When you must go to BottleDrop in Salem, this location is above all others. Why, you ask? Yes, it smells just as bad as the others, but I've found that if you use your card and buy stickers to affix to the bags (you can get 2 boxes free at a time inside), it's just easier to bypass the line inside. And, there's actually room in the hatch to shove your bags into! What a bonus, right?! I don't know how many times other locations have been so full I had to leave with my bags (boo hiss!), but isn't getting them in your vehicle half the struggle?! I can count the number of times I've had to wait to drop off (outside) here on one hand. Thanks for making this chore doable. read more

It's a great concept but poorly run. It doesn't matter what day of the week I go or what time, the green bag drop is always full beyond capacity. I'm wondering if they have any locations properly staffed. I would go inside if it didn't mean leaving with shoes that stick to the floor. read more

This place was good until a woman who worked there started screaming at customers saying "HEY YOU CAN'T COME IN WITHOUT A BIN TO PUT UR BAGS IN! GO OUTSIDE" She was screaming at everyone and she always went around to check around to see how much money everyone had on their tickets. she was also yelling at a child saying "PUT THE BIN BACK WHERE YOU FOUND IT RIGHT NOW" i wouldn't recommend going to bottle drop ever in your life... read more

BottleDrop is the best IDEA to happen to recycling in Salem since the Bottle Bill was first passed in 1971! I couldn't be more happy about the new nearby BottleDrop redemption centers. In addition to Salem (4815 Commercial Street SE) and Lancaster (1917 Lancaster Drive NE) centers, BottleDrop has added Northeast Salem (1880 Commercial Street NE) and Albany (2141 Santiam Highway SE). Real improvements have been incorporated by the management ... but still room for improvement. There are not enough machines for the weekend crowds, which results in long, often impatient and short-tempered lines. The front is understaffed. The back is better than it used to be, and I don't see the recyclable backups that were previously common. TIP: Accept the market's generous offer to pay six-cents per container (BottleDropPlus), in return for getting a credit slip -- NOT CASH -- for their store. TIP: BottleDrop has added fundraising options for 501(c)(c) charities, either collecting containers for the charity, who redeem the deposit, or transferring credit from your BottleDrop account to them. Let me first say that if there was a selection to give a rating of lower that one star I would be all more than happy to select that than the one star I am giving. I am a regular at the location on Commercial St SE Salem location & I have seen some unprofessional things from their employees over the years but I've kept to myself & just gave the store the benefit of the doubt. HUGE MISTAKE! Today, my wife & I went there to turn in a couple bags of bottles. I took one machine with one bag & my wife to another machine. I received a ticket for $7 dollars even. My wife received a ticket for $7.70. We then make our way to the Kiosk to cash out our tickets. The first ticket I scanned was the ticket for $7 even. I then try to scan the ticket for $7.70 but it would not scan. I try again & again it would not read the barcode. My wife suggest trying the machine next to the one we were using. So I did that & AGAIN it would not read the ticket. Keep in mind that we were standing there trying this for a bit a few different times. So with nothing happening we made our way to the front desk & asked an employee for help. After informing him of what was happening, he takes our ticket & tries to scan it himself. At first it didn't work. but when it FINALLY scanned (AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS) it says that it has already been REDEEMED! Of course it hadn't been redeemed. I still had the $7 dollars for the other ticket & I also had the other ticket as well. So he then takes the ticket to the other machine & tries it there & again it says Redeemed. But again, it hadn't! So he says he would have to look at the camera & I was more than happy for him to do so. When he comes back he tells me that my ticket scanned after I tried it & that another guy walked up after I scanned it & took my money. I told him that it was impossible because we stood there for a while & nothing happened. No sound when it read the ticket! No money was dispensed! AND THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND US AT THE TIME! So I asked the employee if he would let me see the camera & he denied me that & would not redeem my ticket. This is when I knew something was fishy. So as of right now, "MY OPINION" is that this employee was lying..... Screw that! I KNOW HE WAS LYING! Because we stood there for long enough. If we are suppose to stand there for 5 minutes after scanning a ticket WITH NO SOUND LETTING US KNOW THAT IT SCANNED IT & for it to dispense the money then that is a MALFUNCTION of the machine! NOT MY FAULT! Instead BottleDrop decides to STEAL MONEY from their customers. I tried contacting their number and it says to press zero to speak to customer representative and when I press zero it says that I pressed the wrong key! LIKE SERIOUSLY! Let me guess..... Someone else came up to my phone & pressed a different key after I pressed zero! Give me a break! My guess is the employee will write it up as a Kiosk machine malfunction & cash out another ticket & pocket the money himself! STOP STEALING FROM YOUR CUSTOMERS OR TERMINATE THE EMPLOYEES THAT DO! read more

Wow. So tired of this place. I buy the bags, fill them to the gills, tie them tight, even tape the top because I am always getting shorted and I have had to call customer service like every other time because I receive a $5 credit instead of an $8 credit. Petty theft. What losers..... I wish they'd close down. I would rather just recycle without the deception and hassle of fighting against dishonesty. It's a moral issue, so I have felt compelled to complain when it's obviously theft, but it's frustrating. For a while I was throwing my cans into my recycling cart because the amount of work and suffering required to earn one nickle just wasn't worth it. Seriously, when you consider what returning bottles USED to be like, you can't argue that this is THE best place, ever, to return your sticky stinky cans. No more standing outside waiting for goobers to un-dent their cans, or wipe off their barcodes, or try the same can over and over and over. The machines take almost every can/bottle on Earth and if it won't? Have one of the million staff members count it for you. No more smelling the putrid rot of lazy can owners. No more pushing the 'call' button for an annoyed teen to un-jam your machine, shake down the bin, or a place an 'out of order sign' on it. No more moving from the can machine to the plastic machine to the green glass machine to the brown glass machine. All the machines take all you've got! No more sticky floors. No more flies and yellow jackets. No more heat exhaustion or hypothermia. Again, this place is amazing. I love being able to wash my hands with real soap and water when I'm done returning cans! The only downside are the crowds and the folks who are so desperate for a few nickles they'd gladly knock an old lady down to get to the machine first. read more

Very rude, demanding man working the closing shift tonight! Apparently bottle drop closes at 6pm....at 5:50pm the man working tonight starts ranting to the people returning cans like he's some sort of auctioneer "Okay people we're almost closed hurry up" then at 6pm he states "alright, we are now officially closed....stop feeding cans into the machine immediately!" What the heck has happened to customer service these days? The people returning cans had already started and they should have been allowed to finish returning what was left in their bags, would have only taken max 5 minutes probably. Apparently, someone wanted to get out of work and couldn't bare to stay a couple minutes longer. What a joke this place is! It's so convenient to use BottleDrop, having an account, using the bags, tagging and dropping off. Not having to stand in line to deposit, knowing that the process is more challenging now that COVID is a risk to us all, is a big deal for us! BottleDrop Plus is a very nice advantage, too! It's a smart system! On occasion, the space for leaving the deposit is full, but a later day is not a big issue! read more

I came in here a week or so ago after first visiting their Lancaster store which had ALL machines broken and a line of 50 people waiting out the door to have them counted by hand. Then I drove to the one downtown Salem on the other end of Commercial and it was FULL from people heading there from the Lancaster store. So needless to say I was expecting this one to be jammed too, but to my surprise it was busy but not super busy. They had a few carts available and the line was only 4 or so people in front of me. However I think the crowd arrived just after I did because when I left the line was maybe 10 people long. All the machines but one were working and everything was semi-clean (clean as a bottle place can be without someone mopping 24/7). Just wish I lived closer to this one rather than the super busy Lancaster one. read more

If I could leave a 0 star review, I would. Every single time I go here, I have to wait AT LEAST 25 minutes in line before even getting to a machine. The carts, floors and machines are always FILTHY. They never limit anyone to the legal limit so people will come and return an entire pickup truck worth of cans without ever leaving the machines. (A family was taking up 3 machines for the purpose never leaving while an entire room full of people in line) The trash cans for glass, plastic and other items the machines won't take are always overflowing. Last time I was there, the trash compactor was overflowing the entire time and the staff didn't even notice. The staff is always nice, but they always seem to be heavily understaffed or often times there by themselves. Yesterday when I went, I waited for 36 minutes in line and each time the line moved, my shoes stuck to the floor. They need MANY more machines, or alternately bigger locations instead of these tiny ones. read more

I'm filing complaint; this was my first time coming to your facility at Lancaster bottle drop,1917 Lancaster DR NE Salem, OR 97305. I came with my daughter and dad, we had accumulated 12 large plastic bags which all contained empty 2-liters. We got there around 3:00pm, immediately we got a dirty look from one of your staff members, she didn't have a name tag, but she has black hair and a tattoo of feather behind her ear. We both had 4 bags each. Since it was a tight squeeze when we got to the machines, my dad and daughter left the remaining 2 bags in my corner area, since one of the machines was down. Almost immediately, the girl with the feather tattoo approached me and asked are these all your bags, I said no I'm with 2 other family members. She said well once you reach $17.50 you'll need to stop grab your bags and go back into the line. At that time I was at $10.35, my dad came over grab the rest of his bags and said what did she say, I told him she told me I had to stop counting at $17.50 and go back into the line. My father said you don't have $17.50, I said I know. My dad looked around and said, there were people in line bringing bags of cans to their family members who were at the machine and she never approached anyone else, that he witnessed who went over $17.50 and started over. Once she did that to me, the machine automatically spit out my ticket. So, I had to start over, and continued to deposit my 2-liter bottles, not even 4 minutes later she came over again and said, I've been watching you and you need to stop, get off the machine grab your bag and get back in-line. Instead of arguing, I stopped. I was extremely upset that I was kicked off the machine. I was only at $16.00. I still had $1.50 remaining and was down to only 1 bag. I felt she was discriminating against me, because of my Russian culture and purposely humiliated me in front of everyone. I witnessed people smirking in line. My dad then said bring your bag to me and I'll deposit it. Your employee provided horrible customer service and targeted me in front of everyone. I then took over the Safeway water bottles to her and told her the machine wouldn't take these; she said do they have bar codes I said yes. She then said dump them in here, then began to tell me that I needed to enter them neck first and I probably did it wrong. I didn't say anything, because her tone was demeaning and literally hostile. If she hates customer service why is she working at center? I told her this was my first time here and when she kicked me off the machine I was only at $16, she said no I've been watching you, you went over. I again stated no that isn't true. I received horrible treatment and was not greeted with a friendly manner, but was humiliated by her in front of others. If she had allowed me to finish my remaining 1 bag, my dad wouldn't have had to finish them off for me. We would have 2 free machines a lot sooner instead of one. Your employee needs to be trained in providing good customer service and treating people with respect. My dad and I had to wait for my daughter, I watched customers who were depositing their cans, while family members brought them more bags, and she never approached anyone else to get off the machine and back in line in the 15 minutes we waited for my daughter. Many customers printed out their tickets at $17.50 and simply started over. Some printed their tickets at $5 and started over. My father said, what is wrong with her, she immediately targeted you and was literally angry that you depositing the 2-liters. I said I have no clue, this isn't fair treatment, who had another employee there a younger man who was shorter than her, who kept laughing as if he was telling her something funny. Again, worst service of the year, it's a shame you have someone like her representing your company. I will never go there again and will let everyone know how horribly I was treated. read more

I think this is a very good idea, but the people they hired to run this are idiots, rude not to mention lazy. where did they get the people? and I don't know about anyone else but I work during the day and don't want to have to run home or keep bottles in my car all day to go to the bottle drop right after getting off work. come on folks but most people I know don't want to do this and you are only open until 6pm. this is insane. I went in the bottle drop at 5:55 and most all the machines where opened so you couldn't use them. and I had half my bottles in my bag to go and some rude and I mean rude says to me print your ticket. you think they would at least let you finish. it's not like I had bags and bags to put in the machine. but the guy acts as though I was committing a crime. if your trying to make things easier on the retail stores but doing this only to make things easier for them then they win, but I would like to see extended hours at least until 7 or 8 pm. come on folks working folks have bottles to return as well. and your employee's need to take some cleaning lessons when the floor is so sticky you pick up your foot only to have your shoes almost come off someone needs to step up and mop. and some folks need to take or learn some manners. we don't live in a third world country. but the Lancaster bottle drop sure feels and looks like it sometimes. and send those employee's back to the gutters they crawled out of. sorry just a bit upset if you haven't noticed. thanks for letting say my peace. read more
