We saw this place as we were leaving Tennessee and I had to stop. It was the sign "Bootleggers" Distillery that got to me. I am not a whiskey drinker, but my husband is. Derek is the nicest guy and explained how he makes the whiskey and how the recipe has been in his family for years. How can you not like the level of that family tradition. He offers free samples, but I told him I do not like whisky, he told me just try it. OMG, it was the best whisky I ever tasted. Bootleggers was a really cool find on a road trip I recently took. I stopped here really because my gut told me I'd like it, and I was right. It's small and I was the only person inside since made the experience even better. You get three samples for free, but can pay money for extra. I knew three would be enough for me. I tried the pineapple, coffee, and cherry and all were delicious. If I wasn't driving I would have had more, that's for sure. Pricing for each bottle is listed easily for you to see. The guy working as your bartender or sales person was really nice. Answered questions about the moonshine and overall was really helpful. Note: they are cash only. This place is a gimmick. We sampled their moonshine, which had a strong alcohol taste. Then when we bought the moonshine it did not taste as strong at all. We brought it home and stuck it in the freezer. Because moonshine is a higher proof, it is not supposed to freeze (like most alcohol). However, sadly, ours did. They are not selling real moonshine. The samples are definitely real. But do not buy the moonshine. read more

We stopped here at the recommendation of our boat guide James Michael Webb ar Big Creek Expeditions. If you come from the boat tours they offer a special 3 shot tasting. A number of our group got this and the rest got the 10 shot tasting for 5 dollars. Both we great, they definitely did not worry about counting and were very generous. They let us taste what we wanted. We also got moonshine slushies which reminded us of our Louisiana daiquiri shops. Not a huge fan of moonshine, but the slushies were great. read more

We randomly stopped her along our journey to visit family and omg it was the best decision we have ever made. Derek greeted us when we opened the door. He was such a friendly guy. He explained the different types of moonshine he makes and told us about his Paw Paws special recipe. He offered us a variety of taste samples. After we made a purchase he offered us on a small tour around his distillery as my girlfriend has never been to one before, to show us his process. He then gave us a shot right out of the tap which I had never done before either. Such a wonderful place and the moonshine is SOOOOOO good. Found this by accident because of a GPS snafu. Didn't spend a lot of time because of being behind schedule but we got a couple free samples and bought a couple of premise bottled cocktails. What a nice little treat this unplanned pitstop was! Was in route moving from St. Louis to Charlotte and as I was several miles from the border of TN/NC I noticed a billboard that said BOOTLEGGERS DISTILLERY - FREE SAMPLES! I was sold at Free Samples! Plus I needed to stop and stretch my legs. It was a tiny little store front, not much room to move around or wonder. But you don't need much room to take a few shots. They even have this cool map where everyone who comes in puts a pin on where they're from. Not much to it, but cute little place. They have several flavors and proofs, as I like to refer to "a little something for everyone." Everything from high proof straight moonshine to low proof apple pie... and of course everything in between! My favorites were the apple, peach and sweet shine. Liked the sweet shine the best. We're in the middle of nowhere TN, so of course it's CA$H ONLY folks. Don't worry they have an ATM just incase ;) Pricing of moonshine and merch is spot on to other moonshine companies. So definitely not overpriced. The only complaint I have is that I have to drive 3 hours to get more! Although I wouldn't mind going back to have that good looking guy pour me more moonshine, it would be nice to be able to have it delivered with the click of a button! Don't forget... For best results, breathe deeply, shoot it back, let it settle for a few seconds and then breathe out. Mmmmm... the taste of that sweet shine! read more

We tasted a LOT of samples on vacation and this is the BEST by far! The moonshine has actual fruit in it. It is a small family owned business. Very friendly and you get a souvenir glass if you do the 10 for $5. For less than $10 I got the glass, 10 samples and one the nest pina colada slushees I have had in a long time. Cash only but they have an ATM on site. We only ran across this place on our way to raft so it is off the beaten path but well worth the stop. Nice little rustic shop with outdoor seating to relax and enjoy your beverage. read more

We had a terrific visit here! The gentleman behind the counter was very knowledgeable and really friendly. He took his time explaining the moonshine process to us and even offered to show us where everything happens. We sampled quite a few of the products and realized moonshine made right, can be quite tasty. We really enjoyed the Sweetshine, the Apple (when warmed), the jalapeño (Bloody Mary's for sure!) and think the Pineapple is going to make a great summer drink. Unexpected visit after we had a nice tasting down the road at Goodwater Winery. Drove up to a man in overalls rocking on the front porch! Could have been all for show, but he had the look and feel of a local (speaking as one myself, more or less). Turns out he was the distiller and really knew his stuff! Had a great, but short, conversation with him and the female attendant before the small tasting space was overrun with visitors! The two tasting bars, small but sufficient, quickly served the needs of the dozen or do visitors from 3-4 different groups who came in while we were there. My husband did the full tasting - 12 shines, plus 3 cocktails I think - I only sampled a few sweet shines. Flavors were good, without being too strong, and didn't overpower my wine palate. Left with 3 quarts, including jalapeño, a surprise since neither I nor my husband usually prefers spicy or the taste of jalapeño. Rating 4 stars due to fact they only accept cash. There is an ATM inside, but before you visit plan to have cash in hand or money in the bank, no AmEx-ing this tasting! read more

Originally went to that area for white rafting, but got there very early. So went exploring and came across a small little building called " Bootleggers". Was not expecting what came next. I have one word for Bootleggers, WOW, my wife and I lovers of moonshine and we have tried them all, we were fans of Ole Smokey first and thought it was great then tried Sugarlands and thought that was way better, in addition we tried some of the other smaller distilleries and kept going back to Sugarlands. We recently found Bootleggers and no comparison from the quality of the shine, their rum everything, the staff is incredible, very customer friendly. Oils not recommend them more!!!!! read more

Bootleggers Distillery has been one of the best stops on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail. Although it is located off the beaten path and in a small building, don't be mistaken. The owners and distillers are masters of the craft and produce some of the best corn liquor I have ever tasted. That is saying a lot coming from one that knows the history, the processes, the product. Shan gave us a tour and provided insider information on the mashing and cook processes. Their corn liquor is outstanding. The warm Apple Pie was the surprise of the trip. Good people, great place to visit. We left with several quarts and memories of an excellent visit. read more

This quirky and out of the way moonshine distillery was a pleasant stop for my brother and I as we were searching for firewood. The owner went out of his way to call his friend who could deliver us firewood around 9 pm. While my brother and I waited, we sampled flavors like salted caramel and lemon drop. The moonshine was unique and sweet. The location was small but cozy with lots of unique and funny gifts. They also offer tours, though we did not go on one. read more
