Had this place for the first time tonight. Called for takeout at 735pm and the woman who answered had a total attitude -- no pleasure in her voice -- sounded like she was being severely being disserviced by my call. I ordered a Sashimi dinner with tuna, salmon, and California roll. had to repeat myself a few times because she wasn't listening, and she said to be sure I'm there by 8. Cool so my food is going to take 25 mins? Seems long for raw fish but OK. I pull in to the parking lot at 8:01 and I get a call asking if I was coming by because they were closing. That would've been useful to know when I called. Now I know why there was attitude -- I was cutting in to them going home. The person who took my payment did not sound like the same one who picked up the phone - she seemed nicer and was thorough. I pay and head back home to chow down. Presentation was nice (for it being in a to go container) and food looked fresh. There were 16 pieces of sashimi like the menu said, but they were tiny slices. I weighed the fish and it came out to 4.9 oz. For $20 I was expecting regular sized pieces of sashimi (1 oz - 2 oz each). C'est le vie. It tasted fine enough (for Chalmette standards). The California roll was also decent. The miso soup on the other hand was pretty bad -- it tasted like someone put cooking oil in i. Ultimately food was above average but did not have a lot of value. This place is a serious bang for your buck! I ordered take out and was given my food in what felt like less than 5 minutes. I ordered the bento #3 (bbq eel roll, 3 sushi pieces, noodle salad, and miso soup), and everything was very fresh and flavorful. Not to mention I got a gorgeous pile of pickled ginger and wasabi. Not many sushi options in Chalmette and in the Yelp review of the other one, someone wrote that they found a hair in their edamame so that made narrowing the choice down pretty easy. Nice place. The girl behind the counter was friendly and helpful. I noticed that they had two interesting choices on the menu - a PoBoy Roll and Sushi Nachos (WHAT?!). She said the PoBoy Roll is fried and tastes just like a PoBoy and the Sushi Nacho an appetizer with dipping sauces and such. It was a really long day and I wasn't feeling adventurous so I went with a tried and true. I ordered a Philadelphia Roll. It was delish. Hit the spot. Very fresh. Should be noted that no alcohol is served here and it's a Pepsi place. I could have used that drink but Bonzai Sushi Express is well above average, especially for an express sushi place. Bonzai Sushi is so amazingly affordable and delicious. Their bento boxes are such a steal. I love their eel (unagi) nigiri sushi and their noodle salad! Their ordering system is pretty unique for a sushi restaurant where you order at the register and they bring the food to you after. read more

Stopped here after work for some sushi and I always go overboard with a new sushi place. I got the baked salmon, gyoza, egg rolls, tempura shrimp, Doritos roll, bayou roll, heavenly eel roll, special crunchy roll, and rock and roll roll. All the rolls came out looking so delicious! The only thing was that all the rolls that had avocado, I special ordered them without. Just cause I think avocados are gross and I don't want to spend half my dinner dissecting a sushi roll to get them out. Well...that's exactly what happened. They forgot to nix the avocado and I spent half my dinner dissecting rolls to get them out. Other than that, the rolls were awesome. My favorite has to be uhmmmmm all of them! The bayou roll was pretty damn awesome. The roll with eel and a mini scoop of crab salad on top omg that was like the best freaking thing ever! I will dream about that roll which I can't remember the name of right now. I didn't like the eel sauce much but I loved the other two sauces. One was a wasabi mayo and the other was something else I can't remember. Loved all the apps except the egg rolls...they were kinda blandish. But I will come back. Try more rolls. And sauces. I'm terrible at short order spots, especially if it's my first time at a restaurant. But, the girl at the counter was super helpful and even helped me change my order up alittle to save me some money. How great is that?? They have a great menu with house rolls and special rolls,and great combos that include rolls, salad, soup and drink. You also have an option to upgrade your salad for only $2. I have heard that most of the staff is from Stixx, which was a more upscale sushi spot in the area, pre-Katrina. The food is great, staff is friendly, great for fast casual lunch!! read more

Whenever I'm in Chalmette and it's around noon, Bonzai is where I think about going. This place has always been consistent, quick, and friendly. When I visit Chalmette, I always try to stop at Bonzai. Bonzai Sushi is probably the best you can get for the price in the New Orleans area. The sushi quality is comparable to high end restaurant in the metro area and the price is hard to beat. On top of quality, they understand taste. Ingredients in each roll just work together. Spicy tuna is actually spicy, unlike other sushi restaurants. Tempura grease doesn't taste like old grease, etc. The restaurant is super casual. Costumer orders at the counter and the waitress/ waiter brings you the food. Although there is only two sushi chefs, food comes out very fast. I give them a five star simply because they are in the business to make costumers happy, not just to make money, and that makes a huge difference. read more

From Bonzai Sushi Express I've had their Sumo Roll, Alaskan Roll, Spider Roll, and two other rolls that slipped my mind. I say their sushi is good for pricing and location. It's decent ! I love sushi so I've eaten at a lot of places but when I'm in the parish and don't feel up to a 35+ minute drive, Bonzai does 'scratch the itch.' I wish they had better sauces though! Okkkkkkk So I was in Chalmette, and remembered hearing about a sushi joint on in da Parish. Here was my chance to see how Chalmations eat sushi. First off do not expect this to be some uptight joint. Basically you place your order at the counter, you pay for your food, fill your own drink, and you wait for the counter person to call out your number---to which you will go and pick up your own food. Im down with that and have no problems with this. My favorite about this place is their combo meals. I placed an order for one that consisted of a sashimi app size, a choice of a house roll, came with huge side of salad(which is sliced cucumber, chopped snowcrab, clear noodles, and a blob of their special sauce on it. Also, it came with a drink(free refills) and miso soup -- all for 10.95 not to include tax. Not bad. My only complaint is that they need to add add more fish in the actual roll instead of filling it up with cruncy and snowcrab. Really, Ive been there twice and if it wasnt for that part, everything else wouldve been great. Great family setting, they have beer also I think. Big parking lot, accepts cash and credit cards. I am a big sushi fan and have eaten sushi in many places so I figure it's safe to say that Bonzai's sushi is the best I have had! I have eaten here since they first opened and have tried many other places before and after they opened and I can not find anywhere better! The prices are very decent and some of their rolls (Sumo, Bonzai, King, Rainbow, and more) are well worth the price and they are so large, they're all you need! At least one of my personal favorites (Philly and Heavenly Eel) usually make their way into my order, though. The Bonzai salad and snow crab salad are wonderful and I absolutely LOVE avocado, which they use on most rolls and put a few slices atop the snow crab salad. YUMM! Restaurant is very clean so are the bathrooms. Free refills on drinks, and your food can be delivered through Road Runner Delivery Service. Open Mon- Sat, closed Sundays. I definitely recommend Bonzai to everyone! I actually recommended my grand maw to eat there but she doesn't like sushi so I told her about the chicken teriyaki and she LOVED it! Being from Metairie, I'm spoiled by Sushi Express (of Metairie). They offer free delivery, use LARGE rolls, and deliver during their happy hour. Regarding Value. Bonzai Sushi Express in Chalmette pales in comparison. They don't deliver during happy hour, charge $5.00 for delivery and they make small rolls. I guess you can get away with that when there's no, local, competition. On the plus side, delivery is prompt and the food is tasty. It's just hard for me to pay so much for so little, especially when I'm spoiled when I'm at home. read more

Great sushi when your craving and don't wanna take a drive or pay a lot! It's pretty good quality considering the area that it's in, and it's baked salmon is amazing! (almost identical to mikimoto, one of my favorite sushi places uptown) I got the spicy tuna roll here, and it was good, nothing to go crazy over. And I had the Bonzai noodle salad, which was good, again similar to Mikimoto. I have yet to try the poke or any other rolls, but from what I have eaten, it's really good! read more

Bonzai brought sushi back to the parish and for that i was very grateful. Ate there a lot for the first couple of years but have kind of slacked off on going recently. Its basically a "fast food" version of sushi rolls--which is not a bad thing. Easy to get on a whim and everyone there is really kind. I loved their Dorito-roll when it was first introduced (spicy snow crab in a soy wrap) but for some reason they've reduced the heat to the point where it just tastes like a traditional snow crab roll. Their Facebook is really helpful with a pictorial gallery of new and special menu items and deals for loyal customers. The punch card is awesome, especially when buying pricy food like sushi. I think the best thing to get there is a "Who-Dat roll". You get a choice of four items out of ten or so(such as tuna, snow crab, whitefish, smelt roe) to create your roll and a sauce (ponzo, eel, bonzai) for the price of a regular house roll.
