From the moment my friend and I walked in we could tell it wasn't going to be the best experience. First of all we had to seat ourselves and then NO ONE came to our table for about 10 minutes and it was NOT busy at all in the restaurant as there was only ONE other couple at another table. When our waitress DID come by, she wasn't very welcoming or friendly. She kind of acted distracted and a little annoyed for no particular reason. We placed an order of California Rolls and 2 ice teas and 2 miso soups. The soup was good. The California Rolls seemed a bit less than fresh. Also we needed a refill on the teas and it took quite awhile to even find our waitress. Seems she was busy on her cell phone and talking to the other waitresses who were also on their phones instead of working while we noticed atleast 2 dirty tables nearby that wasn't getting cleared and cleaned while the waitresses were laughing and talking in their cellphones and playing around. When we finally got the waitress attention to get our refills it took us about 10 minutes for her to even come back with our refills while our mouth was burning from the wasabi sauce for the sushi. Suffice to say we felt VERY dissatisfied and disappointed in our experience. The staff at Umi acted entitled and disinterested and acted like they was at some kind of party instead of a workplace. My reclamation if you want good service and good sushi is to ho to Akasuka nearby or elsewhere but AVOID Umi at all costs. Really poor service and substandard sushi read more

Decided I wanted Hibachi, so I gave Umi a try. The restaurant is kind of dark when you walk in and there's a stand at the entrance that tells you to go orders can be placed in the back. I grabbed a menu and decided to order the steak and shrimp dinner. It comes with white rice, but I paid extra for hibachi rice. The meal also comes with vegetables, noodles, soup, 1container of yum yum sauce, and salad. At the back where you place to go orders, there's a sign that says no refunds or exchanges, our food is not a taste test. I thought this sign was a bit much, you can say no refunds or exchanges but the last part seemed unnecessary. My food took about 15-20 minutes to come out. The best items were the noodles, vegetables, and soup. The rice didn't have much flavor at all, I had to add soy sauce and yum yum sauce to enjoy it. The steak was chewy and shrimp didn't have much flavor either. I was pretty disappointed. I give it a 3 instead of 2 because the workers I interacted with were nice, the noodles and veggies were good, and it seemed like a good bit of food for the price just wish it had more flavor. read more

Everyone was very nice! The hibachi chef was very funny and friendly. The portions were huge it will definitely be 2 meals!

Today I had to call the police on a worker at this restaurant and I have filed a complaint with the BBB. my family was treated very poorly at this restaurant. The chef had come out to cook our food but took our food away because another customer walked in. When we got up to leave and go eat elsewhere a worker then followed us out the door and took a picture of my license plate with her phone. I called the police and explained everything and was told management handed it and we were free to leave. Do not eat here. read more

Besides my favorite cook, this place is TRASH! They are not favorable to African Americans! I came here with 6 kids for my daughter's 12th birthday, most of them are athletes and are tall for their ages. They thought we were lying about their age and then told me that we can only get 2 kid meals! At this point I should have just not patronized this business, but instead I had all of the kids to pull out their grades to show these ppl that they are 7th graders. That made me feel very uncomfortable! I really hate writing reviews like this but this was the worst sushi I have had in my life. A few friends and I ordered takeout last night and were incredibly disappointed. First, they forgot some items in our order (soup, a roll, and an app), so we had to drive all the way back to pick them up. Second, and worst of all, the rolls were just awful. The ones I tasted were the Crunchy Dynamite, House Special Roll, and Burning Man rolls. The "crunchy" was not at all crunchy and tasted like stale cardboard. It was to the point that it rendered the crunchy dynamite and burning man rolls inedible. Then, the tuna in the house special roll was crunchy... a jarring experience because that is NOT how tuna is supposed to be. I ended up having to throw away all of the rolls I tried, which is such a waste! As far as first impressions go, this wasn't a good one. Ordering on the phone was easy enough, but it was downhill from there. Upon walking in, I was greeted with an empty hostess podium I was just picking up a to-go order, so I didn't necessarily need any staff to greet me there, but it turns out some directions would have helped. I look to the left and saw what looked like an empty checkout counter, a sign on it saying to-go orders should be picked up in the back. So I looked to the back and saw two counters: yet another empty counter in the center by the drink machine, and the sushi counter with two staff behind it. I pick the sushi counter, walked to it, and was redirected to the empty counter by the drink machine. The counter was manned once I got there, but the employee had been sitting next to the sushi counter. Aside from the empty counters and confusion and picking up my order, let me describe the interior of the restaurant. I went at night, so maybe that had something to do with it, but it felt like walking into a cave or warehouse. The lighting was dim - not in a romantic way - and the ceiling was dark and industrial. Maybe it would be better in the daytime, but it looked like all the windows were covered, so I'm not sure. Anyway, pickup confusion + empty counters + dim interior = uninviting feeling. I was eager to get out of there. Once I got home, I encountered the final issue: the sushi itself. I don't claim to be a sushi expert, but I'm fairly sure that fresh ingredients and good technique/knife work are important parts of making sushi. Looking at the sushi I received, one of the pieces was suspicious even before I flipped it over. And once I did flip it over... well, look at the picture for yourself. Again, I'm not an expert, so maybe it was fine to eat, but *because* I'm not an expert I opted to err on the side of caution and ended up throwing that piece away. Overall, not a particularly great experience. I was tempted to rate even lower, but I'm waiting to try them at least one more time to see if maybe it was just an off experience. read more

An evening of memories and good time turn into a bad experience. My youngest son turning 10. At the Begging we inform our waitress that we were celebrating our son birthday and in the past they always bring a treat for the party. after our meal our waitress never came by with the desert and when we reminded her she brought a desert that was sour and expired. all 6 pieces of bread were really bad and disgusting. Then topped with some sweet mayo dressing barely tolerable. Then I got a paris roll with shrimp tempura and tuna. This was soaked in a disgusting syrup they called eel sauce. Both rolls so full of corn syrup and so sweet they were not edible. When I think of sushi I don't think if sugar. I think savory. Maybe the hibachi is good. Who knows. UNSANITARY PRACTICES I placed a phone order for hibachi rice without eggs at Umi in Chalmette on 7/10/2024. When I arrived, the cashier advised the order was not ready. While waiting, I observed another customer, who had received the wrong order, returned her order of hibachi rice to the cashier. Rather than discarding the returned food, the cashier casually re-bagged the returned item and presented me with a dish someone else had previously picked over. This incident occurred under the watchful eyes of the owner, who chose to remain silent until I demanded a refund. I've been going here for years, and that's given me the ability to experience the unfortunate decline first hand. I recently got the teriyaki chicken, tuna roll, and rock n roll. The only decent thing was the rock n roll. The teriyaki chicken was extremely overcooked; rubbery and unseasoned. The tuna roll had a weird floral taste??? Here's another restaurant I tried to-go as I am learning about Chalmette. First, Umi and Umi 2 (Westbank) are not related ( despite the same font on the front of their menus, but whatever). You have to walk to the back of seating to put in your order (if you didn't call it in - hey I have to check it out first). People weren't lying about it being sticky in here and the floor is all concrete, but it's semi packed with people. Staff a little non-chalant, but they may just be tired from a long busy day (I get it). Two hibachi tables and the rest is regular tables. Basic decor, they might be remodeling as they move forward. Menus in restaurant are super used. I have a to-go menu, So I'll add the updated pics. Ok so I ordered two crunchy rolls and the sexiest man roll. The crunchy roll looked very different from what we're used to seeing in the city and the west bank. My son said it was very bland. The sexiest man roll just didn't hit the spot for me. So, El Paso the night before and Umi the next day. Recommended by our server Lauren from the night before at a restaurant directly across from Umi, we had to try it. She was right as was our server, the crab Rangoon is the way to go and is a must get here. Perfectly deep fried and filled with a generous mixture of crab and cream cheese and might I say more crab than cream cheese these were devoured in minutes. After appetizers my Monsta sushi roll came out. Generously filled with spicy tuna and spicy crawfish and topped with white fish and BBQ eel this roll was amazing. And the first time a roll was actually spicy! Whew! So good! My wife ordered her fave...Hibachi noodles with shrimp and a crunchy dynamite roll. Both were delicious and fed us for dinner too! I've probably eaten at two sushi restaurants in the NOLA area. Umi is my favorite so far! PARKING/SERVICE/DECOR: There's parking in the back and if I can recall from memory..I think it's small. Upon stepping in, the place was kinda empty but we were seated and greeted immediately by the host. There are tables and booths on the left side, hibachi grills on the right, and the sushi bar in the back. The staff is friendly and they're always around. Our waiter always checked in on us which is a plus! The decor is quite plain...not much decorations. The tables and chairs are like wood minus the hibachi. FOOD: The sushi rolls my cousin and I ordered were very good & delicious! We had the Baked Salmon for appetizer but I didn't get a chance to eat it till I got home. Maybe because I ate it so late that the taste was gone..but it was alright. I tasted more of the crab meat inside than the salmon itself. Umi Roll was alright..not my favorite. I've had rolls similar to this before, so maybe it's because my taste buds are used to it. Black Dragon Roll - There's also a Green Dragon Roll. The difference between the two is that Black Dragon has eel/unagi on top wheres the Green Dragon is avocado on top. I'm a fan of unagi so I ordered Black Dragon. Black Dragon Roll is probably one of the best rolls I've eaten! My opinion may be biased because I'm a fan of eel/unagi. Usually I order Unagi Roll which consists of only two pieces per order but Black Dragon has probably about 8 pieces! The happiness it filled my mouth..sigh! :) The only problem I had with this one is that it had a lot of sauce..which made it a bit too sweet. Jamaican Roll was great! I loved it! I'm a fan of seafood, so salmon also has a place in my heart. This was recommended by our server because I wanted something with baked or smoked salmon. (Not a fan of raw fish/salmon such as sashimi). It was delicious and if you love salmon as much as me, I suggest you give it a try! I was comparing this roll to the Lion King Roll (made in California; also my #1 favorite roll - baked salmon) and it may not be as good as the Lion King roll, but it's a good enough substitute for me. The only problem I had was that the pieces aren't as big compared to the LKR but it did have about the same amount of pieces as Black Dragon. Overall, Black Dragon Roll and Jamaican Roll were my favorites. I would definitely come back and order these again. This place is a must try. Wish I wasn't so far so I can come back! read more

Loved this place till me and my whole family got food poisoning it was the worst experience we've had, we haven't gone since.

We ordered several dishing including the tasty Softshell Crab Sushi, They were not freshly fried crabs. The large dynamite rolls had plump shrimp in them which is a nice bonus. The spice tuna rolls, were average. There was an abundance of options to choose from. However, I don't think this restaurant is any better or matches the quality of the neighborhood sushi establishments I often frequent . The restaurant was not full when I arrived. I have had sushi and hibachi here. The parking lot is shared with the pet store next door, though from what I understand, they do not source their menu from them. (My lame attempt at a joke.) The interior could probably be best with a good deep cleaning, and fresh paint job. The wait staff seems a bit forgetful of what each roll is once they deliver it to the table, though they are quick to greet and seat you. Half of the restaurant is a hibachi grill(s), the other half booths and tables. The restrooms are neat, clean and well stocked. The hibachi is great, the first time I ordered it, I only got the hibachi rice I had to order separately, the second time, I got steamed white rice and the hibachi rice, both on Saturdays at lunch time, both at the same price. The rolls I have gotten, I have been pleased with. The other people I have come with have also been happy with their meals. When you order a soda, it is brought to you in a small plastic bottle, with a glass of ice mostly melted. I sat at the hibachi grill tonight, and I was impressed. I was sitting by myself, but the chef put on quite a show for the other grill. It was a bit of a wait for me, as there was one full table he was cooking for when I came in. I would suggest asking how long of a wait there will be if there is only one hibachi chef on duty. The food is good enough on its own to be worthy of 5 stars, the atmosphere and wait staff are 3 stars, so four stars it is for the restaurant as a whole.
