I grew up living across the street from this Brick and Mortar Book Store, Watching the stores it was next to change from a circle k to a video store to a pennysmiths to a flying star.. This place is small but so good. If they don't have it, they'll get it and fast. If you want it as a special gift in a hard back edition they will find it. They are friendly, they have hilarious do dads and this store is one of the things that I miss the most although randomly spending gross amounts of money is a thing i do not miss. This is always a best of burque pick .. and it always has great books signing and readings. read more

I love having a bookstore in my neighborhood. I give it 3 stars mostly for the location and the author/booksigning events they have. I have two complaints. 1. Especially if a bookstore is small, I would rather the space be used for books, rather than stacking them on the floor to make room for toys and knick knacks. There is no counter space and one has to hand purchases over big stacks of "impulse item" cute stuff to the staff to ring up. It's inconvenient and ridiculous. 2. In most bookstores, people talk quietly, kind of like they do in a library. But at Bookworks, the staff always seems to be shouting across the store to each other or talking really loudly right next to each other. It feels inconsiderate to me, as a browsing customer. I hope that they will listen to this feedback, if they see it. I still shop there because I want to support my neighborhood independent bookstore. But it is still a commercial enterprise, not a charity. Small independent businesses can't offer the variety, depth, convenience or pricepoint that the big chain stores do. No matter what they say, they don't offer employment that pays better with chances for advancement that big stores do. So it's important that they listen to customers to improve service in their local community. I've mentioned the counterspace issue, and they just laugh. I hope others will mention this to the manager if it bothers them, too. read more

This bookstore has always been one of my favorites. Sure it needs work and is cluttered but there are some fun things to get lost in while browsing and I've always liked how comfortable it is. I like browsing and being left alone to look for myself. When I need help I ask for help and the staff has always been friendly. I think they have improved their service and added some things to make it look better. Because of the Internet it's bookstores like these that have trouble staying alive I hope Albuquerque doesn't let that happen with this one. This is a local charm and hopefully they will fight to keep it open. Come on Albuquerque give them your local business and help keep them alive! Some of these reviews are pretty mean and they're probably not from around here, because we are not mean here! People that tell me in their reviews that staff is mean make me wonder what they were like to the staff...? I found that the employees in that bookstore went out of their way to be nice to me. This will be my first and last time visiting this bookstore. What I noticed wasn't so much that the books were haphazardly stacked and flung everywhere(which they were), but the owner's tyrannical presence in the store. No wonder the employees were either hiding from her, or distancing themselves, pretending to be shelving. The owner was, by far, the rudest person I have ever encountered. She seemed drunk and belligerent, when I asked her some questions in regards to a few books I was looking for, since I couldn't find them. She actually scoffed at a few titles, which they didn't have. I had absolutely no interest in having her order me them, so I promptly walked out of there, laughing to myself, and pitying the employees that worked in such a place. They give independently owned 'mom-and-pop' stores a REAL bad name. If you ever want to know what NOT to do when you run a business, you should visit this place sometime. Having written a few books and given readings/signings over more than 15 years around USA, London & Paris, my experience at Bookworks in Albuquerque was very unfavorable. I am glad I invited someone from PBS-TV and a book collector to join me, otherwise it would have been a complete no-show! Never could I imagine that happening. Despite my creating and sending attractive posters in advance, drab black and white notices were the only indication that I was to appear there. My photo never appeared on the side board of website, etc. I was ignored in any advance planning. The events manager is obviously greatly over-worked and surly as a result. The owner never bothered to greet me. Writers beware and put your energies elsewhere! We deserve better! read more

This is my favorite bookstore in ABQ, and we do have a few other independents. I no longer live close by but I make the effort to get over to Bookworks because they carry many current in-demand titles but many older and off-the-beaten-path books as well. Their staff has been there a good while and is extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Yes, it's a small space, and yes, it's packed full of books, but it's also one-of-a-kind. You get more customer service than I have ever received at Borders or Barnes and Noble, and the people working there seem to really enjoy books, selling books, and letting the world at large know about the next great thing they need to read. Their email newsletter is also great. I hope that the bankruptcy of one of the big-box bookseller chains leads back to more of this kind of bookstore. We need community more than just commerce. read more

A frequent haunt of a bookworm such as myself, Bookworks is my favorite book store in all of Albuquerque. Even if they don't have the book in stock, the staff will gladly take down your information and order it right away. I stumbled on Bookworks while visiting in Albuquequere. I loved it - just the kind of independent bookstore we don't have enough of anymore. There are books all over the place and if you don't find something to tempt you, you're not really a reader. It was charming, if small and crowded. I was determined not to buy anything and ended up with several new books. Had a nice conversation with the sales person. Not like the big box stores at all. I signed up for the newsletter even though I'm thousands of miles away and always read it and wish I were able to attend their events. I do go back when I get to Albuquequere. read more

I stopped in for a Christmas present for my mother-in-law but, unfortunately, they didn't have the book I wanted in stock. No problem, though, because the owner of the bookstore ordered the book for me, gift-wrapped it, and dropped it off at my mother-in-law's house.
