I had the misfortune of my car's screen conking out on me, so I decided to try to have Geek Squad do an installation. I booked an appointment online and it's like pulling teeth trying to figure out exactly which parts to buy since you need to go to your appointment with everything ready. There are many components needed if you want a new screen that will work with your backup cam and/or steering wheel controls. Prior to the appointment, I went with my fiancé to inquire about which screens would be the best option for me. We went to the Geek Squad desk, and I explained to an employee that I had an upcoming appointment. I said I wanted to get input from GS in advance on which radios I should browse at the store. The employee walked away and came back a few minutes later to tell me, "The auto technician isn't in right now, but he'll be here tomorrow. So, we can make suggestions today, but they might not be the best suggestions." This was one of the most ridiculous interactions I've ever had at a store, I couldn't believe the absurdity of it. So I wasted my time going there, now I should waste even more time by going again in hopes of speaking to someone for a pretty simple question? After this absolute joke, I cancelled my appointment and ended up going to a specialty shop that knew what they were doing.

Having worked at Radio Shack back in college, I was paid minimum wage OR commission, whichever was more. So, when you get the attempted upsell for things like batteries, there's an economic reason behind it. Falling on hard times has meant liquidation of hundreds of stores across the U.S. in recent years, as the electronics retailer has struggled to stay relevant in an increasingly online world. Still, I have to say I'm glad there's a place to buy power adapters, batteries, Arduino gear and MakerBot supplies, even if I'm not currently an aficionado of such projects in my advanced age. While this location is about par what you'd expect, I do hope it sticks around, maybe even in a more forward-looking iteration, or a with a revamped product line and a dynamic marketing campaign. It would leave a Radio Shack-shaped hole in my heart if it were gone.

RS advertises "quick" screen repair and when I first brought it in they told me it'd take 2-3 days. But it ended up taking SIXTEEN (16) days. It took them a few days to realize they couldn't fix at the store so they had to send it out to the "master tech" -- then they didn't send it out when they first told me they were going to, then when they finally did it took forever to get back and nobody knew where it was. It was just a comedy of errors. Plus, my frustration was compounded by customer service that was beyond apathetic -- when I would call to check the status, generally nobody knew anything and I'd just be told to call back, really they just wanted to get me off the phone so they wouldn't have to bother actually providing any customer service. And the iPad is "fixed" and generally functional, but it's not the same. It uses battery probably 3x faster, sometimes the screen doesn't respond to a touch they way it should, and in one corner it's a little thicker and it makes a clicking noise when squeezed. If I had to do it over, I'd spend $500 or whatever on a new iPad rather than the $200 I spent for a crappy experience and an imperfect old iPad. It was a BIG mistake taking it to Radio Shack and I'm not the least bit surprised the company is bankrupt.

AVOID PAC AT ALL COSTS…read more If you are in the market for a high end audio or home theatre system, or perhaps a seamless wireless internet system, you should seek out a business specializing in these services. You should expect to pay more for the components than at Best Buy or PC Richards, because the selection of the components, the expertise in designing the system, and the overall service pre and post the sale are part of what you are purchasing. But what if you do not get good service, such as being double billed for installation when the component recommended did not meet the proposed purpose? Or if you are billed for service provided and the system is less functional than when the person arrived? Or if you are told to solve the problem yourself through a website, which requires speaking with that company's technical expert, purchasing components you must assemble and install on your own, but the home theatre business decides to sell you those components at MSRP plus shipping, even though they expended no time and left you to solve the problem alone? Or if the head of the service department is nasty and totally lacks any interpersonal skills and is unwilling to accept any responsibility for any issues that are not satisfactory to the customer and will not even grant the slightest credit? I would say that you should avoid that business at all costs and find one that is committed to its customers and provides the services promised as outlined above. This was my experience at PAC and why I would never use them again. It is also probably why I never received the survey mentioned on their website, which I doubt if they ever received back would take it seriously. PAC Client Satisfaction Every project is followed by a survey mailed to the client with a postage paid reply addressed to the owner of PAC Ralph Tarnofsky. I never got this survey and when I did provide feedback, I got the cold shoulder and no satisfaction. Instead, I received contempt and no consideration.

Having used PAC in the past for installation and wiring we consulted with them about potential ideas for a tricky space. After working with the Richard the salesperson we settled on a variety of components for our system. Once installed for approximately $15k we were pleased with the sound and picture (which PAC has little to do with) but the user experience of the setup was awful. The bracket they chose was a pain in the ass to move and required serious muscle. Fast forward to two years ago and we downsized to an apartment in Summit and called to have them reassemble the system. None of the components were changed. Not a single element of the system except excluding the rear surround speakers differed from their system setup in short hills. Yet for some reason the tech needed to reprogram the $1500 universal remote for literally two hours. This of course gets billed to us. The kicker is that it doesn't work well at all. The remote rarely turns on all the components and the system continues to be a pain in the ass. Picture and sound are good but the "parts that don't come in a box" (their tag line) are not good. You're better off spending half as much on a system that has been dialed in by the manufacturer. Finished systems from these guys make designy stuff from B&O or even Samsung look like a steal once you're paying $3k in cables for a tv and another $3k for labor. We've communicated all of this to them over the years from initial dissatisfaction with the setup to our frustration with the relocating across town. Not sure they know what to do so they just move on to selling the next schmuck on a $75k setup. My two cents, do your homework before committing to a job from these guys.
