My sister and I wanted to do something differently for our bday so we chose to do an escape room, and man was this a fun event! You have to reserve a spot in advance so it takes a little bit of planning but definitely worth it. We chose the chocolate factory theme, and it was the room was greatly reminiscent of the movie. The puzzles we have to figure out to escape requires a team effort, and thinking outside of the box. It feels so good when you solve each part, and when you are stuck we can get a hint from our game master, Zoey, was very helpful! This is such a great time for bonding and fun! I was fortunate enough to visit Boss Play Escape Rooms when they had 3 rooms and I found each one to be distinct and entertaining. Prices varied depending on the group size, with parties of 5 and up being $40 each person. Groups of 2 have to pay $80 per person and that seems too steep although I enjoyed the experience. Parking is spacious and they're located on the second floor. I didn't have any issues with the introduction videos like some others have mentioned. The lobby was inviting and they offered free water and candy. For newer players, I would suggest the Prohibition Ransom as it was noticeably easier than the Chocolate Factory. =CHOCOLATE FACTORY= Had some of the most creative puzzles I've ever seen. There was a great mix of different skills needed and everything was thematic. Some of the puzzles were a bit illogical and I wasn't sure how to would have figured them out without guidance. However the speakers were a bit too weak so it was difficult to communicate with the game master. Our game master was also complacent and took a while to respond to us when we asked for hints. =PROHIBITION RANSOM= Had more classic puzzles but the appropriate theming made it fun. The lighting was a bit dim so some parts were difficult to solve. Our game master Kiana was excellent, she was so enthusiastic and accommodating. We had a family member who was sensitive to loud sounds so she replaced the typical gunfire with verbal "gunfire gunfire" so we didn't miss out on the experience. The puzzles were more linear so I would suggest this room for smaller groups. The hints were communicated through a "telephone" and it was much easier to speak to the game master this way. Although I don't expect a shiny monitor to be added in each room, it'd be nice to get a verbal update for how long we've been in the room. Still I prefer the intercom format for hints here as modern rooms have vague, preset responses. A great option for team bonding and worthwhile if you have more than a handful of people. read more

The game master was very accommodating on both and the game master for the gun room really helped craft the story behind the room. I'm actually still sitting in the lobby of this place as I write this. I brought 12 ten-year old girls for a birthday party here and the amount of screaming and insanity was next level. The people working here were completely calm, joked around with the girls, and took the chaos in stride. A couple of the girls ended up being afraid and they were so kind and accommodating (and got them to go in in a way that was comfortable for them)! I had a big family group of 14 with a mix of kids and adults. We booked two escape rooms here that ran simultaneously - the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory room for kids/parents and the Speakeasy room for adults without kids. Both groups had a great time. I did the Charlie and the Chocolate Factor room and I was really impressed by the amount of care and craftsmanship that went into designing the different room elements. It was a little challenging in parts, so I would definitely make sure you have at least one adult in that room to help corral the kids. We did the Willy Wonka room about 5-6 months ago, and we all had a blast! Then this past Wednesday, we took our son to there a Sci-fi one ( I forgot the name of the room but you'll know it when you see), and we had a blast again! The service was totally awesome. When you read about the specific room, you learn that their room can have loud sound effects and maybe something to take caution on. Well, the guy that runs the place was awesome! Because our son is autistic and can have sensitivity to loud noises, he offered to turn down the volume as needed to keep the experience an enjoyable one. THAT IS KILLER SERVICE! THESE GUYS ARE REMAINING OPEN AS WELL!!!! It's no secret how much this year has been hard on everybody. Amusement parks are closed, sports aren't happening. I was here with a group of six people in the Prohibition room. We found out about Boss Play through Codebreakers across the street. We finished the room in about 35 minutes. Logistics: parking is plenty. The business is upstairs next to a pub. While we were waiting, we could hear loud voices and cheering through the walls. There is a bathroom in the back. I highly suggest relieving yourself prior to the game. Book the room online prior to showing up. Sergio, the front desk host, was extremely friendly and great with explaining everything. I would come back just to work with him again. I loved that he was dressed in costume for the prohibition room! The reason for the three stars is the game was on the easy side. I didn't feel challenged, possibly because there were multiple clues grouped together. I'm used to solving a bunch of different codes/locks whereas here I solved like half of that amount. I would describe the puzzles as non-linear, so if you have a larger group, you can split up and work on different things at the same time. I think that if I did this room with only one other person, we may not have gotten out so early. I will give them props for having some techy things though. They also have good written clues as opposed to number codes. The other people in my party would agree it was very fun though! read more

Okay their Willy Wonka room was super awesome! I've done over a hundred rooms, and it's nice to see a fresh and innovative theme. The puzzles are also solid and tie in really well. Definitely don't miss this one! The Prohibition Ransom room was okay - just a little too quick for our group of experienced players, and I feel like I've played that theme too many times. However... I wanted to leave a note because from a customer service perspective, I felt like they make some odd choices. We arrived 15 min early for our appointment, as is custom. Everyone in our group signed in and ready to go well on time. However, with no explanation (until we asked) the two game masters made us wait 15 more minutes after our start time (30 min total of sitting there), simply because they wanted to align our start time with another group who was late for their room... So weird. So in order to save your breath from a giving a 3 min spiel twice, you're going to make your customers wait on another group for 15 minutes? It's also odd because then we have to listen through irrelevant details specific to the other room. And then the late group actually starts before ours... There may be reasons why they choose to operate this way, but I feel they should be aware how it comes across from the customer perspective. I've never encountered this before in all the escape rooms I've done. read more

Love how there was NO combination locks; however, we did have an issue with one of the locks. I am an avid escape room enthusiast! I've done over 25 rooms (yes I know that may be baby to some people, but ya girl has a budget ok..) and Boss-Play did NOT DISAPPOINT! First off, our game master Aspen was AMAZING! Aspen was really friendly and super fun to work with. Aspen made our experience that much more enjoyable. We did the Willy Wonka room first and it was sooo fun and just the right amount of challenging! The room flowed smoothly and wasn't glitchy at all and that's saying something! The puzzles were really fun and unique as well. The room is immersive and well themed. The experience was seamless from first puzzle to the last one (I loved the ending). We had so much fun we came back for Neutrino 42 and did not regret it at all! Such a well designed room and GREAT TECH. No major glitches that impeded game play and there's so much going on that there's plenty to do!!! Really enjoyed this room from the design, to the tech, to the puzzles. Another great one. This is the third and fourth of a set of five reviews we are writing for Yelp, for the escape rooms we have done so far in 2021. We did a short series of reviews back in January this year, and were a little worn out with writing reviews back then - but we're finally up to talking about our most recent five escape experiences! More than once we're so glad we live in Long Beach, which is just about equidistant to Los Angeles and Orange County - and lately, we've taken to driving almost two and half hours (depending on traffic, DoT) just to play rooms that don't require us having our masks on the entire hour. We have our favourite rooms, and if you haven't tried Boss Play yet, you must! The Chocolate Factory (Yelped) was a fantastic experience, so much so when we decided to do Prohibition Ransom, it was just to see what new spin they managed to put on a somewhat standard theme. Here, the speakeasy set-up is a front for a hostage situation, whereby we find ourselves the new hostages of kidnapper "Machine Gun" Kelly, after his original victim, Millionaire Oil Man Charles Urschel escaped. The mobsters demand that we find the millionaire's cash and liquor reserves within 60 minutes ... or else! As previously mentioned, parking here is free, in a covered lot, and the coded bathroom outside the business on the same floor is clean. There is a pub downstairs, but the town center is just down the freeway a little if something more substantial is called for. Right from the start, Prohibition Ransom takes us to the set of an Elliot Ness movie. The puzzles are a hoot with the "it's-right-there-in-front-of-you" mixed in with the "I-couldn't-see-it-even-if-you-put-it-in-front-of-me" variety - and you can sense is a trademark about the rooms. You can tell that these rooms are meaningful and personal to the developer, and they have a very different feel to the franchise rooms of the bigger businesses. In fact, playing a Boss Play room is like playing in an old friend's house. We felt comfortable very quickly, and we've never pressed for time. Jeremy, the boss (haha) and also our game master this time clearly loves his business, both as a player and a game designer, and we had a lot of fun talking with him about the other games we've all played. The room was not high-tech the way the franchise rooms are, but using a pencil and paper to sort things out is no less challenging. There are a number of really good effects, and we didn't have to worry about finishing the room too early and not getting as much bang for our buck that way, because the room won! We are more than fine with not making a full escape out of a room because, for us, the fun is in just playing, but we really appreciated Jeremy letting us stay for an additional few minutes to finish the game, since a big part of each experience is seeing how each room is designed and built. Neutrino 42 is memorable for us partly because it's our first space-themed room. We are Trekkies, so we were anticipating some kind of holodeck glitch or something, going by the description on their web site: we are supposed to be Reuleaux Rebellion spies assigned on the prisoner transport ship, Neutrino 42! Our mission is three-fold: to our cryo-chamber imprisonment, intercept the enemy battle plans and end the evil reign of the Third Realm - and I don't know what we were expecting, but we were not expecting quite as much hands-on fun as we had! Aspen, our game-host, was fantastic in helping us through all the puzzles and various tasks. We found ourselves not so much on the holodeck of a starship as at the helm of one. Right from the start, the adrenaline pump was set and the excitement never let up. We had a heart-stopping 62 minutes that got our pulses up more than a space ride in a theme-park! Thank you, Aspen! The best part about playing in Oceanside, of course, is not being required to play with a mask on! Civilisation, indeed! Especially for Neutrino, since we had to crawl some and use our physical muscles as well as our minds. It was also a very good test for team-building: for one thing, that's exactly how we would be expected to work in a real-life (threatening) situation on a space ship. It's especially enjoyable for us, two empty-nesters, because one of us (the empath) is totally non-conversant in space techno-lingo, so having to work through all that final frontier jargon was certainly a bonus. Loved Neutrino 42. If you live in Oceanside and haven't tried it yet, you must! So, we had a great time - and once we get a chance, we will be hitting their second location. It's worth the drive just to be able to breathe normally while playing a good game! read more

But the attention to detail and authenticity to the film was astounding! The puzzles were so creative, and followed the flow of the story so well!! My wife and I decided to do the Willy Wonka themed escape room at Boss-Play last weekend with a few our friends and I must say IT WAS AMAZING! Being huge fans of the movie, we were impressed with how accurately Boss-Play captures the magic and wonder of the film through the use of classic storylines, whimsical puzzles and cinema-worthy decor. It really felt like we were on-set! Having knowledge of the movie is helpful, but it takes a lot more than that to complete each room. You really have to think outside the box. This past weekend, we were doing an escape room marathon and this was stop 2 of our marathon. This place came highly rated from different enthusiasts and websites so I was very excited to check this place out! When it comes to mom&pop places vs. corporate chains -- they either excel in puzzle creativity or set production. Boss-play does a fantastic job with both. This place is a MUST do if you're a traveling escape room enthusiast. We completed both the Chocolate Factory and Neutrino. They are both very different and they're both worth the time. Chocolate Factory was whimsical and so so much fun. Even though it was on the moderate/easier side, we left so satisfied/accomplished. Every puzzle was cohesive from beginning to end. I love these candy themed puzzles. There were 2-3 times where you solve the puzzle and you get your huge A-HA WOW! moments which I love. This would be a great room for families. Neutrino... The set up was so cool! One of my favorite set to date! This room is more task oriented than puzzle oriented. Just when I was getting used to doing these tasks, the game was over lol..I wish they can adjust the number of tasks required depending on difficulty levels.This game is almost 100% tech based and it went off without a glitch which is sometimes difficult when there's so much tech. Came here to do an escape room on Saturday with the cousins. SERVICE - There was a moderator (blonde) at the front who was working. I do not know his name but he was literally the best moderator we have interacted with out of all our games. He was really friendly and went through the little locks with us that were at the front. You can tell he really enjoyed his job. He made this a fun experience for all of us! ROOM - We had 7 people and we did the Prohibition Ransom room. We can't say it was difficult. We got stuck on one part only because the lock wouldn't open even though it was the right key. It got jammed but eventually we were able to get it to open. We have done several escape rooms before. Some are fun and some are real duds. These were definitely among our favorites so far. We completed both escape rooms in one day, and both were so fun! Our group found The Prohibition Room a bit more challenging, but still very fun. We did the Chocolate Factory first and it was a total blast. We were one minute under the record and didn't ask for any clues! The sets are very imaginative and the clues are complex but fun to solve. These escape rooms have enough for everyone to do at once. We worked with 6 people in our group. Would DEFINITELY recommend Boss Play to anyone looking for a challenging but doable escape room. This was our 11th Escape Room. So we had gotten referred to this room from previous escape rooms. And we were in the area for Comic Con, so we decided to hit up this place on our way home. We decided to go with the Chocolate Factory room. At first I was skeptical, because I was afraid it might be TOO easy because of the theme and it being family friendly. But I was told from a previous player that the room is "not too hard, but it is VERY fun and nostalgic" So the place is located in a very huge parking lot. And it was pretty easy to find. It's in one of the upstair businesses. The place is very nice with some hand puzzles to play with while you wait. Staff was VERY nice and talked about other escape rooms in the area. Got some potential names of other places to hit up in our escape room quest. So now... the room. This was one of my favorite rooms to date. I'm gonna say top 5. They stayed true to the movie. If you loved the original Willy Wonka, you will appreciate everything in the room from the VERY beginning. The room is cute and fits the theme perfectly. I didn't realize til we finished the game but we didn't need to use ANY locks! All the puzzles were fun, unique, and needed teamwork to complete!
