I stopped in after looking at the Galleria D'Italia, a space with free exhibits owned by Banca d'Intesa. This caffe has a warm wood interior. You may order at your table any of the food or drinks and the waitstaff will bring it to you. I spent a countless number of times at de Canto because I had just window-shopped along the Via Montenapoleone or had visited Rizzoli in the Galleria nearby or just wanted an oasis of quiet in this mad, chaotic city that was away from the crowds. There is no copperto so you don't pay extra to sit or stand. It's copperto free! I enjoyed having a cup of tea in each visit. If you order a coffee, you get a small piece of Venchi chocolate - a nice treat! Tired from shopping, from visiting the Duomo, from your crazy co-workers or sweetheart who has been nagging you all day, stop by de Canto. You will leave refreshed and feeling very zen.

Many locals stopped in for the traditional Italian standing at the counter espresso and cornetto. We, however, wanted to sit down and relax and they had ample seating upstairs to do so. The waitress brought our cappuccinos to our table and we enjoyed looking down at the bustling cafe. The pastry selection was amazing and it was hard to decide what to get! I got a savory croissant sandwich and a pistachio cream-filled croissant. I ate a croissant every day for a week in Italy and these were definitely the best ones we found! The pistachio cream was a little sweet and it was filled to the point that when I bit in it exploded everywhere, but then again I'm a bit of a mess. Also no regrets. If I had been in Milano longer I would have come back to try even more pastries!

This one is located near the duomo and wasn't too busy despite the presence of their breakfast menu and multitude of tables. There was definitely a small up charge to sit at the tables which was of no bother. The affogato felt oddly satisfying in the morning, though the vanilla gelato was more the texture of ice cream. Maybe they save the real gelato -- which are kept in the small covered metal containers -- for the actual gelato orders?

The cappuccino was alright, but very necessary for the perfect rainy day breakfast.

Their small bite offerings do include a vegetarian arancini -- along with brined olives and nuts -- so its something to bear in mind.
