It's been a few years since I got my last baseline scan, and I was curious to see my body comp changes from calisthenics workouts. I like the online scheduling system which allows easy access to mobile locations and available time slots. I showed up to the spot and was warmly greeted by Randolph. He quickly got me set up on the scan table, and about 10 minutes later, the scan was complete. Randolph was super thorough in answering questions and explaining the process. The online dashboard is awesome and contains all the data from past scans. Also, I learned I can use my FSA towards the scans. Beware this company is disreputable. I signed up & paid for a package of two scans only to discover this company was charging my credit card monthly. That was easily sorted via my credit card. My first scan was fine and info was helpful but the follow up online explanatory session was a laughable waste of time with a young woman reading (badly) a script. None of the info was helpful or interesting and very badly presented. No one on the presentation even asked a question, everyone seemed like me, just couldn't wait to get off. My 2nd scan I needed to reschedule, which is now impossible to do online. My email confirmation instructs to contact them via email or call if you need to reschedule. I sent three emails and received no reply so called. Ofc automated answering so left a message with my deets & new date/time request. Inefficient and annoying. The woman who called back said she had no record of my emails requesting appt change. It was much easier to reschedule the first time I had a scan as I could do it online. Although the info gleaned from the scan is helpful, will never use this company again. Unscrupulous and very annoying to deal with. read more

Poor customer service and unreliable. I've had back to back appointments cancelled with notice the day before. If you live anywhere in the mid to South Bay Area, it will take AT LEAST 2 weeks to get scheduled for a new appointment. Work extra hard the week before a scan just to get cancelled on. I planned on getting scanned every 3 months. Last scan was in July and now it has been 5 months because of this. Oh and if you sign up for a quarterly scan credit, you will wait 3 months before you can schedule another appointment and like I said before, it takes at least 2-4 weeks to schedule so it's more like 4 months for every scan. It's cheaper to sign up for the subscription -- you can cancel at any time. After the scan, they'll email you a full report in about an hour. They do a remote consultation to go over the results due to covid -- they did it right after the scan before. read more

The scan went really smoothly and quickly. The whole process took about 5 minutes. I filled out the medical form online far in advance before arriving. If you don't fill it out ahead of time, they have ipads for you to complete the process. The scanner is inside a big truck. It looks like the machine pictured below. The tech, Ari, had me lie down on the blue mat below the arm and close my eyes while the scanner slowly moved over my body. It's basically a giant low radiation x ray. The only thing you have to worry about is no metal because it skews your bone density reading, so I had to take out all my piercings, no big deal. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in their muscle distribution/symmetry and body fat composition. It yields a lot of data, and you don't need to be dunked in a tank of water. Jason (I believe he's the founder) was there to explain the results. He assured me I was doing really well, particularly for my age. I would highly recommend the scan! read more

Took my exam at Google TC1 Campus. The results were terribly inaccurate and the scanner definitely seemed to not have been calibrated properly that day. Everyone I have talked to that got scanned that day is confused by the outcome. My nutritionist (who recommended the service) thinks those results can't be right. When I raised the issue with the girl that took my scan, she pretty much laughed at me... Last Saturday, I went to Brick House Fitness center in San Jose where Body-Spec parked its mobile RV that houses a General Electric dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) scanner. The founder, Jason Belvill, was there to greet those that had signed-up on Body-Spec's website for their 15-minute appointment. I was interested in getting a scan because I heard that it was extremely accurate and it showed -- unlike other body fat measuring techniques -- a breakdown of subcutaneous fat versus visceral fat. I had recently lost 30 pounds and was eager to see the fruits of my labor. Jason and I both wished that I had gotten a DXA scan in my Dad-Bod state, so we could compare results. I lay down on the DXA scanner and Ari the DXA technician performed the 6-minute scan. Now I know what it's like to be a piece of paper on a Xerox machine! I was a little concerned that the scanner results would be skewed since the whole RV shook when the scanner head would change positions, but it was not the case. Following the scan, I waited outside while the results were interpreted and printed out for me. Customers also get access to an online version after a few days. The results were just a tad higher than the readings from my Fitbit Aria scale, but they were still around what I had expected. The more interesting results was the body composition readings for lean muscle, fat, and bone density around the different parts of my body (arms, legs, trunk, Android and Gynoid regions). Jason explained to me all the results and answered all of my questions to my satisfaction. Body-Spec recommends getting tests every quarter to track one's body composition over time. At the end of the printout are graphs plotting your results over time. First-time customers can get scanned for $40 and subsequent scans are $55 unless you buy a package of scans. As a point of comparison, a Fitbit Aria costs about $130. I recommend Body-Spec because the technology gives you information that other techniques don't. Even if you only do it once, you can get actionable information that will help you with your fitness goals. Suggestions for improvement: 1) When I reserved my spot a few weeks out, I filled out the online intake form. A day or two before the appointment, I received an email asking me to fill out the intake form again. The system should have detected that I had filled out the intake form for that appointment and not asked me again. I did fill it out a second time, since I wasn't sure if the information was captured the first time. Customers who forget to fill out the form can also fill it out on-site. 2) I've seen photos from other DXA scans (not from Body-Spec) which have higher-resolution x-ray images. It would be great to have access to those images, as the one provided is not as detailed as it could be. read more

This is an update to the review I posted earlier. Earlier I wasn't happy with the service due to the fact that there was no onsite rep to discuss my results. I was given an opportunity to talk to a rep on the phone to go over my results. But even before I could set it up Jason, who is also the owner called me to set up a phone call consultation. Unfortunately I wasn't able to pick up the phone so he sent me and email and we setup a phone call to go over my results. Over the call he went over my results thoroughly. At no point did I feel rushed. He gave me insights to my results and went over each and every body part in details. He checked with me about my goals and also provided me with a few tips on how to reach my goal and set the right expectations. If you're serious about your exercise goals, I can't recommend BodySpec enough. I've tried all the various body fat measurement techniques: calipers, bioelectrical impedance, hydrostatic, you name it. Nothing even comes close to the amount of detail that a DeXA scan provides. Not only will you get your body fat percentage, but they'll even go into detail about how much fat and lean mass is in your body part regions. For example, my scan showed that I had more muscle in my right leg compared to my left (which is correct... I'm right leg dominant). I can then use this information to train my left leg more. Using this information, I have a great baseline to compare to once I bulk over the next three months. Now I can actually see how much muscle I built in my arms, versus before where I was guessing based on a tape measurer. Regarding BodySpec itself, I couldn't be more pleased. The operators were nice and talked to me about my fitness regime and goals, and made recommendations after the scan (e.g., training the left leg). The entire process took less than 15 minutes. I can't wait to go to the gym today and show my results to my coach, and all the other athletes who train with me. I'm recommending this to everyone! I already have my next scan scheduled! read more

I have now had 2 Body Spec Scans done. I will never have a pinch test or scale fat measurement done again. The Body Spec scan is so much more individualized and comprehensive than any other test I've ever seen. The Body Spec scan tells you not only your fat percentage, but also where that fat is on your body, how much lean muscle you have & how much your actual skeleton weighs. Jason is who has done both my after scan consults, he is wonderful. He tells it like it is & doesn't sugar coat anything, but in the most encouraging and up building way. He helps you get a better understanding of what you are doing right & what You can improve on. For all you people out there who think you're just "big-boned", you're effin wrong! And BodySpec proves it! Hell YESSSSSS!!!!! I don't care if you are an Olympic athlete or a couch sloth, everyone can benefit from this service! I worked at a gym for 3 years and would regularly use the hand-held machine to check my body fat. I was skeptical of the reading so started to research options and assumed I would end up in one of those get-nekked-dunk-in-a-pool-of-water situations. Which I was willing to do, but really didn't want to. I came across BodySpec and it seemed like a good alternative. Well boy was I impressed! I was able to easily pay and book online on a Friday for a Monday morning appointment. I went to the mobile truck when it was in West Hollywood. First off, I was almost an hour late - YIKES! There was a fatal car accident on the major street the mobile was located on and traffic everywhere was nightmare. I did call and email prior, and they let me know they would do their best to still get me in, which they did. Now, I don't recommend you show up late, but I am so grateful they were able to get me in - THANK YOU!!!! I was able to be seen right away and the process took less than 10 minutes. Best off, no stripping down in a bathing suit or getting wet! I got a detailed report and they reviewed it with me after as well as I was able to access a PDF version online to share with my trainer/coach. Not only was able to find out where my body carries fat (duh lol), but was also able to to find out my lean muscle mass and bone mass. And to my surprise and excitement, my body fat was a good 6 points LOWER than that darn hand-held machine at the gym! Damn that. The cost was very reasonable for what I was finding for similar analysis, but I feel the details of the measurements were much more valuable. I will certainly be doing this regularly to help track my progress to drop body fat, not just pounds. Like I said, this is info I think is useful to anyone. Had my first body scan since college, where I did the BodPod (a little claustrophobic) this was great. I arrived and Camille helped me get situated on the bed/table, positioned just right for the scan. Had to hold still for about 6 minutes- not a problem, but 20 seconds in, my forehead began to itch!! Fortunately, Camille alerted me the moment my hands could move and I was able to scratch it!(isn't that always the way!!) The results were very enlightening. I learned about my RMR and how to target calories for muscle sparing weight loss, my bone density, how much fat I could really stand to lose, as well as how my muscle symmetry is coming along with my free weights activities. I'm continuing on in my fitness journey and will check in when I meet my next goal. My only regret is not doing this at the start of my journey. Bummer. Oh well- not gonna go back! This was my first time doing any kind of body composition measurement, so I have no reference point in terms of measurement accuracy. But my calculated body weight was within +/- 0.5 lbs of what I measure on a scale, so that's definitely a good sign! They give you a summary of your total body fat percentage, lean tissue mass, and bone mineral content, as well as a breakdown of how these totals are distributed throughout different regions of your body. They also give you your calculated resting metabolic rate (they have a separate service that provides measured RMR data), bone density, muscle balance, and fat content.
