Prices are reasonable, and it is a pleasant and peaceful stroll around this large scenic property admiring various blooming natives, even in December. We found the bush poppy we were looking for as well as a few other blooming natives that caught our eye. The owner is very helpful and gives good planting tips.

Nothing is labeled, the price list is online, and good luck trying to use your cell phone. One will have a hard time navigating rows of plants that could resemble weeds unless you know what you're looking at, but that's extremely exciting to me seeing a tiny plant that later would turn in a beautiful specimen. If you did your homework on Calscape,, have a plan and a list, the owner is an excellent resource on growing natives, and he will help you pick out the best plants. I have bought here one gallon plants that have grown in 20' shrubs and many that have died because of my ignorance of caring for CA native plants like the plants you buy from Armstrong Nurseries, I overwatered, planted in the late spring-summer and used very little mulch. Sixteen years ago I bought here a couple of Matillija poppies plants in one gallon pot, that did horribly in the beginning thrusted in my nasty compacted clay soil but later that fall were transplanted in fallen rock hillside and now they cover a entire hillside. The plants here are wonderful but like most gardeners I'm really impatient and want to hurry nature up to look like Santa Barbara botanic garden. Bob has his own variety of local Ceanothus that I can't wait to see bloom in my garden. FYI, I have planted about 500 natives, likely many, many more plants purchased from all over LA/ Ventura/ Santa Barbara nurseries. I killed a lot of natives, to the sorrow of my wallet as these plants cost $12-45 depending on the species. I continue to try my best to introduce native CA locally sourced plants with the scope of helping local ecology, save money on irrigation and possibly avert the fire reaching my house. Also, Bob's plants are really inexpensive compared to other nurseries, unless you get smart and buy most plants in 4" pots, but you won't find these here. I don't get carried away buying a plant unless I think it will thrive in my garden, experimentation leads to a lot of disappointments, unless you are blessed with great draining soil and have full sun and available water. The plants here are $8 for one gallon, a great price specifically if you get something a bit more established. Ask Bob if your desired plant been recently transplanted. And Bob is right, visit the Santa Barbara botanical garden; it is the best inspiration because looking at newly sowed plants you'll never guess how big or invasive they will get. This place is a treasure and consider yourself lucky if you're close by, as you could do your plant purchasing in stages since most CA nurseries won't have a complete planting list.

We had a designer develop a conceptual plan, but it did not fully address the engineering issues. When we met John Arney at Helix Landscape Construction, we knew we'd found the right person and the right company for the job. Sloping below street level, our front yard posed an interesting challenge to keep rain runoff out of our sump system as much as possible. The design incorporated the concept of a rocky swale to collect runoff, but John engineered all the details to including french drains to direct runoff into the landscape to re-charge the local water table for the signature bonsai tree and other plants envisioned in the plan. Throughout the project, John took the time to understand our aesthetic for the yard, and provided advice on so many details as it took shape. He traveled with us to rock yards and specialty nurseries to help find the perfect elements. John brought both great design ideas and the technical know-how we needed to make our vision a reality. Over the course of the two weeks he spent with us, I felt he truly became our partner in the project, which made it a pleasure to work with him and his team. As for execution, John's team was efficient, conscientious and respectful of us and our neighbors. The project was completed on time, despite discovery of a massive root system left behind from a previous tree removal, and many other tweaks to the effort made along the way. We are thrilled with the results and would recommend John for any landscape project you might have.

It's a huge outdoor nursery (and I mean huge) and the spectrum of plants and pots is amazing. Now I will say this: dont go expecting a Lowe's or Home Depot Garden department set up. It is a outdoor nursery, and you will find yourself navigating a few different areas of crammed paths. overall, the plants are beautiful and healthy, Rod is so kind and knowledgeable, and the prices are always ideal. I bought 4 plants for $40 when just one of the larger indoor plants would be $40 at Lowe's. Rod- you are officially my plant master and your nursery is the only place I'll be going in the future!

I was pleasantly surprised to show up and find a sea of succulents. So many options and unique varieties of succulents that I've never seen. I'm a succulent lover so I was in heaven! They have many different sizing options as well. Great value! They have a special for a whole flat for $55 and there's well over 60 succulents that fit in the flat. They accept cash and card. The quality of the succulents is great too. They look so fresh and healthy. You can find many other things aside from succulents. Pots, statues, fruit trees, herbs. You name it, they probably have it. The woman working there today was so nice, informative, and helped me carry my things to my car. A must if you're looking to support a local small business with great plant options.
