Edit! 01/2018: Still delicious, just unsure as to why my pork buns come without anything but the meat now. Occasionally also has the cucumber. I've tried leaving notes on my order but it still comes that way so I guess it's served different now. All the food still tastes the same though. Great food for any day when u need a nice pick me up, especially the spicy chicken that there's the love of my life (sorry honey!) Doing my new years dieting so I can't have any right now but you bet I will in the future! What can I say, it's amazing. So amazing. Beyond amazing. Just left this quaint little restaurant a little while ago. Adequately staffed and slightly busy but nothing too crazy, which was nice to find in Salem on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the midst of the town's busiest month. A much easier commute than going all the way into the Allston/Brighton area. Our server was a nice guy, attentive when necessary and apologetic when our food took a little longer than expected. Service was smooth throughout. Overall friendly environment from all staff members. The only let down was the crispy salmon ball/salad, which tasted a little different than the one in Allston... but my boyfriend and I both agreed it was probably the texture difference from the chopped cucumbers versus the diced cucumbers this Bon Chon uses. The pork buns came in a trio, and was extremely fatty (pork belly, what can you expect?) - just wished it was seasoned a little more. Felt like I was just chomping into unsalted fat. The sauce helped, but didn't save it unfortunately. Bibimbap with the bulgogi was great. Chicken was great (I'll never touch the spicy chicken, I don't know how you spicy food lovers do it! Lol). Awesome wings and the owner and staff are so nice and attentive. The atmosphere is very urban and metro. Got the garlic wings. Phenomenal. You can mix and match legs and wings or get just all wings or just all legs. Defiantly will be back. They have multiple locations as well. Just went during their soft opening and got takeout. Ordered hot chicken boneless strips, soy chili wings, plain wings, fries and rings. Soy chili wings were by far the best- super crispy and delicious. Hot strips were not as crispy and were CRAZY HOT, but still tasty. Fries and rings are very crispy, but generally standard issue. I think this place will improve after the soft opening ends. During this phase, they have a limited menu (all fried chicken available, though), limited hours, and no alcohol. Dining space looks pretty nice, though. Definitely worth a try!! read more

2 stars for great service but it stops there. We were excited to see a Bonchon here in Salem. We moved from IL and loved the location in Schaumburg. The wings and fries were consistent with Other location. However, the katsu and bulgolgi tacos were awful. Katsu was dry and over cooked. Rice was dry as well. Slaw and sauce were also inconsistent with other location. Slaw wasn't crispy and fresh. The bulgolgi meat tasted like it was spoiled. As if it had been frozen and thawed a number of times. My girlfriend and I usually go to the Bonchon in Allston and sometimes Harvard square, this by far is our favorite bon chon location. I'm surprised the salem location isn't busier compared to Allston, because the salem location has a bar with 2 flat screen TV's and overall the salem restaurant has a better layout. The other difference between this location and others is that they only give you the radish as a free side dish, not the coleslaw, you have to pay extra but trust me it's worth it. For someone visiting this place for the first time, Bonchon is known for their wings. I'm sure the other Korean dishes on the menu is very good, but I recommend sticking with the wings. The wings come in two flavors, soy sauce or spicy, you can choose to get half of each flavor. I feel the wings taste better here compared to other locations and I think it's because they take their making the wings. Other locations can get so busy they rush and the wings doesn't taste as good. Overall, the golden state warriors blew a 3-1 lead in the NBA finals. Just kidding, overall this is my favorite location for bonchon. Hopefully this location gets busier because this place has great food and a great atmosphere. read more

If you're looking for the real deal you'll have to go Allston! Yes the parking is easier here and you won't be waiting in an endless line for a table but one glance at the menu and you'll notice how condensed it is! There's no sushi and many of the traditional Korean dishes aren't on there. It's a very Americanized menu to be honest. The bim bim bap is probably the most authentic offering, which wasn't bad, but normally comes plain with veggies and any other protein topping is extra charge, boooo! Also had this avocado ball, which is worth a try, filled with salmon and avocado, it's very fresh and tasty. The chicken I'd say was about right, very crunchy and fully coated in either a spicy or non spicy sauce. It was good and a must try for sure since it's what the name stands for, but don't expect it to fill you up. read more

BF and I went to Bonchon Chicken in downtown Salem, and honestly I wasn't too impressed. We went for restaurant week and thank god they had a specialized menu for it. Their normal menu is actually quite expensive for chicken, but hey the flavor is important. We grabbed Takoyaki, Shumai and their chicken tenders, half spicy and half soy for 20 dollars (2 apps and 1 main). The takoyaki was rather mushy and didn't have much of a distinctive flavor. The shrimp shumai had almost the same problem. The only reason to come back is for the soy flavored chicken. Damn it was delicious. It had a great balance of flavor, although I felt like the chicken tenders were a bit dense themselves. This is definitely my favorite soy flavored chicken I've ever had. However, the spicy chicken was WAY too spicy and I wish they told us ahead of time. Hello tummy ache. I ended up grabbing some ranch to try and counteract the spicy flavor. These were not my taste, but I can see a lot of people liking them! The biggest let down was the service. There were only 2 tables seated and the service was painfully slow. It was mostly young adults working, who were watching the TV's in front of the bar, and taking their lunch break as I'm desperately trying to motion someone over for extra water. Especially when it's that slow, I'd hope for a more personalized visit when I told our server it was our first time there, but he didn't give us any recommendations, ideas or what we might want to try first. I'm already not the biggest fan of Bonchon, but my friend really loves the restaurant, so we decided to go while we were both in Salem. She ordered the bibimbap, while I ordered the pork buns. We also shared a dish of spicy rice cakes. The restaurant was relatively empty while we were there, but service was a bit slow. It took almost 30 minutes for all of our food to come out, and everything was spaced out, which was fine for us for the most part. The spicy rice cakes are okay. They're not amazing or memorable, but still good for a hungry appetite. The pork buns were not good, however. There was no flavor and it was literally a tiny piece of pork with a single cucumber. The buns were a bit soggy, and overall, I felt like I was chewing for way longer than necessary. If you go to Bonchon, stick with their chicken. The rest of their menu still can be improved and worked on, especially since almost nothing really had much flavor and portions were quite tiny for the price. read more

I was surprised to see a Bonchon in Salem-- one of my go to favorite places to eat in Virginia and DC. The service was good-- everyone was very friendly and food came out quickly. I was a little disappointed by the size of the strips, as others have already noted-- they're smaller than other locations. But the flavor was consistent, the chicken was crispy, and the pickled radish was crunchy. Korean wings are something I wasn't expecting to find in Salem... So glad I did! The soy garlic was amazing... Spicy was very spicy! The girl that answered sounded annoyed and told me the delivery driver had 4 or 5 deliveries... called again at 8:55pm... guy answered and wasn't apologetic. I've enjoyed the food before at Far From the Tree, and in fairness, I've never been to restaurant, but I will never order delivery from here again. It's a complete scam. Online it said it would take an hour and forty-five minutes, so I called to check after fifteen minutes and was told the food was almost done and would be there within the hour. *will note that was food was cooked fine Went to this restaurant today because it sounded good, disappointed because first off we weren't given any napkins or chopsticks even when we asked the hostess for them after about 20 minutes from being seated (my husband had the grab some from another table) Second my husbands food was legit refrigerated cold (and I could see a girl was given her food a few minutes after us and it was sizzling hot) we also weren't checked on once if we needed anything else or how our food was. It was easy to see that they were short staffed (which the hostess told people that came in after us) and that the food runner was he only one running food. I think the hostess should learn to help out instead or just sitting waiting for people to come in. My husband didn't complain about the food because he is also a chef and just doesn't do that. I did let the girl know after we paid that my husbands food was cold even when It came out and that no one checked on us once. All and all the menu seems pretty great I think they were just short staffed and we got the short end of that stick with out cold food. Noting against the person who owns this, just might want to go over some things with the staff. read more
