One of my favourite Gyms in the city! What I don't like about this location and I try to avoid: There are a lot of kids and very noisy Lots of tournaments that affects parking and the whole experience Around 4-6 PM, there are a lot of high school students there and it's hard to do anything They are still using the old fashion wristbands for which are bad for environment! Other locations have started having reusable wristbands which are much better and easier. For the noise and crowd: I plan my workout time around rush hours and I completely avoid the place when there is a tournament. The customer service is awesome and the staff is always nice and helpful! I haven't had any bad experiences related to customer service! If you plan it right, you can enjoy your workouts here! I was at this place 2 weeks ago. Its in a nice part of town and it is a very nice rec center. I only tried the pool. Very spacious building with places to sit and eat after doing your workout, playing a game or going for a swim. Theres a sauna but you need a special membership,( somehow every city pool still beats the YMCA). There is a steam room though, which is big. Bigger then I thought at first, due to the steam blocking my vision. There is a big hot tub as well. The layout of the place is interesting. Easy to get lost the first time you go. The swimming lanes are sort of connected to the diving area. You have to swim under...I'm not sure what the word would be. But you can get there from the lanes. I would go back more often if this place wasn't out of the way for me. read more

the staff was straight up rude. me and my friend went to go workout so we paid for a bus to go there. when we got there the staff told us the gym admission fee assuming we were 16 (we are 16 in a few months), when she knew we weren't she started being so rude and telling us to drop the attitude when we were explaining how we work out here's lot. she was a horrible customer service representative and should know have that job if she will be rude to teenage customers. read more

Very rude Lifeguards in the pool. Its almost like kanye west and Jay Z gave birth to lifeguards. They treated us like shit when we met up with 2 ukrainian guys that go to the same institution as me and my friend , one of them goes right behind me on the slide and the lifeguards not only condescendly gave us a hard time for something that can just be avoided by "sorry he didnt know" , but they chose to be very rude and one of their supervisors were cursing at the other ukrainian. They have no respect for the visitors in the pool. This is why people pay taxes towards the city of edmonton to pay these social reject's their paychecks. They are the same jokes as Donald Trump running for 2024. read more

I've been coming here since I was 12; I'm 20 now so it's been a while. I'm pretty sure the same front desk lady has watched me grow up! Pros: -Early opening hours so great for before-work/school workouts -Free lockers with digital locks (they recently got rid of the 50 cent key ones) -Pool amenities are huge and the wave pools can get pretty intense -Gym has tons of new equipment -Gym has large windows and tons of natural light -Lots of drop-in class options and community events like the community skate Cons: -Wet locker rooms are a bit grimy (is it just me or does the family room smells like pee constantly?) -Gym is way too busy all the time unless it's early mornings -Parking can be hard to find -Not enough shower stalls to accommodate how busy the facility is All in all, it's a decent facility but it's way too busy all the time, no matter what day it is and the locker rooms can be a bit disgusting. However, you do have the option for the premium membership which is $90/month where you get fancier locker rooms with magnetic card access, private showers and toiletries, TV lounge, sauna, and towel service. This doesn't change the fact that there's never a free squat rack though :( read more

Absolutely love this rev centre the baby pool is lovely and warm a real relaxing and safe environment with a baby. The pool is HUGE it has waves on and off, whirl pool, lane pool, hot tub, diving pool, more lane pools aquatic pools and water slide. It can hold huge crowds but you don't feel it. It's by far the cleanest pool and changing rooms I've been to but yet the more expensive adult cost. It has many other great things on offer 4 or 5 ice rinks, running rooms, play gym, kids dip in care centre, adult gym, coffee shops. You buy a pass and then that will do you for the whole day so yes it is more expensive that other drop in pools when just bringing baby for a swim but I think it's worth it and it's the most enjoyable. read more

This is a great facility with just about everything you'd ever need. Gyms, ice rinks, pools, classrooms, kids rooms, and by far one of the best fitness centres in the city. Really great, basically brand new machines. And (although not applicable to me) they also have many special fitness machines for those with disabilities. There are many classes offered (yoga, dance, etc), although I have not yet tried one. All the facilities and the change rooms have always seemed really clean and safe, and the staff have always been friendly and helpful to me. I really like that the membership to city facilities have no contract or agreements like all the corporate-owned gyms do. Unfortunately to use the Terwillegar centre you have to buy the top level membership, but many companies and professional / trades / student organizations in Edmonton give discounts for their members. Membership to the Edmonton community leagues also gets you a discount (plus access to further stuff in your neighbourhood). Your rec centre membership gets you access to all the city facilities. And if you're just looking to try (or only want to go occasionally) you can just buy day entry. The only negative I can think about this place is that parking seems a little limited and weirdly set-up (a million handicap spots for some reason). But otherwise, I'm definitely not going back to my old gym. read more

Fantastic rec centre!! This complex boasts 4 ice rinks, a huge water playground (lap swimming, kiddie pool, and hot tubs), and a state-of-the-art cardio/weight area that is encompassed by the running track on the second floor. If you get hungry, you can trot down to the main floor and check out the Second Cup, Subway, or Dairy Queen. (Yeah, an ice cream place in a fitness complex?) Drop-in fee is a rather steep $10.50, but worth it to use such a nice facility. I'm sure there are tons of programs during the year for singles and families. I sort of wished I lived in town....I'd be here a LOT if I did! read more

I have had a membership at this rec centre for years now and I couldn't be happier with it. I really love how they are open super early in the mornings because I'm able to go and get some exercise before heading to work. They have multiple change rooms and most (if not all) of the lockers there are free! You don't even have to bring your own lock. There is always lots of staff available, even first thing in the morning. There are so many different kinds of fitness classes offered here that anyone can find something they love, they also have info about singing up with a personal trainer. It can become quite busy later in the day but you can usually get parking as they have 3 main lots plus I overflow. Membership prices are fairly reasonable, and you get a lot for what you pay for. read more

Due in part to fee extortion at the last gym I went to, I don't use locker rooms anymore. So, my more positive opinion of the Terwillegar Rec Centre may be swayed by not seeing the terror that is the change rooms. TCRC may be pricey and crowded (most working visitors will rarely find it less than busy), but it has a wide range to offer and a friendly staff that more than make up for these inconveniences. The cardio/weight area of the centre is where I spend most of my time, and it is fantastic. While I am somewhat hesitant to call it state-of-the-art (I've seen most of the equipment here at other facilities), it is very well-equipped, and clean. There are two large free-weight sections, a plethora of weight machines, stretching machines, and a matted area along with running and cycling machines. There is a TRX assembly and resistance cords as well for those so inclined. I do have a few griefs with the weight area - like other reviewers have stated, it is not logically laid out, many of the machines (arms, shoulders, legs) are all grouped together, and oft times, you'll find yourself traveling to all areas of the weight area to complete your workout. I'm really not sure exactly why, but TCRC seems to have a high abundance of "gym monkeys" - you know, individuals with Buick size biceps (Today I'm going to go for 300 pounds using only my teeth), who constantly drop weights (one of my pet peeves), and make bizarre exertion grunts (rawgh!). Notice I didn't say jocks - I've yet to encounter any rude or harassing behavior from any of the patrons here, and I'm sure these guys are actually great people. Yet, for the shy and those just beginning their journey to fitness, this machismo may prove quite intimidating. Regardless, if you're in the area, and you have fitness needs, this centre will more than keep you covered. At a price, of course. read more

It's been a year since my first review, and TCRC has gotten busier and busier each month. I have been continually disappointed by the infrastructure and poor organization of the facility since my previous review. Now that even more people are using the facility, finding parking is next to impossible when there is a hockey tournament or some other event occurring. Weight equipment is constantly busy during peak times, and the once-promised sign-up sheets for cardio equipment never materialized, so if you want a treadmill after work you have to hover and wait or go do something else. Running on the track at peak times is often like a video game, dodging people that wander out onto the track without looking and weaving around groups of walkers who take up 2.5 of the 3 lanes. I often am not able to find a place to do abs or stretching when it is busy. In my previous review I mentioned that the change rooms were grossly insufficient for the facility. A few months after writing that I went through eight straight visits of not being able to find a locker and finally snapped and purchased a club membership. The club room is huge and clean, equipped with full lockers, vanities, private showers, toiletries, a TV lounge, a sauna and towel service. Worth the money to save the frustration of the regular rooms, but after seeing the "regular" change rooms at the recently built Commonwealth Rec Centre, I am disappointed that I have to pay $200 extra a year to be able to get a locker and a decent space to change at TCRC. The club rooms come with magnetic access cards and have their own set of problems. Any changes to facility memberships (i.e. extensions due to closures) aren't passed along to the club system and my husband and have had to take our cards to the desk to get our profiles fixed a number of times. This shouldn't be necessary if the computer system was managed efficiently. All this complaining aside, TCRC is still an excellent facility with well-maintained equipment. When visiting at quieter times (early mornings are great), I really enjoy my work outs. I think it is great that more and more people are getting active and getting out to the gym, but unfortunately this facility just wasn't built to support the growing population in the south west. read more

In terms of Rec Centers in Edmonton, I couldn't be happier. Terwillegar has 4 hockey rinks, drop in gyms, scheduled classes, an incredible pool area (large whirlpool, steam room,8 swimming lanes, diving boards and platform, leisure and wave pool, lazy river, waterslide and a tot pool) and a fitness center with well over 100 cutting edge cardio and weight machines. There's something for everyone here. Hell, there's three things for everyone here. Only once have I ever gone to the drop in gyms and not got a court to use and only then because a large group had descended on the gyms at the same time. There is also a kids area that has an indoor playground and a child minding service (which is $5.25/hour). A single adult admission is $10.50 which seems a bit much but if you plan on visiting more than 6 times in a month, a monthly pass is worth it and it also give you access to all other city run facilities. The only gripe I have (and it's minor) is that the parking lots were poorly designed and whenever there is hockey or figure skating going on, it's difficult to find a spot. read more

This is probably one of the biggest recreation centre I have been to in Canada. Very new and very clean on the outside but the change room needs some cleaning. The washroom and shower is designed like a prison camp out of a 1980 movie. Needless to say, I just change into fresh clothing after a workout because there is no way I'm setting foot into the open shower area. I spent most of my time in the weights area. There are mirrors on rollers that lets you adjust to your work bench; I thought that was pretty neat. Lots of squat racks (4) and lots of flat benches (5 or 6). Everyone seem to obey the gym rules so weights are always returned to where they're supposed to be (come to Toronto and you will never see that). There's a track that runs on the outer skirt around the weight area but the way they seperated the two weight lifting section is quite stupid; it means you'd spend a lot of time walking back and forth if the equipments you are looking for is not in the same halves. I only stayed in town for a week so opted for a 5 day pass; came out to a whopping $45!! If you are into swimming, squash, or whatever sports, then I guess this place is really cool. But if you just want to work out like I do, then stick to Good Life or other weight training gyms. Good Luck! read more

I go to Terwillegar Rec Centre a LOT. And I mean a lot. I use the gym, I take registered classes, and I've attended drop-in classes. I love the track that goes all around the gym, and I've never had to wait in line for a cardio or a weight machine. There are many available. The parking situation leaves a lot to be desired, though. I tend to park near the ice arenas, simply because that's usually where I can find parking. But when there are hockey tournaments going on, that side of the parking lot fills up, as does the rest of the parking lot, so it's hard to find a space. read more

Really good place, only gone here for a bit over a month since moving to Edmonton. Fresh facilities, large pools with plenty of swimming lanes that can be set for 25m or 50m though generally set up for 25m, diving area, shallow swimming area and wave pool. Hot tubs and steam room. Sadly no sauna and the steam room is next to the pools instead of next to the showers. Then they have large gym halls for badminton, basketball, etc. and upstairs they have weights and exercise machines. Then they also have 4 ice skating rinks that always seem to be used for ice hockey or figure skating. They also have a baby/kid playground and there's a Second Cup and some other shops. All that and all I've tried is the lap swimming which generally is really good. The place gets quite busy around 5-7pm and on the weekends but I've been there a bit later on weekdays and it wasn't as bad. Quite good price for the membership however the drop in fee is quite steep. Not sure if this is generally the case in Edmonton but the quality of the facility far exceeds the ones I tried in the SF bay area, the swimming is great but I tried a few others in Australia that were better for lap swimming. However the overall package makes it one of the best rec centres I've gone to. read more

Disgusting black ring of slime. I can only base my review on the pool area. I don't think I've been to a pool that is this filthy. I only went in the one section of the pool, the lane swim, and between the bandages and some hair net thing floating at the bottom of the pool and the black ring of slime along the sides, it was more then enough. I should have guessed when I first walked into the pool area by the overpowering smell of chlorine that they were obviously trying to mask the problem. read more

Great potential, but this community centre is a fail. 1. This place is absolutely filthy. The ridiculously undersized locker rooms have gobs of pubic hair in the drains and the showers and pool are perpetually dirty. We reported the problem to staff who told us the cleaners were "on contract" so feedback was "not welcome as they did not have the power to suggest improvements"?!? 2. Parking is a nightmare. You have to navigate 4km of blind curves just to enter the place. Once you get in there is nowhere to park. Some designer must have thought "let's turn an unsightly parking lot into a beautiful, flowing nature feature with positive Feng Shui ". A big fail - you can't find a spot and the closest spot you can find (which is rare) is three blocks away and requires you to cross a busy street. 3. Air temperature in the pool is around 12C so everyone is freezing any time they step out of the water. 4. Lots of open air spaces seems like a good idea, but it makes you listen to dropping weights and juice monkeys grunting while you are trying to enjoy a coffee at the Second Cup. 5. I live here and come every other day to use the gym. It is way too busy, no matter what day of the week. Trying to get parking is a workout in itself. Your best bet is to park across the street and start your "warmup" from there. Machines are always full and the weight area. And sometimes you can get to them without stepping over or into classes that for some reason are in the middle of the weight area and not in classrooms. One time I asked for first aid, because i cut myself and was bleeding. Two young individuals looked really scared and didnt know what to do, i told them i was a nurse and i just need a bandaid. They had to call the LIFEGAURD from the pool, since they were not trained in first aid? Then i had to sign a bunch of forms, all for a small cut on my finger. I had to take them to the stretching area where i was on the matt, they had to inspect the entire area and remove ppl. It was ridiculous. I dont know what would happen if there was someone with chest pain. Hopefully they have resolved this. Swimming the same. I prefer to venture out and go to Meadows, which is a bit away, but the facility is newer and there's less amount of people. Twerwillegar is awesome for family time, very family oriented. Very busy with rinks full of kids -skating or playing hockey. Its nice for them but for people who live close by, and just want to get a work out in....takes more time to even see a machine than it does to walk there from a block or two away. I come to watch my nephews often when they play hockey. They have the Running Room which not only provides workout wear but provides classes and organized events for running. There is a "kids" sort of day care and activity area, as well as private gyms for other sports activity. I would have to say that its interesting keeping a DairyQueen in a place meant for health fitness, however, the place is also great for hosting childrens parties. They have sports events for kids birthdays and that's great. Check out the website for memberships and drop-in cost. There is a difference among the sites. Also check out schedules for classes and events. Wish they had different larger women's locker rooms for both swimming and the gym. It gets crowded and if not going to the pool, you always have to walk around dripping wet individuals and puddle hopping in doors. At Meadows, its kept separate and its awesome. Bring coins if you forget your lock! But if you loose your lock, it may not be beneficial to ask them for their lost in found-- we went through 30 and by some miracle and insane need to complete the task the $2 lock was found. Depending on membership, i believe towels are free. read more

I can only comment about the kids area and the meeting rooms you can rent as I was here for a niece's birthday party. Things I like: We were in room #5 which was fairly sized for about 12 kids and maybe 20 adults? The room included a sink which was nice for cleaning up after. Also included were movable tables and lots of chairs to organize at our own discretion. Also nice is that there is a Second Cup and DQ available to purchase refreshments at. What I didn't like: There are windows on both sides of the rooms so sometimes you would get curious Rec centre goers pushing their face up against the window to see what was happening inside. I guess on the one hand windows are always nice so you can see what's going on outside, but it's also distracting in this instance. Also, the actual aesthetic of the Terwillegar Rec Centre is awful. Reminds of being in a prison (not that i've been in one! Lol) but the walls are white washed and sterile looking, lighting is harsh, and the whole feel of the place just cold and uninviting. I feel bad for all the parents who have to sit idly by while waiting for their kids to finish hockey or any other event happening here. I've been coming here for quite some time. Shortly after it opened, in fact, and I have yet to be genuinely disappointed. I could easily focus my attention to the few minor run ins I have had will surly staff - but that is far and few and I am not one to focus solely on the negative. This Rec Centre has an Aqua Area (diving area, lane pool, depth changing pool, whirlpool/river pull, main pool area with waves, warmed toddler/baby pool, sauna and hot tub), a fitness area (circular running track, weight area, machines up to date, classes, bootcamp, etc), eating area (second cup, dairy queen, seating for those packing a lunch, vending machines with healthy options), Kids area (indoor gym with slide, child minding services, programs, etc). These are a few of the highlights. Don't let the reviews that downplay the Rec centre by how busy it is or the lack of equipment, poor service and infrastructure fool you - those people are not regulars and if they are they obviously have a reason to return despite this. Terwillegar is a great place with something to offer everyone. Is it top of the line? No, but then again we aren't in a seven star hotel in Dubai, now are we folks? We're in a rigging town with some of the highest percentages of high school drop outs and lowest education ratings across the board. The point is, one salty experience or even two or three is not reason enough to dismiss such a great place. Your attitude can make anything horrible and this place is up to date, organized, helpful, fun and family-oriented. read more

Honestly, I held a membership here for one month in 2016, and I moved on. The fitness facility is constantly busy, as is the parking lot. It felt crowded, and with the Dairy Queen on the main floor, all I could smell was fast food. Not what I want during a workout. This facility is very poorly planned and laid out. I don't know what the city was even thinking allowing a DQ in a fitness facility. I don't know what else to say other than overall there isn't really that friendly & welcoming vibe that I get at other facilities. read more

The good: nice fitness facility with modern equipment, new building, running track, plenty of machines. Even when it's busy you can find at least something to hop on. The bad: it doesn't seem to matter what time you go- the parking lot is always jam packed. The change rooms are tiny (unless you pay the premium $90/month membership for the fancy one locked away upstairs) and filthy. They are always dirty and the bathroom is gross. There is one shower that I wouldn't dare step foot in. Most staff are nice, but a couple girls are rude. I went to sign up for a membership and apparently their system was down. The girl said very rudely and matter of factly, "ACTUALLY, our system is down. We've had signs everywhere. On our website (they didn't). At our desk (the sign was tiny). On posters (didn't see any). We've been letting people know for a LONG time." As if I was a total idiot not for noticing. I get she probably had to tell people that a lot, but the insulting tone was unacceptable. To boot, she gave me the wrong type of receipt that they fortunately let me use toward my membership anyway. Zero customer service from that girl. read more

I've only been here twice, it's always been busy. The last time we went here we were taking our baby swimming for the first time which was an exciting & over whelming experience. The family change rooms were extremely busy, trying to move around was a little difficult. The pool area is great though! They had a pool area where infants can go in, its warmer than the rest of the pools. It's a ways for us to travel too, so I don't know when the next time we will go there will be but I would recommend going here to anyone. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with this gym. As other reviewers have pointed out, it is an excellent facility with an amazing pool and great workout equipment, but the building's infrastructure is extremely lacking. The parking lots are a mess. I've often been late for drop-in classes because I spent fifteen minutes circling the building racing other desperate drivers. There are way too many unoccupied handicap stalls, and the parking lots are oddly far from the building's entrances. Not that I don't mind a bit of extra exercise, but it's the longest walk in the world when the temperature hits -30C. I also can't stand the change rooms (a whopping one and a half available to us peons who don't want to pay for a premium membership). There is one large change room that provides pool access and it is always full. The majority of the lockers require fifty cents to be used, with only a handful allowing you to use your own lock. There aren't enough benches or spaces to set down gyms bags, and there is no way you want to set anything on their filthy floor; I quickly learned to carry a pair of flip flops in my gym bag to use in the locker room. There are too few showers, also disgustingly dirty, and unless you're an early bird the water is lukewarm at best. The other change room is extremely tiny and only contains one toilet, one shower, and a handful of lockers. Usually all of the lockers are taken during peak hours, at least the ones that allow you to use your own lock. Even if I have a great workout at this gym, I leave feeling cranky and annoyed from the frustrations of the parking lot and change room. It would be nice to coast into the parking lot, work out, and fix myself up in a clean, uncrowded locker room. This facility is very popular for good reason, but it is already way overcapacity. Unfortunately I'm stuck with a year long membership, but I will definitely be going back to my old gym once the contract expires. read more

Terwillegar Rec Centre is a long trip from the North side for a transit user such as myself but I was so impressed with the facility that I can definitely see myself making a return trip. The pool area was really attractive and bright with huge windows to let in the light and bright colors. There were separate area's for lane swim and general play as well as a giant red waterslide. I noticed there was none of the floating toys or pool noodles that I am used to seeing at other rec centers. I am not sure if this is because they haven't invested in any or if the small crowd of children we saw during the off peak hour we were there just had not dragged them out but it might be a good idea if your a parent to bring a few floaty things from home for your little ones if you have them. The hot tub was a good size and we were able to sit in it with several other patrons without feeling like we were encroaching on other people's personal space but the water was more warm than hot and the pressure of the jets seemed unusually strong and I half expected to be launched across the water to the other side of the tub. I was checking out the fitness area whilst waiting for my friend to meet me for the swim and it looked pretty impressive as well. There were lots of new machines up there and the crowd wasn't too bad but from reading other peoples reviews I gather it gets pretty busy up there and I was checking it out during an off peak time. I also noticed people from all age ranges and fitness levels using the facility which I think it's a great thing for people like me who are admittedly out of shape and would be self conscious working out in a facility full of hard bodied twenty year olds. If your hungry or need a caffeine fix post workout they have a DQ as well as a Second Cup in the building. While I get the appeal and applaud those businesses for choosing such a prime location I would think in a place that encourages physical fitness you would try and bring in some food options with healthier choices. The staff were very nice and we loved the pool. I don't do well with big crowds so I don't know how likely I would be to use the fitness area but I will definitely be returning for a swim. read more

I would like to complain about parking lots near Terwillegar Community Rec Centre. On November 2014 my car was stolen from the Terwillegar Community Rec Centre parking lot. After I found out about that I went to administration desk and asked if they have video surveillance to check parking lot and ask for security to help me out. The administrative staff said that they don't have video surveillance and security staff. They suggested to me go and check one more time all parking lot and I did. Actually I checked even twice, but I mentioned that parking area was so dark and doesn't not have enough lights and it was not safe walking around. I still remember filling and frustration. I paid for my membership, but I went in recreation center only twice, because I still have barrier and filling that it is not safe place to go and something can happen while I am swimming. And it is not about money but about lost the time I enjoy, the health I can improve. I 've also been at Commonwealth, Kinsmen Sports Centre and Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre problem and there is the same "dark"parking lots problem. I also would like to mention that at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre in aquatic area there is very strong chlorine scent! And there is a lot of kids around. this is so dangerous for the healht too. My family sometimes go here for swimming and skating. Swimming"s a little expensive but the indoor skating is fun and free, the ice is smooth and it's a great place to practice skating. But your not allowed to play hockey during public skating and I understand why but maybe if you could put that on a different rink during the same time. I'm sure my brother would appreciate it. I often use this rec centre as it's close to where I live. It is usually pretty busy, but I have never had any experiences with not getting the equipment that I need for my work outs. I usually attend the drop-in spin classes and really enjoy them. The swimming pool here is pretty cool, but again quite busy and always being used. The only thing I dislike about this rec centre is parking is pretty atrocious. Usually during peak hours, expect to park far away and walk. read more

Once we got used to small change rooms and no space for shoes, we started enjoying the Rec Centre.

The pool is the dirtiest I have ever been in in my entire life. There's a thick brown line of dirt all around the water line of the main pool. I couldn't believe it, it has to be some sort of health hazard. read more

I really enjoy coming here. I have been to Zumba, the swimming pool and the play area for kids. There is always so much to do here. They have food choices if you make a day of it (incl Dairy Queen and second cup). The play area has a small area for smaller babies up until about 2, and then a large climbing area for the bigger kids. Because this is for smaller kids up to age 7/8, the cost is minimal and parents get in free with their child. The gym area and Zumba areas are awesome. Very spacious for large groups and the classes are tons of fun. The pool is where I recently went. They have 3 pools and a hot tub. The small pool for younger kids (anyone can go in but it's not too deep) is heated to a very warm temp which is perfect when you go with your little ones. There is a lap pool with diving boards and then another pool that is a wave pool and has some splash park type sprayers. Lots of fun for the whole family! read more
