This is such a cute little store! The layout has a nice flow and everything is well organized making it easy to find 'your book'. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety this tiny treasure has to offer. There's books, cards, decks, bookmarks, calendars, pins, stickers, coloring books, sticker books and all of the literature varieties. I'll have admit the children reading nook was probably my favorite area. I provided a space for my daughter to explore reading while my husband and I hunted for the perfect books. In the end we each picked out our next reads and a couple of wooden bookmarks. We were even given a bookmark with each book as a gift from the store. My only vice is the staff. The girls were dismissive of people coming in an out of the building and we're having a hangout as opposed to running a business. It made the desk area feel odd. I have made it a big point to support this local bookstore over the last couple of years in spite of poor customer service. First couple of times, thought it might be an isolated staff member, but today as well as a couple of weeks ago, it felt like I was interrupted the staff "clique". This is a cute little bookstore. It's a local favorite for sure! The customer service, however, is a little lacking and they definitely are not very knowledgeable about current authors and books. Their prices are much higher than comparable stores (almost every paperback is $16.00 no matter the size nor suggested retail price). However, some of their books are signed. Their fiction section is sorely lacking but they do have events featuring local authors, which is nice. It seems like they have become more of a gift shop than a bookstore lately. They have quite a large selection of book related gift items like socks and mugs, which are pretty cool! I will definitely be back around Christmas to purchase some of those! Next time I come in hopefully there will be a better selection of fiction novels for the typical retail prices. read more

All three actors we're reading things that they liked from their favorite books. After the book signing they were signing photos for a donation for a charity. I love Bookworks! I have been coming here off and on for years, but especially with the pandemic my aim is to support local. If they don't have the book you want in stock, you can ask for them to order it or order it through the website. It is easy to do. I miss browsing the store looking for hidden gems. They have also always supported charities or local places, like Environmental Education New Mexico, donating advanced copies of books or signed books for our fundraisers. Their prices are a little bit higher, but it is an independent bookstore. read more

A small independent book store next to the flying star. So right after breakfast why not walk around the store. They're remodeling so navigating was a little difficult - but is understandable. IThe book selection well that's another story. They had a good selection of novels, self help, kids books and local, city, state and flora & fauna guides. Political bent aside the selection was decidedly left. There was no middle of the road selection let alone more right leaning reads. The owners have their opinions and I have this review. Had there been a more balanced selection to choose from they probably would have received a better rating. read more

The staff is very helpful, the store is comfortable. BUT I ordered a book online that was "in stock" and I chose BW over Amazon so that I could support my local independent bookstore....however their distributor was out of stock and never informed BW and the gift book was never sent...and I was NEVER notified. really frustrating. I strolled into Bookworks. I want to replace On The Road, which is dilapidated by now. I want to replace it from a local bookstore, if possible. I guess to say it must be cermonially replaced, even though I'm not actually throwing it away by any means. I have an odd thing I do. I like to take it with me everywhere, and I can't stand it in my Nook Color. Jack is special, and therefore, must be treated that way. Often Kerouac novels can be found in local bookstores. Bookworks has it on the website, but I didn't see it in the store, not at all. The store is kind of sparse, but has charm. So I glanced at the other selections. It has both regional, and popular selections. I could've spent a long time in there. I was tired, and figured I'd be back before this month is over, since bookstores, specially local bookstores, are where I thrive. I didn't ask about the book, but I might call them. I'm so glad to see a local bookstore with great staff. I really liked the staff. I did glance at the travel journals. (something must be better than my trusty Meade Lil Fat Book). I saw the journals, and might get one before I leave. I just fell in love with this little stores, and the stores around it. I liked it's clutter, it's color and it's charm. Bookworks is doing an incredible job of keeping their community safe, entertained, and well-read during the pandemic! I just went to grab a book order from their curbside pickup. I explained to them that we have a recent outbreak of COVID-19 at the hospital where I work- and that I would prefer for them to leave the order on the ground/concrete wall (rather than placed in my car), just to be overly cautious. The staff came to my vehicle (appropriately protected) and not only delivered my order, but gave me books to bring to the hospital. I choked up when I saw the full bag. If you like books and you do not mind clutter you will be at home here. This is one of the last remaining independent bookshops left in Albuquerque. They sell new books for adults and children along with other odds and ends such as calendars, toys, cards, music CD's. The variety of books covers a bit of everything, but there is not enough depth to be very helpful. They charge full price for the books, rarely a discount here. While other places put there calendars on sale right after New Year's day, not here, not until February. You are far better off to shop someplace else with greater selection and greater discounts. The store is pretty small and there are way too many books. There are piles of books everywhere. This place defines the word clutter. This place is a fire trap and a lawyers dream with potential accidents lurking around every corner. They have so many books that they drag them out every morning and take them in every night from the front porch. I feel sorry for the poor minimum wage staff that have to do this insane task. They really need to have a deep discount sale and just get rid of the old stock cluttering up everything. Maybe donate what they can't peddle to the Friends of the Library Charity. That would be nice. The staff experience varies from kinda friendly and helpful to rude and snooty. Most of the staff are not helpful and generally just ignore you. If you ask them a question they are very vague and the majority of the time the book you want is not in stock and they have to order it. Sometimes there is hardly any staff around, while at other times they are on top of you like a cat on a rat. They often have visiting authors do book signings which can be fun, but the place is just way too small for it to be enjoyable. People get packed in like sardines and you cannot even see the author. Refreshments are sometimes served and consist of whatever is cheap like cookies in a tin and a beverage of water. This place either needs to close up shop or move to a larger space where things can spread out and patrons can free themselves from bumping into shelves and having piles of books fall on them. Ok, but I have seen far better book shops. Do yourself a big favor and skip it. read more

I was only in town for a couple days wanted to come check it out, glad I did. Saw plenty of recent releases too, so don't be worried you won't find what you want! read more

I visited Bookworks in August while on vacation to NM. My goal visiting the store was to find some reading material to enjoy on my trip. I also like visiting independently owned bookstores. First, the good: the store has a decent selection of local authors, reasonably priced used books (inter-shelved with new books from what I observed), nice facility (lots of space to wander around), and friendly staff. Where improvements could be made, at least from my observation that day, include: store upkeep (I noticed torn carpet, trash pile visible in the back, and litter on the staff rec shelf), and carrying more fiction classics. I didn't buy anything this go-around, but I hope to visit again when in Albuquerque. read more

All it took was one visit to this store to realize I'm white. Spotted "Stuff White People Like: A Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions" on the non-fiction shelf. The title piqued my interest, so I started reading it. Boy was that cool move. Three pages in and I wanted to read more. Ten pages in and I was genuinely amused. Fifty pages in and I finally knew what others had known about me all along (because I like the Red Sox, indie rock music, microbreweries, Mos Def, Noam Chomsky, being in complicated relationships, own a pair of New Balance running shoes, etc.). Anyway, to confirm my whiteness, I was never asked by sales staff to please purchase something or leave, nor given any odd looks as if I were going to steal a memoir or whatever. In fact they smiled and shot me nods of approval. High five. read more

Five stars for fighting the good fight and surving the box store onslaught and Amazon Kindle. I'm a Kindle owner, so I should really go shoot myself, but I still enjoy holding books in my hands, so maybe just a stab in the knee or something. Anyways, I liked this place despite feeling that it was a bit pricey. Here's why: -the children's book in Spanish -the wealth of events, talks, and meetings for children -the classic book t-shirts they sell -the customer service and effort to help you get the book you're after This place is truly a gem. I look forward to returning in the future. Notice that I didn't talk much about the books, only because I do feel the selection isn't the best, but this is tempered by knowing that I can still come in here, find some unexpected gems and sit down and give it a read in the pleasant ambiance. This is a bookstore that is just stuffed to the gills with good books. I visited on a Friday night in November, and ended up spending close to two hours in the store, reading all of the staff reviews, browsing through different books, and trying to decide which ones to purchase. While the layout of the store is a bit awkward and cramped, the reason is because they have so many great books *everywhere*-- and I'm certainly not going to quibble with that. Check out the kids section-- there's even a separate category for kids books that fit into a "southwest" theme. This is a great, great bookstore to spend a few minutes or several hours. The staff was friendly and Nancy helped me to find a book that I had been seeking for awhile. Go, enjoy, and buy something to support this amazing local bookstore. Every town needs a good independent book store. This is best new, not used goods-bookstore. It screams counter culture. They also have book signings/readings regularly. They have one coming up that will be fairly epic. You will have to find what I am speaking of- on your own. I was staying at an inn down the road so I stopped in for some reading material. Yes, as others have said, it is cluttered, but I didn't mind it. I found it to be a quaint indie bookstore with a certain charm. There was an author session going on while I was there that was well attended and seemed to be interesting (I overheard a few minutes). I found some interesting books on the subject I was looking for and the prices were pretty standard. If I lived there, I could totally see frequenting the place more often. Been meaning to visit ever since we moved here 3 years ago and we finally did. My 3 year old won a contest and got a gift card to this shop and now I am totally a loyal customer. I love the location and to me the prices were comparable to barnes and noble. The workers encouraged my kiddo to sit on the bean bag chair (which she happily did) and when I told them I was looking for children's books with flaps inside for her to open and they knew exactly where all sorts of books were even though they were scattered throughout the kids' section. I never get that kind of service at the big book stores. Can't wait to come here to buy our books from now on :) Also, there's a flying star next door....it's a win-win combination! read more

I was ignored when I walked in. Reminded me SO much of the Portlandia skits with Toni and Candice. (They are now out of business in Portland) The women in there are rude and aloof and could seriously use a makeover or do over, or at least have a personality. Not helpful. Had to seek them out for help. Sometimes out of the required reading for our school. Long overdue review! I came here during the summer of 2011. I saw on a website that it was dog friendly, next to a dog friendly restaurant. Win-win, right? Well, for a human solo traveller with dog, the restaurant was a no go, but the book store was. (It was dog friendly, but you had to go inside to get food. I didn't want to leave my dog outside by herself.) Cozy, friendly and full of neat books and nicknacks, my pup and I loved our visit. She got lots of attention and I got to look at some really neat stuff. Occasionally they have readings and music. This place is really a delight. I wish they was one near me in Los Angeles. read more

Bookworks is cluttered and disorganized, and not in a quirky, small, business sort of way. In a "oh my god, what is wrong with this place, nothing is where it's supposed to be, why are there piles all over the floor" sort of way. A very claustrophobic environment, made tacky by a fake fireplace. Somehow they manage to get good authors to visit for signings, but it's extremely unpleasant to be in that store with a large crowd. You can barely move, let alone actually see the author. I'm giving it two stars, only because it's the only place in the North Valley to get new books (though I still make the extra trip to go somewhere else). read more

Bookworks in the kind of small modern bookstore that I really enjoy. It is comfy and nicely laid out and feels very homey when you walk in. I'll admit that some of the organization of genres and titles seems chaotic and different but it's done in a way that makes you explore a bit. There are several sections in the store with 'Indie's picks' of this and that. They are a nice introduction to interesting books but I have to admit that I was a bit confused at first, not realizing that Indie was probably someone's name, and assumed it was referring to independently published books. Before I figured this out I thought it was really odd to be seeing mostly best-sellers in 'Indie's picks'. Kind of confusing... but I suppose it isn't Indie's fault that she was named thus. Another nice thing about Bookworks is some of the most artsy-fartsy stuff they carry. Cool postcards and greeting cards, pins, etc. They also have a really nice section of signed books. My one real complaint is that none of the staff really made any effort to welcome me. It is a pretty small store and it wasn't busy yet the staff didn't even acknowledge me during the many times I walked by them. Shops like this can live or die by whether people feel like they belong there. I was willing to overlook it because otherwise it is a really cool store but I wish they'd have at least made an effort. Still, I recommend Bookworks for those who still like to hold the written word in their hands. read more

Cute store with a great location next to Flying Star Cafe, among shops of the boutique-y variety. From just a quick walk through, the place appears to cover a very wide swath of reading interests. I spied some great stationery and cards here. I don't think the place was intended to be like ye old corporate bookstore arranged in a very specific marketing manner, but rather, a place where broad categories are defined and treasures are to be found rather serendipitously. I support the local bookstore movement and Bookworks receive no less than my vote of confidence. read more

This place is a highlight of the neighborhood. They have a great selection of books by New Mexico authors, and the staff will help you find or order anything your heart desires. Definitely the bookstore for book lovers. I can see what others mean by it being cluttered but I think it's part of the charm. I loved the atmosphere, the creativity just screaming from the walls of this store, and the obvious passion for books the staff has. This is the ultimate of bookstores- it's almost as cool as Powell's. Almost... When I own a bookstore in my next life I'm going to have one just like Bookworks complete with coffee shop next door and art supplies a couple doors down. Wish I lived in Albuquerque! read more

This place has been here for a long long time. It used to be the size of a closet and has grown. They have lots of cool author events, readings, poetry readings, book club stuff, etc. They offer free gift wrapping for any purchase. If they don't have what you want they'll order it. The area of town where the store is located is really nice - down in the North Valley full of Cottonwood trees and adjacent farms and estates. Flying Star is next door and the shopping center has lots of cool eclectic shops as well. It's a nice place to chill. The have a nice little area for kids to sit down and read and look at books and they also carry some artsy craft type books for kids. The bookstore is locally owned and operated. The owners are great and the staff are great. Periodically I've seen famous people hanging out in the store. At least 2 of the Breaking Bad stars for sure. Some others from the local film industry as well. You never know who you might see... read more
