Amazing food!! We loved the food as it's really close to what you'd find at a roadside restaurant in India. Giving it a very similar feels as this too is literally roadside. We (2 of us) arrived for dinner at about 8 pm on 12 July 2026 for a quick bite to eat and entered the restaurant - it is very small and only a few tables. We were shown a table to sit and before we could sit, the lady told us that anything we order would need at least 20-25 minutes, since they cook everything from scratch. We said OK- looked at the menu and asked if appetizer like Bhel (which is basically a mixture and does not need any cooking at all), would also need 20 minutes. She said yes, it would take at least 20 minutes and if we cannot wait for 20 minutes, then this is not the place for us. We left the place and she did not even say a word. This was decent and some great options for vegetarians. There's seating inside, though limited and the building is shared with a cafe so figuring out the correct entrance was a little confusing. It'z self seating and you're able to make purchases via a QR code or the wait staff will take care of if it's slow. We ordered their masala dosa and an aloo tiki chaat. Both were good and filling. Best Indian food I've had in a while. Really authentic Bombay style street food. Very attentive service. Not sure if it was the owner, but there was a very sweet man working when we came in that was very polite and helpful. Amazing new find as Somerville gets uber with its restaurants, apartments, and residents. Four indoor dining tables and a few in the outdoor settings. Tried their rolls and these are the best we ever had! Mixed vegetables roll was just fantastic! Mango Lassi was also fresh and true classic. Too bad couldn't try all their menu items - but I feel it's only a matter of time. The place is super convenient to grab the food while you commute to work or pick up food when you return home. It looked like a take out place from outside so was in double mind but then decided to go inside as we saw few customers walk out after eating with happy faces. There was no wait time and the uncle serving us was very good with customer service. The food also was very good. Had vada paav, dahi puri, chola bhatura, mango lassi and gulab jaamun with rabadi. Love at first bite! I've gone here twice and plan to return. With a limited lunch break of 30 minutes, I can pop in here quickly with convenient parking right outside. The food is outstanding. Vijay is also a very welcoming owner! It looks like a takeaway spot, but I heard the owner say he plans to add tables. That said, the place has some ways to go. There are no menus, only a QR code, which is a deal breaker for some people. The online menu doesn't have descriptions of the food. And even if you dine in, you are eating on plastic. *Note about paper menus: I prefer them because I see all the food at a glance, and see things I may not have thought of. Scrolling on the phone gets tedious when you to have to click and go back several times as you browse. Right next to Somerville train station this tiny restaurant has a few tables and a nice clean restroom. It is a little chilly inside and very bright lights so I'd order your food to go. We got takeout and called ahead and the food was great! Especially loved the palak paneer and the chole bhature. The dahi puri was good but a bit too much yogurt for us. Owner keeps employee tips. This is a fact. If you wish to tip the waitress and cook, do it with cash and give it directly them. Do NOT put a tip amount on the credit card payment screen. Get transported to Bombay streets with some authentic canteen food. We tried the vada pav and dabeli. Both were just on point and delicious. The place is small and tables are limited but they have done a very nice job with the interiors. The staff was helpful and provided great service. Reason for the five stars 1) Freshness - cooked as you order and definitely can feel the quality of ingredients were great 2) Value - decently priced, pure vegetarian food. It has lots of options from street food to typical curries. 3) Customer Service - this is located right next to a metro station and many people need change sometimes. A lady came to say I can buy something cheap to break my $20 and get some change. The owner offered to just give the change instead of getting her to buy something. Small but great service for all, even if they don't buy. Tells a lot about the people who run this place. 4) Taste - Definitely on point with the taste here. Probably could use some more paneer in the paneer Makhani. 4-5 cubes doesn't do justice for the cost for that dish. 5) clean - all the tables were clean and had everything you would need to eat the food fresh if you choose to. My new most favorite place ever!!!! If you know how Mumbai's vada pav's are, these don't miss! They taste exactly the same and you will see me here all the time ordering just their vada pav. I've NEVER tasted any type of vada pav in Jersey ever like this. So now that I'm done raving about their vada pav, I'll dwell on their other items as well. Amazing restaurant, small but mighty!! This vegetarian Indian eatery is delicious and a hidden gem in Somerville. The food is delicious and the service is great too. While it is small with four tables inside, this is nothing to be wary of. The manager is very friendly and accommodating and I was so glad my friend chose this spot to try some Indian food! We got the pav bhaji special and it was so delicious. Too bad it was so good I couldn't even wait to photograph it! So flavorful, good spice, and served nice and hot. I don't usually order pav bhaji when I'm out but I am so glad I did!! My friends also really enjoyed the pav bhaji and the tomato flavors! That's always a win. The samosas were flavorful as well as the masala fries. My friends also enjoyed their roti. Personally the paneer makhani was not my favorite, I would give much more emphasis and praise to their more street food centric dishes. Like their inventive paneer patties -- so yummy! Most peeps got litmus tests, my bro and I got litness tests. Bombay Canteen's litness test included the following: - Paneer Masala Kati Roll - Aloo Masala Fries - Onion Dosa - Veg Cutlet - Navaratan Korma - Plain Paratha - Samosa - Chutney Cheese Sandwich - Two Limcas (gotta do it for the culture) - Mango Lassi Here's what imma say - the kati roll, sando and cutlet? bangers. The kati roll and sando were thicc bois. For 11 and 9 bucks respectively, your parents are gonna be proud you spending your money right. The cutlet coating crunch level hit harder than NAV does. Dosa - mid. Don't know dosa batter like that to know if its store bought, but I don't think they got the right equipment to get that crispy exterior needed on dosas. Navaratan Korma - mid. Non desi friendly level spice, but will admit the korma was loaded. No fishing in gravy required. Aloo Masala Fries - no masala on these fries b, pass Plain Paratha - Go to Patel Bros, check the frozen section, look for the Deep brand, there ya go Plain Paratha. Samosa - mid Limcas and Lassi always hit, nuff said. So what we saying? I think it woulda been very easy for the homies at Bombay Canteen to price gouge my non Desi peeps into thinking that they getting some authentic street food. Fortunately, they didn't. For everything I ordered it came out to 80 bucks. The frozen food that they reheated and reheated well are priced accordingly. Finally got here, every time I was over that way it was a Monday or I was in a rush for the train. Glad that I did, although a tiny place, has seating for a few, very clean inside. The owner was lovely. I ordered the vegetable pakora & mixed vegetable curry - spicy. The pakora was slightly different than I'm used too, maybe because the vegetables were shredded, still good, I prefer mine more spicy but I would order again. The mixed vegetable curry although I asked for spicy, I now know to ask for extra spicy there, I guess my level of spicy is hotter than most. The flavor was great though, many different spices in there. Earthy, some sweetness, well-balanced, richly spiced dish with deep savory flavors, I'd guess turmeric, coriander, cumin, masala, curry, cinnamon, and cloves, just to name a few. Black pepper and red chilies provide spiciness and a rich hue. The accompanied basmati rice was perfect, fluffy and light. Served with chapati & chutney's & sliced red onions with lime. Delicious, authentic Indian cuisine in a casual atmosphere. Our first time here and I'm hooked! Vijay is a gracious host, warm, friendly, and accommodating. There are options from around the sub-continent so whether you're up for a tasty tikka or a tangy dosa, Vijay has you covered! My buddy ordered a samosa. Vijay convinced him to get the samosa chaat, which is a samosa covered in chickpea curry, yogurt, and chutney. He loved it! I can confirm it was delicious. You get the crunch of the samosa, the hearty chew of potato and chickpea, sweet tang from the chutney, and creamy coolness of the yogurt. He then had the palak paneer as a follow up. The spinach tasted fresh, the paneer had nice texture and flavor. It's creamy, earthy, and absolutely worth it! I asked Vijay to choose for me, with the only request for the food to be Indian-way spicy. First came Vada Pav. They are small potato dumpling-esque balls fried in gram flour and served on a dinner roll with a garlic and green chile chutney. They are quite yummy! They're not very large so an order of two is a great appetizer for you and a friend. For the entrée, came chole bhatura. This is a spicy and tangy chickpea curry served with fluffy fried leavened bread. The chickpeas tasted fresh, the curry had solid heat, nice creaminess, and that delightful masala flavor profile I love so much! The bread is soft, flaky, bubbly, warm, and chewy. It's a perfect compliment to the chole. If you're new to Indian food, or if not, I highly recommend eating with your hands rather than utensils. Using your hands prepares the body for the eating experience. The touch informs you of temperature and texture, it tells the mouth to begin salivating, the stomach to prepare for digestion, and it affords deeper connection to the food itself. Let go of any fears or embarrassment of getting your hands dirty and dig in! Tear the bread with your hands, scoop up a hefty portion of chole with it, and devour! You can wash up after! I also had a mango lassi. While the mango is frozen, as it's out of season, it was quite good. It wasn't overly sweet and had an enjoyable level of tang. Vijay confirmed that he uses Amul brand yogurt. The canteen is situated in the old Somerville train station. The interior is quaint with counter seating along the windows. There is a back patio that will be open in warmer weather and shared with a couple other restaurants/cafés, soon to be open. There is a tiny parking lot with a handful of spots, and plenty of street parking on Veterans Memorial Dr. This was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend making this a regular stop! read more

We asked what recommendations he had and maybe he felt attacked bc he started speaking in an unprofessional tone about how we should just go to google bc they are highly rated...we were just asking about his reccs...so idk why he felt the need to come for us. The food took forever to come out - we order 2 chole bature - super over priced and taste wise the chole were so odd. We are Punjabi so we know how it should be- this was sweet and tomato-y. We then kept waiting for the paranthe we ordered, when asked he said we never ordered it and started telling us we are wrong. We literally ordered it so why would you try to blame us for not placing the order. it took 40 mins to come out - we were shocked, it was 1 parantha like why is it taking 40 mins? when we asked, he said he can't say anything to his cook, but he's the owner so I'm confused? when it came out it was raw lol we were shocked again, asked if they can roast it a bit and that took another 20 mins - why is it taking 20 mins to roast it on each side??? by then our hunger had died, and we had to just cancel the order. who waits 1 hr for one parantha? shocked. the the owner was also so rude to us for no reason, something was stuck up his ass for sure. DO NOT RECOMMEND. esp if you are Punjabi and want decent food - it's not worth the attitude and time we wasted. we spent 2 hrs at this place overall for 3 dishes.
