There's a really cool bar when you walk in the seating is spaced well and has a tropical wood feeling . The shrimp topping the seafood jumbo were colossal. It was a nice roux and I really appreciate the level of heat not being excessive. Although I could handle more. The crab roll appetizer works with fries as a entrée lots of crab meat and super tasty fries. We had the shrimp bruschetta appetizer which was on point great spice and a vinegar undertone. We also ordered the mushroom appetizer and they came really nicely batter fried shiitake mushrooms and two really tasty dipping sauces. We were fighting over the mushrooms lol. The drinks with soursop and rum and the rose water drink were delivered perfectly mixed and frozen with no noticeable ice granules. Presentation is something that this group pays attention to. Bon Temps was a good time indeed. I went with some friends after work and we didn't know what to expect, but we arrived to find a DJ, an MC, and a videographer. People were having a time. In terms of food, we ordered a little bit of everything. The wings with crack sauce were not my favorite, but it was more the sauce than the wings. I started out with a beefy slider and it was ‍ flavorful, with a generous portion of meat, and the perfect amount of cooking time for the burger. It was juicy! I also had a fried chicken taco, and even got a disclaimer from a staff member about it being spicy. I guess they didn't see that I was Mexican I was ready. The taco isn't even close to being Mexican, but they don't claim to, so nbd. It was very flavorful and the hot sauce had a nice heat to it. I also got a chance to sample the savory beignets. Call me uncultured, but I only thought of them as desserts. These pimento cheese beignets were great though, would get again. The last food I tried was the mushroom grits. I've never been a fan of grits, but these were so good. Whole time I've been missing out on grits. In terms of service, it's hard to say exactly. My friends ordered food to-go at the same time as we ordered our dine-in food, but we had an extremely long wait to get our food and ended up being later for the show we were catching at 7pm. Wow. If you're looking for Creole with a kick -- this is it. It's only Day 7 since they opened, and clearly word has gotten out. My husband and our two kids went, and we literally grabbed the last available table. A little constructive feedback: the front area feels tight. There's no real hostess stand or waiting area, so when it's packed (which it was), it feels crowded. They may want to consider moving the larger tables toward the back and creating a bit more breathing room up front. That said -- the owners were incredibly kind. The wife was very apologetic and transparent that they were completely bombarded this weekend and hadn't anticipated how busy it would be. We genuinely appreciated the heads-up. And honestly? When the food and drinks are this good, it's hard to fault growing pains. They had already run out of the crispy pork belly, but we snagged the last order of the shrimp wontons -- absolutely delicious. They came with this smoky, slightly sweet sauce (not sure what it was exactly) that elevated the whole dish. Drinks were on point. The kids had bottled sodas (Fanta and root beer). I had an Old Fashioned -- perfectly balanced and smooth. My husband had the Soho Manhattan, and we both agreed it was one of the best Manhattans we've had... rivaling a great Black Manhattan. The husband/owner is the mixologist, and it shows. The kids ordered the hand-breaded buttermilk chicken tenders with hand-cut fries -- crispy, hot, and done right. Our waitress was fantastic. When we asked for recommendations, she didn't give the generic "everything's good." She had thoughtful opinions and could clearly explain the dishes. I was torn between the seafood gumbo and the duck & andouille gumbo -- she said the duck was more unique, and she was right. The spice level and depth of flavor were excellent. My only note: I personally like my gumbo piping hot temperature-wise (I'm particular about that!), and I wish it had come out hotter. My husband ordered the fish en papillote with mutton snapper (fish of the day). The flavor combination of the sauce, okra, and mashed potatoes was fantastic -- comforting but elevated. All in all? Incredible flavors, strong cocktails, and impressive execution for a restaurant that's only been open a week. We can't wait to go back and try more. read more

I had the pleasure of ordering to-go on their opening evening. The staff was welcoming and friendly. I ordered the Cantonese Pepper Shrimp, Nashville Hot wings, and Creole shrimp tacos. Everything was good. The fries are well seasoned. The Cantonese Pepper Shrimp are NOT for the those playing with liking spice. The shrimp are cooked perfectly. This has to be the worst dining experience in recent memory. The service was slow, disorganized, late, and orders were placed incorrectly. One entrée came out before the second one and the second entrée came out much later and was incorrect. The food was over cooked and over priced. The check was delayed for an extended period of time, and the owner offered to reduce the price by 10% and no other accommodations were given. Let's start with the location. It's tucked away in Midlothian in a small shopping center, and honestly, I love that. It's away from all the chaos, giving it this hidden gem energy. The space itself is intimate and cute, almost like a boutique-style restaurant with just the right amount of seating. Now the staff. Every time I walk in, I'm greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. You can tell they care. They are still fairly new, not even four months in, but they are already finding their rhythm beautifully. The servers are attentive without being overbearing, and the bartender? Elite. The drinks are crafted with intention and flavor. The owners, especially the chef, are incredibly personable, and you can feel the passion they have for what they're building. Now let's talk about what really matters... the food. Bon Temps brings together Trinidadian and Creole influences, and the result is bold, flavorful, and unforgettable. The drinks deserve their own moment. The lychee martini is dangerously good. It's one of those drinks that tastes so smooth you almost forget what it's capable of until it sneaks up on you. I also asked for their take on a French 75, and now it's my go-to every single visit. As for the food, I've worked my way through about 60 percent of the menu, and I'm not stopping anytime soon. The Cantonese shrimp is one of my favorite appetizers. It does bring the heat, so if spice isn't your thing, proceed with caution, but the flavor is absolutely worth it. Pair it with the shrimp and grits, and it balances everything out perfectly. The seafood gumbo? Rich, flavorful, and easily one of the best I've had. And I've had a lot. But now... let me say this clearly and confidently. The oxtails are the best in Virginia. Yes, I said it. After talking with the chef and learning about the three-day prep process, it all makes sense. The flavor, the tenderness, the depth, it's unmatched. If you're in the RVA area and you don't try the oxtails here, you are doing yourself a disservice. They are a little pricey, but absolutely worth every dollar. The portions are generous too. Everyone seems like they're nice people and the bar area is very cute but overall this just wasn't a good experience. They're understaffed. No one was around to greet us when we walked in. There were a few customers when we arrived but they weren't busy. We ordered pork belly but were later told it wouldn't be ready for another hour so we pivoted to wings. The default for the burgers I medium rare just fyi. Their $18 burger does not come with fries. Husband got the shrimp po boy that does not come with a sauce despite listing it on the menu. It's an extra $2 for a sauce and and it also doesn't come with fries. The wings were pretty good. Not the biggest fan of the sauce but they're the best thing we had. The burger was overcooked and forgettable. The beast sauce is barbecue based I guess and was nothing special. I wasn't a fan of the fries or the aioli. Po boy was fine, nothing to order again. Ironically we came here because I love lychee martinis but I never ordered one because there was no apparent bartender and I wasn't in the mood to pay for more disappointment. As we are wrapping up my husband realized we were charged for pork belly we never got. The waitress was very apologetic. They refunded the first charge then charged us for the correct amount. Other customers were enjoying their food (I heard people say they liked the shrimp and grits) but it was a miss for us. It was only their fifth day of opening and everything came out perfect and we did not have to wait long for the food. We had the shrimp and blue crab gumbo, shrimp and grits, pork belly appetizer, and tiger prawn appetizer along with some old-fashions. They were all wonderful. We forgot to take a picture of our dessert, which was a beignet with banana cream inside of it. It was so good! My order was not ready timely and there was no contact made regarding the delay which I found to be quite inconsiderate. There was nothing beyond an "I'm sorry" offered for the inconvenience exhibiting a lack of common courtesy as my order was provided T H I R T Y minutes after the scheduled time. The food we meh. The Buttery Crab Roll was overly drenched in butter and not palatable. Also, I was not expecting the Kids fish meal to be spicy - it's not denoted on the menu. This was our first time eating here, and we were really excited after seeing so many online video reviews praising both the food and the service. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. When we arrived, it took a while before we were even greeted, and it quickly became obvious that the hostess was also serving as the waitress for the entire restaurant. After being seated, it took about 20 minutes just to receive water. Since she was the only person working the floor, we decided to go ahead and place our full order at that time. We specifically told her we were ordering appetizers but wanted them served as our meals. My daughter also ordered shrimp and grits as her entrée. Unfortunately, it seemed like our request wasn't really heard because the appetizers came out early and were cold. Considering she was handling the entire restaurant alone and wasn't checking on the food, it wasn't surprising. After we finished the appetizers, my daughter's shrimp and grits still had not arrived. Once we were finally able to get the waitress/hostess's attention, she went to check on the order and later returned saying she wasn't sure what happened, but thought the meal may have been given to another table and that another order would be made. What I assume was the manager or owner later stopped by to ask about our experience. We explained that the food was cold and that there had been a major delay with the missing entrée. Her response was simply, "I'm sorry, I'll have to speak with the kitchen." Nothing was offered or done to make up for the experience, despite it being clear they were short staffed. On top of that, several menu items we attempted to order were unavailable. The reason I'm giving the rating that I am is because, despite everything, the food actually had good flavor. We started with drinks, and my husband and I both ordered the Rich Millionaire. It was perfect--smooth, balanced, and a great way to kick off the night. We started with the pimento cheese beignets and Cantonese Pepper shrimp, both were incredible. This Trinidadian family restaurant is just what we needed on a cold winter evening when we were missing home (New Orleans). If you've visited both NOLA and Trinidad, you will likely understand how the culinary styles intersect. RVA is definitely a foodie town, but it's still so hard to find people who have mastered the art of hot spicy without overpowering. The chef at Bon Temps was on the mark! My spicy fried chicken tacos were cooked & seasoned to perfection. The server took the time to go through the sauce options to ensure we found the one I was looking for. My husband who is SUPER picky about his burger meat (he's Argentine, so you get it) loved the burger, and yes, of course he got the fries (extra $3 but worth it - my daughter and I stole plenty from his plate). Our teenage daughter (lover of mushrooms) ordered the mushroom gumbo and did not leave a scrap on her plate. Note that the mushroom gumbo is not a Louisiana style gumbo (no self-respecting Cajun would put mushrooms in a gumbo), but it was, nonetheless, a delicious and aesthetically pleasing dish (large portion size too). The big fried mushroom on top that looked like a fried squid? Awesome! So flashy. So yum. I stole a bite. For dessert, the 3 of us split the fat boy chocolate cake. Glad we split it bc holy richness! It was not too sweet and, as the menu suggested, it conjured up that perfect chocolate cake of childhood dreams. No pasty icing here. All gooey goodness.
