Special Rigatoni in vodka sauce with lump crabmeat
John J.

Borghi's has been consistently good in our visits: delicious food at reasonable shore prices and excellent service. This visit was no exception. Lana was a wonderful waitress. She was friendly, attentive, helpful, and let us set the pace. Love the BYOB The warm bread they provide with garlic pesto is a delicious start. We enjoyed the special calamari for an appetizer. The calamari was lightly fried and tender; served on marinara. Salads followed with delicious homemade creamy vinaigrette and Caesar dressings. For our entrees we had the evening special rigatoni with vodka sauce and lump crabmeat and the lobster ravioli. Both were excellent and we took half home. Found room for the pound cake with vanilla ice cream - again delicious. We recommend everything we had.

Excellent service and very good food. Restaurant was small but comfortable. Desserts were fantastic!

Special with lobster, shrimp, scallops and angel hair pasta

Just went here for dinner for my dad's birthday and can't rave about this place enough. They were very accommodating to our large party, served everything promptly and the food was outstanding! Everything from the salads to dinner to dessert was perfection. A nice cozy local spot a short walk away from the main street but definitely worth the excursion (and it was nice and peaceful since it wasn't surrounded by other shops and restaurants). We will definitely come back the next time we're in town!

Hostess tried to seat us in what we saw as the worst available table but to her credit moved us to a better table immediately when asked. Shouldn't have had to ask. Service was very well organized. It could have been timelier when checking on status on when trying to pay the bill, but it was friendly and fine. Love the BYOB. Next day surprised and disappointed to find a 3% "convenience" charge on the bill they didn't tell or warn me about. It wasn't convenient! No idea what it was for. Paid by Visa which I believe charges merchants 2%. Was I supposed to pay in cash?? French fries were excellent - some of the best. Very good fried oyster Po'boy. Exceptional coleslaw. Large crab cake sandwich with good flavor. Thought the parmesan oyster appetizer was pretty good but overpriced for only 6 medium sized oysters. Steamer appetizer was excellent with lots of clams and a great broth. Most seafood entrees seemed overpriced (inflation impacted I assume), so we went with sandwiches. Loved the live music and his song selection, but a bit loud making it hard to converse at the same time.

When I looked around me at the dining room, it did not seem possible that I could be sitting 4 miles away from where I live, or 7 miles away from the house I grew up in. Cape May Court House has never been known for upscale dining; but Provence just arrived here, and I want to thank them for elevating my hometown and bringing some culture and elegance to the South Jersey Shore. We were able to book a reservation because this wonder has not yet been discovered by the summer vacationers from PA, but once NYC gets wind of this place, I know we will not be so lucky. In the meantime, however, I have Provence as an option, and I could not be more euphoric. The Chef's name is Adam Bowen, and he brings to you a six-course tasting menu. The service is exactly perfect in theory, but still has some small issues to work out in practice. This is because this restaurant and B&B just arrived on the planet, and we cannot hold such a new establishment to the same standard as, say, Peter Shields or the Ebbitt Room, who have been serving Cape May diners for decades. What the new servers lack in execution is made up for by Kal, the maître d', who is clearly perfecting the front of the house during Provence's infant stages. Last night was the very first night of the new menu, which changes every two to three weeks, so I was expecting some trial-and-error, some slight imperfections, or missteps. What I got was this: A gorgeous Amuse of Cucumber and Leek Vichyssoise poured over Crabmeat with Mint and Avocado Foam which was followed by "The Bread Course"--something that tasted like a perfect Caprese Salad and a perfect Bruscietta had a baby in heaven. It wasn't either of these things, of course; it was Soft Crostini served with Basil Oil, notes of Boursin Cheese, and Roasted Red Peppers. Then came the first course. It was Octopus, but it was unlike any Octopus you've ever had. It was a Terrine--served cold--with Lemon Foam, Honeyed Hazelnuts, Piquillo Peppers, Frizzled Chickpeas, and a Tomato Marmalade. By this point, I was starting to understand the breathtaken reviews I had read about this restaurant. Course 2 was an absolutely perfect. Risotto with impossibly tender Lamb and Summer Peas. Think Ricotta infused with Lemon and Basil, Mushrooms, and Carrots, in a Green Sauce. Stunning and perfect. For dinner, you choose between the Chilean Sea Bass with Roasted Beets, Cucumbers, and Green Garlic or the Pork Cheek Bourguignon with White Beans, Fennel, and Parsnips. This fish will have you making pleasant sounds. The Pork Cheek may have been the most stunning bite of the night, but who knows when you have been bombarded by flavor since the beginning. The Dessert Course by Chef Allison Seelaus was the perfect end to the perfect meal. Again, you choose between the light and fresh Honey Mascarpone Peach served with Almond Oats and White Wine Reduction or the decadent but approachable Espresso Chocolate Fudge with an Espresso-Mocha Mousse and a Coffee Macaron. This place is BYOB, so don't forget to plan your pairings accordingly when you are ready to have your mind blown by Cape May Court House's new Fine Dining Explosion. You'll see.

This year we decided to return for our anniversary and I'm sad to say this was our last visit to Provence. What a disappointment! We started with a $9 bread basket and the inside of the bread was frozen! We told our server and they brought us a new one at the same time as our appetizers. They really should have taken off the bill. We didn't even eat it. The appetizers (mussels, lobster ravioli, and french onion soup with mushrooms) were very good. The entrees were awful. The trout was really salmon (I know the difference although it can be subtle). It was overcooked and served with overcooked cous cous and frozen, shriveled peas. The short rib was over salted and topped with banana pepper slices straight from the jar and some kind of salty chips over a parsnip, mashed potato yuckiness. Also, we noted on the reservation that this was a birthday and anniversary dinner and it wasn't even acknowledged by the staff. It's evident the "chef" was not the same as our last visit. The food and the service were below average at best. It's a shame.

Dearest Gentle reader,…read more a spectacular view was in order for a very special lunch desired by one of mine tiny members of the household. I was not warmly welcomed by a hostess beginning with the letter B. As she sat my table down, I had a simple request and was told by this young lady to ask someone else or to do it myself. Cold is an understatement. However, I will say this... very quickly after, a gentleman by the name of Martin was very swift and accommodating which made that cold treating quickly forgotten. Our waitress Shannon was a delight as well while giving us some splendid recommendations in which we did not regret. I thank these two lovely people for making the experience better afterwards. Yours truly, Lady Whistledown (critic)

Our friends have frequented this place before and said they don't take them, but at my insistence, since it was a holiday weekend, we stopped and my friends husband went in to inquire. He was told "no reservations needed, but please come back after 6:30 as there is currently a cocktail hour for a wedding going on". That was no problem as it was 5 and we wanted to freshen up. We arrived at 7.....and the hostess told us she couldn't seat us because we had no reservation. My friends' husband told the young lady the conversation he had with a lady inside the hotel and the hostess said that wasn't her problem. My friend spoke up and said the hotel website even states that reservations aren't needed to which the hostess stated it wasn't her website.....my friend lost it, telling the hostess that the website is the hotels and that the hotel is her employer making it her website. She then turned her tablet around to show my friend all the reservations that they had and told us to eat elsewhere. At this point my friend's husband went inside to speak with a manager and saw the lady he spoke to a few hours before who said she didn't remember telling him he didn't need a reservation. We were eventually greeted by a young man who apologized for the inconvenience, stated the website had been updated to accept reservations and he'd see what he could do for us. My friend immediately looked at the website, again, and the reservation button led to hotel accommodations. The young man offered to seat us inside and that's when I spoke up and said we were from CA and wanted to sit by the water. He didn't like that but he did seat us. The view at sunset was amazing, our waitress was wonderful, the food was mediocre and the entire experience with the hostess and management soured our evening.

It was cooked perfectly. The ketchup, mustard, pickles and fried red onions added a lot of flavor. It was delicious. The fried calamari was also cooked perfectly. It was lightly breaded and very tasty! I had a glass of Pinot noir that was very good. The table next to us had a very good charcuterie board from the regular menu with enough food for 3 people.

The last time we dined at "Sax At The Reeds" was soon after they opened, and it had not been good. My entree on that first visit had been so inedible, I took one bite and left the rest. That may have been a first for me. It was that bad. I didn't even ask for something else; I was so disgusted. This most recent experience was considerably improved. My wife and I were celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary a few days late, and when prompted during the reservation process, I had checked the box for "special occasion" without thinking much about it. It seemed rather incidental, but I thought it couldn't hurt. The staff at Sax did not disappoint. When we arrived at the front desk, the sharply-dressed gentleman working the host stand was engaging and personable, and when we answered that we did indeed have reservations, he guessed our name and welcomed us and congratulated us on our anniversary. He asked if we preferred a special table and offered a window seat if we liked. If we'd known they had a fireplace, we probably would have chosen to sit in front of that, but the window seat was lovely. We were soon greeted by Patrick, our server for the evening, and he arrived with two flutes of sparkling wine on the house and wished us a happy anniversary. Patrick was an animated and exuberant server who definitely knew his job, understood the food and wine, and had strong opinions about the menu. We were never in need of anything, but also never felt overwhelmed by his presence. A good balance. My wife began with the broiled oysters, which were phenomenal, and I had the steakhouse salad, which was surprisingly good for being an original take on a simple wedge. It was exactly what I wanted and a perfect size. Not too big or small and elegantly presented. For our entrees, Jane ordered the crab-stuffed flounder with lobster sauce on a bed of risotto, which she thoroughly enjoyed even though it's not something she would typically order. Jane has a very critical palette and is a great cook herself, so she's not easily pleased. She thought it was a delicious, well-balanced dish. I had been craving steak, an uninspiring selection, so I ordered the NY Strip with maître d'hôtel butter. While we enjoyed our wine, Patrick returned to offer me a choice of five different knives, displayed in a wooden box. He explained each one and asked for my choice. I told him I would go with his recommendation, and I got something simple called "The Knife," a hand-hammered piece of fine cutlery. The steak was perfectly cooked, although I personally found it under-seasoned. I like a salty finish on my red meat, so Patrick promptly brought me a small dish of fleur de sel, and we were in business. My sides were whipped potatoes and carrots, both of which were good, but the potatoes were presented as if plated with a large ice cream scoop, which made them appear fake diner potatoes. Even Jane called it out as an unusual choice. The carrots were perfectly cooked and had an almost citrus finish. For wine, we had selected a Chardonnay chosen by the sommelier as a special for the evening, and it was good but not transcendent, while the Chappallet red blend on the menu was absolutely exquisite. Powerful and smooth with a great finish. For dessert, I had planned to order the warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream that I had seen on the website, but it wasn't available. Instead, we ordered something called the Dubai Cheesecake. Dubai chocolate was something I was vaguely aware of, but wasn't entirely sure what it was. Patrick assured us that while the dish was hard to describe in terms of a flavor profile, it was a killer bit of confection. He wasn't wrong. It was crunchy and creamy, complex in its simplicity. A transformative dish, and we're not even big dessert people. I won't pretend that any of this was a bargain, but excellence rarely is. I'll admit to a bit of sticker shock when the bill arrived, so be prepared to drop a few bills. But if you're looking for great service and food, you won't find anything better at the Jersey Shore than Sax at the Reeds. It's worth a special trip.
