He suggested that I plan to save $6000 to $7000 for a new one this fall. In November I met with a Walrath salesperson who evaluated where the furnace was located in my crawl space and advised that the price would be $8000. Two days later his written proposal came in at $10,000. When I asked him about the difference, he said that he had forgotten to add in how labor intensive my particular installation would be. He was certain it would go into a second day. I took him at his word. It took the workmen less than 6 hours to complete the job. The salesman and head of the company - now called Walrath Mechanical - refuse to talk to me about the $2000 extra I was charged for labor that was not required. This is a scam. I have since noted on Yelp that I am not the only reviewer of Walrath who trusted a grossly inflated bid. These guys are crooks. Homeowners like me and managers of commercial properties may have once appreciated this small company. Don't be fooled - they no longer care about you.

My only gripe (for which I knocked off a star) is that they are very expensive, even as plumbers go. They charged $857 for a 1-1/4 hour job, for which I provided the materials. One nice feature, though, is that they do flat-rate pricing based on the job and not on time, so you know in advance how much it is going to cost.

Another one wouldn't turn on and he told me that was normal and I just needed to flip the breaker in the electrical panel a few times whenever I wanted to turn it on. Within a couple of years, two of the mini split units had pulled several inches away from the wall and looked as though they might fall. I asked him to fix them and he put me off for two months, saying he'd be there that day and then not showing. I gave him several opportunities to fix the problems and he finally just ghosted me. I had two other companies give me second opinions and ended up hiring one of them to do the repairs and they discovered just how shoddy the original work had been. Drain lines were spliced together, kinked and sagging, which accounted for the leaking units. The electrical lines were spliced together and interrupted with a random junction box. The electrical connections in the condenser had barely been tightened down which was why the unit often wouldn't turn on. Refrigerant was leaking at the floor fittings in the condenser. The head units had been secured with only two screws each, into drywall with no anchors. No wonder they had come loose. Save yourself the hassle and don't go for the cheapest bid out there.
