Fabulous restaurant! The ambience is very cool, and the service is terrific ("they certainly kept us hydrated," as my friend remarked). We came here with five of us, and the large strips platter was just the right size for us. Both the sweet soya garlic and the spicy chicken were incredibly delicious. The batter is particularly good--very thin but crisp and not too oily. The pickled daikon that came on the side was perfect to cut the spice. We also got a side of fries, which were perfect: pillowy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Overall, highly recommend as an ideal lunch spot. read more

BF and I went to Bonchon Chicken in downtown Salem, and honestly I wasn't too impressed. We went for restaurant week and thank god they had a specialized menu for it. Their normal menu is actually quite expensive for chicken, but hey the flavor is important. We grabbed Takoyaki, Shumai and their chicken tenders, half spicy and half soy for 20 dollars (2 apps and 1 main). The takoyaki was rather mushy and didn't have much of a distinctive flavor. The shrimp shumai had almost the same problem. The only reason to come back is for the soy flavored chicken. Damn it was delicious. It had a great balance of flavor, although I felt like the chicken tenders were a bit dense themselves. This is definitely my favorite soy flavored chicken I've ever had. However, the spicy chicken was WAY too spicy and I wish they told us ahead of time. Hello tummy ache. I ended up grabbing some ranch to try and counteract the spicy flavor. These were not my taste, but I can see a lot of people liking them! The biggest let down was the service. There were only 2 tables seated and the service was painfully slow. It was mostly young adults working, who were watching the TV's in front of the bar, and taking their lunch break as I'm desperately trying to motion someone over for extra water. Especially when it's that slow, I'd hope for a more personalized visit when I told our server it was our first time there, but he didn't give us any recommendations, ideas or what we might want to try first. When I first moved to a new job in Salem, I was really excited when I saw that BonChon would be opening. I waited for weeks for them to open, became distracted by my new work and forgot all about them, and then recently remembered them on a lunch break and walked down to see if they were ready for business. To my delight they were, and I had a lovely lunch here. As a solo female I felt quite comfortable sitting at the bar for lunch here. The restaurant has an industrial chic vibe and the staff were very friendly. The owner went out of his way to greet me, explain the menu, and make recommendations for my first meal. I decided to go with the boneless chicken in soy garlic sauce with white rice and it was delicious. They have a lot of affordable lunch options if you want to try a few things. Awesome wings and the owner and staff are so nice and attentive. The atmosphere is very urban and metro. Got the garlic wings. Phenomenal. You can mix and match legs and wings or get just all wings or just all legs. Defiantly will be back. They have multiple locations as well. I decided to give this location another chance. I dined here on a Saturday evening. It was pretty much empty. The service was terribly slow! It took over half an hour for our chicken to come out. Once our order arrived our appetites had left. The chicken was decent though. They also do not serve sake which was very disappointing for me. I'm already not the biggest fan of Bonchon, but my friend really loves the restaurant, so we decided to go while we were both in Salem. She ordered the bibimbap, while I ordered the pork buns. We also shared a dish of spicy rice cakes. The restaurant was relatively empty while we were there, but service was a bit slow. It took almost 30 minutes for all of our food to come out, and everything was spaced out, which was fine for us for the most part. The spicy rice cakes are okay. They're not amazing or memorable, but still good for a hungry appetite. The pork buns were not good, however. There was no flavor and it was literally a tiny piece of pork with a single cucumber. The buns were a bit soggy, and overall, I felt like I was chewing for way longer than necessary. If you go to Bonchon, stick with their chicken. The rest of their menu still can be improved and worked on, especially since almost nothing really had much flavor and portions were quite tiny for the price. read more

I was surprised to see a Bonchon in Salem-- one of my go to favorite places to eat in Virginia and DC. The service was good-- everyone was very friendly and food came out quickly. I was a little disappointed by the size of the strips, as others have already noted-- they're smaller than other locations. But the flavor was consistent, the chicken was crispy, and the pickled radish was crunchy. I love Bon Chon. My boyfriend introduced me a few months ago and I could not wait to try the location in Salem since it's so close to home. Just went during their soft opening and got takeout. Ordered hot chicken boneless strips, soy chili wings, plain wings, fries and rings. Soy chili wings were by far the best- super crispy and delicious. Hot strips were not as crispy and were CRAZY HOT, but still tasty. Fries and rings are very crispy, but generally standard issue. I think this place will improve after the soft opening ends. During this phase, they have a limited menu (all fried chicken available, though), limited hours, and no alcohol. Dining space looks pretty nice, though. Definitely worth a try!! read more

New Place. Nice Setting. Great Food. The Soy/Spicy wings are to die for! but the Allston location has the better salmon avocado ball salad. they just don't make it the same way. I've enjoyed the food before at Far From the Tree, and in fairness, I've never been to restaurant, but I will never order delivery from here again. It's a complete scam. Online it said it would take an hour and forty-five minutes, so I called to check after fifteen minutes and was told the food was almost done and would be there within the hour. It was another hour and a half before it arrived, ice cold. Being told the food was almost done over an hour before I got it certainly explains why it was cold when it arrived. read more

*will note that was food was cooked fine Went to this restaurant today because it sounded good, disappointed because first off we weren't given any napkins or chopsticks even when we asked the hostess for them after about 20 minutes from being seated (my husband had the grab some from another table) Second my husbands food was legit refrigerated cold (and I could see a girl was given her food a few minutes after us and it was sizzling hot) we also weren't checked on once if we needed anything else or how our food was. It was easy to see that they were short staffed (which the hostess told people that came in after us) and that the food runner was he only one running food. I think the hostess should learn to help out instead or just sitting waiting for people to come in. My husband didn't complain about the food because he is also a chef and just doesn't do that. I did let the girl know after we paid that my husbands food was cold even when It came out and that no one checked on us once. All and all the menu seems pretty great I think they were just short staffed and we got the short end of that stick with out cold food. Noting against the person who owns this, just might want to go over some things with the staff. read more

I've been to the Bonchon in Allston, and I've enjoyed their bibimbap. however, the bibimbap here was extremely bland. Even after I drenched it with the spicy sauce they provided, there was a distinct lack of flavor in the dish covered under the spiciness. I was not the only one who noticed this - a person in my group had the same issue, and said she's had way better bibimbap in the past. Overall, a very disappointing dinner. But the waitresses were lovely and my brother enjoyed his food, so I'll give this place a 2 star rating. read more

The food was unappetizing, large soft pieces of chicken skin and what looked like cut up chunks of string cheese that didn't melt. As a Salem local, I was super super excited when I saw that bonchon was opening in salem. Everyone in my life heard about it. Huge fan. I used to travel all the way to Allston and Harvard sq from Salem to get to Bonchon often. Galbi ribs, lychee sake, some of the BEST sushi, other AUTHENTIC Asian items, and of course those delicious wings- I could down like 100 wings to myself. This was my heaven on earth. You can understand my disappointment when I arrived at the Salem bonchon to see menu. There was not much variety, but things like a goddamn chicken ceasar wrap and other similar basic stuff etc on the menu. My heart was crushed. I even went several times thinking that maybe it was an off day, maybe I'd like something if I kept trying other things. Unfortunately everything sucked- Like the person cooking didn't know how to cook or something or maybe the food has been out for too long? For example, their signature delicious wings were sooooooo dry af. The chicken meat was like jerky. The staff vibe is really awkward in there too. It's been a while since I've eaten here though.
