You think you're in a high class, unique stationary shop and then you get to the birthday card section and suddenly you're in Spencer Gifts. The most disgusting and crude selection of birthday cards i have ever seen. I personally have no problem with nasty/crude cards but in a place like this? And that's the majority of your selection? I think they are struggling with identifying their customer base. Hint: We are well off traditionalists who like boutiques and beautiful things not found at department stores. We still like to send cards, hand write notes and buy beautiful, classy gifts for our friends. We are not "emo chic." read more

Paper stores. These have to be some of the most difficult retail spots, in modern times, to turn a decent profit. Somehow, for the better part of my life in this city, Pennysmith's has survived, and I'm really glad it's still around. And that probably has everything to do with the fact that Pennysmith's doesn't focus much on paper. I mean, they have everything I need for that special occasion or kewl framed image for the abode, but the reason I'm usually peeping this place is for the quirky gift-y goodies, you'll find 'em tucked in corners, generally around the perimeter. I bought a Lamy Safari pen (best foundation pen ever) and the staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, I dropped that same pen at work, without a cap resulting in the nib bending, I returned to this place and they switched the nib out for me. They also have workshops and events (upcoming pen event, for pen fans out there). Unique place and local experts, no other place in town comes even close. read more

I'm not sure what I expect when I went to Pennysmith's Paper but it didn't really end up being whatever that was. I suppose I went there wanting to browse for high quality papers suitable for fountain pens and possibly scope out some pens as well. They have some of that stuff but there wasn't enough to quite tickle my fancy. That doesn't mean this place doesn't fit well in it's actual niche - which I would say is probably more aimed at the wedding crowd or people who are decorating for parties, etc. The store has a very feminine air and I suppose I felt somewhat uncomfortable looking around. They did carry some Clairefontaine and Rhodia notepads and a few fountain pens but not really enough variety to keep me interested. The staff attempted to be friendly and kindly tried to search out things I might be interested in but there really just wasn't much in store that I would have purchased and if I did, it would have been cheaper online or at another store. I don't want to portray this place negatively because I think there is definitely a different crowd that would love it but it simply wasn't my kind of store. read more

Pennysmith's is one of my mainstays in Albuquerque. (Fortunately I live in the NV and not 4H, but even if I lived in Four Hills, I'd be happy to make the trip.) Most important to me: consistently good taste and quality merchandise. So, I take issue with your review, Marisa J. - there are NOT plenty of other local businesses from which to choose if those are among your priorities. I always find new things to delight me - new tricks for an old dog who is regularly fed at the Crane's section. Kate Spade, Visconti fountain pens, Filofax, great ideas for invitations, and a carefully chosen, well-informed staff that know when to advance and retreat - these are a few of my favorite things.... The place is amazing (merchandise wise). Cute and full of amazing items. I came here to get some ideas for my wedding stationary, but I was immediately turned off by the OWNER (who's name is Emily I believe) talking about her black employees (to other employees) and how she thought they were stealing from her. I felt uncomfortable the rest of the time I was there. If you can get over racism this place is for you. I hope the employees she was talking about are in a better place. Unfortunately I do not know any other stationary places in New Mexico, if you could let me know that would be stellar. read more

Based on yelp reviews, I checked out Pennysmiths for my wedding invitations and was not disappointed. The super friendly staff pulled out several sample books while listening to my jokes, which I love, thank you. Anyhoo, they helped me find invitations and accoutrement within my budgetary constraints, explained the approval processes and when it looked like the last snow storm might delay my order by one or two days, James called me to let me know of the possibility. Platinum Perfection at Pennysmith's! I could not be more pleased with the attention, quality and response I experienced working with Pennysmith's. They are absolutely phenomenal. I received the best attention, service and understanding working with them. Indeed, while I was late getting information to them, they never faltered in responding timely with perfect stationary and all the accessories for the save-the-dates, invitations, etc. for the wedding. It is nearly 2 weeks since the wedding and over 3 months since the invitations went out and I am still receiving compliments. Went in today prepared to spend well over $30 on cards alone and to buy a nice letter opener, as well as check out wedding invitations. Walked into an empty store with two employees who both looked right at me and said absolutely nothing. I was willing to write it off, but after a third employee came in and made direct eye contact with me and didn't say anything, I started to feel decidedly uncomfortable alone in a small store with three employees, chit chatting with one another but acting as if I were a stinky fart they were trying their best to avoid acknowledging. They have an amazing selection of cards and fun gifts, and I prefer to shop locally, but it's not cheap and at least I expect to feel somewhat anonymous at a big box store. This was worse than feeling anonymous- I felt straight up unwelcome. Not sure if there was something on my face or in my teeth but... jeez. Put my cards back and walked over to Bookworks instead. Creative Culture and Duran's Pharmacy also have amazing card and gift selections, and they're much more centrally located and have so far been exceedingly friendly and helpful. read more
