I've never had a time that they didn't have the book I wanted or didn't have the ability to get it. I love going in and getting a tea or coffee. The warm drink in my hand as I browse the collections of books. They have a great selection of humor, travel, true crime, romance, cool books, etc. In addition to books, they have an awesome collection of toys and records. Shopping in the toy section is a lot of fun. They have a great kids/young readers section in addition to a teen section. They have kits to learn how to crochet, tie knots, make sushi. There were enough employees around that I had no problem finding one when I had a question, and when I didn't need them, they left me alone to browse at my leisure. They had about every type of book I could think of, and used and new met side by side in an easy to follow flow. It was light and friendly and smelled of books. "House with a Clock in its Walls" was inspired by a home in this little town of Marshall. And fittingly, there were copies of the book by the cash register. The owner/employee(?) was able to share some knowledge about the author and the book and even gave us directions to drive past the inspiration house. We will be back. My heros of a bygone era, local and mega chain bookstores used to be where you'd go to find the…read morelatest and greatest print media. Used bookstores on the other hand, were where you'd go digging for treasure among aged tomes and other peoples' cast offs. Perhaps that's what's keeping West Side Book Shop around. When the instant gratification of new novelty is clicks away at your fingertips, the promise of unpredictability, mystique and snippets of nostalgia draws customers to enter its doors. The space isn't large, really more of a living room transformed by wall to wall shelves and mini mountains on the central surfaces and displays. Here you too can own a piece of history or simply extend the life of a book or periodical. Sometimes you can find a rare edition or obscure title. Past times I've been there I haven't had much interaction with the staff though they were pleasant when checking out. The shop is located in downtown Ann Arbor so parking can be a pain, though if you're not too picky and prefer not to pay, you can always park a little further in the more residential areas and walk over. There are plenty of structures and lots too. They'll be celebrating 50 years in 2025. Hope they continue to be celebrated in Ann Arbor for years to come!

In a day and age when bookstores are being run out of business by Amazon and other online…read moremarketers, it is good to see an old-fashioned bookstore stocked to the ceiling with titles ... all new books in a wide range of genres ... leaning academic or at least intelligent nonfiction with only a bit of popular fiction. We were not surprised to run across this kind of bookstore in a major college town like the University of Michigan. The store is located on a corner in a busy area of Ann Arbor, and covers two stories ... a first floor and a basement ... both well stocked. The staff was very helpful, especially with their "staff picks." We'll visit again ...

The little tags that talk about unique aspects of the book are a really nice touch. I did find it to be slightly biased politically, but I'm not sure what you can expect in downtown Ann Arbor. They did have a beautiful special version of a book that my best friend from Australia loves, so I was able to pick up that copy. I can't wait to send it to her. When I told her about it, she cried. The book is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much Literati for stocking such lovely products! Sidenote - this bookstore used to have delicious oat milk, lattes and unfortunately, they do not the café upstairs anymore. I do like that they got rid of all the tables where people would sit for hours on their computer computers. Now there is more room for books and I enjoy their selection of YA, cookbooks, and other genres. This is the same bookstore. We brought our Canadian friends too to browse, and it was very fun also. GW and ER are such important, 'kindred souls' that supporters put up the $$$$ to cut a door connecting the shops so you can wander back & forth. ER is strongly focused on serving neglected social communities ~ afflicted children and the bereaved as well as the neighborhood's substantial gay/lesbian and 'minority' populations. Doesn't have great breadth of stock but will order any book they can find for you, call when it comes in [and save you shipping]. They routinely discount bestsellers and have a 'freebie' section where lots of really good books get recycled for nominal contribution. Staff is sharp, personable, worth talking to. There's a fairly eclectic magazine rack, greeting cards, some world craft items, works by local artists, and specialized racks related to Michigan and to medical cannabis. Scott also makes a small community room available, hosts readings and guest authors; there's no telling who you'll run into at the ER / GW ... ' Also on 2000 block are Italian, Somali and Thai eateries and the Green Door blues bar = well worth getting off the bus.. ER no longer operates Postal substation ~ was huge money loser.
