One of their men came out to look at the tree on our house. They said they could do the job but gave us no estimate. This maybe partly our fault because we were just grateful to get someone to come out after the storm because we knew other people were in need of tree services too. They came after 2days which was fine because the tree did not penetrate through our metal roof. Thank goodness for that. So the crane came but had to wait for the crew to show up . It did take almost all day to do the job. There was no bill that day. About a week later we received a bill of $30,000 plus for the work. It was One tree! My husband called because we thought it was a mistake. They said they could adjust it so now only$26,000 for the job. Our insurance gave us a check for all the work that was needed to be done other than the tree. We had to pay out of pocket a few thousand dollars to have the other things done. The tree company did not remove the tree or do a good job cleaning up. So if you use Able make sure you get in writing what they are going to do for you and the cost. I wish we knew more of what to do in this type of emergency.

I should have known better…read more Even though I found it strange that both the bookkeeper/dispatcher (wife?) and the owner/tree-trimmer (husband?) seemed to only have one tone of voice -- pissed-off SHOUTING -- I am not one to judge. Even though upon meeting the owner/tree-trimmer when getting the bid, he appeared to be somewhat "Appellation" in his XL frame, dirty work coveralls, and sporting the stereotypical incomplete dental grill, I am not one to judge. People come in all types and I believe deserve the same respect of anyone else. Besides, these folks came highly recommended by a neighbor. I should have trusted my instincts. I accepted a bid to remove two trees on my property and possible a third and forth on a fence line shared with an adjacent property once my neighbor (NOT the neighbor who recommended these people) was alerted to the work. Our house was on the market, and so a Tuesday job was scheduled primarily because we had a Sunday open house scheduled. The neighbor expressed interest in having other trees on his property removed at the time the crew was there for an allegedly nominal fee ("I'll have my crew and cherry picker there already, so I won't charge much"), and we would divvy up the bill accordingly. Simple enough, right? At 7:30 pm on the Friday night prior to the Tuesday that the tree removal was scheduled, I received a phone call from the dispatcher. Frantic, and demanding that I come home and pay the owner for the trees that had just been removed from my fenced-in back yard. A bit flabbergasted, as I was enjoying a relaxing evening out on the town with friends and family, I rushed home to find the Workman Tree Service truck outside my home with about 350 lbs of pissed off owner in the truck. After being verbally assaulted about not being present during the work and demanding payment, the owner followed me into my fenced-in (and somewhat impenetrable) backyard. There, I saw a hurricane-like disaster of wood chips, sawdust and branches all over the backyard. Of the two trees that were supposed to have been removed, one had been, but the other was trimmed of all branches with just an 8 foot section of trunk standing like a lonely Midwestern saguaro. The trees that my neighbor and I were going to split the cost of removing had been trimmed off willy-nilly (and looking like utter rubbish) at my fence line. Sawdust and wood chips were covering the water feature (which I was planning on covering with a tarp on Tuesday), clogging the filter. Several beds of tulips and daffodils were trampled and broken. Apparently, these idiots ripped down the fence of an adjacent vacant house, brought their cherry picker up to my property and scaled our privacy fence to get into my yard and did their deed. After surveying the damage, seeing that the work was NOT satisfactory and even incomplete, the owner and his employee refused to leave until they got paid. And it would cost an extra $50 to complete the work as agree upon. Feeling outnumbered, enraged, and a little buzzed from my Friday night dinner I capitulated and wrote a check to get the belligerent chainsaw-wielding giant off my property and away from my family. I promptly canceled the check though, and am weighing options with my legal counsel. Seeing how work WAS performed, I feel that I owe them something. How much, however, will depend on whether or not laws were broken (trespassing? intimidation?), if there was a substantial breech of contract, and then factor for property damage and additional work needed to remove the trees, if needed. Bottom line: these people are criminally negligent and shouldn't be allowed anywhere NEAR heavy machinery, children, or pets... let alone chainsaws!!!
