You don't send forms to be completed before the visit and then accost the patient for completing them. And you don't lie within 10 minutes of meeting someone and expect them to stay. I showed up on time. I filled out all the forms and talked with the tech/doctor. Margie comes over and says, "You're early." "Uh, I'm here on time." "Well, we didn't expect you to have the forms filled out. So right now, you need to stay here and relax." She pulled my tech away, who then sheepishly came back. "Did Margie say I was early?" "Well, you're not early, but..." "Is there a patient ahead of me?" "Um. Yes." "So you overbooked?" "Well, your paperwork wasn't supposed to be done, and..." She said it would be 20 minutes, but the patient ahead of me hadn't even been seated. I left. If your practice is comfortable lying within 10 minutes of meeting me while shifting the blame for overbooking, there is no way you're touching me. I've had five surgeries in three years, all of which I had to advocate for along the way: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/28/well/live/gaslighting-doctors-patients-health.html That self-advocacy breeds firm boundaries and your staff need some training about a) medical trauma and or b) how to lie more effectively when you overbook. If I receive a bill for today's visit, please understand that I will drag you to small claims court as loudly as possible, and then I'll write about why. ----- Upon reading this, Margie contacted me via email. She has thoughts about when appointments start and how career longevity stacks up against unprofessional conduct: Sarah I have read your email and I'm sorry about the confusion. The office always schedules the new patient to check in upfront 1/2 hour with front office staff . Your check in time was 11 am at 11:30 one of the assistants should bring you back in the clinical area to start Your exam, x rays, photo's. checking teeth and gum assessment. Yes ,you were in on time for your check in at 11 am and you were very efficient with your paperwork done. We brought you back before 11:30 which is why I mention that we would be a little longer before we could Start the exam process. I'm sorry if this wasn't conveyed to you on the initial phone conversation about check in Time and when we actually bring you back. We would never over book a patients appointment . We really want to be able to give you and all our patients equality time and earn the patients trust. If you felt that you were "accosted" regarding filling out your paperwork I would like to know what happen so I can address the employee. We always want to treat people with respect . As too the medical trauma that you were mentioning it is of great importants that we take into consideration with the patients medical history before we ever proceed with any treatment on a patient. Lastly I would like to address the "lying within 10 minutes of minutes of meeting me" comment. I believe there was a miscommunication. WE are here to help patients to improve there equality of health which we take very serious. We are and have always been very transparent with all patients and will continue to be so. I am very sorry that your appointment was not the best experience and that you were not able to stay for your appointment today. I understand your prospective why you decided that you need to leave and not continue your appointment from reading your email. If you would ever want to come back and let us try to help the offer to be a patient is still open and I would be happy to help you personally ( I've have 40 years experience) I can assure you that you would be very welcome Please consider coming back. Sincerely Margie Office Manager,RDA

I stopped coming last year after the practice dropped my Delta Dental insurance. I recently decided to give them another try because I now have dental insurance through Cigna. Before my most recent appointment, I sent my insurance information in advance by email and also confirmed it by phone. The office booked the appointment with no mention of any issues. I drove there, took time out of my day, and once I was already sitting in the chair, I was told that the practice had dropped all insurance and asked if I wanted to proceed, pay out of pocket, and then personally deal with whatever reimbursement my insurance might or might not provide later. This conversation happened with a dental hygienist, not an office administrator, despite the practice having administrative staff, and it was extremely uncomfortable. It felt inappropriate for a clinical provider to be put in the position of handling a billing and insurance issue. I declined and left, having wasted time commuting and attending an appointment that should never have been booked under these circumstances. This same situation has happened to me before and is exactly why I stopped going previously. What is most concerning is that all responsibility is placed on the patient. You are expected to manage insurance reimbursement yourself, the practice takes no accountability, and they reserve the right to charge whatever they choose, often well above standard ADA fee guidelines. There was also no follow-up of any kind from the office after the visit. No courtesy call, no acknowledgment, and no attempt to address the situation, which further reinforced the lack of professionalism. The office is beautiful and the staff is welcoming, but the lack of upfront communication, pricing transparency, and professional handling of insurance matters feels misleading. I am sharing this so others are aware and can ask very direct questions before booking, especially if insurance coverage matters to you.

However, this was not accurate. During the process, there was no communication about an additional charge for a core buildup. I only found out later when I received a much higher bill than expected. There was also confusion around billing codes. Initially, I was given one code, and when I questioned the pricing compared to other dental offices quoting $600-$700, the code was changed. Despite this, the final bill submitted to my insurance was completely different and significantly higher (around $2,400-$2,700). As a result, my insurance benefits were quickly maxed out, and I am now being asked to pay an additional ~$800 out of pocket--far beyond what was originally communicated. Additionally, I was told this would be a same-day crown procedure, but after the treatment began (including X-rays and tooth preparation), I was informed that the crown would take about a week. This was not disclosed upfront. Overall, I felt there was a lack of transparency in both pricing and treatment expectations. I would strongly recommend getting a detailed written estimate and clarification of all procedure codes before proceeding with treatment here.

The office is tucked away on a street off NE 185th Street, just past the Harbor Homes. They have their own private lot, so parking is easy to find. Making an appointment was simple and quick, thanks to the helpful staff. My first visit to the office was back in October 2024. I was seen by Dr. Gillian Lim and the dental hygienist, Ben. Ben performed the initial exam and cleaning, and then Dr. Lim came in to greet me and do one final check and cleaning. The entire staff was very warm and welcoming! My first impression of the office and staff was so positive that I decided to bring my parents here as well. During my parents' initial visit, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Karen Wang, who was also very warm and welcoming to both them and me. She paid a lot of attention to my parents and made sure they were comfortable during their dental workup. Dr. Wang was very helpful in explaining any additional dental work that needed to be done and made sure to answer any questions I had. My mom even praised Dr. Wang for focusing entirely on her--the patient--rather than engaging in small talk with staff while working. She had experienced that kind of distracted care with a previous dentist and wasn't a fan of it. I would highly recommend Bothell Smiles Family Dentistry and their team to all of my family and friends! TL;DR: After years of searching, I finally found the perfect dental office--Bothell Smiles Family Dentistry! The staff is warm and welcoming, appointments are easy to book, and both Dr. Lim and Dr. Wang provide exceptional care. The office is conveniently located with private parking. I've even brought my parents here, and we've all had great experiences. Highly recommend to family and friends!

For a frame of reference, I have multiple crowns and have had crown replacements in the past but have never experienced this amount of pain. She administered Nitrous and we finished with the temp crown. Four days later I was still in too much pain and I called the office to notify them. When I returned 2 weeks later for my permanent crown, I expressed I was still in some pain. She again insisted on pushing through the appointment and applied my permanent crown. After it was on, I again commented how tender the area was. She then agreed to do an x-ray and blamed me for not telling her about this before she put the permanent crown on. I was shocked! She looked at the xray and immediately agreed to write me a referral to a specialist for a root canal. It's been one week since my visit with her and I am still in pain and will be calling the specialist. This is unacceptable care and I do not recommend Dr. Nic.
