Malabar House just opened their own space in December 2018. I overheard the owner talking to…read moreanother customer and said they used to operate out of a convenience store. I believe it was the Kash n Karry in Kanata, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyway, now they have their own restaurant in a strip mall in Bells Corners. They serve South Indian food and it's pretty good. Coming from Toronto, I've been spoiled by the likes of Babu (2 locations) and the Samosa King where you can get 5 samosas for $1 and lunch specials for $4.99 or less and everything is delicious. Since this is Ottawa though, the prices at Malabar are a bit higher, but still very reasonable. The lunch specials are about $9.99 and samosas are about $1.50 each. I got the 3 meat and 2 veg lunch special for $9.99. I believe the selection changes daily. The day that I went the meat curries were mutton, fish, and butter chicken. The vegetarian curries were mixed vegetables, and a plantain and bean curry. The curries came with basmati rice. I also got a bottle of water for $1. The mutton curry was my favourite. It was the spiciest of the lot, and very flavorful. I liked that it was boneless and lean. The butter chicken was lean boneless chicken breast and very creamy. The fish curry was also mild, but a bit spicier than the butter chicken. I liked that it didn't taste fishy. It was made with flakey white fish and I was happy that there were no bones! The vegetable curry had potatoes, peas, green beans, and carrots. It was very mild, but still had good flavour. The beans and plantain dish was a first for me. It was interesting, much drier than the other dishes and less flavourful to me. It was not bad, just not my favourite of the bunch. The rice was nice and fluffy. Service was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is mostly for takeout, but they do have 3 tables which seat 4 people each, so you can eat in if you want, which is what I did. The place looks very utilitarian, no real decor to speak of, so it's not like a date night destination, lol, but the food is good. When I was done I was given a small sample of dessert to try. It was a sweet lentil soup. I love South Indian snacks or short eats, so I decided to get a chicken roll to go, but they only had mutton rolls, samosas and fish cutlets in the display cabinet. I was told that they were frying up a new batch of chicken cutlets, so I decided to wait and get one of those. I think it was $1.50. It smelled so good that it didn't make it home because I ate it in the car, lol. It's basically potatoes, chicken and spices rolled in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. It was super oily/greasy, but tasted good, although I wouldn't have minded more chicken, but for the price, I can't complain too much. I'm looking forward to coming back to try the rolls, vadas, bondas and other treats. There was a couple there when I was there and they ordered some vadas but they were disappointed when the vadas arrived as they were not the type of vada they were expecting. They got the smooth fluffy vadas that look like donuts, but I think they were expecting the dense crunchy textured vada that look like hockey pucks (sorry, I don't know the correct name for the different types of vada), anyway the owner told them those are only made on Saturdays. They have milk hoppers too! They're called Appam on the menu :) The place is in a strip mall in Bells Corners, so lots of free parking. Same strip mall as the Scottish and Irish store and the Nepean Optometric Clinic.
