Should have listened to the reviews prior to even trying this place. Ordered 5/13 with shipping to Hawaii. Nowhere during the check out process was it made clear what their shipping policies to Hawaii are. After about a week order was still "processing" so I tried to reach out through email and got no response. I did find, buried in the website, that Hawaii shipping requires special set-up. So to try and do that I called the next day, the day after that, and the day after that, leaving 2 messages in total. Never got a response. Finally called to request the order be cancelled and will now need to follow that up as I wonder if they'll ever do that. Don't waste your time. read more

They offer the Meyda Tulip lamp shades on their site. Don't be fooled. You won't ever get them. While they don't charge you up front for them, they waste your time telling you they are back ordered for months, before just deleting your order from their site completely. If you contact them Greg Shapiro will basically imply you should not be complaining because you haven't been charged. The idea that you may actually want the items that you ordered, so that you can use your lamp, or that you don't appreciate them just wasting months is your time on waiting, doesn't seem to penetrate his brain fog. read more

Wish I had checked Yelp before paying in full (over $600) for a fixture promised delivery in 2 weeks. 3 months later- no fixture, store employees hung up on by owner Greg when I came in person to cancel order. Stood patiently while they handled other customers. Waited for them to recall the owner. I finally just left after about 10 minutes. They were given no direction how to handle the situation. A month later the fixture was in- they opened the box in the store- it was broken!!!! In pieces!!!! I am disputing the charge on my credit card! Nightmare!!! Horrible company to do business with. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING ONLINE from this company. I ordered a chandelier in November of 2019. It is now February 18, 2020. 11 weeks have gone by and my order has never been received. But the company didn't hesitate to charge my credit card over $4.3K right after the order. I have received nothing but excuses from this company about the delays. I have also been promised multiple times the order will be fulfilled 'very soon'. Well, after almost 3 months, the order is still NOT fulfilled. And be very careful because they are now saying if I cancel, there will be a 50% restocking fee even though it doesn't say that anywhere on their site. I guess they just made up a loan shark number. I would not spend a dollar here or deal with Greg in anyway. I have a store credit for a few thousand dollars from an order that there was a mistake. I ordered a light early last year, that he said he would order. After literally months and months of emails and phone calls and broken promises by Greg, he still has my money, and no new light. Ordered almost $800 worth of exterior lights several weeks ago 6/2. It's now 6/21 and nothing but crickets. No email other than "thanks for your order" They are glad to keep my $800 while they dilly dally around. I emailed their customer service email asking for an update and also called and left a message to be called back. Still no word. These are important and are for a customer who is wondering why it's taking so long to order these in. Having to make excuses for a poor online company is not acceptable! I am a bit nervous. I placed an order almost a month ago, and the item that I ordered is quite pricey. I received a confirmation email, but it went to my junk mail. I called a few weeks ago and emailed for status and could not get anyone to answer the phone or respond in any way. Thank goodness my card has not been charged. I called several times and tried several prompts, and I was not able to get an answer. I am wondering if I need to put a stop payment on this item as I need my light and need to know if they ever plan to send it. It doesn't look like there is any way to get a status or cancel as you cannot get a response. I am wondering if the company has gone out of business. read more

I made a purchased from Bowery Lighting and at the time of check out, I was told there was no shipping cost as shipping was free. This was not the case as Greg Shapiro emailed me almost 10 days later stating I owed them another $90 for the light fixture I ordered. This was a shipping cost and it was not calculated during the check out process. Not only did they charge my PayPal account for the cost of the fixture, they insisted I pay the extra $90 to have my light mailed over to me. I immediately lodged a complaint with PayPal and only then was I able to retrieve my money. After all this, I looked up the reviews and Greg himself along with Bowery Lighting have been named on various review sites as having horrible customer service. BUYER BEWARE I have purchased over $5000 in lighting from Greg Shapiro the president of Bowery lighting back in 8/29/18. It is now 7/12/19 and he has still not completed this order. Over 50 emails, which I kept on record, in which he lies about completing this order. Greg Shapiro is liar, a thief and incompetent in his business practices. This is the first time I have ever written a bad review about anyone. Please read other reviewers assessment of Bowery Lighting. It will confirm what I have said. I don't think I've ever left a company a negative review before. I am very patient & easily pleased. I ordered a lamp on 01/25/20..the page stated it was currently in stock & that there was a one to three week shipping time. After a few weeks of not receiving a shipping notification, I tried calling the company several times. I left voicemail messages that were never returned. I emailed & received a short response that Bowery was waiting on the estimated time of arrival from manufacturer. No time frame was given. So I called the manufacturer directly & was told that the item was currently in stock but Bowery had not placed an order in my behalf. Equipped with this knowledge, I contacted Bowery again with no response. Apparently, they did not want to honor the price on their website, as it was too low for them to make a profit. I then sent an email that I wished to cancel my order, after which I received a quick response stating order cancelled, your card will not be charged. What bothered me more than anything was that they were not honest & forthright about not being able to honor their price & that they led me along & wasted my time for nearly a month. I have since purchased the lamp for a reasonable price with a company that has outstanding customer service! read more

I have been meaning to write this for awhile, but wish I would have read these reviews before ordering over a year ago. We had been looking at the Elk Lighting Jefferson Forged to replace our two large front door along with 5 smaller ones around the house after having our house repainted at the end of 2015. For New Years 2016, we pulled the trigger and decided to buy them all, over $1200 order. We chose bowery because they had a large end of year discount. We got the order confirmation and actually received the 5 smaller lights about 2 weeks later. The problem occurred when I started asking questions about when the two large front door ones would arrive. To make a long story short, over the course of a year, I have heard they were next week, two summer, to fall, to back ordered, to in stock, etc. The story was never the same and I have nearly 50 emails back and forth to prove this. The two lights were almost half the total bill and they basically set on my money until I finally received the lights in Dec 2016 (one year later). Of course when I got them, the glass was broken, so had to call and email again. Only to be hung up on. I asked if they could throw in some led lights for the nice new fixtures I had bought to make ammends. At first they told me they would sell it to me at a discount, but when I said that was not acceptable, they did thrown in 6 lights of the absolute cheapest quality with white bottoms that would look horrible in a clear glass fixtures. I guess the long story short, is a good discount is not worth the headache and lack of communication. Please spend the extra dollars to order from a store that might actually care. I have noticed that they refute a lot of these posts, so if anyone cares, I would be more than happy to post all correspondence with them so you can see how bad the experience was. Greg Shapiro was my primary contact and I am 100% sure he will know how bad he did this with us. read more

I ordered replacement lily lamp shades on Jan28th 2018 . After waiting patiently 3 mos I still hadn't receive them. Contacted them then received a email stating they all came in broken. Was told they would be shipped out the following week and nothing. Contacted them to request a refund it's been almost 1 year I think they should have been able to send me the shades o ordered or refunded my money. But I've gotten no results. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! They forgot my order, never called me back, never sent an update my order until I had to call, were horribly unsympathetic and were incredibly rude and unprofessional. Please don't support this company, you'll never receive your order anyway. #regret Owner is lying. They acknowledged they "FORGOT" to ship my order when I called after 3 weeks of no shipping info sent, said they'd call me back with details and did not. I called back a week later, got another rude woman who said she'd send my message along to someone in the company who handles these issues. Magically, within minutes, I get an order saying my order shipped. I then called back asking why I wasn't contacted before it shipped, like I was told I would be so I could cancel my order. The manager got horribly defensive, refused to listen to me, started saying things that weren't true that I had said, at which point I said "the customer service of this company is shit." So yes, I cursed. At the manager? No. At the customer service of this company? Fuck yeah. Never, should a customer feel attacked on the phone when the company forgot to send her order, did not return her call, and had to take the time to call them back to get details. Update to my previous review. I received the light and it's just as I expected it to look from the photos. The issue with my cc that didn't go thru wasn't told to me on the morning I placed the order. It was only told the next day. I immediately gave a new cc( i didn't realize my other card was canceled). And wanted to order expedited for 2 day shipping. This was on a Thursday, so if it was processed for 2 day I would have reviewed it Monday or Tuesday at the latest. The manf of the light had issue as well which caused the delay. Regardless, I now have the light and am happy with the product. read more

Great experience at Bowery Lighting's Farmingdale location. Very nice and competent staff. Great selection of lights, and if they don't have what you are looking for, offer various catalogs from top distributors to search and choose from. Prices are great. They held four lights that I ordered for over four months until I was ready to move into my house. Kojo and Greg (owner) were fantastic to deal with. I will be back to Bowery soon when I need another bunch of lights. Give Bowery your business. They deserve it. read more

Updating in response to management's answer. You are an absolute liar. I have emailed and left 2 voicemails. NO ONE is available by phone, even when I press the option for "place an order". You will be directed to a voicemail to which no one will return. For anyone about to use this company, try reaching the 866 number or the actual store by phone. When you can't, you'll know that every review on Yelp is true. Every review is responded to by the owner with further lies. The reviewers are not the liars. The owner is. I even tried to reach the business at the 631 Long Island store number and still received the same voicemail. I will blocking this order on my credit card. I was in a hurry and broke my cardinal rule of researching company reviews online before placing an order. These reviews say it all. I placed an order and now cannot reach this company by email or phone. Phone hours say 9:00 am EST, but you get a message that you are calling outside of business hours. When I called later in the day, I had to leave a voicemail. Neither the email or voicemail I left were responded to. If they are, in fact, "the nation's largest distributor of lighting", how in the world do they not have a live customer service number. As someone else noted, it is a middleman operating out of garage somewhere. I cannot cancel the order and will dispute it on my credit card. I also never received notice of when the order would be shipped. I have a time sensitive job and need to have an idea on this. After about 3 weeks, I attempted to call them today, but they don't answer their phones. I left a message and later I received a cryptic e-mail from Greg stating that the item was no longer available. That's fine, I knew the item was hard to find, but I'll bet they knew that 3 weeks ago. I will never buy anything from this store again. We purchased a few lights on their website. For over a month, never got a confirmation and thought the items were not ordered. We went to find something locally and when we went to cancel the order, they said it just shipped. When I explained we never recv'd any confirmation, they didn't care. Upon receiving the items, we tried to return them. We kept getting auto response emails about the restocking fee for returns. OK, we'll pay the restocking fee, but told we needed an RMA number, which they never provided. I called the owner at least five times and he NEVER once called back. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM IF YOU ARE AT ALL NOT SURE YOU WILL KEEP YOUR ITEMS. I now have two fixtures in a box in my garage. read more

BUYER- please BEWARE! Bowery Lighting has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I wish I had listened to other Yelpers. I genuinely feel taken advantage of by this company and I have never so earnestly felt compelled to warn prospective consumers. I placed an order on April 9. It is now August 1: Bowery Lighting will not provide an update, and the company charged me $600 for the lamp I ordered back in April. Here is my experience: My husband and I have been settling in to our new home and we placed an order for a lamp that we both agreed we loved online. After noticing that our April 9 order had not shipped by the end of April, I E-mailed via Bowery's online "inquiry form" for an update. When I didn't receive a response for a few days, I called customer service to ask about my order status. No one answered, so I left a voicemail. My call was not returned. I became concerned when I checked my bank statement and saw that the payment had already cleared, so I called again the next day and left a message again. Once again, however, my call was not returned. When I called for a third time, I finally got someone on the phone. This person informed me that she did not have my order status, but that she would have someone call me. She was, quite plainly, abrupt and unapologetic. To her credit, though, someone did call to inform me that my lamp was back-ordered. This person informed me that my lamp would ship during the last week of May or the first week of June. Part of me thought it was unprofessional that no one told me my lamp was "back-ordered" until I had to place multiple calls, but I truly did love the lamp. I thanked them for the update and resolved to wait until May/June. I received no lamp at the end of May. Neither did I receive the lamp at the end of June. I E-mailed for an update. I received no response. I called for an update and left a message. I received no call back. Finally, I got someone on the phone. She informed me that she would leave a message with the appropriate person to check on my order. She sounded edgy, like I was "bothering" her by calling to check ("yeah, you're calling about the lamp, right?") when I simply had no idea where my purchase was or where my $600 went. Honestly, I began to feel ridiculous, myself, for having to chase Bowery down. It just is not my style, at all. I never received a call back. A WEEK later, I received an E-mail message that I was forced to decode on my own. The E-mail had been forwarded from Bowery and was, presumably, to Bowery from the supplier of my lamp. [The forward contained no explanation. From Bowery to an Unknown E-mail address, it said, "Need Status" and from Unknown back to Bowery it said, "Confirmed for July 13".] Although I was becoming frustrated and skeptical, I gave the company the benefit of the doubt again. I waited until July 13. July 13 came and went. I received no shipping notice. I tried to call. My call went to voicemail. At this point, I am very upset. Let me say that I am almost NEVER upset and am generally rather shy. But, I called again on Friday, July 29 and left a stern voicemail informing Bowery that I demanded someone to call me back that day give me an update to my order and that, as a lawyer, I am fully aware of my rights. I have waited for 5 months and I spent $600 on a product that I have not received. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK. I could not believe it! No one even bothered. I literally just handed these people $600 and they walked away with it. I can't believe it, after ALL of my patience and all of my willingness to wait. I can't believe it, after I never received an apology for ALL the time I wasted trying to find out why my order hadn't shipped. The joke is, I was still going to give this company my business. Even hearing my patience run out, no one cared enough to call. I called back on Sunday, at my wit's end, and left another message demanding a call back--my voice was actually shaking as I spoke. I truly feel like they have stolen the hard-earned money my husband and I were putting towards our home. Please, pursue business elsewhere if you want to feel respected and valued as a consumer! Possibly the worst company on the entire Planet. I called and emailed several times. Rep keeps saying these will ship after they are received from another warehouse. Every time I call they say the same thing. "These are coming from Canada and the recently switched warehouses" I really don't care where the heck they are coming from. Don't state on your website that delivery time is between 7-10 business days. It probably means this company is a dropshipper. I ordered a floor lamp from Bowery a month ago, which was drop shipped to me from their supplier and damaged in transit. The supplier said to get an "RGA" request from Jessica at Bowery Lighting and they would replace it (apparently a common problem with this lamp, which has a fragile base, improperly protected for transit). Since then I've had two weeks of run around calls and emails from Bowery, culminating in an email response from Jessica at Bowery Lighting saying she was no longer with the company as of a few days ago and that my problem would be "handled accordingly." Upon searching the Web, others have had the same problem with Bowery (aka Universal) Lighting -- a run around rather than actually dealing with customer problems in damaged lamps. read more

I placed an order on 4/8/15. After almost 2 weeks of waiting I called on 4/21/15 to see where the package was. I was told that it would ship 4/22/15 (today) which is exactly 2 weeks from when I placed the order. Lo and behold they must have overnighted the package because I received it today. I opened the box to find that the bulbs I didn't order were inside. I go to call and NO ONE answers the phone and after calling twice in a row the phone is magically off the hook. In response to this apparent business owner, I'm not lying. Someone else watched me place the order and SAW the item didn't have frosted glass. Also, how is this apparent business owner going to sit here and say they did nothing wrong. I had to call a total of 4 times on 4/21/15 and leave a message to which I didn't receive a call back until a couple hours later to which the guy on the phone said, "uh I don't know what to tell you. Your item will ship soon." Then today 4/22/15, after receiving the incorrect item, I got hung up on TWICE. None of my claims are false. read more

Jackie is being completely honest! The fact that I use my nick name and maiden name on Facebook has absolutely nothing to do with my review of this business. And it's reliability. Reading the owners comment to my review is the first I am hearing the words " back order". Everytime my husband or myself called and spoke to Paul Traci Cojo. We would be told "we don't know why the manufacturer has not sent your complete order" we will to call them and they're in California so we can't call now" on no less then 4 occassions did we point out that California is 3 hours behind us. And at noon or 1 they should be open. Then we are told oh ok we'll call and get back to you. Only 1 call returned and we were told the order would be filled and received in 5 days. 7 days later we called and we are back to we don't know what happened their in California. .... They are the worst company I have ever worked with, They sent me a lamp that does not in any way match the description given. When I spoke to them about the obvious mistake, they told me that the description says that "designs might vary" so it's my problem. Really? So if I order a black lamp with white stripes, they feel that they can send a purple lamp with orange polka dots, because "designs might vary." Honestly, worst company ever. Avoid them. read more

I will never do business with this company again. They do not respond to voicemails or emails regarding order status or how to return items shipped incorrectly. Their representatives are rude, not helpful and don't tell you the truth. Ordered 3 fixtures online and after two weeks had not received them. Left 4 messages and sent two emails over the next week with no response. After calling off and on all day I got a live person and asked to speak to the Manager. He told me I would receive my order by the end of the week. The next Monday, no lights. Called several times again and after 3 days spoke to someone who told me my lights were on back order for another 3 weeks. Once I received the lights, I was sent the wrong kind. Called several times and had to deal with the rudest and most unhelpful customer service rep. The owner of this company is a crook and extremely unprofessional! I have a list of complaints: 1. After I spoke with a salesman about a product they guaranteed would work for my house, it didn't 2. I was told the item would ship to my house, it didn't 3. When I received a phone call that I had to pick up the product in the store the woman was very nasty over the phone 4. They are supposed to open at 10 am but no one arrived to open till 10:45 5. Owner charged me a 25% restocking fee even though the only thing they stock is what is out on the floor and the salesman sold me the wrong thing. The owner then proceeded to tell me that he didn't need my business that he was a rich man and I could either take his refund (which was $135 less than what I paid) or take nothing and get out of his store. I purchased quite a lot of fixtures from them for my house down south. They gave me a good price, however when I went back to purchase Morer fixtures they didn't have them in the showroom so i purchased from a catalog. It was represented that they would work a particular way but when they were installed in my house down south and i went to see them they did not work as promised. I called to see if they would work with me to correct the problem or exchange them but the new store manager who answered was extremely rude and wouldn't talk to me. I asked him to have the owner call me but of course I never got a call back. They have my money so they don't care about anything else. Stay away. read more
