Slowly, but surely, these classes have transformed my physical health and life over the past 2 years. I love the individualized attention he gives me (and everyone in the class!). He's extremely experienced and skilled. Coming to my first class totally out of shape, 57 years old, and overweight, I was concerned about injuring myself. But with Coach B I always feel safe, heard, and like he has my highest interests at heart. Imo, there is no price tag on that. He also knows when to push me, so I challenge myself and don't only stay in my comfort zone. Slowing, but surely, I am building muscle, getting toned, and getting closer to my healthy weight range. The other "Bootcampers" are incredibly warm, welcoming, and friendly. There is zero judgement and lots of support, laughs, and even free coffee. Lastly, he will let you try out your first class for free. No commitment, strings or obligation. If interested, go here: https://www.thecityisourgym.com/ and click on "free bootcamp class". There are 3 locations. My favorite is Ocean Beach!

Coach B is extremely knowledgable (nutrition, kinesiology, physiology, etc.), personable, and genuinely cares about creating a varied, interesting, engaging workout for people of all fitness levels. He's always willing to tailor group classes, so modifications can be made if you want to push harder or you need less intensity. He also fosters a sense of community I have not found with any other exercise group. It only takes a class or two to not only feel like a part of the family, but also to get a sense of Coach B's expertise and sincere interest in the health and well being of his clients. I can't recommend the City is Our Gym highly enough!

When I went away to college, I realized how unhealthy I was and how unhealthy my family's lifestyle was. So I started changing up my diet and looking for physical activity that I would enjoy. I had gotten up to running 25-30 miles a week in less than a year! Running became my way to relax, unwind, think about everything and nothing at all. And then I moved on to graduate school. Time became the essence. I had none! i stopped cooking, stopped running, stopped it all! Over 4 years later, I found 02 Athletics in February 2010. It became a new commitment, a lifestyle change, and a desire to better myself. The class itself consists of what I can only describe as "madness"! Seriously... People like to be told, "it gets easier". Well i'm a realist and i will tell u that it does NOT! It only gets harder, but you learn to challenge urself to do things u would never imagine tackling! I never considered myself a sprinter, and here I am sprinting with the guys in the class and hanging more often than not. I woulda never imagined myself doing a set of tricep push-ups, not to mention the upside down, one-handed and slap push-ups. Everyday, I feel like I have room to improve, and everyday, I feel better that I have improved! The instructor is an MMA fighter. He loves what he does as a fighter, but I think he loves more the changes he makes as an instructor. In such a large city as SF, u get used to impersonal fitness groups. But James is in it for much more than the chump (and it really is chump) change. I personally challenge u to find a cheaper bootcamp! He will pull u aside, give u tips on ur kickboxing technique, motivate u to better urself, and literally boost ur confidence. He really watches out for u. He also continues to look for ways to motivate you to be a better athlete, a more confident individual, and an overall better person! Bottom line - you know this bootcamp means something more than a work-out when: 1) I've been using yelp for 4 years, and this bootcamp is my 1st review EVER! 2) I now change my work schedule, social plans, and everything in between to make as many classes as I can 3) I choose to hang out with these work out people because we cover the spectrum - different cultures, different fields of work (from healthcare to media to law enforcement to art ...), different skill levels, but we all have one thing in common - we're over-achievers who push the limits! Are u an over-achiever? Try it out, and u'll never look back... NO EXCUSES!

I just moved into the inner sunset so I had to search for a new gym to belong to. I searched long and hard on Yelp as I compared certain gyms in the neighborhood looking at what they had to offer as well as price and customer reviews. 02 Athletics stood out to me almost immediately so I figured "why not" and signed up to attend a trial class. Later that same day, I got a voicemail on my phone from James (the instructor) inviting me to try it out. His voice had the booming quality of Billy Blanks (The kickboxing DVD guy) and the slight insane intonation of Shaun T (the INSANITY DVD) guy. I knew this was going to be INTENSE. If you are ready to be pushed like you've never been pushed before THIS IS THE BOOTCAMP FOR YOU. If you are ready to be apart of an awesomely diverse group of people THIS IS THE BOOTCAMP FOR YOU. If you are ready to meet people who are super cool and down to earth, but who you would NEVER want to piss off in a dark alley THIS IS THE BOOTCAMP FOR YOU. If you are ready to learn how to become one of the people mentioned above THIS IS THE BOOTCAMP FOR YOU. If you are ready to have an ass that someone could bounce a quarter off of THIS IS THE BOOTCAMP FOR YOU. (I'm getting there!) I would not waste my time and money to wake up and get my ass handed to me at 6am unless it was AWESOME. I can't say enough good things about James and the people in 02 Athletics! He truly cares about your progress and the pre-workout texts help keep me accountable!

Ladies, don't let the term "bootcamp" deter you from trying this type of workout. I am in the…read moresouthbeach group and was directed to it from fellow yelpers. VyAyr (although admittedly I continue to struggle with spelling it) consists of an amazing group of devoted, funny, and knowledgeable instructors. The routines are by no means "routine," so you can always expect a whole body workout, which keeps you guessing. Yet, you can go at your own pace to ensure you do as much as you are presently fit for. VyAyr puts the ASS (all shapes and sizes) in class. So if you are hesitant because you lack athletic skills or have fallen so far off the wagon the dust has settled since you last saw it round the corner of your hips, this is the class that can help you buy a ticket to the health train. Besides, who rides in wagons anyways- I mean if our ancestors could have chosen to take a train or a car instead of covered wagon to cross the states... Also, a note on something VyAyr does which I find so great- they take an initial body assesment prior to each camp. This short, private, office-type meeting with your instructor puts your current size and your goals into quanitifable measures. They take weight (yeah yeah, ugh), measurements (bust, waist, hips thighs, legs, arms, calves), and calipers (body fat percentage) and create and excel sheet for you. This small detail is actually what has personally motivated me to start eating healthier and limit alcohol intake, because for me, seeing positive results is incentive to assume a more comprehensive lifestyle change. The one hour classes in Soutbeach are at 6am and 7am, and at Crissy field at 5:30 and 6:30am. Free classes if you need a test drive, but consider just committing to it. The price for the whole four week camps are 200 for 3 days a week, 260 for 4 days a week and 300 for 5 days a week. Cheaper than dinner for two at Epic Roasthouse. Crap, now I'm hungry.

Waking up early is not my thing, working out is not my thing, but I go and I do it and I'm done for the day. I don't even go regularly - I have skipped a few sessions - and I lost a size already in six weeks. Seriously. I like to say Kristi motivates with shame and humiliation but really it's sarcasm and humor. She never shames, even today when my body fat composition was twice what it should be, I did not feel like she was secretly judging me from inside her mini triathlete body. Rather, I felt motivated to sign up for my third session. DAMN YOU KRISTI!

The fountain of youth I remember reading several…read moretestimonials before joining accelerate that sounded too good to be true. Believe me, this place lives up to the hype. Jack and his team are on another level. I've worked with all sorts of trainers and physical therapists over the years. I've received strength and conditioning coaching as a college athlete, worked with several PTs rehabbing injuries over the years, I've done personal training at high-end gyms, and also done deep research when crafting my own personal work outs. All of it pales in comparison. The training at accelerate is phenomenal. Starting with an immensely detailed intake covering goals and a full history, they created a program tailored to me. These workouts are legitimately FUN, I've genuinely said that to my friends when i rave to them about this place. Moreover, the coaching and correction you receive while working out is unparalleled. Any time there's a new exercise in my program, the team walks me through it. As I master it, I get tips and corrections. I'd say I unlock an extra 150% out of each movement thanks to the cues that in-the-moment coaching. And the proof is in the pudding - it really WORKS. As an example, for the better part of a decade I've dealt with unresolvable knee pain from a skiing injury. Doctors and PTs never figured it out, but within 6 weeks at ASP I'd legitimately forgotten about it - Jack had to remind me. The combination of rehab, prehab, and focus on functional strength have made a perceptible difference in my resilience as a big air kiteboarder. I've taken crashes where i expected to be injured based on past experience and was surprised to bounce back up feeling completely fine. Within the first month of working out, i mentioned to several friends that my body felt several years younger - which is wild considering all the effort I'd been putting into designing and following my own workouts in the months before joining. This place is the real deal. It is one of the best things you can do for yourself. If you're at all on the fence, just go for it, you won't regret it. ---- Update 1 year later: When I initially joined ASP, it was because I'm a kiteboarder (an old one at that) and was looking to do some training to reduce my chances of injuries from the sport. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I had brachial neuritis (an autoimmune disease that attacked a nerve for my shoulder) - which started a month or two before i went in for my initial assessment at ASP. The nerve damage led to acute muscle atrophy in my shoulder and an inability to recruit the muscles. The team at ASP helped me find the diagnosis, and over the next year, we focused on shoulder stability and strengthening work. My shoulders are now more stable than ever and I'm pain free, to the point where my neurologist was commenting on the speed of my recovery. The team is super knowledgeable, and was setting me up with all sorts of exercises that dramatically accelerated my recovery. I can't recommend this place enough, whether you have an injury or not.

Joining ASP is one of the most positive changes I've made in years…read more I arrived at my ASP assessment five months ago with a healthy dose of skepticism. Joining a high-end, high-commitment gym felt like an unlikely choice for me. I'd spent most of my life avoiding gyms, preferring to run or bike outside instead. As a busy working mom, it didn't feel realistic--it seemed like something for people with more time or more fitness bandwidth than I had. At that point, I was dealing with chronic plantar fasciitis that had become noticeable with every step. I had tried everything--physical therapy, orthotics, acupuncture, thicker shoes, toe spacers, and more--but nothing fully resolved it. I knew I needed a more fundamental change if I wanted to stay active. The ASP assessment was incredibly thorough. We discussed my heel pain, recurring hip pain, radial nerve irritation in my arm, and a long history of lingering injuries. The team listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions, and tested movement patterns as we talked. They were like body detectives, looking across systems rather than treating isolated symptoms. They identified that an ankle fracture from 15 years ago had likely set off a chain of compensations that we could address through targeted strengthening. Within the first phase of the program, my heel pain was gone. After years of living with it, I was honestly floored. I could walk without constantly thinking about my feet, which felt like a huge improvement in my quality of life. Around the same time, the nerve issue in my arm--something I'd lived with for years--was also resolved. It felt like years of accumulated aches and pains were being systematically cleared away. From there, we shifted toward my goal of running Bay to Breakers, my first race. The programming combined corrective work, strength, core stability, agility, and structured running. When pain resurfaced after introducing running, we retrained my gait and corrected movement patterns that had been contributing to my hip pain. In the end, I ran the entire race from start to finish--the longest distance I'd ever run continuously--at a pace I felt proud of, with no rebound pain afterward. More importantly, I had fun. I can now run outside again simply because I enjoy it, without pain. While I'm not sure I'll run a marathon, I now believe I could if I wanted to. The biggest changes weren't even on my original list. Once I started showing up consistently, I began paying more attention to nutrition, prioritizing sleep, and feeling happier and more present in every part of my life. Taking care of my health became the foundation that everything else was built around. The accountability and flexibility of ASP's training model have been essential to my consistency. Booking sessions each week keeps me committed in a way I've never managed on my own. There's always someone available to coach, answer questions, and correct my form. At the same time, the model is refreshingly flexible. Life happens--you can run late, step out for a call, or reschedule from morning to evening on the same day. That flexibility also creates a great culture. Because there's no lengthy commitment at sign-up, the gym is full of members who want to be there. There's laughter, camaraderie, and good music, making it a place I genuinely look forward to visiting. The most valuable part of ASP is the coaching team. Jack, Dominique, and Jared are knowledgeable, attentive, and deeply invested in their clients' success. They met me where I was, adapted the program when needed, and kept me accountable throughout. My goals became their goals, and that made all the difference. If you've been struggling with chronic pain or have started wondering whether your body simply can't do the things it used to, I can't recommend ASP highly enough. It has been among the best investments I've ever made in my health, and I'm incredibly grateful I gave it a chance.

My background is that of a former competitive athlete (volleyball) through high school and into college. That however was a long time ago and my own personal fitness efforts veered to that of a standard loop through the gym with a little cardio and weights; and in more recent years, yoga. I've been lucky enough to be able to maintain a fairly fit physic, without too much effort, for most of my life. But I noticed that shifting about 2 years ago. I needed to step up my game, but lacked the motivation to really do it on my own. A shoulder injury a year and a half ago (obtained while playing with my then 6 year old daughter) sidelined all gym activity. After a year of yoga, I just wasn't seeing the results I wanted. I needed to get moving again, which prompted a game changing decision, and I walked into Raul's class. First off, Golden Gate Park...could anyone ask for a more stunning backdrop to workout in? No TV's, no smelly gym, no cell phones. It's one of my favorite places in the City, and I get to workout here! And you will workout! Strawberry Hill, a set of stairs, park benches, and your body weight is literally all Raul needs to give you an unreal workout. Of course, he has kettles bells, tractor tires, and barbells that he likes to mix into workouts as well. Everyday is different. Every workout brings something new that has us asking, how did he come up with this, and what will he bring tomorrow? The group atmosphere is one of the key components for me. I like being part of a team, I like having a "coach", I like have that comradery and motivation from within the group. They support you, they push you, they hold you accountable (even when Raul isn't looking) It pushes you to fight through fatigue, to get those last 2 reps in, and at the end of the hour, it's something we've all done together. Raul's knowledge of the human body, how to work the muscles, to get the optimum performance out of them, is incredible. That coupled with his medical training makes him the perfect trainer if you are injured, or needing rehab. He can have 4 different workouts going in the same hour to adapt to a physical limitation someone may have in class. He is bringing my shoulder back after nearly 2 years of chronic pain. I not only feel it, I see it. I'm stronger, I'm leaner, I have endurance I haven't had in years. If you're looking to change your life physically, come meet us in the park. You won't be sorry.

Forget the fact that I'm in my 40's and in the best shape of my entire life, thanks to workouts with Raul and San Francisco Strength & Conditioning. His outdoor group exercise class in Golden Gate Park (and at his nearby studio!) completely sets the tone for my entire day. It's SO awesome to be outdoors in nature for an entire hour, exercising alongside of some really cool people I've gotten to know. And whether they all realize it or not, they help hold me accountable for showing up and doing the the work. And by "work", it's actually more like "fun"! Raul is incredibly creative in coming up with different workout routines, so it NEVER gets boring. Some days he'll show up with boxing equipment, and we spend and hour throwing punches and doing crunches. Another day there'll be a truck tire that we have to strike with a sledgehammer, or a competition between two teams to see who can finish a list of exercises first. OMG. SO. FUN!!! (I snapped some pics recently during one of our competitions, and will post them here). The best part of it all really, is the value that you get for your money. Working out with SF S&C is like having a personal trainer, because that's how engaged Raul is with each person's individual workout, form, technique, etc. And if someone has an injury or physical challenge, he ALWAYS remembers, and offers them a modification. A good personal trainer in San Francisco will run you $125+ per HOUR. Eek! But I get to work out 4 days a week PLUS an optional free Saturday workout, PLUS free studio workouts to target specific areas or injuries, and per month, it costs me less than TWO sessions with a personal trainer who isn't half as good as Raul. SFS&C is the best investment in myself that I've ever made!
