thanks again Norm for another great hike, and we'll join you on the trail once again for your next hike! ALOHA!!! Shaka Meter: \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ \uuu/ 5
