This downtown Montreal restaurant is chic, lounge music piped through to complete their "chicness". They were busy that Friday, with most table and sushi bar seating filled. (Speaking of bars, I had a glass of white, and tried a tasty lycheetini.) The highlight of Sho-dan's arsenal is their assortment of specialty "concept" rolls which can be extreme in presentation, and atypical in taste, even to the most seasoned sushi ranger. My friends are Japanese restaurant enthusiasts and loved the quality of cuisine, from the tempura, to the slices of raw goodness, down to the perfectly matching sauces for each dish. Don't forget to get dessert sushi - the mango one is amazing. Dinner at Sho-dan blew my MIND. Be warned, prices are higher than average, but it's worth splurging for, just this once. Why can't we have sushi this good in Ottawa?…read more I almost NEVER go out for sushi in Ottawa because, like most of the Chinese food, it fucking sucks here. As someone who lived on the West Coast for 10 years, I cannot and WILL NOT give anyone 5 stars for their sushi unless it was just caught that day. Sho-Dan was VERY close to achieving the impossible - a 5 star sushi in landlocked Eastern Ontario. This place was fantastic service, high high quality fish, superb rolls, perfectly timed delivery to the bar where we sat.... Delicious cold sake and beer to accompany. I think the bill came out to $160 for the 2 of us (I didn't pay) but we left very full and content. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what we ordered (was a boozy night afterwards)....but 100% certain that I will recommend and be back.

Went there tonight since it's 7 minutes walk from our hotel. Menu isn't extensive at all, for sushi…read morethey have tuna, fresh or smoke salmon, tilapia, shrimp, eel and tamago. For the roll, we ordered Rubic's cube (5/5)- tempura crunchy mixed with masago and spicy mayo sandwiches between rice then topped with fresh salmon & avocado. Very creative and original taste. Dragon roll (3/5)- shrimp tempura, masago, cucumber with spicy mayo in the inside and topped with avocado. Underwhelming in flavor, need something else in there to push more flavor out. Chicken teriyaki (5/5)- love the teriyaki sauce they made, not overly sweet or runny. Serves with lettuce and shredded carrots. Just heads up, they don't serve any alcohols there. Overall this is not a bad option for a cheap sushi, just not enough choices to make me go there every time we are in Montreal.

Located minutes away from Old Montreal, this sushi restaurant is a decent mid-tier establishment…read more You won't be embarrassed taking your in-laws here or going on a first date here. And, you won't break the bank either. Our Chirashi Don consisted of some pretty exotic fish including King Salmon, Blue Fin Tuna and Hamachi (Yellow Tail). Nice presentation, with the slices of fish enveloping a bed of minced salmon and rice. It was a lot more filling then it appeared. The Salmon Yaki included a large serving of fresh salmon and a bowl of rice. This isn't the dry, overcooked salmon you'd get at the food court. The dish also included sauteed mushrooms and zucchini wedges. Salmon was so soft and moist. Wonderful choice if you are hungry. If after your meal, of you are still hungry but running low on cash, you will be pleased to know that there is a Poke Bowl place next door.

Nestled in the heart of downtown Montréal among corporate and commercial buildings, Saiko Bistro…read moreIsakaya may have an unassuming appearance. We had reserved a table. When seated we were changed to the counter seating, because we picked Omakase option. Our evening centered around the Omakase 5 option, which not only allowed us to sample some of the chef's creations but also provided a front-row view at the counter to witness the preparation of each course. The Omakase 5 included two appetizers, a main course, 10 pieces of sushi, and a dessert--a generous and fulfilling selection that left us full and content. A standout dish was the fish consommé, a clear, delicate broth cooked over six hours and served piping hot. The chef guided us to dip each sushi piece halfway into the broth, balancing between warmth and the sushi's coolness. The heavily vinegared rice, when paired with the rich consommé, created a beautiful contrast of flavors, temperature and textures. The sushi course was equally remarkable, presenting ten pieces, each with a small mound of rice topped by a thick, fresh slice of fish. Two King salmon pieces--one marinated for eight hours and the other served raw--showcased the nuanced ways salmon can be enjoyed. The selection of tuna varieties (big-eyed, yellowfin, bluefin, and fatty tuna) provided a spectrum of flavors, each distinct and satisfying. Scallops, shrimp, sea urchin, and eel followed, rounding out a "parade of fish" that captured the freshness and diversity of the ocean. Our meal concluded with a cheesecake dessert, a sweet and light finish that topped off an excellent evening.

It was a bit of a wait to get in even on a Wednesday night in November as we did not have a reservation but they promptly seated us. There are two floors so it is crowded but spacious enough for plenty of food at each table. They have lots of sushi you can't even get at most sit down places in the US including lots of torched nigiri and roll options. The salmon don and ramen were great as well as were the desserts. The service was prompt and we ordered with an iPad. We tried some great sake too. The only complaint regarding service is they gave us a plate for another table but it happens. Would love to come back here again in Montreal as this may be the best of many AYCE sushi places but would love to try another one too. All in all, this was a wonderful last meal in this amazing city.

There is a male host/front-of-house staff member who is extremely rude and does not know how to speak to customers. He was impolite from the start, and the situation got worse as the night went on. We were a group of four. We placed our order and waited 30 minutes, only to find out that the restaurant had cancelled and thrown out our order. Meanwhile, we watched people who arrived after us getting their food. When we asked why we had no sushi, we were simply told, "Sorry, we lost your order, please order again." When our food finally arrived, the same rude host brought it to our table. He literally threw the plates down and walked away without saying a word. To top it off, they automatically added a tip to the bill, which felt aggressive considering how poorly we were treated. They did not deserve that tip. I do want to express out Rebecca, our waitress, need retraining, ande the male host completely ruined the experience. He is the reason I will never recommend this restaurant. You need to do better.
