Perfection. It had layers of flavor that were just out of this world -- warm, comforting, and a little bit indulgent, in the best way possible. But wait, the sides! The oxtail may have stolen my heart, but the sides definitely helped win me over. The rice? Fluffy, light, and the perfect base for soaking up that flavorful sauce. And don't even get me started on the plantains -- crispy on the outside, sweet and tender on the inside. They were the perfect balance of sweetness to complement the rich, savory oxtail. This meal was an absolute flavor bomb, and I'm already planning my next visit. If you haven't tried the oxtail here yet, do yourself a favor and get on that. You'll thank me later.

They have an open dining room and you can pick your spot to sit. You choose your food up front and then they place your plate where you are sitting. Price is as just under $11 so a good price considering prices nowadays but unfortunately not my fave due to options.

I got a to-go order of the fried fish for my hubby and he wanted his with the Okra and Tomatoes, which he really enjoyed. The server initially said they maybe out of chicken. Came back to say they had chicken left. My husband order liver and onions, she was unsure about the liver and onions. She asked the cook, who was walking around out front. He responded, yes we have liver. Okay, great we ordered. She said it will take 15 minutes. We said okay. She comes back out to say they have no Lima beans. My husband says why don't you tell me what you have and I will choose. It was apparent they had very little on the menu. It's 1:30pm on a Wednesday. It helps to know your inventory. The food comes out. I could hardly cut the chicken it was so dry and overcooked. It looked dark inside as if it was old. I tasted a little piece thinking maybe it was a different seasoning, it had an aftertaste. When the server came back, we inquired about the chicken. She said it is precooked in the mornings and cooked completely when ordered. I thought that's dangerous, letting undercooked chicken sit until ordered. The liver was so dry, you can see it in the picture. My husband could not eat it. They gave the impression that the food was cooked to order. It was not. The black eye peas and yams were good. The collard greens were okay. Not sure where the gravy on the rice came from. It wasn't from the liver. We didn't eat any of the food. They charged us for half the meal. I would have given a 1, but they were very nice. My goal is never to hurt a business. I'm a business owner. But, we must give a good product. We were very disappointed.

The sausage was amazing. Unsweetened tea was good, as well as potato salad and beans. Cons: the ribs were very large, tender and had a great smoke flavor but that's it. They were pretty fatty, although still had a decent amount of meat. But there was no real flavor to the meat other than the "smoke". The brisket was tender also but flavorless. I tried both sauces. Both taste very ketchup based with the Hot just being super spicy. I mixed the sausage and brisket together to eat so it would help the brisket. The location is great and in walking distance in Ybor, from the trolly or locals. Little house like place with two tvs on. One playing sports while the other was playing some Jerry Springer style lame drama, and was plenty loud for us to hear. Overall, very disappointed. The Smoker was going and gave us high hopes but lack of flavor made for a very dull meal.

After getting my order started looking for a table and at 2pm, they were all taken. Found a table where people were leaving. As they left, I caught from the corner of my eye 2 other people coming from 2 different direction heading towards it and it became a live version of 'The Hunger Game'. Barely slid my tray on it before them. Got it! Back to the food. The Chicken was great. Very tasty and juicy in a sauce with so much fat in it, I could hear my arteries clapping shut with joy. Let's face it. That's what makes it taste so good. Not meant to be healthy. The rice was the opposite. Very dry, and tasteless. Even a little hard. Not from undercooked, more like a reheated taste. The owner greeted us at the door, it was fairly empty so there was no wait and we were seated right away. The ambiance is nice. It does look like you've stepped into the VIP area of a restaurant, so it was cute -- not fancy, but cute. The owner then told us about the restaurant being inspired by his mother, they've been around for 10 years, explained the menu etc., it was nice. He also told us that he hadn't been to Jamaica since a kid and that raised an eyebrow -- but we let it go because he wasn't the cook. MIND YOU, I brought my cousin here (who is Jamaican) after seeing decent reviews about it. He brought over our first round of drinks and they were really good. We really enjoyed them. They weren't strong at all, tasted like juice. So I would recommend just getting juice instead of the +$5 to add rum. As we began to order and look at the menu, the prices were really HIGH, but I guess he was going for upscale cuisine -- so we said OK, let's see what this entails. We all ordered the Taste of the Island plater that gave an oxtail, curry goat and jerk chicken, rice and peas, plaintains and a tiny side salad. I wasn't mad at the portions given, but the flavor didn't hit the mark at all. NOW LETS GET INTO THE FOOD The Jerk Chicken was OVERLY spicy; we couldn't even enjoy the flavor. The oxtails were fatty, sweet and BLACK. Not enjoyable at all. The goat was OK, but not very flavorful in my opinion. The beef patties were good, but probably out of a box. The Roti was good and the oxtail dipping sauce was good. The Honey BBQ Wings were pretty good and cooked well. The Mac'n'Cheese -- DO NOT GET THIS. It literally has NO taste and reminded me of the cup mac'n'cheese that you put the powder cheese in. It took so long to bring it out, I guess he kept forgetting about it (they said everything is made to order) -- which, IDK how you make mac'n'cheese to order. Real cooks know, Mac n cheese is NOT a 5-minute made to order meal. He also didn't ask how we enjoyed the meal -- which I felt like he knew what we knew when he saw that not only did the other table leave a plate full of food (the meats) but our plates resembled the same -- he still collected his coin. There is a 20% gratuity that is added on at the end that is ridiculous considering the prices are already so expensive -- MIND YOU, it is not "Elevate Cuisine", its basic Jamaican dishes on Ikea plates. No special plating, no unique sauces or display, no chef's plating or anything. Just a plate of food. Everyone's bill came in over $100. The table nearby us order the same thing and inquired whether or not we liked our food, but we'd just gotten our food and hadn't tried it yet -- we did warn them about the chicken being spicy, but not everything else. They came after us and left before us and left everything on the plate except the rice and peas. I love black owned businesses and I wish this much more success, but I would NOT recommend it to anyone that is looking for authentic Jamaican food.
